I welcome you to Rhodes, an island with 5,000 years of history, which has been a meeting point for different peoples and cultures, as reflected in all the expressions of life on the island.

The visitors of the island, no matter where they choose to wander, they will find themselves surrounded by monuments representing the island’s 50-century history. From the Medieval City, one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Acropolis of Lindos, the ancient Kamiros and the castles of Archangelos, Kritinia and Monolithos, every corner of Rhodes offers a chance to meet the different civilisations that developed on the island.

The magic begins in the Medieval City, where you will feel surrounded by the atmosphere of another era. Walk the cobbled streets, take a picture in front of a stone mansion or a tower, visit the museums and the archaeological sites, become a model for the street painters and pose for your portrait, pick clever gifts for the people you love. In the city centre acclimate yourself to the locals’ mode of life. Rhodes is truly vibrant. Every day the people are on the streets, drinking coffee, chatting, having a walk. Immerse yourself in the joyful crowd. Pick a nice café or one of the numerous restaurants and taste international cuisines or the unique Greek gastronomy. If you love shopping, use this guide to find the most famous brands and the largest international brand names, as well as several suggestions that suit every taste, even the most demanding ones. Ξεκινήστε νωρίς το πρωί, απολαμβάνοντας ένα πλούσιο πρωινό!

-1Are you interested in history? Go for a walk at the charming Medieval Town, which is considered as the “heart” of Rhodes. Visit the Archaeological Museum, the imposing Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Saint John at the top of the Street of Knights, the lodgings of the tongues (English, french, Spanish, Italian) and the other archaeological sites and comprehend its history (pg 28-31).

-1Σας ενδιαφέρει η ιστορία; Κάντε μια βόλτα στη γοητευτική Μεσαιωνική Πόλη, το ιστορικό κέντρο της Ρόδου. Whether you want to have a snack or lunch, traditional or modern, Greek or international see for options at pages 58-63. There are very nice restaurants and taverns all around Rhodes with excellent food.

Venture out on your own and discover the beautiful small villages of the island, go off the beaten track, cycle, kayak, ect. or choose a guided tour or even a cruise to nearby islands, as the picturesque island of Simi (pg 44-45).

Take a look at pages 47-56 and find the ideal gift for yourself or your loved ones.

Υπάρχει άνετο πάρκινγκ, τραπεζάκια για αναψυκτικό και καφεδάκι και δίπλα ακριβώς είναι η είσοδος για το Μοναστήρι της Φιλέρημου. Η μονή είναι αφιερωμένη στην Παναγία και χτίστηκε το 13ο αιώνα. Απέναντι από την είσοδο του Μοναστηριού είναι η είσοδος της οδού του Μαρτυρίου: ένας λιθόστρωτος δρόμος με μπρούτζινες απεικονίσεις των Παθών του Ιησού και της ανάβασής Tου στον Γολγοθά. Στο τέλος της διαδρομής, ορθώνεται ένας ψηλός σταυρός 18 μέτρων. Μπορεί κανείς να ανέβει την στρογγυλή σιδερένια σκάλα στο εσωτερικό του, και να θαυμάσει την θέα από το οριζόντιο τμήμα του σταυρού. - 10 κασΤρα Το κάστρο του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου Ντεμιλύ στην Αρχάγγελο (Map1, VI4). Το κάστρο της Μονολίθου (Map1, I6) πάνω στον θεόρατο βράχο από όπου οι Ιωαννίτες Ιππότες αγνάντευαν το απέραντο γαλάζιο. Το μεσαιωνικό κάστρο της Κρητηνίας (Map1, II4), γωνστό & ως Καστέλλος. Το κάστρο των ιπποτών του Ασκληπιού (Ασκληπιείο)(Map1, IV6) με τις στέρνες και το μεγάλο τείχος. Όλα τους χτισμένα τον 15ο αιώνα, όλα τους με ελεύθερη είσοδο, όλα τους μεγαλόπρεποι μάρτυρες της Ιστορίας του νησιού.

There is ample parking in the shade of a giant tree & tables for refreshments and coffee right next to the entrance to the monastery Filerimos. The monastery is dedicated to Virgin Mary and was built in the 13th century. Opposite the entrance of the monastery is the entrance to the holy road: a road paved with bronze representations of the Passion of Jesus and of His ascent to Calvary. At the end of the route, before us stands a cross 18 meters tall. One can climb the round iron staircase that exists inside and admire the view from the horizontal part of the cross. A view unspeakable and full of beaches, green forests as a green sea, villages and airport.

So, as a first step in October 1997, on its own initiative and funding, a photo exhibition was opened in the area next to the Synagogue. A separate showcase has been reserved for the hosting of fossilized organisms of the most remote past dating from the Triadic era (230 million years). IALYSSOS / ιΑλΥσοσ [MAP 1, VI2 & MAP 5] ΕΝ Ialyssos (8 km from the town of Rhodes), one of the three powerful citystates of Rhodes, is situated today in the area of Filerimos. The archaeological excavations have brought into light findings that prove the habitation of the area in the very old times. Scant remains of the Acropolis of ancient Ialyssos as well as vestiges of the foundations of the Athena and Zeus temples are to be seen. Τhe monastery of the Holy Virgin of Filerimos, the Gothic church of Our Lady of Filerimos as well as the Cavalry – a stone paved road with fourteen copper engravings placed on bases, representing the Stations of the Cross are some of the sights you should see. KAMIROS / ΚΑμειΡοσ [MAP 1, III3] ΕΝ Kamiros, like Lindos and Ialyssos was one of the three powerful cities of Rhodes. Kamiros was inhabited from prehistoric times to the early Christian era. The city of Kamiros was built amphi-theatrically on a hill and on its highest spot stood the unfortified Acropolis of the town of Kamiros. On the Acropolis one can see today remains of the Athena temple as well as a 6th BC century cistern and a Stoa of a 200 metres length. The private houses of the city, to the north of the Acropolis are very well preserved and interesting to visit. LINDOS / λινδοσ [MAP 1, V6] EN Lindos is situated in the east part of the island, 50 km from the town of Rhodes. It was a powerful Doric city-state and together with Ialyssos and Kamiros played a leading role in the history of the island. Lindos town is a very busy one with a great number of shops, tavernas, bars and coffee-shops. Worth visiting in Lindos are: • The cruciform church of Our Lady, with its octagonal cupola, the unusual bulfy and the 17th century wall-paintings. • The churches of St. Nicholas, St. George, St. Minas and St. Demetrius.

THE MANSION OF LINDOS ΤΑ ΑΡΧονΤιΚΑ ΤΗσ λινδοΥ [MAP 1, V6] ΕΝ The mansions of Lindos are very interesting because of their particular architectural style, which is a mixture of Byzantine, Medieval and insular elements. Built between the 17th and the 19th century. They are usually built behind a tall wall, the courtyard is paved with pebbles and the gates are richly decorated with arched or rectangular lintels. GR Τα αρχοντικά της λίνδου έχουν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον λόγω της ιδιαίτερης αρχιτεκτονικής τους, ένα μείγμα από βυζαντινά, μεσαιωνικά, αραβικά και νησιωτικά στοιχεία. IBRAIM'S MOSQUE ΤΖΑμι ΤοΥ ιμΠΡΑΗμ ΠΑσΑ [MAP 4, L9] ΕΝ Ibraim’s Mosque is located at Sofokleous Street in the old town of Rhodes. It is the oldest Islamic monument of Rhodes town, built in 1531, only a few years after the occupation of the Turks. It is still used for religious ceremonies and services of the Islamic community of Rhodes. Ibraim’s μosque is a worth visiting monument, while being in Rhodes. GR Το Τζαμί του ιμπραήμ Πασά βρίσκεται στην οδό σοφοκλέους στην παλιά πόλη της Ρόδου. είναι το παλαιότερο ισλαμικό μνημείο της πόλης της Ρόδου, που χτίστηκε το 1531, λίγα μόλις χρόνια μετά την κατοχή των Τούρκων. εξακολουθεί να χρησιμοποιείται για τις θρησκευτικές τελετές και τις υπηρεσίες της ισλαμικής κοινότητας της Ρόδου. PETALOUDES. THE BUTTERFLIES’ PARK ΠεΤΑλοΥδεσ, ΠΑΡΚο ΤΩν ΠεΤΑλοΥδΩν [MAP 1, V3] ΕΝ The site of Petaloudes (butterflies) is situated 26 km from the town of Rhodes. It is a lush green valley with a little river running through it. The site is beautifully arranged, with smaller wooden bridges, stone steps and many pathways. The Valley of the Butterflies is a very nice natural park, where from June to September, every year thousands of butterflies used to appear (nowadays not that many). You can walk in this wonderful place under the shadow of the trees and admire the multicolored butterflies. The scent of the pine resin, the coolness of the site and the butterflies make this site attractive to visitors, who really enjoy their stay in it. GR Το πάρκο των πεταλούδων βρίσκεται 26 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη της Ρόδου. είναι μια καταπράσινη κοιλάδα με ένα μικρό ποτάμι που τη διασχίζει. είναι ένα πολύ ωραίο φυσικό πάρκο, όπου από τον ιούνιο έως τον σεπτέμβριο, κάθε χρόνο, χιλιάδες πεταλούδες συνήθιζαν να εμφανίζονται (στις μέρες μας δεν είναι και τόσες πολλές). Η μυρωδιά της ρητίνης από τα πεύκα, η δροσιά του χώρου και οι πεταλούδες, κάνουν αυτό το πάρκο πολύ ελκυστικό στους επισκέπτες.
