You’ve heard of the Big Apple and the Windy City. And of course if someone refers to the City of Lights, you know they mean Paris.

But what about the Pink City? That name might be a little less familiar to you. No, it’s not a made up metropolis some fairy tale princess calls home. Believe it or not, it’s a real place—the beautiful Indian city called Jaipur.

In the 18th century, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II wanted a city built.

Named for one of the spirits that escaped Pandora’s ill-fated box, apatite could have been doomed by its troublesome past. But this Greek myth has a happy ending. Forgiven for its assoH. ciation with Pandora, apatite has become a darling of jewelry designers. So when we got our hands on these blue beauties, we couldn’t resist giving you something new and exciting. At the center of the ring, delicately prong set in goldvermeil sterling silver, a faceted oval of apatite shimmers and shines in icy blue, surrounded by a halo of twelve more brilliant blue apatite stunners. Business travel isn’t always easy. Especially when every other stop is a town without roads.

Working my way down the western coast of India, I opted for a pit stop. I headed to a Kerala spa, tucked inside the forest. It was perfect.

After a day of deep massage among the fields of coffee, cardamom and nutmeg, I was ready to talk gemstones. I met my friend at his shop in Ratnapura, the “City of Gems.” The look on his face said it all. He knew I had a weakness for rubies and he wasn’t above exploiting it.

We haggled some, but I knew better than to pass on a cache this sweet. Our designer transformed these enhanced stones—70 carats at a time—into our Ruby Teardrop Necklace, an impressive 18" strand of faceted ruby roundells.

Each shimmering red gem is linked with handtwisted, 14K gold layered wire and meets at a pendulous 10carat, faceted teardrop ruby. The matching French hook earrings each feature four faceted ruby roundels and an 8-carat ruby teardrop. High-end jewelers can sell some rubies for more than $5,000 a carat. We think that’s ridiculous in today’s economy.

How to get lost in London An old-fashioned walk in the park leads to an accidental discovery of world famous British blues!

Time to smell the roses It sounds odd, but I never have any spare time when I visit Geneva.

Between the business meetings, factory tours and more meetings, there’s barely time for me to breathe. If I want a break, I have to steal it. So during my last trip, I made a run for it after lunch. I turned off my cell phone. And then I went for a stroll along the lake to clear my head and forget about work.

But a stroll through the birthplace of the Swiss watch industry is a terrible place to try and forget about work. The cool breeze off Lake Geneva and the lush greenery of the Jardin Anglais (English Garden) were relaxing. But then I saw the Flower Clock. Planted in 1955, the working public clock has a breathtaking dial composed of more than 6,000 blooms, arranged in an elaborate design of eight concentric circles. Inspiration never sleeps.

When he talked about his mechanical creations, he got the wild-eyed look of a mad scientist. I was dying to find out what he was up to. Then one day he invited me downstairs.

A retired watchmaker, Walter built one-of-a-kind watches and clocks from spare parts and scrap metal. They were definitely unusual, but also undeniably beautiful. Our mutual love of machines made us fast friends. I was lucky enough to get one of Walter’s creations as a gift and to this day it’s still the most talked about object in my office.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a 107-foot bronze and iron giant that towered over the harbor like a ten-story trophy, warning future invaders that “Rhodes is tougher than you think.”

We finally mastered the art of “Black Magic”

During a recent stay in Tahiti, I watched veteran pearl divers at work. And I realized that growing a perfectly-shaped, perfectlysmooth giant pearl is still hit or miss.

That’s why, after years of searching, we found brilliant bioscientists who harvested the finest mother of pearl (or nacre) from some of the world’s most exceptional oysters. This costly material is then shaped, organically hand-coated and meticulously hand-polished into a spectacular sphere of iridescent color. The calm during the storm There was nothing special about the boat. And that made it perfect. I was looking for the deep sea fishing experience I’d never had before, to visit the ledges and wrecks where commercial charters rarely go. I got all that and more. The Captain looked the part. Scruffy beard. Cigarette dangling from his lips. And he certainly knew what he was doing. As we headed out, the sky turned black and the ocean churned. Other boats scrambled to get back in, but Hombre just kept pushing. When I suggested returning, all he said was, “It’ll pass.”

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any hotter in B. the heart of the Mexican jungle, it did. After a half-day of hiking, we found something burning deep in the rainforest. Our guide Carlos said it had been smoldering there since the days of the Mayans, and likely for a hundred centuries before that. The fire glowed orange and radiated an C. almost magical heat. When I asked Carlos if he thought it would burn forever, he just smiled.

“Eso depende de la mujer,” he said. That depends on the woman.

Ever since the first live nativity staged by Saint Francis of Assissi in 1223, the recreation of the birth of Jesus has been a labor of love for countless artists. Between 1600 and the late 18th century, some of Italy’s most talented sculptors crafted magnificent nativity crechés (French for “crib”) of unmatched detail and expression.

Today, those early religious treasures can be only be found in museums and private collections. But during our last trip to Europe we met a dedicated group of artisans who have kept the faith—and the handcrafted tradition—alive.

The Birth of Jesus Nativity Collection is based on an original from the Italian Renaissance. Take a closer look and you can see that the modern-day artisans have a deep respect for Old World technique.

Each cold-cast resin figurine is garbed in hand-dyed and shaped fabric, based on authentic Palestinian costumes of the period.

Incredibly life-like recreations of Mary and Joseph, the Magi and shepherds are painted by hand. Luxurious accents are added in lustrous gold leaf. Our search for the finest amber took us deep into Northern Europe, along the jagged coast that borders the Baltic Sea. Millions of years ago the same region was overrun by prehistoric forests and crowded with glaciers, resulting in some of the richest amber deposits in the world. ighty-eight years ago, a watchmaker in Europe famous for building clocks at Versailles created a legendary watch movement. He invented the first watch with an automatic mechanical drive.

These innovative movements required no batteries and never needed to be manually wound. Only seven of these ultra-rare watches were ever made and we’ve only actually seen one surviving masterpiece in a watch history museum.

Inspired by history, our Stauer Meisterzeit has been painstakingly handcrafted to meet the demanding standards of vintage watch collectors.
