Athens between the months November-March is a city you can truly enjoy. Winter sun is often so intense, that one can only tell it’s winter because the days are shorter. With negligible rain and snowfall, our city has the largest percentage of sunny days compared to other European capitals and as for the cold, we get really low temperatures only 10 days per year.

Let yourself explore archeological sites and museums, take a break from all the sightseeing and enjoy a cup of coffee, like Athenians do. Go shopping, feast upon a succulent meal in one of the countless restaurants, and finish your day with a drink overlooking the Acropolis.

What ever you decide to do we wish you have a pleasant stay and an unforgettable experience in Athens.

TEMpERATURES

Attica and Athens’ climate is mild with tem peratures ranging from 20ο to 30ο Celsius in the summer months and from 5ο to 15ο in winter. Rainfall is low while snowfall is rather rare. During the summer months there are sometimes heat waves which last two to three days, mainly in July and August. “Meltemia” is a summer wind which moderates the heat and makes the climate more pleasant.

EN As in most major cities of the world with heavy tourist activity pickpocketing and minor theft is a common occurrence. But with various safety precautions it can be completely avoided to a large extent. When on the metro and other public trans port always wear a money belt and keep valuables in a backpack. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery. Be especially vigilant in areas like Omonia, Monastiraki, Piraeus, Syntagma and the Acropolis - generally where many tourists/ people congregate.

EN The monetary unit in Greece is the Euro & no other currency is accepted. It is best to exchange money at banks or official exchange agencies because in the most touristy areas a high commission is charged. Travellers Checks are also readily accepted and if you are low on cash ATM machines are readily available. Personal checks are not accepted in Greece and although credit card use is widely accepted in the larger cities, some of the smaller villages & islands may have limited acceptability.

Most taxis in Athens are relatively new and in a very good condition. They are clean and not very expensive. They are the most inexpensive taxis in Europe. The official taxis are of yellow colour and every taxi driver must have his license displayed on the taxi.

You can take a taxi from a designated taxi stand or you can simply hail a taxi from the street. Taxi stands are available at many hotels and major destinations like the airport and the port. Don't try to hail a cab driving by at the airport-you have to use the stand with everyone else.

An empty taxi should have the light on the top of the car on (only applicable at night) and also the light on the top right corner, on the cars screen.

Make sure you stand at the side of the road when you want to stop a taxi and hold your hand out.

Once you get into a taxi, tell him exactly where you want to go and give him the address you are going to. Read the flag fall and pricing information carefully. When you get out, make sure you check the correct amount. Pay the fees, check your belongings, then exit the taxi. The lowest fee for a short drive is 3.50 Euro even the taxi meter shows less.

Metro, Buses, Trolley-Buses, Tram & Suburban Railway (Magoula-Piraeus-Koropi)*

EN A new ticketing system is taking place in Athens. You can purchase either an ΑΤΗ. ΕΝΑ CARD or an ATH.ENA TICKET for your transports. You will need to have either one in order to enter or exit the metro stations, or to take a bus, trolley & tram.

The ΑΤΗ.ΕΝΑ CARD is a debit type card on which you can add credit for tickets at the designated selling points inside the metro stations.

The ATH.ENA TICKET can be used for one ticket product or you can add extra credits on it.

Both of them can be purchased through the ticket booths found inside every metro station. The ATH.ENA TICKET can also be purchased by the automated ticket machines placed inside every metro station. The ticket machines do not accept credit cards at the moment.

EN “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens Interna tional Airport

The primary entry into Athens is El. Venizelos airport, situated 33 km (20.5 miles) east of Athens. To get to town you have a choice between metro, suburban railway, bus, taxi and, of course, car hire.



ΑIA is connected with Athens via the metro Line 3, Nikaia - Airport & the ticket costs 9€ while the roundtrip ticket costs 16€. Alternatively you can take the suburban railway from Neratziotissa station where you can take the Metro line 1 to the city centre. or Piraeus Port.



AIA is connected with the greater area of Athens via four EXPRESS bus routes / X93 from Kifissos & Liosion intercity bus stations / X95 from Syntagma / X96 from Piraeus Port / X97 from Elliniko metro station.

Tickets cost € 6 | reduced €3 for one trip to/from AIA. All the above buses run 24hrs.



Regional buses (KTEL) connect AIA with the following destinations: Port of Rafina, Markopoulo, Port of Lavrio, Kalyvia & Keratea.



Taxi from the airport to the city centre takes an average of 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. Expect to pay from € 35 to € 55 (including freeway toll and luggage surcharge).



ARRIVING By SEA

EN If you arrive in Piraeus by boat, you can use the Metro to take you to the city centre (see page 11) or the express bus X80 "PiraeusAcropolis-Syntagma". There is a free bus service that runs inside the harbour you can use to take you there if you disembark far away from the main entrance. Taxis are available on the front of the main terminal. Do note that they charge extra for pick up & luggage.

ARRIVING By TRAIN, lONG dISTANCE BUSES

EN The main train station (Larissis station) is not very far from the city centre. You can use the Metro (there is a station outside the main terminal) or a bus to take you anywhere in Athens. There are two long distance Bus stations. They are connected with the city centre & major Metro stations via buses. Taxis are available on the stations. Do note that they charge extra for pick up & luggage.

Do not hesitate to stroll in Plaka's alleys and nd hidden jems.

The shops usually open at 9am and many of those stay open all day until 9pm from Monday to Friday.

On Saturdays shops close at 8pm. Many shops in Plaka area are also open on Sundays from 10am until 8pm (depending on the season).

There are plenty of ideas for gifts and souvenirs you can take back home on these stores.

Its participation through exhibitions and scholarly activities is a natural consequence of the role which the BCM played as a national museum and a public body in the planned reception and handling of the “refugee heirlooms” that constituted property of the Asia Minor Christian communities, around 300 of which now belong to the Museum’s collections. The Museum played an equally active role in the subsequent manipulation of the Asia Minor Hellenism memory and the dramatic events that marked its end, which was simultaneously a turning point in the history of modern Greek society.

WAR MUSEUM

EN The War Museum presents the military history of the Greeks, from ancient times to date. It is the largest war museum in Greece and one of the largest in Southeastern Europe since 1975. It is located in one of the most central areas of Athens and receives tens of thousands of visitors each year. Its exceptional building follows a modernist architectural design.

Unique works of art are being exhibited in the Museum's various halls, such as numer ous types of weaponry, military uniforms, photographs, and archival material, as well as dioramas projecting important historical events. In the exterior space of the museum, there is also an exhibition of war aircraft and artillery of various calibers. The War Mu seum's most prominent exhibits are included in the Peter Saroglou Collection, which is housed in a specially adapted hall and consists of original weapons and war accessories of various historical periods and civilizations.

The War Museum remains a dynamic space for active learning, as thousands of students visit it every year. They learn about important moments in Greek history through guided tours or experiential programs.

EN The Tower of the Winds, known as Aerides or Horologion of Kyrrhestes, is an octagonal tower made from Pentelic marble. It was constructed by the Greek astronomer Andronikos of Cyrrhus. It had a wind vane, as well as a sundial and an internal water clock, for the days without sun. EN The Pnyx hill is located between the hill of the Filopappos and the Mars hill, west of the Acropolis. It was the place

where the Assembly of the Athenians held its meetings. It is an open.

EN In Varvakios Market, the central fish, meat & vegetable market of Athens, a gastronomic movement appeared in early September 2021 called Hasapika Central Market. The main characteristic of this movement is the use of excellent quality seasonal raw material as provided by the central market of Greece.

The traditional refrigerated showcases and counters of the butchers have been transformed into kitchens and places for preparing food and drink kiosks.

If you enter the central arcade of the Varvakios Market from Athinas Street (Aristogitonos Street), you will meet the first ceviche kiosk on your right hand side and while walking along the arcade you will also see the Japanese food kiosks, the lemon bar, the traditional Greek seafood recipes kiosk and finally, the one of fresh pasta.
