I welcome you to Rhodes, an island with 5,000 years of history, which has been a meeting point for different peoples and cultures, as reflected in all the expressions of life on the island.

The visitors of the island, no matter where they choose to wander, they will find themselves surrounded by monuments representing the island’s 50-century history. From the Medieval City, one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Acropolis of Lindos, the ancient Kamiros and the castles of Archangelos, Kritinia and Monolithos, every corner of Rhodes offers a chance to meet the different civilisations that developed on the island.

-1Are you interested in history? Go for a walk at the charming Medieval Town, which is considered as the “heart” of Rhodes. Visit the Archaeological Museum, the imposing Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Saint John at the top of the Street of Knights, the lodgings of the tongues (English, french, Spanish, Italian) and the other archaeological sites and comprehend its history (pg 28-31).

The center of Rhodes, around Cyprus Square, as well as the Medieval Town, are a shoppers’ paradise. Prestigious department stores, famous cosmetic brands, well-known international brands but also small local stores, Greek brands, handmade leather goods, jewelry, souvenir shops, traditional products and many more. Take a look at pages 47-56 and find the ideal gift for yourself or your loved ones.

The monetary unit in Greece is the Euro and no other currency is accepted. It is best to exchange money at banks or official exchange agencies. Travellers Checks are also readily accepted and if you are low on cash ATM machines are readily available. Personal checks are not accepted in Greece and although credit card use is widely accepted in the large cities, some of the smaller villages in the island may have limited acceptability.

The castle of the Knights of Asclepius (Asklipiio) (Map1, IV6) with cisterns and the great wall. All built in the 15th century, all with free admission, all the grandiose witnesses of history of the island.

-9ΦιλέρΗμοσ MAP 1, Vi 2 & MAP 5 A-b 4 Βρίσκεται στην Aκρόπολη της αρχαίας Ιαλυσού. Ο άνετος δρόμος μας οδηγεί στο εκκλησάκι του Προφήτη Ηλία και μετά από λίγες ακόμα απότομες στροφές στην Φιλέρημο. Υπάρχει άνετο πάρκινγκ, τραπεζάκια για αναψυκτικό και καφεδάκι και δίπλα ακριβώς είναι η είσοδος για το Μοναστήρι της Φιλέρημου. Η μονή είναι αφιερωμένη στην Παναγία και χτίστηκε το 13ο αιώνα. Απέναντι από την είσοδο του Μοναστηριού είναι η είσοδος της οδού του Μαρτυρίου: ένας λιθόστρωτος δρόμος με μπρούτζινες απεικονίσεις των Παθών του Ιησού και της ανάβασής Tου στον Γολγοθά. Στο τέλος της διαδρομής, ορθώνεται ένας ψηλός σταυρός 18 μέτρων. Μπορεί κανείς να ανέβει την στρογγυλή σιδερένια σκάλα στο εσωτερικό του, και να θαυμάσει την θέα από το οριζόντιο τμήμα του σταυρού.

- 10 κασΤρα Το κάστρο του Μεγάλου Μαγίστρου Ντεμιλύ στην Αρχάγγελο (Map1, VI4). Το κάστρο της Μονολίθου (Map1, I6) πάνω στον θεόρατο βράχο από όπου οι Ιωαννίτες Ιππότες αγνάντευαν το απέραντο γαλάζιο. Το μεσαιωνικό κάστρο της Κρητηνίας (Map1, II4), γωνστό & ως Καστέλλος. Το κάστρο των ιπποτών του Ασκληπιού (Ασκληπιείο)(Map1, IV6) με τις στέρνες και το μεγάλο τείχος. Όλα τους χτισμένα τον 15ο αιώνα, όλα τους με ελεύθερη είσοδο, όλα τους μεγαλόπρεποι μάρτυρες της Ιστορίας του νησιού.

road between green pines and amazing view. The comfortable path with spectacular views leads us to the church of the Prophet Ilias, and after a few more sharp turns to Filerimos. There is ample parking in the shade of a giant tree & tables for refreshments and coffee right next to the entrance to the monastery Filerimos. The monastery is dedicated to Virgin Mary and was built in the 13th century. Opposite the entrance of the monastery is the entrance to the holy road: a road paved with bronze representations of the Passion of Jesus and of His ascent to Calvary. At the end of the route, before us stands a cross 18 meters tall. One can climb the round iron staircase that exists inside and admire the view from the horizontal part of the cross. A view unspeakable and full of beaches, green forests as a green sea, villages and airport.

Museum. It was built at the site of the lower Acropolis of ancient Rhodes, where the temple of God Helios was originally located. At the same location in the 7th century there was a Byzantine palace and then in the 14th century, the knights of St. John built the palace as the residence of the Grand Master and as the administrative center of the city.

GR Το παλάτι του μεγάλου μαγίστρου ή Καστέλο λειτουργεί και ως Βυζαντινό μουσείο. Χτίστηκε στη θέση της κάτω Ακρόπολης της αρχαίας Ρόδου, εκεί που αρχικά βρισκόταν ο ναός του Θεού Ήλιου. στην ίδια θέση τον 7ο αιώνα υπήρχε ένα βυζαντινό παλάτι και στη συνέχεια τον 14ο αιώνα, οι ιππότες του Αγίου ιωάννου κατασκεύασαν το παλάτι ως κατοικία του μεγάλου μαγίστρου και ως διοικητικό κέντρο της πόλης.

He noticed the lack of information from the local community but also from the visitors of the island, about the unique history of the community, but also about the only remaining Synagogue "Kahal Shalom".

So, as a first step in October 1997, on its own initiative and funding, a photo exhibition was opened in the area next to the Synagogue.

GR To εβραϊκό μουσείο της Ρόδου ξεκίνησε το 1997 από τον Αρών Χασών δικηγόρο από το λος Άντζελες και Ροδίτη τρίτης γενιάς. Παρατήρησε την έλλειψη ενημέρωσης της τοπικής κοινωνίας αλλά και των επισκεπτών του νησιού, για τη μοναδική ιστορία της Κοινότητας αλλά και για τη μοναδική απομένουσα συναγωγή «Kahal Shalom». Έτσι σαν πρώτο βήμα τον οκτώβριο 1997, με δική του πρωτοβουλία και χρηματοδότηση, άνοιξε τις πόρτες της μια έκθεση με φωτογραφικό υλικό στο χώρο δίπλα στη συναγωγή όπου ήταν παλιά ο γυναικωνίτης.

STAMATIADIS MINERALOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY MUSEUM μοΥσειο οΡΥΚΤολοΓιΑσ ΚΑι ΠΑλΑιονΤολοΓιΑσ (ΠολΥΧΡονΗ σΤΑμΑΤιΑδΗ) EN It is the first of its kind, both in Rhodes and within the greater area of the Dodecanese. Its collection consists of minerals and fossils from Greece and other parts of the world. Beautiful specimens of Azurite, Malachite, amazing Calcite and Galena along with several copper and lead-bearing minerals and many more are showcased.

A separate showcase has been reserved for the hosting of fossilized organisms of the most remote past dating from the Triadic era (230 million years). Also on show: fossilized fish from Brazil, from the Cretedic era (110 million years). A special mention is to be made of the Trilobites, from Marocco, dating from the Ordovician era (450 million years) as well as of the crocodile's scull, from the Miocenic era.

TRADITIONAL HOUSES IN KOSKINOU VILLAGE ΠΑΡΑδοσιΑΚοσ οιΚισμοσ ΚοσΚινοΥ EN It consists of houses with colorful facades, beautiful courtyards with typical Rhodian colour and its traditional interior decoration with ceramic dishes and woven hanging on the walls. It is located in the village of Koskinou. The preserved traditional house in the center of Koskinou village revives the tradition, art and nobility of the village people. The interior decoration with ceramic dishes and woven walls fascinates visitors.

GR ο παραδοσιακός οικισμός Κοσκινού αποτελείται από σπίτια με πολύχρωμες προσόψεις, όμορφες αυλές με το χαρακτηριστικό ροδίτικο χοχλακάκι και την παραδοσιακή εσωτερική του διακόσμηση με κεραμικά πιάτα και υφαντά στους τοίχους. Βρίσκεται στο χωριό Κοσκινού. Το διατηρητέο παραδοσιακό σπίτι στο κέντρο του χωριού Κοσκινού αναβιώνει την παράδοση, την τέχνη και την αρχοντιά των ανθρώπων του χωριού. Η εσωτερική διακόσμηση με κεραμικά πιάτα και υφαντά στους τοίχους γοητεύει τους επισκέπτες.

IALYSSOS / ιΑλΥσοσ [MAP 1, VI2 & MAP 5] ΕΝ Ialyssos (8 km from the town of Rhodes), one of the three powerful citystates of Rhodes, is situated today in the area of Filerimos. The archaeological excavations have brought into light findings that prove the habitation of the area in the very old times.

Scant remains of the Acropolis of ancient Ialyssos as well as vestiges of the foundations of the Athena and Zeus temples are to be seen. Τhe monastery of the Holy Virgin of Filerimos, the Gothic church of Our Lady of Filerimos as well as the Cavalry – a stone paved road with fourteen copper engravings placed on bases, representing the Stations of the Cross are some of the sights you should see.

Η ιερά μονή της Παναγίας της φιλερήμου, η γοτθική εκκλησία της Παναγίας της φιλερήμου, καθώς ο δρόμος του Γολγοθά, ένας λιθοστρωμένος διάδρομος με 14 χαλκογραφίες σε μια πλευρά του, στημένες πάνω σε βάθρα, οι οποίες αναπαριστούν τα πάθη του Χριστού, είναι μερικά από τα αξιοθέατα που αξίζει να επισκεφτείτε.

KAMIROS / ΚΑμειΡοσ [MAP 1, III3] ΕΝ Kamiros, like Lindos and Ialyssos was one of the three powerful cities of Rhodes.

Kamiros was inhabited from prehistoric times to the early Christian era. The city of Kamiros was built amphi-theatrically on a hill and on its highest spot stood the unfortified Acropolis of the town of Kamiros.

On the Acropolis one can see today remains of the Athena temple as well as a 6th BC century cistern and a Stoa of a 200 metres length. The private houses of the city, to the north of the Acropolis are very well preserved and interesting to visit.

GR Η Κάμειρος, όπως η λίνδος και η ιαλυσός ήταν μία από τις τρεις ισχυρότερες πόλεις της Ρόδου. Η Κάμειρος κατοικούνταν από τους προϊστορικούς χρόνους έως την παλαιοχριστιανική εποχή. μετέπειτα σταδιακά εγκαταλείφθηκε από τους κατοίκους της, για λόγους που ακόμα δεν γνωρίζουμε. Η πόλη της Καμείρου χτίστηκε αμφιθεατρικά σε ένα λόφο και στο ψηλότερο σημείο του δέσποζε η Ακρόπολη της Καμείρου. στην Ακρόπολη μπορεί κανείς να δει σήμερα ερείπια του ναού της Αθηνάς, καθώς και μια δεξαμενή του 6ου π.Χ. αιώνα και μια στοά μήκους 200 μέτρων.

LINDOS / λινδοσ [MAP 1, V6] EN Lindos is situated in the east part of the island, 50 km from the town of Rhodes.

It was a powerful Doric city-state and together with Ialyssos and Kamiros played a leading role in the history of the island.

Lindos town is a very busy one with a great number of shops, tavernas, bars and coffee-shops.

Worth visiting in Lindos are: • The cruciform church of Our Lady, with its octagonal cupola, the unusual bulfy and the 17th century wall-paintings.

• The churches of St. Nicholas, St. George, St. Minas and St. Demetrius.

Ήταν μια ισχυρή δωρική πόλη-κράτος και μαζί με την ιαλυσό και την Κάμειρο διαδραμάτισε πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στην ιστορία του νησιού. Monuments from the ancient times like the Athena temple, the Great Doric Stoa, the Monumental Staircase with its 34 steps, the Propylaea as well as monuments from the Byzantine and Medieval era alongside the breathtaking view, make the visit to the Lindos Acropolis an unforgettable experience.

THE MANSION OF LINDOS ΤΑ ΑΡΧονΤιΚΑ ΤΗσ λινδοΥ [MAP 1, V6] ΕΝ The mansions of Lindos are very interesting because of their particular architectural style, which is a mixture of Byzantine, Medieval and insular elements.

Built between the 17th and the 19th century. They are usually built behind a tall wall, the courtyard is paved with pebbles and the gates are richly decorated with arched or rectangular lintels.

GR Τα αρχοντικά της λίνδου έχουν μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον λόγω της ιδιαίτερης αρχιτεκτονικής τους, ένα μείγμα από βυζαντινά, μεσαιωνικά, αραβικά και νησιωτικά στοιχεία. Χτισμένα μεταξύ του 17ου και του 19ου αιώνα, είναι συνήθως χτισμένα πίσω από ένα ψηλό τοίχο, η αυλή είναι στρωμένη με βότσαλα και οι πύλες πλούσια διακοσμημένες με τοξωτούς ή ορθογώνιους φεγγίτες.

INTERESTING SITES ΑΞΙΟΘΕΑΤΑ

IBRAIM'S MOSQUE ΤΖΑμι ΤοΥ ιμΠΡΑΗμ ΠΑσΑ [MAP 4, L9] ΕΝ Ibraim’s Mosque is located at Sofokleous Street in the old town of Rhodes. It is the oldest Islamic monument of Rhodes town, built in 1531, only a few years after the occupation of the Turks. It is still used for religious ceremonies and services of the Islamic community of Rhodes. Ibraim’s μosque is a worth visiting monument, while being in Rhodes.

GR Το Τζαμί του ιμπραήμ Πασά βρίσκεται στην οδό σοφοκλέους στην παλιά πόλη της Ρόδου. είναι το παλαιότερο ισλαμικό μνημείο της πόλης της Ρόδου, που χτίστηκε το 1531, λίγα μόλις χρόνια μετά την κατοχή των Τούρκων. εξακολουθεί να χρησιμοποιείται για τις θρησκευτικές τελετές και τις υπηρεσίες της ισλαμικής κοινότητας της Ρόδου.

PETALOUDES. THE BUTTERFLIES’ PARK ΠεΤΑλοΥδεσ, ΠΑΡΚο ΤΩν ΠεΤΑλοΥδΩν [MAP 1, V3] ΕΝ The site of Petaloudes (butterflies) is situated 26 km from the town of Rhodes.

It is a lush green valley with a little river running through it. The site is beautifully arranged, with smaller wooden bridges, stone steps and many pathways. The Valley of the Butterflies is a very nice natural park, where from June to September, every year thousands of butterflies used to appear (nowadays not that many). You can walk in this wonderful place under the shadow of the trees and admire the multicolored butterflies. The scent of the pine resin, the coolness of the site and the butterflies make this site attractive to visitors, who really enjoy their stay in it.

GR Το πάρκο των πεταλούδων βρίσκεται 26 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη της Ρόδου. είναι μια καταπράσινη κοιλάδα με ένα μικρό ποτάμι που τη διασχίζει. είναι ένα πολύ ωραίο φυσικό πάρκο, όπου από τον ιούνιο έως τον σεπτέμβριο, κάθε χρόνο, χιλιάδες πεταλούδες συνήθιζαν να εμφανίζονται (στις μέρες μας δεν είναι και τόσες πολλές). Η μυρωδιά της ρητίνης από τα πεύκα, η δροσιά του χώρου και οι πεταλούδες, κάνουν αυτό το πάρκο πολύ ελκυστικό στους επισκέπτες.
