Can You Drink the Cup? Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." Matthew 20:20-23
Lenten Lunch Program Join us at lunch time on Wednesdays during Lent for a study program inspired by this passage from Matthew’s Gospel along with “Can You Drink the Cup,” a book written by Henri J.M. Nouwen. We will focus our study on dealing with the everyday obstacles to faith -- the joys and the sorrows.

New Bishop Suffragan
The Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson The Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson was chosen Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas during the 113th annual Diocesan Council. She is the first woman to be elected bishop in the Diocese of West Texas. Brooke-Davidson, age 56, is currently the Vicar of Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Buda, Texas. Now as the sixth Bishop Suffragan of the diocese, she will serve alongside the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. David M. Reed.
Friends Benevolence Fund The Friends Benevolence Fund was created in December of 2012 to give temporary assistance to individuals who are going through a financial crisis. It is different from the Church’s Outreach Fund and Father Jeff’s Discretionary Fund in that it is used to help St. Barnabites, members and attendees, while the other two funds are used primarily to help people and groups outside the church. The Friends Fund assists church members with basic needs such as food, lodging, transportation and medical care during a time when these expenses have proven to be beyond the means of the person and his or her family. Since the establishment of the Friends Benevolence Fund, nine individuals have been helped with a total of $6615.00 being disbursed. The Friends Fund is funded by St. Barnabas parishioners who want to assist fellow St. Barnabites in a time of need. If you would like to support this ministry during Lent, please make out a check to St. Barnabas with “Friends Benevolence Fund” on the memo line and place it in the offering plate on Sunday or turn it in to the church office. If you or someone you know at St. Barnabas finds themselves in need of help, please contact one of the Friends Fund Trustees who are Steve Neale, Cheri Snyder, and Debbie Agnew. They will be happy to provide the very simple confidential application and a prompt

St. Barnabas Completes Its World Mission Project On World Mission Day, Sunday, February 26, the dolls, little dresses, britches and sanitary pads that the St. Barnabas sewing group made were placed on the altar and blessed by Fr. Jeff. The items were then taken to the Bishop Jones Center. They will be given to missioners who will give them out as they visit our different missions. Many thanks to Pat Sadd and Lola Roseberry for organizing this project and to all who have been sewing and who donated material and yarn.
A New Lenten Observance For people who are passionate about taking their faith, but not themselves, too seriously. What do George Herbert, C.S. Lewis, Mary Magdalene, Francis Perkins, Charles Wesley, Francis of Assisi, and Dietrich Bonheoffer all have in common? We will find out in greater detail during the season of Lent which begins on March 1, 2017. The short answer now is that each person above is a saint who has defeated 63 other saints to win Lenten Madness during the last seven years. An Episcopal priest had an idea for increasing our awareness of the various saints recognized by the Episcopal Church. He thought if we had a tournament much like the NCAA March Madness Basketball Tournament, people could learn a tremendous amount of information about saints. The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly Sixteen; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. The first round consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch. Will it be Augustine of Hippo, George Frideric Handel, Joan of Arc, John Wycliffe, Martin Luther or Florence Nightingale? This year’s 32 contenders have been identified and you’ll have a chance to learn about and vote for your favorites. Each week those with the most votes will advance to the next round until, in the final round, the Golden Halo is awarded to the most popular saint of Lent 2017. Lent Madness is an offering of Forward Movement that produces the Forward Day by Day booklets. It’s a fun way to learn more about our saints!
