St. Thomas the Apostle School

2015 Annual Report of Giving

November, 2015 Dear Friends of St. Thomas the Apostle School, As we begin the Advent Season, I am filled with gratitude for the success and strength of our beloved school.

Our Mission St. Thomas the Apostle School is an elementary school community of many faiths, cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds committed to educational excellence in the Roman Catholic tradition. We recognize parents and guardians as the primary educators of their children. With this in mind we offer them the opportunity to participate in various aspects of school life. Together we encourage personal responsibility and respect for others as we guide children to become independent members of a global society. As a school committed to the development of the whole child, we are dedicated to helping children realize their fullest potential as independent learners and critical thinkers. Each grade level has age-appropriate, traditional and innovative programs that incorporate a variety of talents and abilities while fostering spiritual and moral growth.

I have been blessed to be a witness to this growth through our faculty and students over the past 23 years. Together they have built a climate of learning through enthusiasm for teaching and a love of discovery. As I accept the honor of being named the Archdiocesan Administrator of the 2015- 2016 school year, I am most humbled by the dedication of our teachers. They translate our mission into action each and every day through their commitment and creativity. Our success and strength is also due, in large part, to the contributions of our extended school family. You help us meet our challenges while maintaining our mission, making us stronger than ever: scholastically, spiritually and through service to others. Last year, the STA community came together to raise funds and complete the first phase of construction on the Restoration of These Old Brick Walls. With our building now stronger than ever, we can build on the scholastic success inside these old brick walls, share the gift of spirituality rooted in these old brick walls, and instill in our students the joy of service to others beyond these old brick walls. So, as we enter this season of giving, I thank you for choosing to make St. Thomas the Apostle School a charitable priority in your life. As the current stewards of this very special place, we both need and appreciate your support. Wishing you a blessed Advent Season, a Merry Christmas and a peace-filled New Year!

Colleen Whitty DiSanto Principal

Restoration of

THESE OLD BRICK WALLS

In August 2014, St. Thomas the Apostle put out a call for help. We needed to restore the masonry of our building, which sustained considerable damage from the drainage issues of our old roof. Without hesitation, our school family answered the call. The parent community raised $24,000 through a fundraising event held in September. A grant of $50,000 was generously awared to the school by The Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation. Many other individual

and corporate friends contributed to help us raise a total of $122,841 for the first phase. Construction began in earnest in July. CFM Construction restored and, in some cases, replaced the bricks and steel lintels on the building. Existing vertical joints were removed and replaced and existing holes in the brick and mortar were filled with soft calk to reduce the possibility of future freeze / thaw damage and cracking. Finally, the brickfront and all the windows were power washed.

Amazingly, all the work on this first phase of construction was completed in time for the first day of school on August 28th. A wonderful complement to the masonry restoration is the school’s new sign, which was a gift from the Class of 2015. Its design is consistent with the architectural period of both the school and the church. How wonderful to see our students and their families gathering for their ‘first day of school’ photo in front of this beautiful addition to our building!

Phase II of the masonry restoration will be integrated into the parish’s efforts to upgrade the entire campus. The parish is working in cooperation with the school board’s building committee to set goals and timelines. Scholastic Success

WITHIN THESE OLD BRICK WALLS

Scholastic achievement at St. Thomas the Apostle School has always been strong. Throughout the last 78 years, teachers and administrators have provided a solid foundation for each student that emphasizes the basics while also reflecting the changing world outside these old brick walls. Over the last decade, technology has made a significant impact. Every area of the curriculum has benefited from this teaching tool. However,

teachers also reach for time-tested tools such as manipulatives and, yes, pencil and paper, to instruct students in various subjects. The personal goal for each student, regardless of their abilities upon arrival at STA, is a full year’s worth of growth in all subject areas every year. For example, if a student enters third grade reading at a fourth grade level, as many do, their personal goal for the year is to read at a fifth grade level by the end of the year. In 2015, 96% of fifth grade

students achieved the personal goal of at least a year’s worth of growth in each subject area every year, and 91% of them achieved above grade level status before graduation. Such demonstrated success is impressive, but the secret is simple: Our teachers take the time to truly get to know each of their students, their learning styles and needs. Teachers combine large group instruction with daily small group lessons that allow for differentiated and cross curricular learning.

Through this process, teachers can observe and respond to the progress of each student. Students are also encouraged to assume a level of personal accountability. With cooperation and consistency at home, students become increasingly independent and thoughtful in their approach to learning. As a result, students become fully engaged in the educational process and also come to undertand that learning is a life-long pursuit to be embraced.

Spirituality ROOTED IN THESE OLD BRICK WALLS

Service to Others

BEYOND THESE OLD BRICK WALLS

Sharing our faith through service to others is a common thread woven into every area of the educational experience at St. Thomas the Apostle. It begins with the study of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care of God’s Creation. Teachers guide students to reflect on

these themes as they pursue all subject areas. For instance, during novel studies students are asked to evaluate decisions made by characters in the book and determine whether they reflect themes such as showing Solidarity with others. In science class, students learn about the Earth’s fragile eco-systems, and discuss the need to Care for God’s Creation. Students quickly make connections between these themes and the personal choices they make in their daily lives. With a little direction and lots of creativity, they discover how they can positively impact the

world around them in little and big ways. Upper school students enjoy sharing a book with younger students who are just learning to read because it’s an opportunity to call to Family, Community and Participation. For the younger student, the approach might be to create cards and drawings that are sent to retired members of the armed services or residents of St. Mary Home. Annual coat drives and monthly food drives benefiting those in need throughout the Hartford area empower students to give Option to the Poor and Vulnerable. Weekly recycling of shredded

paper and food scraps from the cafeteria contributes to the compost bin in our organic garden, demonstrating our commitment to Care for God’s Creation. The ongoing support and pen pal communication with our friends in Masooli, Uganda allows students to experience a sense of Solidarity with children their own age living across the globe. Under the guidance of their teachers, our students will be ready to live out the Catholic traditions of social justice and care for our world when they leave these old brick walls.
