_“Create Your Own Style“_

Interior design seminar at Velios School of Art, 2013 Agniezska, 29 from Poland & James, 35, from England met in Athens 3 years ago and fell madly in love with each other. She's a sophisticated lawyer and he's a travel journalist of exotic destinations. They like spending time at their house and she uses one room as her office space. Gatherings with friends, cooking, listening to music, tasting wines & planning their next exotic trip are just few of their hobbies. She loves Latin music, shells & art, he loves reggae music, cooking & collecting souvenirs. During the conceptual process, the couples hobbies, activities & likes were presented in a free shaped but yet expandable mood-board by pictures of the couple’s interests, so as to experiment and define the atmosphere, textures, smells, tastes, senses and feelings I wanted to give to their space. The freshness of their relationship, the impressions & the objects of their exotic trips should fit in a space that would imply, embrace & communicate the uniqueness of this multicultural house in the north suburbs of Athens. The significance of their meeting in Greece, is underlined by the planting of a fresh olive tree in the middle of the house, ‘dividing’ the functions of ‘cooking’ & ‘relaxing’. Symbol of their presence in here & now, the olive tree blends in these exotic representations with the Greek essence. The functions diagram forms the areas of the house, creating an office that can accommodate both Agniezska’s & James's needs for working/writing. Office space can also work separately of the rest of the house if needed. Kitchen and lining-room are in one open-space room but yet they differentiate with a layer difference of two steps. Kitchen is located in the higher level of the house along with the bathroom both emphasizing the daydream of an exotic trip in flavors and sensations. Office and livingroom in the lower level both fulfill their ‘alone & together’ needs for working in peace and relaxing with company.

Participation on the 2nd Hellenic Interior Design Contest of Edike, Athens, 2013

Contest Participatio n

in collaboration with architect Voula Stamatiou (www.edike-diagonismos.gr)

The object of the contest was the renovation of an old apartment. Within the objectives were the re-designing the interior space of the flat so it could satisfy the needs of the new residents (a 4 member family & the couple of the grandparents) as well as upgrading the exterior of the building with eco – friendly materials. The concept is based on the central idea of the ancient Greek idea of ‘estia’ where all the members of the family gather all around the holy fire. ‘Estia’ was the core of the ancient Greek family that was bonded with sacred ties among its members, new & pas generations. The centered kitchen is providing undivided flow for all the residents and permits the constant motion to and from other rooms. Located right across the entrance so it will welcome the visitor, close to the dining room so it will serve the needs of the big family. Living room is large enough and undivided from the dining room so it doesn’t interrupt the ‘dialog’ between ‘we eat – we talk – we communicate’ among the members of the family. The elderly have their own bedroom with their private bathroom so they can be sufficient and independent from the rest of the residents. The same principle runs throughout the parents master bedroom, with their own private bathroom and the kids bedroom. This one has been designed, taking in mind the difference of the different gender between the kids, their age and a potential desire to divide their rooms in the future as teenagers. Their bathroom is attached to their room and for private use only. Visitors have also an independent wc for their needs so all room unities stay undisturbed & private.

“Underground Museum Of Physical Discipline & body Incarceration In Paliouri Diminiou”, May 2007 Marquis De Sade’s scripts are full of some kind of incarceration rooms, be it small or large in proportions. The lead roles of his writing at some point they are locked in a cell either as a victim or as a victimizer. Some of the principles of the incarceration are revealed in Sade’s stones and at the same time exist in true prison institutions such as discipline, unceasing, vigilance, surveillance, constraint, compliance and submission to all set of rules, subjugation, enforcement and many more.

The underground museum incorporates some of the principles of prison and through the vast stretch, extension and perplexity of the site it states the meaning of a body under constraint, submission and compliance to a strict set of rules. The organ like contour and the pattern of the structure are defined by the figure of the bodies. The figure of the building is made up of a female body with a male body inside it, sharing only the gastrointestinal area. Through this dual quality of the same body an underground structure with many rooms, that sometimes communicate with each other and some other they lead to a complex maze like corridors, yet at the same time it gives a suffocating feeling. the space attains female and male characteristics. As female characteristics of space we can attribute spaciousness, snugness, warmth and passivity while the male characteristics are incommodity, activism, energy and non hospitality. This structure has one more special characteristic – the fluid, as moisture and humidity are associated with sexuality and sexual instincts. The human body itself is made up of enormous amounts of liquids, different organs, and multiple functions tightly linked together. The optional lighting/ illumination of the different rooms in the museum is giving a stronger sense of imprisonment and interiority. There is a tight link between surveillance, discipline and enforcement a fact that is reflected on the body, so it acts accordingly. The end result of an imprisonment is a new body, but its not our task to characterize it s better one or worse one. This new body has the marks of discipline carved on it, remnants of the space of its previous incarceration creation.

Carnal imprints, taken as outlines from Sade's gravures, are being transformed into 3D spatial features in the structure. Soft or harder wall dividers, elevations or narrow passages create the interior scenery of the ‘museum’.

Sections throughout the interior of the structure. The remaining of the deserted village of Paliouri, work as a protection complex, between the outside world and the underground mystical body’s transition. Long and deep “openings” on ground level, inside the remaining building shells, more like torture “skylights” help the supervision of the human objects inside. The victims more in agony, not knowing what is next, or who is watching them..

Architecture Design Studio IV : “small building complex with mixed uses in the city of Volos” – student amusement center - 2003

The building complex is built in a property with many trees. One of the main concerns, was to keep as many trees as possible, and build the rest of the complex around them. So the two older trees became part of the designing process and formed a great atrium, which signifies the ‘heart’ of the student’s amusement center. The skylights provide direct & clear sunlight and good ventilation system throughout the complex.
