YEARS OF ADVENTURE
- E S T 19 79 -
A H H S H U C K S , S OM EONE H A D A B I RTHDAY! Yep, this year, we turned 40. We know, right? Exploring really is the elixir of life. Which means it was 40 years ago since our flare-wearing forefathers, inspired by their own far-flung adventures, founded STA Travel with one mission: to create affordable adventures for awesome humans. Since then, we’ve grown from two backpackers into the world’s largest student and youth travel company, inspiring over 2 million travellers a year to discover the world. We’ve crossed borders to push boundaries, walked unfamiliar paths to find new friends, and got lost to discover the places we love. A lot may have changed over the years. (Google Maps has certainly helped, thank you Google + travel gods). But our philosophy never has. We’re still the only place to #StartTheAdventure. And now, with this brochure, it’s your turn.

EXPLORING, NOT EXPLOITING
WE’RE
Making a STAnd to help make a world of difference.
GLOBAL Trusted by travellers since 1979, we are the world's largest student and youth travel company. With over 350 stores worldwide, from Auckland to Aberdeen, we're never too far away.
ANIMAL WELFARE
We operate a comprehensive customer safety policy that not only keeps our travellers safe, but also helps to benefit the local suppliers we work with. If a property doesn’t meet our standards, we try and work with the owners so they can become compliant. This approach helps to raise the standards of health and safety globally, and boost their profitability locally.
WORK & VOLUNTEER
We don’t support any activity that hurts or humiliates animals, and encourage our travellers to do the same. We were one of the first travel companies to make a stand on animal welfare, auditing and withdrawing products that went against our pioneering policy, including an outright ban on elephant riding, ostrich riding, Thailand's Tiger Temple and Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls.
CUSTOMER SAFETY MATTERS
SPECIALISTS From working holidays to volunteer projects and language courses, we believe that travel has the power to expand minds, change thinking, and bring people and cultures closer together.
SUPPORTING TEEN CANCER CHARITIES
In Australia, three young people are diagnosed with cancer each day. We work with nine charities around the world with one mission in mind: to make sure no young person faces cancer alone. Our goal is to raise USD $1 million by 2020. You can help by adding $2 to your booking, 100% of which will go to CanTeen to help them provide crucial support services.
THE ORIGINAL
ROUND THE WORLD EXPERTS Experts in Round the World wizardry, we've worked with the world's leading and 5-star airlines for 40 years to create unique and flexible multi-stop routes that you won't find anywhere else.
We only sell vetted volunteer projects, and currently support 50 projects in almost 40 countries. Our volunteering charter is designed to ensure that we only work with projects that have proven to have a lasting and positive impact, meeting the needs of local communities through sustainability rather than dependency, as well as meeting the desires of travellers to make a genuine contribution.

THE PROJECT
We were one of the first travel companies to put an outright ban on all elephant riding activities, and this park highlights the importance of taking those steps. The founder, Lek Chailert, cares for elephants rescued from cruel tourism and logging practices, winning herself the enviable title of Hero of the Planet. Be like Lek. Set in a valley surrounded by forested mountains, this project offers a peaceful home for more than 30 neglected and previously abused elephants. Working at this highly-acclaimed conservation project, you’ll play an important role in caring for endangered Asian elephants. Volunteering activities may include preparing the food and feeding these majestic grey giants and assisting in the day-to-day maintenance of the park. Learn about how they choose their friends and interact, as well as educating yourself on the endemic problems elephants face today in Thailand. You’ll spend so much time working up close with them, you’ll eventually see them starting to recognise you - remember, elephants don’t forget!

Elephant Village THAIL AND
Work off the beaten track in a traditional elephant village in Surin province. By sharing their lives and working with visitors, mahouts (elephant carers) are able to better support their elephants and families, which means a greater quality of life for everyone involved. You’ll care for, feed and bathe these gentle giants as well as help the mahouts harvest crops. Spend some downtime kayaking on the local river, making paper out of elephant poo, and learning the nifty tricks of Thai cuisine. Family friendly option also available.

THE PROJECT
New Hope Cambodia is on mission to give children and youth from Siem Reap’s poorest communities free education; take up your supporting role in the classroom and help them complete their studies and inspire a love of learning. And, when you’re not busy teaching, Angkor Wat is right on your doorstep!
New Hope Cambodia School is a non-government organisation that offers free education to over 1,000 students daily. By also providing healthcare, support to families in crisis, and vocational training to those in need, it works to help break the cycle of poverty. We do not support orphanage volunteering of any kind, and we make sure any project has children’s wellbeing and development front and centre.
.
LIKE THAT? TRY THIS.. Free education can transform the lives of Siem Reap’s poorest children, and volunteers play a pivotal role in allowing teachers to carry out their jobs effectively. Project hours will vary from half to full days, where you may be required to assist in a variety of roles. Support Khmer teachers with English classes, help out with community development projects or lend a hand to school improvement activities. And with Angkor Wat only two kilometres away, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this archaeological site, known to be the best-preserved temple at Angkor, and recently-discovered to be just the tip of a very large complex buried under the forest floor.
TEACH ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TEFL) A TEFL certificate qualifies you to teach English in schools, private language institutes, local businesses and universities. Doing this short course before volunteering will equip you with new skills and ensure you get the most out of your experience. See page 65. 120+ hours, Fr $499

If you want to work with children and have a knack for storytelling, organising rounders tournaments or bashing out a few questionable tunes on the recorder, listen up. Run by the women of Masiphumelele, this day centre, like may others, was opened to care for children who moved into the community from rural areas or as refugees from other African countries. Volunteers are invaluable here, and often help to ease the burden that comes with the lack of resources.

Animals in need come to Shamwari’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre from all over the Eastern Cape. The ultimate goal is always to return all animals back to the wild, and they are given the best possible chance of getting back there thanks to an on-site team that includes a vet and a veterinary nurse.
Based at Madolos on a 25,000-hectare Big 5 (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo) reserve in the Eastern Cape, it’s little wonder that Shamwari was nominated in the World Travel Awards category for Africa’s Leading Conservation Company. As a volunteer, you’ll assist with animal tracking and monitoring, game count surveys, reserve rehabilitation, alien plant removal and eco education. THE PROJECT Located in the highlands of San Cristóbal, this programme is run by a local partner that works closely with the Galápagos National Park to replace invasive plant species with endemic ones, which are cared for and nurtured in the nursery before being taken to root in the wild.
One of the world’s most enticing and unique archipelagos, the Galápagos Islands have been pulling in the crowds ever since Charles Darwin started checking out the birds (finches) in 1835. Come face to face - sometimes literally - with wildlife, and get your fingers green as you help preserve the region’s natural integrity. Your gateway to the Galápagos is the Ecuadorian capital of Quito. Kick things off with a trip to the Equator, aptly known as the Middle of the World. The next day, catch a flight to the volcanic shores of San Cristóbal, where your project is based. A volunteer role here requires green fingers, as you’ll spend weekdays working with a conservation initiative to help protect the growth of native plants by removing foreign species from their habitats. After five days of physical work, spend a full day at leisure exploring the island’s unique species of flora and fauna, including marine iguanas, giant tortoises, colourful Sally Lightfoot crabs, blue-footed boobies and Galápagos fur seals. We highly recommend signing up to a snorkelling trip to one of the thriving offshore reefs.

THE PROJECT Fijians are known for their warm welcomes, and for their resilient and tight-knit communities. What better way to join in and give back than by pitching in at a local school? The children are so eager to learn about the world, and they love getting to know the classroom volunteers. Based in the sublime Yasawa Islands, take up your volunteering role at an under-resourced and understaffed local school. Encourage children aged 3-13 to develop their education, and help open up a brighter future for them. By providing support in lessons, workshops and extracurricular activities, as well as encouraging parents to appreciate that school is cool, you’ll inspire confidence and change within the community. In your free time, hang out with the other volunteers or take some well-deserved rest down by the beach, swim with manta rays in the wild (May-Oct), hop on a cruise to the nearby islands or take it easy with a book and a hammock. To get the most out of this project, we recommend you stay for at least two weeks.
Run by Yasawa Trust Foundation, the programme aims to support schools and teachers by assisting with classroom teaching (in English) based on the Fijian national curriculum through classwork, literacy games and educational activities.

Recent studies show that people with more than one language in their worldly pockets are smarter and more creative than their monoglot pals. Our language study partner, Linguista, offers more than 260 schools worldwide and monitors their study programmes in terms of quality, service, teaching and accommodation.
What can you expect? Lessons usually take up around 20 hours a week, plus a few more for homework (don’t complain, you can do it in the sun). Most schools are located close to the centre, so you can explore your new city while getting some lingo practice in. We hear pubs are a good place to start. And as most of our language students are independent travellers aged between 18 and 29, our bet is you’ll have plenty of people to practice with.
Which course? INTENSIVE: Ideal for beginners or those who want to improve their language skills significantly in a short period of time. Opt for a combination course for a mixture of class and one-to-one lessons. STANDARD: For people who want to brush up on their existing language skills or for beginners who want to fit in lessons
BOOK WITH US 24/7 BY PHONE AND LIVE CHAT
around the rest of their holiday, our standard courses offer the best for both. Whichever course you choose, you’ll get a certificate at the end to confirm your enrolment.
Where can you stay? SELF-CATERED APARTMENTS/ BOARDING HOUSES: Keep your independence and be the master of your own schedule. SHARED APARTMENTS: When you live with other students, you’re guaranteed a practice partner. Iron out your questionable grammar before unleashing it on to the city! HOST FAMILY: Possibly the best option in terms of putting what you learn into practice. Talking to them every day is practice in itself, and it’ll give your confidence a real boost.

These terms and conditions should be read subject to this proviso. AGENCY We are STA Travel Proprietary Limited (STA Travel). We supply travel and tourism related products and services. STA Travel’s role is to assist you to plan your travel arrangements, facilitate your bookings, and arrange payment and refunds as applicable. Many of the services which are arranged by STA, including transportation and accommodation services, are not themselves provided by STA Travel. Insofar as STA Travel does not itself supply the relevant product or service, and that product or service is supplied by a third party (Third-Party Supplier), then, to the extent permitted by law but not otherwise, STA Travel has no responsibility for products or services provided or not provided by any Third-Party Suppliers. We give and make no warranty or representation regarding the standard of any services or products supplied by Third-Party Suppliers and no person has authority to make any such representation or warranty on behalf of STA Travel. If for any reason, any Third-Party Supplier is unable to provide the products/services you purchased through STA Travel, your remedy lies against that Third-Party Supplier and not STA Travel (subject to any applicable legislation). YOUR AGREEMENT WITH US These general terms and conditions together with the relevant terms and conditions of the Third-Party Suppliers apply to any travel products/services you purchased through us. Once you pay for your booking (whether in full or in part): (a) you acknowledge and agree that you have read and understood these general terms and conditions; and any terms and conditions imposed by Third Party Suppliers, for whom we act as Agent (b) you enter into a legally binding contract to acquire the relevant travel or travel related products and/or services from the Third-Party Suppliers (c) if you are not at least eighteen years of age then your legal guardian must give consent to this contract on your behalf (d) if you make a booking on behalf of someone, you warrant that you have the authority to accept and do accept on behalf of that person to be bound by STA Travel’s general terms and conditions and the relevant Third-Party Supplier’s terms and conditions. DEPOSITS AND PAYMENT All prices shown are ‘from prices’ and we reserve the right to alter the prices of any of our products or services. Additional deposits for certain travel arrangements may also be required by Third Party Suppliers. Failure to make payment in full by the due date may result in the forfeiture of any deposit paid. Third-Party Suppliers may have additional terms and conditions applicable to deposits paid to them. We may at our discretion operate a low deposit scheme in respect of certain bookings. Under the low deposit scheme the price of your ticket will be guaranteed upon receipt of the deposit. Once the deposit is paid, any changes to your itinerary will incur change fees or loss of deposit. The low deposit
72
is non-transferable and is only available on new bookings and includes a non-refundable low deposit service fee. We will advise you of the date that full payment is required. If payment for your booking is made by credit or debit card, a credit or debit card fee is payable which will be advised at time of payment. No credit or debit card fees will be charged for payments made by BPAY. Please note that BPAY may take up to 3 business days to process, therefore you will need to allow sufficient time for payment to be cleared before the actual due date. STA Travel do not accept cash or cheques as a method of payment. Please note that even after full payment, the conditions of the contract between you and the Third-Party Suppliers may permit them to increase the cost of your arrangements. We will pass on any such increase to you. DOCUMENTATION Travel documentation will not be issued until full payment with cleared funds is received. It is your responsibility to ensure that all of the details on your travel documents are correct and to bring to our attention any errors or discrepancies as soon as possible but in any event within 72 hours after STA Travel provides you with your travel documents. STA Travel’s general practice is to send documents to our customers electronically whenever possible. We reserve the right to charge you an administration fee if we send you such documents in hard copy form, at your request. All travel documents are non-transferable. It is your responsibility to collect all paper travel documents prior to departure. Your travel documents are valuable and should be safeguarded as if they were cash. It is not always possible to replace travel documents in the case of loss, theft, damage etc CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES Your contract with your Third-Party Suppliers may allow suppliers to cancel or amend bookings. We will use best endeavours to ensure that you are promptly notified of any significant changes, but accept no liability for any changes or costs incurred which may result from Third-Party Supplier cancellations of or amendments to bookings. If we make an error in your booking, which gives rise to a need to significantly change your booking, we will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. Without derogating from any additional statutory rights you may have, you will have the choice of either accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us (we will refund any price difference if the alternative has a lower value), or cancelling your booked arrangements and receiving a full refund.

IMPORTANT NOTE- CHANGES BEYOND OUR CONTROL If you have booked a flight and we are alerted to a significant schedule change by your airline before you depart from Australia, we will contact you by email to advise you of this. Please ensure that you have given your contact email address to STA Travel and that you regularly check for messages before you leave. STA Travel has no control over airline schedule changes and, to the fullest extent permitted by law but not otherwise, accepts no liability for costs which may arise as a result of such changes. After you have left Australia, it is your responsibility to check with the airline that any onward flights you have confirmed are operating as booked. We strongly recommend that you contact your airline at least 72 hours before the scheduled departure of each flight to do this. Please note that for some airlines it is mandatory to confirm with them your intention to fly. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BOOKING If you wish to change your booking and such a change is permitted and possible, STA Travel will charge you a service fee to process the change with the exception of flight date changes with a valid MultiFLEX. You may also be charged a service fee by your Third Party Supplier. For changes after departure please see the ‘Contact Us’ section of www.statravel.com.au for details of how to request changes. Please note that all reservation changes are subject to availability and the terms and conditions of the product or service purchased. For changes before departure please contact your original booking store. The name in your booking must be exactly the same as your passport. Changes to name details are not allowed by many airlines and other service providers. Whilst we will do our best to make such a change if necessary, please bear in mind that most airlines and other service providers treat a name change as a cancellation, to which standard conditions and charges would apply.
Without derogating from any statutory rights you may have, we will pay compensation in respect of any significant changes that we make to your booking, using the scale below. These may include (but are not limited to) the following changes: a change in accommodation to that of a lower official category, a change of departure airport, a change of supplier, a change in the time of your departure or return flight by more than 12 hours.
Flights must be taken in the sequence they appear on your ticket or e-ticket confirmation. If you plan not to take a flight as booked, please contact the airline or your booking store as far in advance as possible to discuss your options. If you do not check in on time for a confirmed reservation, the airline may register you as a ‘no-show’, which could result in extra charges and/or your whole flight itinerary being cancelled and/or render your ticket void.
This standard payment will not affect your legal rights, including any applicable statutory rights. We will only make one payment for each full fare paying adult in the booking. Any children not paying the full adult fare will receive 50% of the listed amount. If the value of your booking is less than the compensation outlined, we will pay compensation only to the value of the booking.
If you cancel your booking, the cancellation terms and conditions of your Third Party Suppliers will apply as well as STA Travel cancellation fees outlined on your itinerary and receipt. We need to receive from you written notification of cancellation and your original ticket/voucher before we can process any

IF YOU CANCEL YOUR BOOKING
If the person paying for the booking (the paying customer) is different from the travelling customer, and the paying customer wishes to cancel or withdraw the funding of any booked tickets, STA Travel will notify the travelling customer of the paying customer’s funding withdrawal (if contact details have been provided to STA Travel) and give the travelling customer the option of continuing with the booking, subject to payment of the full cost of the travelling customer’s booked ticket by the travelling customer. If, following this notification, the travelling customer does not pay the full cost of his or her booked ticket, the booked ticket will be cancelled and the amount paid by the paying customer in relation to the booked ticket will be refunded to the paying customer (subject to the relevant STA Travel and supplier terms and conditions).
