Welcome in Αthens Dear friends,
It’s that time of the year again when mother nature seems to be rubbing the sleep out of her eyes and all five senses come alive. This is a very special time in Greece. The rains subside; the fields display a tapestry of colors from the countless varieties of wildflowers that begin to bloom. Intoxicating ribbons of delicate perfume drift past you from blossoming orange trees and jasmine bushes. The celebration of life begins again in all its glory. The goddess οf ancient Greece, Demeter is reunited with her daughter Persephone and to show her joy she decorates the world with vibrant color. The Orthodox Christians around the globe are preparing to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, the most significant and lavish of all Greek religious celebrations. Easter is a time for the celebration of life, rebirth and renewal. It is awe inspiring and a truly magical time to be in Greece. This year we celebrate Easter on 5th May. It has been a long winter and Greece has certainly seen her share of hardship these past three years. But strolling through the streets of Athens you can sense a composed air of optimism which is the general theme of the spring 2013 issue of the Athens Guide. On the following pages you will find a wealth of helpful information; suggestions on where to go, what to do, where to eat and what to buy. Ήρθε πάλι η άνοιξη και η φύση ξυπνάει από το βαθύ χειμωνιάτικο της ύπνο. Αυτή είναι μια πολύ ιδιαίτερη στιγμή στην Ελλάδα. Οι βροχές υποχώρησαν και η γη μοιάζει με ένα ζωηρά χρωματισμένο μωσαϊκό από τα ατελείωτα ανθισμένα αγριολούλουδα. Λεπτές κορδέλες αρωμάτων μάς χαϊδεύουν καθώς περνάμε από τις πορτοκαλιές και τα γιασεμιά στους δρόμους. Η γιορτή της ζωής αρχίζει και πάλι. Η Δήμητρα επανενώθηκε με την κόρη της, Περσεφόνη και από τη χαρά της στολίζει τον κόσμο μας. Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί σε όλο τον κόσμο ετοιμάζονται να γιορτάσουν την Ανάσταση του Χριστού, την πιο σημαντική γιορτή της Χριστιανοσύνης. Το Πάσχα, η γιορτή της αναγέννησης και της ανανέωσης, είναι μια πραγματικά μαγική στιγμή για να είσαι στην Ελλάδα. Περάσαμε ένα μακρύ και δύσκολο χειμώνα, ίσως τον πιο δύσκολο των τελευταίων ετών. Αλλά εάν κάνετε μια βόλτα στους δρόμους της Αθήνας, θα νιώσετε έναν συγκρατημένο αέρα αισιοδοξίας να αιωρείται διακριτικά, αλλά αισθητά. Single ticket for a single use costs: 1,20 € / reduced (students) 0,60 €. Valid only for one journey with one of the following public transport

Tickets are sold at automatic vending machines, available at all stations (Metro, Suburban railway & Tram), as well as Bus & Trolley kiosks. Don’t forget to validate you ticket through Ticket Validating Machines either upon boarding on the vehicle (Bus, Tram and Trolley Bus) or entering the station (Metro, Suburban railway).

Useful Information | Χρήσιμες πληροφορίες Tap Water It is absolutely safe to drink the water so go ahead and pour yourself a cup. Water quality in Athens is very good so drinking water from the tap in Athens and in most major cities of Greece is perfectly safe. Drinking bottled water on most islands is advised.
Currency The monetary unit in Greece is the Euro and no other currency is accepted. It is best to exchange money at banks or official exchange agencies because in the most touristy areas a high commission is charged. Travellers Checks are also readily accepted and if you are low on cash ATM machines are readily available. Personal checks are not accepted in Greece and al-
though credit card use is widely accepted in the larger cities, some of the smaller villages and islands may have limited acceptability.
Banks Most international banks are represented in Greece and their main branch offices can be found in Athens. Greek banking hours are: Mondays through Thursdays: from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM. except Fridays where they close at 1:30 P.M.(I am not sure about this Anthoula because other banks close at 2:00 and some stay open until 4:00.)
Pickpocketing Better to be safe than sorry so invest in the money belt.
As in most major cities of the world with heavy tourist activity pickpocketing and minor theft is a common occurrence. But with various safety precautions it can be completely avoided to a large extent. When on the metro and other public transport always wear a money belt and keep valuables such as cameras, mobile phones, tablets etc in a backpack which is in the front of your body where you can see it and when in crowded areas keep your hands over the opening at all times. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery. Be especially vigilant in areas like Omonia, Monastiraki, Piraeus, Syntagma and the Acropolis - generally where many tourists/ people congregate.

Общественный транспорт Общественный транспорт в Афинах недорогой, безопасный и надежный. Благодаря ему Вы сможете лучше узнать город. Общественный транспорт в Афинах современный, эффективный, недорогой и относительно надежный. Он приспособлен для людей с ограниченными возможностями. Общественный транспорт начинает ходить в 5:30 утра, в выходные большинство маршрутов заканчивают работу в полночь. В выходные большинство транспортных средств работают дольше, но для надежности лучше уточнить информацию о нужном Вам маршруте. Общественные автобусы голубого цвета обслуживают область Аттики. Пункты назначения оранжевых автобусов находятся за пределами области Аттика. Троллейбусы ходят преимущественно в центре Афин, некоторые совершают рейсы в пригород. Трамваи начинают свой путь в центре Афин, районе Синтагма, и обслуживают южные пригороды города. В районе Палио Фалиро из окон открывается чудесный вид на море. Метро в Афинах – отличный вид транспорта, который значительно улучшил качество городской жизни. На нем можно добраться до многих районов Афин, а также до Афинского международного аэропорта. До аэропорта можно добраться и на пригородном поезде, на котором можно также доехать до Киато и Коринфа. Один общий билет может быть использован для поездок на всех видах общественного транспорта Афин, кроме транспорта, который обслуживает аэропорт. Стоимость одного билета – 1,40 евро. В Греции много аптек, в которых можно приобрести различную продукцию: отпускаемые без рецепта и по рецепту фармацевтические препараты, туалетные принадлежности и другие медицинские средства. Аптеки работают в понедельник и среду с 08:00 до 14:00, во вторник, четверг и пятницу с 08:00 до 13:30 и с 17:00 до 20:00. Пить воду из-под крана совершенно безопасно. Не бойтесь наливать себе воду из-под крана. Качество воды в Афинах очень хорошее. Пить воду из-под крана в Афинах и остальных крупных городах Греции совершенно безопасно. На большинстве островов рекомендуется пить бутилированную воду.
Как и в большинстве часто посещаемых туристами крупных городов мира, в Афинах часто случаются карманные и другие мелкие кражи. Однако, их можно практически полностью предотвратить, если соблюдать меры безопасности. Во время поездок на метро и других видах общественного транспорта всегда используйте пояс для хранения денег и храните ценные вещи, такие как фотоаппараты, мобильные телефоны, планшеты и т.д., в рюкзаке перед собой так, чтобы он находился у Вас в поле зрения. Находясь в людных местах, все время прикрывайте молнии рукой. Не надевайте дорогие украшения. ВАлютА Денежная единица Греции – евро. Другая валюта не принимается. Лучше обменивать деньги в банках или обменных пунктах, так как в большинстве туристических зон снимаются высокие комиссионные. Также принимаются дорожные чеки, а, если у Вас мало наличных денег, в городе достаточно банкоматов. Личные чеки в Греции не принимаются, и, хотя применение кредитных карт в больших городах широко распространено, в некоторых небольших городах и на островах они могут не обслуживаться.

in a while you meet someone who is truly inspiring, authentic and innovative. I was lucky enough while writing and researching this article to meet such a man. My objective was to write an article on a “Greek Success Story” partly because I wanted to write about something different to what we have been reading the past two years about Greece and partly because I always prefer writing about positive stories. So I chose to write about Coco-Mat. With the motto “Sleep on Nature” Coco-mat has established itself as one of the world’s largest eco-friendly mattress companies. Their first store opened in 1989 in Athens and today Coco-Mat has 60 stores in 11 different countries. Paul Efmorfidis is the brain, the muscle and the heart behind the phenomenal success of Coco-Mat. Reading about this success story really got me interested in its creator so I requested an interview. The meeting was set up at his hotel and it turned out to be a Coco-Mat brainstorming meeting with about 30 employees, partners and colleagues. Everyone was seated at a large wooden, monastery meal type table discussing the name of the new concept store the company was opening in Berlin. Various names were being thrown on the table. Suddenly Efmorfidis interrupted everyone and said in a loud commanding voice “I don’t care about the bloody name – I care about how we are going to make people feel – that is what has significance for me and that is what we should be talking about.” He was born 55 years ago in Sparta in Southern Greece. He left Greece when he was 19 to study and travel the world. He came back when he was 30 speaking 9 languages. In the early 80’s he was working as a teacher barely making ends meet. He studied languages, and business, worked as a teacher and a reporter before coming up with the idea to make wireless mattresses from coconut palm, seaweed, horsehair and eucalyptus. He also decided that all his products would have zippers so that nothing was secret and anyone who bought them would know exactly what was in them.

“I’ve met a lot of clever Greeks in my time who tried to rip me off. I wanted people to see me as a trustworthy Greek who was selling them a genuinely good quality product.”

It worked and soon Coco-Mat opened its own factory in Northern Greece and was exporting mattresses to Finland, Holland and Belgium. Q: “What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur”? A: “Listen carefully to 1000 different opinions but in the end do what you believe in. Do what’s in your heart and what makes you happy because that’s how the universe works. If you really want what you’re doing you will succeed.” Q: “What do you wish for greece and how would your “ideal Athens” be? A: P. E. was eating an orange when I asked him this question and he choked trying to answer…”For Greece I would want a prime minister who had no idea about politics and was not afraid to admit it and work hard. That’s what I want, a prime minister and a government who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work. None of the politicians we’ve had so far have worked at “real” jobs ever in their lives. So how can they solve our problems when they have no idea about what real life is like? How can they tell me what to do, or what’s best for me when they haven’t done it themselves?” For Athens I want a population of 1 million. Right now it’s close to 4. I mean why is EVERYTHING in Athens, why is the ministry of agriculture in the center of Athens when it should be located in the country where the farmers are? If you know your neighbor, if you are accountable to someone, things work. In a city so big no one knows anyone or is accountable to anyone. It’s a real jungle. Even if it takes 30, even 40 years, this is my wish for Athens”. Q: “What’s next for Coco-Mat, what’s next for Paul efmorfidis?” A: Laughing…”I have no idea and that is what is exciting. That is what I am looking forward to - the journey of life and not the final destination. In the mean time I plan to enjoy life, dance, make love and keep making good mattresses.

Lefteris Kapetanakis comes from a long line of gold and silver craftsmen and started to learn the trade at his brother’s workshop in his teens. He quickly developed a great loνe for his craft and learned secrets from the great masters of his art. He opened his own store in 1972 in Monastiraki and quickly established a reputation as one ofthe best filigree craftsmen. He is inspired by the great ciνilizations of Greece such as the Minoan, Mycenaean, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine. He decorates crystal, bottles, glasses, candlesticks and other decorative items with the filigree method using gold, silver, swarovski crystals and semi precious stones creating true works of art which are exceptionally elegant. His artwork can be found from Paris to Tokyo and from Hong Kong to New York and collective pieces can be found in the Folk Museum of Osaka. Tax Free Shopping As a foreigner and non EU resident travelling in Greece you can get a refund on the VAT (acronym for value added tax) tax on items purchased in Greece. In Greece this tax is called FPA and you may see it as ΦΠΑ on your receipt. Here are some simple steps to follow. First make sure that the store you are shopping from participates in the Tax Free Shopping program - there should be a sign in the window or on the cashiers desk or just ask. The merchant will ask to see your passport so have one with you. After you pay ask for your receipt and the VAT refund form. Once at the airport you will go to the Euro Exchange Office together with your receipt and completed VAT form and receive your refund. The officials may ask to see the items purchased so do this before checking in your luggage.

How the discount card works
Πως λειτουργεί η discount card
1. Each Discount Card is for one single user 2. Each Discount Card is valid for the period that is written on it 3. The Discount Card can be used by anyone over 18 years of age 4. The Discount card must be shown before ordering at a partner restaurant, bar or club and at the check out counter of partner market, or store 5. The Discount card is not a charge or debit card and the holder can not make any purchases or money exchanges 6. The holder of the Discount Card is entitled to enjoy the benefits and offers exactly as they are noted on pages in the Athens Guide, for every partner individually 7. Under no circumstances money be returned for services provided with the Discount Card 8. Some partner business may ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire for their products discount or offer to apply. This is not mandatory but it helps businesses improve the quality of their services so we highly recommend that you do 9. During sales the highest discount will apply 10. The offer or discount can not be used in combination with other offers or promotional events 11. There is no visitation limit to a particular partner business with each Discount Card as long as they are within the valid discount period that is written on the card 12. The discounts and all offers are particular to each Discount Card, each sale or table and can not be used in segments.

Ο κάτοχος της Discount Card δικαιούται να απολαύσει τις παροχές και τα προνόμια, όπως αυτά γνωστοποιούνται μέσα από το Athens Guide στην κάθε επιχείρηση ξεχωριστά. 7. Σε καμία περίπτωση η Discount Card και οι παρεχόμενες προσφορές και προνόμια δεν μπορούν να επιστραφούν έναντι χρημάτων 8. Σε ορισμένες επιχειρήσεις ενδέχεται να σας ζητηθεί η συμπλήρωση ενός απλού ερωτηματολογίου προκειμένου να ισχύσει η έκπτωση. Η συμπλήρωσή του δεν είναι υποχρεωτική, αλλά βοηθά πολύ τις επιχειρήσεις να βελτιώσουν τις υπηρεσίες τους, γι αυτό και σας προτείνουμε ανεπιφύλακτα τη συμμετοχή σας 9. Σε περιόδους εκπτώσεων θα ισχύει η μεγαλύτερη προσφορά 10.Η προσφορά δεν μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί συνδυαστικά με άλλες προσφορές ή προωθητικές ενέργειες 11.Δεν υπάρχει περιορισμός επισκέψεων σε μια επιχείρηση ανά Discount Card, αρκεί να γίνουν στο χρονικό πλαίσιο της ισχύος της 12.Η έκπτωση και οι άλλες παροχές είναι συγκεκριμένες ανά Discount Card, ανά αγορά ή ανά τραπέζι και δεν μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν αθροιστικά
