Drinking bottled water on most islands is advised. TEMPERATURES Attica and Athens’ climate is mild with temperatures ranging from 20ο to 30ο Celsius in the summer months and from 5ο to 15ο in winter. Rainfall is low while snowfall is rather rare. During the summer months there are sometimes heat waves which last two to three days, mainly in July and August. “Meltemia” is a summer wind which moderates the heat and makes the climate more pleasant. Pickpocketing EN As in most major cities of the world with heavy tourist activity pickpocketing and minor theft is a common occurrence. But with various safety precautions it can be completely avoided to a large extent.

When on the metro and other public transport always wear a money belt and keep valuables in a backpack. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery. Be especially vigilant in areas like Omonia, Monastiraki, Piraeus, Syntagma and the Acropolis - generally where many tourists/ people congregate. HOW TO USE Α TAXI IN ATHENS

Most taxis in Athens are relatively new and in a very good condition. They are clean and not very expensive. They are the most inexpensive taxis in Europe. The official taxis are of yellow colour and every taxi driver must have his license displayed on the taxi. You can take a taxi from a designated taxi stand or you can simply hail a taxi from the street. Taxi stands are available at many hotels and major destinations like the airport and the port. Don't try to hail a cab driving by at the airport-you have to use the stand with everyone else. An empty taxi should have the light on the top of the car on (only applicable at night) and also the light on the top right corner, on the cars screen. Make sure you stand at the side of the road when you want to stop a taxi and hold your hand out. Once you get into a taxi, tell him exactly where you want to go and give him the address you are going to. Read the flag fall and pricing information carefully. When you get out, make sure you check the correct amount. Pay the fees, check your belongings, then exit the taxi. The lowest fee for a short drive is 3.50 Euro even the taxi meter shows less. Other information

 Tipping is optional.  A taxi is only allowed to transfer maximum four people at a time.  Smoking is not allowed in the cab.  Seatbelts are mandatory by law if you are sitting at the front.

ARRΙVING By AIR EN “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport The primary entry into Athens is El. Venizelos airport, situated 33 km (20.5 miles) east of Athens. To get to town you have a choice between metro, suburban railway, bus, taxi and, of course, car hire.  ΑIA is connected with Athens via the metro Line 3, Nikaia - Airport & the ticket costs 9€ while the roundtrip ticket costs 16€. Alternatively you can take the suburban railway from Neratziotissa station where you can take the Metro line 1 to the city centre. or Piraeus Port.

 AIA is connected with the greater area of Athens via four EXPRESS bus routes / X93 from Kifissos & Liosion intercity bus stations / X95 from Syntagma / X96 from Piraeus Port / X97 from Elliniko metro station. Tickets cost € 5,50 | reduced €2,70 for one trip to/from AIA. All the above buses run 24hrs.  Regional buses (KTEL) connect AIA with the following destinations: Port of Rafina, Markopoulo, Port of Lavrio, Kalyvia & Keratea.  Taxi from the airport to the city centre takes an average of 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. Expect to pay from € 35 to € 55 (including freeway toll and luggage surcharge).  Most major Rent A Car companies have their offices at the airport. ARRIVING By SEA EN If you arrive in Piraeus by boat, you can use the Metro to take you to the city centre (see page 11) or the express bus X80 "PiraeusAcropolis-Syntagma". TIPS  Do not hesitate to stroll in Plaka's alleys and find hidden jems.  The shops usually open at 9am and many of those stay open all day until 9pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays shops close at 8pm. Many shops in Plaka area are also open on Sundays from 10am until 8pm (depending on the season).  There are plenty of ideas for gifts and souvenirs you can take back home on these stores.  You can combine your shopping with visiting the historic center.

Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus: A unique theatre experience One of the oldest theatres in the world, dating back to the 4th century BC, situated on the Argolis mountains, the breathtakingly beautiful Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is celebrated across the globe. Built inside the Asclepieion archaeological site, the theatre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spanning a rich history of 67 years, the Epidaurus Festival primarily features performances of ancient Greek drama. Over the years, household names have presented their work here. This summer, long-awaited world and Greek premieres are expected to thrill the theatre-loving audience that will make the trip to the beautiful Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Can you think of a more captivating theatrical experience than finding yourself at the most perfect ancient Greek theatre, famous around the world for its acoustics and aesthetics?

Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus: Just a little bit more of Epidaurus Originally built as a place of worship for the followers of Dionysus, this 4th century BC theatre was discovered as late as 1971 and is located at the Ancient Epidaurus port. Visitors pass by a fragrant orange grove on their way to the venue. The Little Theatre currently features musical productions and performances by up-and-coming artists with an alternative take on ancient drama. True to its name, this tiny gem of a theatre is a beloved destination for alternative Epidaurus audiences, with many theatre-goers choosing to watch tragedies and comedies at the Ancient Theatre on Fridays and performances at the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus on Saturdays.

Children’s creative workshop in Epidaurus After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the successful theatre education programme resumes this year, familiarizing children with the wonderful, mysterious universe of ancient myths. Concurrently with grown-ups fully immersed in watching performances at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, children are engaged in creative activities, tackling the content of those plays. The programme is coordinated by theatre researcher Elli Gavriil, in cooperation with a group of experienced teachers of theatre, music, movement, and arts education (Angeliki Tsakona, Elpida Komianou, Alkisti Vasilakou, Vasilis Kalagias, Anastasia Kordari, Mara Kalantzi). Every Friday & Saturday during the performances held at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, in collaboration with the International Network of Ancient Drama. Aimed at children ages 5 -12.

EN The War Museum presents the military history of the Greeks, from ancient times to date. It is the largest war museum in Greece and one of the largest in Southeastern Europe since 1975. It is located in one of the most central areas of Athens and receives tens of thousands of visitors each year. Its exceptional building follows a modernist architectural design. Unique works of art are being exhibited in the Museum's various halls, such as numerous types of weaponry, military uniforms, photographs, and archival material, as well as dioramas projecting important historical events. In the exterior space of the museum, there is also an exhibition of war aircraft and artillery of various calibers. The War Museum's most prominent exhibits are included in the Peter Saroglou Collection, which is housed in a specially adapted hall and consists of original weapons and war accessories of various historical periods and civilizations. The War Museum remains a dynamic space for active learning, as thousands of students visit it every year. They learn about important moments in Greek history through guided tours or experiential programs. GR Το Πολεμικό Μουσείο προβάλλει την πολεμική ιστορία των Ελλήνων, από την αρχαιότητα έως τις ημέρες μας. Πρόκειται για το μεγαλύτερο πολεμικό μουσείο στην Ελλάδα και ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα στη Νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη από το 1975. Τα κορυφαία Εκθέματα του Πολεμικού Μουσείου περιλαμβάνονται στη Συλλογή του Πέτρου Σαρόγλου, η οποία βρίσκεται σε ειδικά διαμορφωμένη αίθουσα και αποτελείται από πρωτότυπα όπλα και πολεμικά εξαρτήματα, διαφόρων ιστορικών περιόδων και πολιτισμών. Παράλληλα, το Μουσείο αποτελεί έναν δυναμικό χώρο ενεργητικής μάθησης, καθώς χιλιάδες μαθητές το επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο. The main characteristic of this movement is the use of excellent quality seasonal raw material as provided by the central market of Greece. The traditional refrigerated showcases and counters of the butchers have been transformed into kitchens and places for preparing food and drink kiosks. If you enter the central arcade of the Varvakios Market from Athinas Street (Aristogitonos Street), you will meet the first ceviche kiosk on your right hand side and while walking along the arcade you will also see the Japanese food kiosks, the lemon bar, the traditional Greek seafood recipes kiosk and finally, the one of fresh pasta.
