Inhabiting Zero Wasted Space Master Thesis
Winy Maas + Ulf Hackauf +Adrian Ravon The Why Factory, TUDelft, Netherlands *High Commendation
Description: Individual Project Taking the human body as a starting point, the project develops a series of tools with which to investigate the minimum habitable space that a human can occupy. The first tool, a mapping device, tracks and logs human occupation of space during different moments of the day and generates the Zero Wasted Space model. This provides us with valuable information we can access, about the way we inhabit space. The Second tool, the interface, allows the human to interact with the information carried down, adding comfort and livability to the model of Zero Wasted Space. This provides us with a new model of ergonomic living; one that has arisen in the first place by our patterns of movement in space, and one that has become inhabitable by our interaction

Sanatorium Zonnestraal An investigation in the adaptation of the Dresselhuys pavilion into a modern hospital ward Bas Gremmen Building Technology Exploration TUDelft, Netherlands
Description: Individual Project This re-design attempts to transform Duikers pavilion into a passive solar hospital ward. An Important criterion of health care design, the comfort of the patient was integral in the approach. The design of the southern faรงade aims at scaling down advanced technology such as nitrogen injected ETFE cushions to the human scale, such that the patient plays an integral role in the functioning of the faรงade. In this way, the patient is in control of his own comfort, and ultimately his own health; an important criteria in the healing process. This was also introduced in the separation of the patient rooms into individual climate zones, where each patient is in control of his/her air inlet, while the hospital is in control of the collective air output when it comes to cross ventilation in the summer months.
Nitrogen injected ETFE cushions become less transparent with temperature rise. This means no additional shading elements are needed. This allows for unobstructed view when facade is closed.

An Urban Experiment Bachelor Thesis
John Sampson University of Sheffield, UK *Building Prize for final year work
Description: Individual Project As a reaction to increasing prices within the Northern Quarter of Manchester and the overpowering of large retail stores, this project aims to create a centre for nomadic artists who require an affordable workspace. An architectural system has been designed; a structural grid with service cores and sustainable modules. Each artists can buy a module and sell it on when they have finished. The modular growth of the facility is based on the artisans’ personal requirements for light, space and acoustics. Unpredictable urban relatioships will be formed. Could a global network of these facilities emerge to provide the nomadic artist with an affordable temporary address within different Urban Experiments?

A Market for Ecclesall Road Bachelor 3 project
Andrew Budd Univeristy of Sheffield, UK
Description: Individual Project The aim of this proposal is to provide a much needed local food market to a prime gastronomic region in Sheffield. The market at basement level accomodates for meat, fish and dairy products. The structure from this rigid and organised basement level is carried through to ground level, forming a new streetscape on the site_filling an existing urban gap with a new streetscape. Within this streetscape lies a fluid and flexible street market. A cooking workshop sits within the market. This utilizes the different market layers, and allows local chefs to promote their flavours to the public.

Description: Commission MAKS integrates the generic character of the industrial environment in which it is placed with the building’s specific visibility to and from the city centre. It is precisely this interplay between the neutrality of the black boxes, whose space can be adapted to host any event or performance, and the (pro)scenic attractiveness of the location, where each event in the Centre becomes an event for the city. The width of MAKS´s raised platform extending over the riverfront becomes an identifying feature of the entire city, its landmark. While the Grand Foyer unfolds under this raised platform, above it, the Garden occupies what is essentially the roof of MAKS, the great city belvedere. Inside the platform, the Salon, Maribor’s big urban living room is created.

Description: Invited Competition Window to the park is comprised of two interlocking elements. the ‘residential ribbon’ and the ‘mixed use carrier. The massing of the residential ribbon is a result of the application of environmental parameters such as solar and light gain, prevailing winds, views and privacy. The ribbon is divided into clusters of housing defined by access cores. Each cluster has a mix of apartment typologies: Terrace apartments; double-sided apartments; standard apartments; studios; penthouse; duplex. The carrier is a large slab element at the base of the complex, which is occupied by a rich mix of public program. Its toof acts as a public plaza to the north and a residential courtyard to the south; light wells penetrate the carrier and allow light to the retail at ground level.

Description: Open Competition Greek festivals involve a temporary transformation of an existing public space, achieved through the use of signs of festivity; hanging flags; music; color. Their character is that of an ideal public event - a Dionysian gathering. This project presents a re-enactment of this street transformation, with the hope of changing the outdated symbolism of this tower, to a timeless symbol of festivity. This is achieved with the creation of a Greek veranda; a space between two skins screened from extreme weather conditions. Varying environmental parameters effect the treatment of the exterior skin, which acts as a microclimatic filter.

Art Athens Pavilion Athens, Greece
Design team: - Giannis Douridas, Dipl RIBA 2, MA (AA) (Principle) - Stavros Gargaretas, M.Eng
Description: Commission The pavilion recognizes its unique setting on the Beach of Ellinikon, and takes the visitors through a cathartic journey. The journey begins inside the Batminton stadium, in which the Art Athina exhibition takes place and out towards the mesmerizing view of the sea. This flow towards the view of the horizon, is reflected in the materiality of the pavilion. this manifests in a continuous flow of ropes which begins in the entrance of the pavilion from inside the exhibition and finishes on the terrace together with the journey through the space. The rope undulates, forming spaces of high and low pressure, controlling in this way, the way that the visitors are guided through the space.

WRC Rally Acropolis, Trophy Design Athens, Greece
Design team: - Giannis Douridas, Dipl RIBA 2, MA (AA) (Principle) - Stavros Gargaretas, M.Eng - Jason Spiliotakos, Dipl RIBA 2
Description: Commission The trophy of any race is a reward that symbolizes victory. A memento that attempts to freeze and immortalize a great personal achievement. The design of this years Rally Acropolis trophy tries to capture this very moment of victory as well as the route that this international competition has taken throughout its history and in the Greek Landscape. Its strict geometry is directly associated with the ancient historic commemorative stones which narrate important battles and events. Its material, the white marble of Dionysos, is the same marble used in the monuments of the Acropolis. Its wooden detail from the Greek olive tree functions to depict and imitate the Greek landscape and define Greek tradition. The piece of marble varies in thickness, exposing its monolithic nature and revealing its transparency as it gets thinner. The wood of the olive tree flows into the surface and geometry of the marble while simultaneously provides a contrast with the whiteness the marble reflects.
