Welcome to the St Austell Brewery Celtic Beer Festival 2015 Where does the time go? Is it really a year ago since we were all gathered here for the last Festival? It must be an age thing! Anyway it gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you all once again to this the 17th Beer Festival held here in our Cellars. Every year it never ceases to amaze me how long the queue is to get in even an hour before the doors are opened. No doubt today has been no different and as always we are very grateful for your support and the lengths you go to for making sure you get in! The popularity of the event is what drives us on to make the necessary logistical changes required to host it.
As usual your attendance today contributes valuable funds to our Brewery Charitable Trust and earlier this year we were proud to make a donation of £10,000 to Canine Partners and sponsor the training of a puppy which has appropriately been called ‘TRIBUTE’. Canine Partners is a wonderful charity that provides trained dogs to people with disabilities who need assistance to become more independent and enjoy a better quality of life. Their website www.caninepartners.org.uk is well worth a visit to see the great work they do. This year the Brewery has brewed and sold the staggering total of over 100,000 barrels. This is a remarkable achievement for everyone involved in the Company particularly when you consider that we were brewing 15,000 barrels in 1999. My biggest thanks go to you, our valued customers, because without your loyal support for our beers over the years our mission would have simply been impossible. So if nothing else let’s raise a glass (or two) today to that very special achievement. Cheers! Two recent site purchases that we have been proud to announce are The Chain Locker in Falmouth and Food for Thought on the Town Quay in Fowey. We plan to carry out major refurbishments at both sites. Back in March at the MA Publican Awards at the Grosvenor Hotel in London we won Best Tenanted Pub Company (up to 200 sites). To bring home this prestigious trophy has been a long held aspiration of ours and is a tribute to our dedicated and hard-working publicans and the Estate team which supports them. We arrived at the dinner in one of our London taxis that bedecked in our Tribute colours – a sight not easily missed!
Talking of our spectacular Tribute purple livery we have placed an order for a Tribute hot air balloon. Following our sponsorship of this year’s world renowned Bristol International Balloon Fiesta we enjoyed our balloon flight so much that we had to buy one! In June we were proud to rekindle our support of the Fisherman’s Friends when we hosted the launch of their CD ‘Proper Job’ at the Visitor Centre. We were treated to a very special and memorable concert and we wish them every success with it. Congratulations go to the Cornwall rugby team who won the prestigious Bill Beaumont Cup beating Lancashire at Twickenham. We have been proud to sponsor the team with Tribute and welcomed them to our stand at the Royal Cornwall Show to show off their hard earned trophy. As always I am very grateful to a number of our employees who have volunteered so generously to give up their time to set up the Festival and staff the bars so that more of the money we raise today goes to our Charitable Trust. Thank you to Roger and the brewing team for their spectacular collection of special ales that they have laid on for our enjoyment. Please enjoy yourselves responsibly at this very special occasion and I wish you a very Happy Christmas and prosperous 2016.
James Staughton, Managing Director
Welcome From James Staughton St Austell Brewery Managing Director
Welcome back to the Brewery cellars and the 17th Annual Celtic Beer Festival The cellars at St Austell Brewery will be thrown open today for the 17th time and I have had the privilege of attending all 17 festivals. Along with Estate Director Adam Luck I was instrumental in creating the concept of a celebration of beer in the Brewery cellars and have taken an active role in the organisation of this event over the years. More recently I have been able to withdraw a little and pass on the baton to a newer generation. However, one of the unique features of the festival is the range of special and one-off brews, and it is here that I maintain a keen interest. We have for many years operated a very small ‘micro’ brewery within our brewing operation that allowed us to innovate and develop new brews. Indeed, all our core brands started life on this plant – I still have the brewsheet for Brew No. 1 of Daylight Robbery, brewed on 23rd April 1999. This little brewery has been used by me and our team of brewers to provide the wide range of special brews that we offer at the festival. However, unless you attend the festival or a very small selection of local pubs, many in the greater beer drinking public never get the opportunity to try these beers. We have been told by our sales team that they could sell these beers five times over, if only the beer was available. So, we have risen to the challenge and installed a new ‘small batch’ brewery with a brewing capacity of ten barrels (the old one was two, and our main brew-house is one hundred and seventy five). In the spring we will be launching our Small Batch Beer Club, enabling member pubs to receive one off and special brews made on this equipment on a regular basis.
Welcome From Roger Ryman St Austell Brewery Head Brewer
Innovation is at the core of what we do at St Austell Brewery, and it is from the small acorns sown at the Celtic Festival that the majority of our core brands have grown. Indeed, the only beer in our regular range that remains on the bar since 1999 is HSD, a classic of its time first created in the early seventies. The November date was selected for the original festival as a quieter time in the Brewery. Back then in the autumn we would brew two or three times a week, leaving plenty of time for the brewing team to organise the festival. These days we may brew up to twenty times per week, and quiet times of the year are a distant memory! Production output from the Brewery has risen from 15,000 barrels per year in 1999 to an estimated 110,000 barrels per year by the end of 2015. With 288 pints in every barrel that works out to a pint of St Austell beer being sold every second, 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year! That phenomenal growth has been fuelled by Tribute, which started life with such humble beginnings 17 years ago, but has been supported by Proper Job, and latterly our move into the lager market with Korev. In those days ‘export’ was sending a dray lorry over the Tamar; these days St Austell beer is enjoyed in 27 countries from Penzance to Perth! Aside from the special brews, the festival also offers us the opportunity to introduce you to new beers in our stable of core brands. This year we are headlining with our new stout, Mena Dhu. Mena Dhu is not entirely new however, with the recipe based on 1913 Stout brewed two years ago which was itself developed from the records of an original brewing journal for Walter Hicks & Co (the name of the Brewery up until 1934, when it was renamed St Austell Brewery). Lower Mena Dhu was the name of Walter Hick’s farm at Luxulyan that he mortgaged to raise £1,500 capital (£183,000 in today’s money) which he used to establish his company. Mena Dhu translates from Cornish as ‘Black Hill’, which somehow seems appropriate for this dark, creamy and tasty beer.
2015 has seen continued investment in the Brewery to increase capacity. Particular growth has been seen in our keg beers, so a new kegging line has been installed to fill the kegs of Korev and Mena Dhu. Bottled beer sales have increased by 40% since this time last year with in excess of 10 million bottles filled and we have taken on an extra shift in the bottling hall, creating employment within the local economy. Further expansion is planned for 2016 and beyond.
BREWING & BRAND VALUES Crafted In Cornwall - Always
We have not forgotten the original Celtic concept that stimulated the first festival. Last year we hosted a Celtic Collaboration brew when we invited brewers from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Brittany to St Austell to make a special beer. This year the spirit of the Celtic Collaboration has been maintained, with our friends at Brecon Brewing hosting the same group of brewers. Brewer Grant Coles travelled to the mountains of Wales to help create a special beer which is on sale today. No doubt next year we will continue our travels making beer across the Celtic world. I very much hope that you enjoy the festival and the beers that we have created for you. Please enjoy our beer responsibly, respect our neighbours when you leave and ensure that you and your friends all arrive home safely.

Since its inception in 2003, the charitable trust has raised over £500,000 for charities, good causes and individuals in need in our communities. here are just a few recent thank yous we have received... “Motability is hugely grateful for the donation, which was used to purchase a complex vehicle adaptation for a Motability Scheme customer. Donations like these greatly improve the quality of life of disabled people, providing them with the means to visit family, attend essential medical appointments and go shopping; things that many take for granted.” Motability in Barnstaple (www.motability.co.uk)
Every penny of profit from the Beer Festival goes back to the community, so thank you for coming, thank you for your continued support and thank you for helping us to help others. If you would like to nominate a good cause or charity, or would like further information about the Trust, please contact us at St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, 63 Trevarthian Road, St Austell, PL25 4BY or on trust@staustellbrewery.co.uk.
“We were thrilled to hear from the Brewery that they were happy to donate £2700, allowing us to purchase essential radar equipment. It really does bring us right up to date technology-wise and means we can provide a far more effective, wider watch over those enjoying the waters around our part of the coastline and help to ensure their safety.” National Coastwatch Unit St Agnes Head (www.nci.org.uk)
In its 16 year history the Celtic Beer Festival has raised over £125,000 for the Charitable Trust.
