didn’t mean to buy the watch. But it wasn’t exactly an accident either. My wife told to me to sit on my hands because she knows how I can get at these vintage watch auctions, but there was something about that beautiful blue face...I couldn’t help myself. It was one of the earliest examples of that particular watch design I’d ever seen. A classic military model straight out of the 1940s. And I felt lucky to win it at auction. It was described by the seller as “needing some TLC” and that couldn’t have been more true. I took it to my watch guy and he spent a few days with it, deconstructing it, researching the movement, cataloging the work that would have to be done to get it running again. He rolled his chair back from his work station, lifted the loupe from his eye and said, “I can restore it for you. But by the time I get done, it’ll basically be a brand new watch.” And it was right then that I decided to build the Stauer Exemplar Watch.

We kept the striking metallic blue dial because it was what had attracted me to the watch in the first place. But we added complications, making this timepiece a chronograph and creating a more balanced design. Between 4 and 5 o’clock we included a date window and made the hands luminescent so you can stay on schedule day or night. The stainless steel case gleams even brighter than the original did after polishing, and on the genuine leather band we added bold white stitching for contrast. But the biggest change we made was on the inside. It sounds odd, but I never have any spare time when I visit Geneva. Between the business meetings, factory tours and more meetings, there’s barely time for me to breathe. If I want a break, I have to steal it. So during my last trip, I made a run for it after lunch. I turned off my cell phone. And then I went for a stroll along the lake to clear my head and forget about work. But a stroll through the birthplace of the Swiss watch industry is a terrible place to try and forget about work. The cool breeze off Lake Geneva and the lush greenery of the Jardin Anglais (English Garden) were relaxing. Then I saw the Flower Clock. I was wide awake when I dreamed up the design for the Stauer Minuit. It was the middle of the night at the top of the world.
