WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY! The State Theatre opened in 1921 as a grand movie palace. The theater began with silent films and quickly transitioned to “talkies” or movies with sound. We recently came across an article in The Daily Home News from March 3, 1929 when we were known as “B.F. Keith’s State Theatre.” The article talks about the introduction of sound into movie productions, and it is clear that folks were not quite sold on “talkies” and the future of movies (see headline/sketch above). Nevertheless, the announcement was made that “The State Theatre will be ready to run ‘talkies’ beginning on Monday, March 11.” The first talkie screened on that day was Synthetic Sin starring Colleen Moore. After that, the talkies continued for many years as the State Theatre continued to change hands. In July of 1942 when we were “RKO State Theatre,” there were screenings of This Above All starring Joan Fontaine and Tyrone Power, two of the great romantic stars of the mid-20th century. Two years earlier, in 1940, Fontaine’s sister starred in one of the biggest movies of all time, Gone with the Wind. Using the stage name Fontaine, Joan was born Joan Beauvoir de Havilland, sister of Olivia de Havilland. According to The Daily Home News on March 6, 1940, GWTW was in such demand that it was the first time since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, that the State Theatre opened its doors before noon for a movie screening. As we enter the latter part of the winter months, our minds turn to the promise of spring. I always think of the spring as a time of discovery. And what better place for discovery than our beautiful theater. I hope that, while you are enjoying the concert, or dance, or comedy performance that brought you here today, you will take a moment to discover the other powerful and moving performances that fill these pages and this auditorium with magic, energy, and wonder. Here are some of the recent additions to our 2020 lineup that you may have missed. • Dead Can Dance (4/22) — Neoclassical art rock duo Dead Can Dance make their State Theatre debut and only New Jersey appearance! Featuring Brendan Perry, Lisa Gerrard, and a full backing band, Dead Can Dance’s tour features music from their spectacular three decade spanning set that includes their much loved classic works from their extensive catalog such as “The Host Of Seraphim,” “The Carnival Is Over,” and “Yulunga.” • The Righteous Brothers (6/14) — With a string of #1 classics, including the most played song in radio history, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Righteous Brothers duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield topped the charts for over four decades. After Bobby’s death in 2003, Medley asked Bucky Heard to join the group. This special concert experience features their biggest hits—“Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Unchained Melody,” Medley’s Grammy®-winning Dirty Dancing theme “The Time of My Life,” and more.

ABOUT GET THE LED OUT From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album…GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants…a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity. Dubbed by the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” GTLO offers a strong focus on the early years. They also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever heard in concert. GTLO also include a special “acoustic set” with Zep favorites such as “Tangerine” and the “Battle of Evermore” being performed in its original instrumentation with guest singer Diana DeSantis joining the band. GTLO has amassed a strong national touring history, having performed at major club and PAC venues across the country. GTLO’s approach to their performance of this hallowed catalog is not unlike a classical performance. “Led Zeppelin are sort of the classical composers of the rock era,” says lead vocalist Paul Sinclair. “I believe 100 years from now they will be looked at as the Bach or Beethoven of our time. As cliché as it sounds, their music is timeless.” A GTLO concert mimics the “light and shade” that are the embodiment of “The Mighty Zep.” Whether it’s the passion and fury with which they deliver the bluessoaked, groove-driven rock anthems, it’s their attention to detail and nuance that makes a GTLO performance a truly awe-inspiring event!

PAUL SINCLAIR, lead vocals/harmonica For lead vocalist Paul Sinclair, singing is quite simply in his blood. In the fall of 2003, Sinclair was contacted by a couple of local Philadelphia area musicians who were putting together a Led Zeppelin tribute band and in need of a singer. Sinclair had no interest in doing the “impersonator thing” but agreed to help the guys with one show. He immediately enlisted the help of Paul Hammond to add the musical chops and stability required to pull it off. The idea of performing “The Mighty Zep’s” catalog in concert just as it’s heard on record was suggested by Sinclair, but not well received. However, with time and some lineup changes, Sinclair’s vision soon became reality and Get The Led Out was born. In late 2015 Sinclair was fortunate enough to be asked to lend his Plant-esque vocals to the new Martin Scorsese/Mick Jagger produced HBO TV series Vinyl. In GTLO, Sinclair has found what he describes as a “dream career.” Keeping this important music alive for future generations is a passion-filled calling for him. Most importantly, he is a huge Led Zeppelin fan who strives to “do justice” to what he considers to be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. PAUL HAMMOND, guitarist/mandolin Paul Hammond’s history in the music business is rather extensive. A professional guitarist, producer, engineer, and songwriter, he is also an accomplished electronics technician. Hammond’s life resembles that of some of the greatest technician/musicians of all time, such as Les Paul, Jimmy Page, and Brian May. From writing a song to performing it, engineering the recording session while producing it, building custom amplifiers and effects pedals to play through on it, as well as rebuilding and maintaining the mixing consoles and tape machines used to record it....Paul Hammond does it all. JIMMY MARCHIANO, guitarist/vocals Jimmy Marchiano was born in South Philly. He started playing guitar at an early age, and by his early teens was already playing the local club circuit. In 1985, he

moved to Los Angeles to start the band ANGORA with singer/songwriter John Corabi (Motley Crue/The Scream). The band quickly gained the interest of labels and producers and was managed by Gene Simmons (KISS). In 1999 Marchiano started working with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin/Aerosmith) and John Kalodner on the Zen Dakota album for Columbia/Ruffhouse Records. PHIL D’AGOSTINO, bassist/vocals Phil D’Agostino is well known in the Philadelphia area and beyond as an in-demand touring bassist, session musician, and music educator. In addition to his sideman work, D’Agostino has released two records of original compositions. Inlets in 2013 and Music from a Sinking Ship in 2009. As a session musician, he has done major label work for Grammy®-winning producers in magnificent studios, played bass on bedroom and basement recordings with indie and folk artists, and everything in between. With GTLO, D’Agostino is dedicated to the unending pursuit of emulating the amazing John Paul Jones bass parts. He strives to accurately reproduce all aspects of JPJ’s tone, feel, and harmonic sensibility. ADAM FERRAIOLI, drums/percussion “It all started when I heard my first Led Zeppelin record, THAT’S how I wanted to play the drums! John Bohnam’s thunderous, bombastic beat just drove the band!” That driving force behind Led Zeppelin is what Adam Ferraioli still tries to duplicate to this day.
Ferraioli also played with guitarist Jimmy Marchiano off and on for 10 years. “Once Jimmy and [guitarist] Paul Hammond played together for the first time, they knew there was something special there! We all knew,” recalls Ferraioli. “Once we were all in rehearsal together it just felt like a family! The tones, the feel, everything just felt right.” EDDIE KUREK, keyboadist/guitarist/vocals/percussion Eddie Kurek is a multi-instrumentalist born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. As a teenager, Kurek immersed himself in music with the help of The Paul Green School of Rock. He very quickly became proficient on drums, guitar, keyboards, and vocals. This enabled him to begin writing, recording, and performing his own songs. Now in GTLO, Kurek brings his passion for rock and mad multi-skills to the party! When he’s not on the road with GTLO, he continues to write songs and perform with his band IV Stone. DIANA DESANTIS, singer Lending years of experience as a singer in many bands performing on the Philadelphia club circuit, DeSantis’ talented voice brings to life the multiple harmonies and call and answer vocal (originally recorded by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention) on this classic acoustic track from Led Zeppelin’s fourth album vocalist.

ABOUT A CAPPELLA LIVE! The past few years have been a Renaissance for a cappella–with a perfect storm of movies, television, YouTube, and radio– breathing new life and excitement into the world’s first musical form. And as great as it is to see and hear a cappella performances on screens large and small, the best way to experience vocal harmony is in person. And so A Cappella Live was born. Built on the classic Motown review tour model, A Cappella Live is bringing four of the nation’s greatest a cappella acts to performing arts centers around America: The charming boyband sound and moves of The Filharmonic The rich harmonies of Gospel/R&B legends Committed Chart-topping lead vocals and live-looping beatbox by Blake Lewis Internationally-inspired songstresses Women of the World COMMITTED is an a cappella group composed of six male vocalists from Huntsville, AL. All are graduates of Oakwood University. The group won the second season of the musical competition The Sing-Off on NBC, performing a jaw-dropping arrangement of “We Are the Champions” from Queen. In 2011, Committed released their self-titled album, Committed, on Epic Records. Their 2015 Christmas album, Home for Christmas, earned the group a Grammy® nomination for the rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear.” Committed are Randell Hall, Brent Hoyte, Theron “Therry” Thomas II, Maurice Staple, and Geston Pierre. THE FILHARMONIC, a Los Angeles-based a cappella group of Filipino-American youngsters has much to sing about. After being featured in NBC’S hit musical competition The Sing-Off, the five piece vocal group made the semi-finals and joined The Sing-Off national tour. They were featured in the Universal Pictures hit movie, Pitch Perfect 2, and became a viral sensation after their Late Late Show appearances. In 2016, The Filharmonic 24
brought their unique blend of hip hop, pop, and 90s nostalgia to more than 150 stages nationwide and were named the #1 college booked entertainment group of the year. Most recently they have opened for acts such as Fifth Harmony, Pentatonix, Future, and Filipino super sensation Gary V. They consist of vocalists VJ Rosales, Joe Caigoy, Trace Gaynor, vocal bass Jules Cruz, and beat-boxer Niko Del Rey. BLAKE LEWIS first came to national attention as one of the most unique contestants ever to compete on American Idol, and long before that, as a teenager, he was well-known as “Bshorty” in Seattle’s a cappella, hip-hop, and rave scenes. But with the release of his ambitious and completely independent third album, Portrait of a Chameleon, Lewis is taking things to a whole new level. WOMEN OF THE WORLD is an award-winning international a cappella quartet that performs original and traditional folk music in 32 languages with a contemporary twist. The four singers represent Japan, Italy, India, and the U.S. (by way of Haiti). Despite differences in upbringing, language, religion, ethnicity, food, and music, they are bound by one unique desire: to explore sounds, rhythms, and musical vocabulary from all over the world. Since 2008, Women of the World has journeyed through the music of Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe, presenting audiences an exhilarating experience through chants, storytelling, dance, percussion, and improvisation. Mentored by Grammy® Award-winning maestro Bobby McFerrin, Women of the World have also collaborated with powerhouse American songstress Nona Hendryx, African vocal icon Angelique Kidjo, Greek classical artist Mario Frangoulis, and the Boston Pops Orchestra led by maestro conductor Keith Lockhart. Women of the World is Ayumi Ueda, Annette Philip, Débo Ray, and Giorgia Renosto. DEKE SHARON (Vocal Arrangements) is creative artistic director of A Cappella Live! Heralded as “The Father of Contemporary A Cappella,” (Entertainment Weekly), Sharon is responsible for the current sound of modern a cappella, having created the

dense vocal-instrumental sound in college, subsequently spreading it around the world. Sharon produced NBC’s The SingOff worldwide (U.S., Netherlands, China, South Africa) and served as arranger, onsite music director, and vocal producer for Universal’s Pitch Perfect 1, 2, and 3 starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Sharon founded the Contemporary A Cappella Society while in college and is responsible for many seminal a cappella programs. He is also contemporary cappella’s most prolific arranger, having arranged over 2,000 songs, with a thousand of them in print worldwide with Hal Leonard/Contemporary A Cappella Publishing. He has written five books A Cappella Arranging (2012), A Cappella (2015), The Heart of Vocal Harmony (2016), A Cappella Warmups for Pop and Jazz Choir (2017), and So You Want To Sing A Cappella (2017). As the founder, director, and arranger for the House Jacks for 24 years, the original “Rock Band Without Instruments,” Sharon shared the stage with countless music legends, including Ray Charles; James Brown; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Run DMC; The Temptations; LL Cool J; and the Four Tops, and performed for luminaries including President Bill Clinton. He has produced dozens of award-winning a cappella albums (including Straight No Chaser, Committed, Nota, Street Corner Symphony, the Tufts Beelzebubs, Pitch Perfect, and In Transit), created a cappella groups for Disneyland and Disneyworld, and frequently tours the world teaching students and professional singers. His voice can be heard in commercials and video games, including “Just Dance Kids 2.” He is one of only 20 honorary members of the Barbershop Harmony Society since 1938, as well as an honorary member of BYU Vocal Point, received CASA’s lifetime achievement award in 2016, and the Tufts Barnum award for excellence in education in 2017. You can see him on television on Lifetime’s Pitch Slapped and BBC One’s: Pitch Battle. His latest project is Disney’s DCappella.
PROGRAM NOTE The highest praise one can give an instrumentalist is to say that they make their instrument “sing” …which nowadays seems unnecessary as today’s top a cappella groups are singing every instrumental part from the rhythm section (bass and drums) through guitars, trumpets, and even synthesizers. A cappella is the oldest music in the world, and yet with modern techniques it’s also the freshest sound, with today’s groups welcoming a new legion of fans into the incredible world of vocal harmony. Tonight’s acts are four of the very best in today’s a cappella scene, each representing a different style and sensibility. Each are successful performers on their own, but when presented together in this inaugural year of A Cappella Live, they make a statement about the incredible power and diversity possible within vocal harmony. Tonight, you’ll hear rock, pop, jazz, folk, r&b, gospel, techno, and so many other styles, yet every sound is human. Diversity is at the center of it all: a diversity of vocal sounds, of styles, of backgrounds, and traditions. Yet when it’s all brought together, presented side to side, it’s an almost overwhelming display of the power of human expression. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy tonight’s show. He was a Top 8 finalist in MasterChef Junior Season 7 when he was eight-years-old and in the second grade. Besides cooking, Smith enjoys swimming, dance, piano, gymnastics, and singing. He is Vice President of his school’s student council and his motto is ‘dream it, do it.’ Smith was part of the MasterChef Jr. Live! debut in the Fall of 2019, was a guest on MasterChef Jr. Camp and was recently on the Rachael
Ray Show where he prepared one of his favorite side dishes, warm tomato salsa with rainbow chard stems. When Smith is older, he hopes to own a farm to table restaurant to influence people to eat local, fresh, and healthy food. AVERY MEADOWS, Season Six Avery Meadows is your typical 12-yearold Texas girl, with a twist. At only eight, she was the finalist on Season 6 of MasterChef Junior...if you ask her, the highlight of her life, so far. She made lifelong friendships, memories, and experiences that most kids can only dream of. Even after the show she has continued her love of cooking and baking and enjoys learning the Texas art of grilling with her “Poppie” on the weekends. She has become quite the French macron enthusiast and has mastered the art of the difficult pastry. When she is not in the kitchen, you can find her on the volleyball courts with her team, or helping her dad build and fix things around the house. She loves the outdoors and all the activities that go with it in Texas. This year she will be inducted into the local chapter of the National Charity League where she looks forward to serving her community and local schools in need.

ABOUT THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL BALLET The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Perm. The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian 42
National Ballet is its own institution, with over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. In addition to their extensive tour history, beginning in January 2017 the company will embark upon a four-month coast-to-coast tour of the United States. In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet, and she has focused the Company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works of Petipa: Don Quixote, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Raymonda, Paquita, Coppelia and La Sylphide, as well as productions of, among others, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, and La Fille Mal Gardee.

Queen in varying centuries, it is really a storybook kingdom set in the realm of the imagination. In the Prologue, the hall of the palace where the christening is about to take place is resplendent with color and imposing with its high ceilings and great stone archways. The master of ceremonies, pages, heralds, ladies in waiting, and finally the King and Queen all promenade into the royal setting, looking most distinguished in their elaborate dress. Next, the fairies of the kingdom join the scene of courtly pageantry with the Lilac Fairy, six cavaliers and maids of honor entering last. All dance in honor of the King and Queen and baby Aurora, about to be christened. Each of the fairies dances her own solo, presenting a gift to the Princess. Just as the Lilac Fairy finishes her dance a strange and frightening rumble is heard. Its meaning soon becomes clear: the master of ceremonies has forgotten to invite the evil Fairy Carabosse! The grotesque woman, her face a white mask, her long dress black and tattered, enters in a huge black coach drawn by four
The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, is often considered the finest achievement of the classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault’s well-known fairy tale. A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet that was Petipa’s pride. ugly rats. Stepping down, she gesticulates with her hand and threatens with her stick that they will have to pay the price for their omission. In mime, she delivers the ominous curse that the Princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The master of ceremonies is in disgrace, the King and Queen are in despair. But the Lilac Fairy has not given her the gift. She steps forward and assures the royal court that on her 16th Birthday the princess will indeed prick her finger, but then fall asleep for 100 years. Carabosse speeds off in a rage while the others surround the infant’s cradle as if to protect her from further harm. The Sleeping Beauty was the first of Petipa’s classics to be seen in Western Europe. Under the title The Sleeping Princess, it was presented by Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929) in London in 1921. In 1939, it was remounted in Great Britain and has been considered the foundation of the Classical ballet repertory in that country ever since. It has now been adopted worldwide, and performance of the leading role remains a kind of initiation rite for aspiring ballerinas.

The Sleeping Beauty is a supreme demonstration of the challenge of Petipa’s style— steel point work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions, brilliant battery (beats in the air), daring lifts and, in addition, it gives a fairy tale plot lavish stage treatment. However, its production actually checked a growing tendency toward shapeless extravaganza in 19th century ballet, adhering closely to the principle of choreographic symphonism— like the composition of a symphony, it had a certain formal structure. The Sleeping Beauty was choreographed in strict association with Tchaikovsky’s music. There are themes developed and resumed throughout the ballet, and each act is a unity unto itself. Tchaikovsky willingly took instruction from Petipa as to the length tempo and character of each musical sequence (as he would also do in The Nutcracker). The themes—a young girl’s coming of age and the triumph of good over evil are developed dramatically and musically during the course of the ballet. Each of the three acts includes an
Adagio for Princess Aurora, the first celebrating her girlhood, the second her falling in love, and the third her marriage. In these pas d’actions, Petipa makes fuller use than previous choreographers of the dramatic potential of the classical ballet, as when Aurora’s curved (questioning) attitudes become sharp (exclamatory) arabesques and her balances grow steadily surer. PROLOGUE King Florestan the XIVth declares a grand christening ceremony to be held in honor of the birth of his daughter, Princess Aurora named after the dawn. An entourage of six fairies are invited to the Christening to be godmothers to the child. They are the Candide Fairy, the Coulante Fairy, the Miettes Fairy, the Canari Fairy, the Violente Fairy and—most importantly—the Lilac Fairy, who is the last to arrive. As the fairies are happily granting gifts of honesty, grace, prosperity, song, and generosity, they are suddenly interrupted by the arrival of the wicked fairy Carabosse, who is furious at the King’s failure to invite her to the ceremony. The King and Queen begin to remonstrate, and the Master of Ceremonies, Catallabutte, intervenes to take responsibility, whereupon Carabosse rips off his wig, laughing. With spite and rage, Carabosse declares her curse on Princess Aurora: she will prick her finger on her 16th birthday and die. But all is not lost: the Lilac Fairy, fortunately, has not yet granted her gift to the Princess. She acknowledges that Carabosse’s power is immense and she cannot completely reverse the curse. However, she declares, though the Princess shall indeed prick her finger, she will not die, but instead sleep for 100 years until she is awakened by the kiss of a prince. Carabosse departs, and the curtain falls as the good fairies surround the cradle. ACT I The Spell Act I opens at Aurora’s 16th birthday party. Brightly clad peasant girls dance a divertissement with flower garlands. Holding the arched garlands overhead, they dance in multiple circles, weaving in and out to a waltz tempo. All await the arriv-

al of the Princess Aurora. The ballerina princess bursts onto the scene, dancing a brief and vivacious solo in the manner of a carefree young girl. She is then ceremoniously introduced to the four princes who have come to seek her hand. The Rose Adagio, the famous pas d’action expressing a young girl’s blossoming into womanhood, is about to start. Aurora begins the adagio in with one leg raised and bent behind her, one curved arm raised overhead. Some have read in this “attitude” pose, which Aurora repeats often, a kind of gentle questioning or youthful uncertainty. One after the other, each of the suitors turns and displays her while she maintains her pose. She releases the hand of the suitor supporting her, and raising both of her arms overhead, balances momentarily, as if tentatively testing her abilities. She then takes the arm of the next prince and begins the sequence again. After a brief interlude in which the princess dances alone, she returns to accept a rose from each of the suitors (hence the title, Rose Adagio). She pirouettes slow-

ly and accepts each rose; one prince supports her while the next offers his flower. At the end of the Adagio, she returns to her attitude position, and supported in turn by each prince, she releases her hand and balances for an extended time. Finally, as she frees her hand from the clasp of the fourth prince, her curved attitude straightens into a sharp, arabesque extension. She retains her balance poised confidently on one toe, as if she has visibly come of age before the eyes of the adoring suitors. The Princess continues dancing a joyful solo until her attention is suddenly distracted by a strange woman dressed in black who offers her an unfamiliar object. Before anyone can stop her, Aurora seizes the dreaded spindle. The unwary Princess pricks her finger, grows weaker, and falls to the floor in a swoon. Just as those assembled lapse into despair, the Lilac Fairy steps forward. Waving her wand soothingly, she reminds them that the Princess will only sleep, and she casts everyone into deep slumber along with her. The Lilac Fairy summons a forest

of thorns, thickets, and enormous shrubbery to grow around the sleeping court. —Intermission— ACT II Scene One: The Vision Act II takes us to a neighboring kingdom 100 years later. Prince Charming and his lord and lady friends are out for a hunt. The cheerful retinue amuse themselves with dances and games, but the Prince is tired of everyday diversions and stays behind to wander about alone. Suddenly the Lilac Fairy floats in on a boat with gossamer sails. She offers to show the melancholy Prince a vision of Aurora. The Prince is utterly enchanted by the sight of the Princess dancing lyrically and romantically amidst a tableau of fairies and nymphs, bathed in a bluish light. He pursues her but can only hold the Princess in his arms for a moment before she eludes him and disappears. She is after all only a spectral image conjured up by the Lilac Fairy. The Fairy offers to take the Prince across the lake, through the dense and tangled forest, to the castle where the real Princess lies asleep. ACT II Scene Two: The Awakening The Prince approaches the canopied bed set on a high platform and, as the music heightens, he plants the awakening kiss. Aurora greets him. The King and Quenn appear from either side of the stage and welcome the awakened Aurora and her Prince with joy. ACT III The Wedding The final act ushers us into a sumptuous hall, graced with statuesque columns

and a circular gold staircase crowned by a blue sky. It is here that the Royal wedding of Prince Charming and Princess Aurora will take place. A full series of celebratory divertissements is performed by the inhabitants of fairyland. Puss-in-Boots, Bluebeard and his wife, Goldilocks and a Bear, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf all dance. A highlight is the pas de deux of the soaring Blue Bird and his Princess. First dancing together and then separately, they compete with each other spinning and fluttering in sparkling flight, sometimes jumping so high they seem virtually suspended in the air. The man’s variation in particular, which features many beating jumps while he arches his body backwards and forward (brises voles) is one of the most famous and demanding in the international repertory. The Bluebird’s dance ends with the female lifted on the male’s shoulder. The celebration then climaxes with the Grand Pas de Deux danced by the Prince and Princess. They are regal, formal and confident dancing together. Prince Charming supports his bride’s pirouettes and displays her long extensions and secure balances. The Prince jumps and spins during his solo and the Princess spins on pointe with even surer mastery than she showed in the Rose Adagio. Finally, Aurora whirls into the Prince’s arms and dives toward the floor; the Prince catches her around the waist and supports her in the famous inverted pose known as the fish dive. All join the bride and groom for a spirited mazurka and the Lilac Fairy, standing in their midst, bestows her blessing on the happy couple.

On weekends, State Theatre Guest Services is open at least 3 hours prior to any performance we ticket. For all performances we ticket, Guest Services is open at least one half hour past curtain and open through first intermission, when applicable. ORDER ONLINE 24/7: STNJ.org FIRE NOTICE: The red exit sign nearest to your seat indicates the shortest routes to the street. In the event of fire or other emergency, please do not run—walk to the nearest exit. LOST AND FOUND: If you discover that you have lost something during the performance, please contact the Director of Event Services in the lobby or call the theater at 732-246-7469. CELL PHONES/CAMERAS: Please note that ipads, go pros, selfie sticks, tripods, monopods, cameras with detachable lens and recording devices are not permitted in the theater at any time. Guests who do not adhere are subject to ejection without a refund.
THEATER POLICIES: Guests who arrive after a performance has begun will be seated at the discretion of the Theater Manager during an appropriate break in the performance. Please note this may not be until intermission, so guests should always plan to arrive early. Guests who must leave the theater during a performance are encouraged to do so during a break in the performance, and are subject to being held in the lobby until another suitable performance break. Please be sure to have your ticket on you at all times. If you do not have a ticket to show you will be asked to leave. Food and drink are allowed in the theater for most performances, check with an usher before entering the theater. Outside food and drinks are strictly prohibited from entering the theater. Smoking and vaping is strictly prohibited in all areas of the theater. State Theatre New Jersey has a zero tolerance policy regarding aggressive or abusive behavior at any time at State Theatre. Guests who engage in fighting, throwing objects, using foul/abusive language or gestures, attempting to enter restricted areas or engaging in other behavior detrimental to the experience of other guests will be immediately ejected from the venue. STATE THEATRE ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES Only the orchestra level is wheelchair accessible. Patrons can make arrangements for accessible seating through the Ticket Office when purchasing tickets. Listening (infrared) devices are available at coat check. Guests will be asked to leave a driver’s license as a deposit.

SIGHTINGS AT STNJ A ROYAL OCCASION! On January 11, students from the New Brunswick School District who are part of State Theatre’s Symphony Scholars program had a chance to meet with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s conductor Mark Wigglesworth after the orchestra’s concert performance with piano soloist Khatia Buniatishvili. Symphony Scholars is an exciting and growing partnership between State Theatre and the New Brunswick Public School District that gives students in the district’s award-winning instrumental music program special access to the theater’s classical music series. SOLD-OUT SCHOOL SHOW In January we were proud to present a sold-out school performance of Turning 15 On The Road to Freedom, which was attended by special guest Lynda Blackmon Lowry for a Q&A with students! Adapted from her award-winning memoir, Turning 15 tells the true story of Lynda Blackmon, the youngest participant in the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
