Jimmy’s brochure, “Understanding the Liturgy in the Episcopal Church” was briefly discussed. Jimmy still wants Bur to read it and give advice on how to use and implement it.

New Business

Jimmy gave an update on his ordination process and stated that the Bishop announced that he is officially in the ordination process. Johnny Gorden moved that Vestry recommend and support Jimmy Davis in his pursuit of ordination. John seconds the motion. All voted in favor. Jimmy said that they may want to meet or talk to a member of Vestry. Vickie and Jeff offered to help with that, both will be working closely with Jimmy to find out who will contact Vestry and what to expect. Jeff asked that we pray for Jimmy as he goes through this process and explained that people feel very vulnerable going through this, that there are lots of personal questions asked.

Pris is ill and not in attendance but asked that we put something in Encourager about the remembrances book. We need the help of parishioners in our effort to put names in the book of people who have given objects/physical gifts to the church. Nancy Grimes is going to do the writing of the names in the book.

Jack presented plans and cost for the addition to the columbarium, as proposed by the Columbarium Expansion Committee. Discussion ensued about need for addition, cost, work that has been done so far by the Columbarium Expansion Committee. Johnny Gorden helped explain that the Columbarium Committee has its own members and money, takes care of cremation, services, bookkeeping, paperwork. He also said that the Columbarium Cmte was not in favor of the expansion as presented. He stated if this is the end result, he regrets that he ever brought it up to Vestry; however he understands it requires a vote to pass, and he will let the matter rest. The Columbarium Cmte appreciates the consensus with the Columbarium Expansion Committee to not remove the pointed rock top on the surrounding wall of the columbarium. Jimmy Davis moved to accept the recommendation for expansion for a total of $42,000 and to begin work. Fred seconded the motion. Johnny Gorden abstained from vote. All others voted in favor of the motion. Jack estimated that it would take 10-12 weeks to complete the expansion project. In early June they should start the foundation work, then late June they will install the new niches. STANDING AGENDA

Rector Report Youth Program. Jeff’s report was a discussion of the youth program. He first asked how we know we have a youth program. The general answer was because of Taco Sunday or when we see youth as acolytes, in children’s chapel or photos in the Encourager. One challenge our church faces is that with multiple services, there is segregation. How can we integrate better? How can we augment youth programs? Part of Bur’s passion is bringing new members into the life of the church, but he also wants to deepen our experiences with God and this includes people of all ages.

Jeff explained that one of the first things Bur is going to do is profile our membership and take a look at the community from a stance of how each person is a part of it, what they contribute, who they are. (Jeff also mentioned that we are in the process of updating our directory.) Bur is good at incorporating church activities into the worship service and showing the life of the church through worship. One of Bur’s ideas is to define the life of a child in the church, starting with birth, baptism, first communion, children’s chapel, Encouragers, Confirmation, summer camp, mission trips and map out the life of a child in the church. We also want to support Scouts at the church, VBS, Christmas Pageant, Youth Sunday — all of these activities support youth in the life of the church.

Jeff has created a steering committee with Bur, Julie and others to create a more programmed calendar for youth and find more opportunities to incorporate youth activities into the life of the church. Jeff is really excited about Bur’s desire and natural ability to help people feel that they belong at St. Barnabas. Frances asked if we should plan something to welcome Bur and his family. It was decided that May 1 we hold one worship service at 10AM and a light lunch in the Parish Hall afterwards. All are welcome to bring a dessert to share if they wish. This will be a great opportunity to meet and welcome Bur and his family (Melissa, Elizabeth (9) and Dylan (7)). Julie will talk to Marilee about what the youth can do that day to help. Vickie will write an article in Encourager; Jeff will take care of article in the paper and an ad announcing Bur joining the staff at St. B.

Julie asked if we would ever hire a staff person to oversee youth activities. Jeff responded that we would be interested in that, we simply need to start planning for it in the budget and allocate money toward it. Some discussion ensued about how much money would need to be put aside. It was agreed that though Marilee does a wonderful job with our youth, we need a champion for our youth program.

It was decided that Bur will contact Julie and begin talking about youth program needs specifically. Elizabeth Loggie would be a good parent to pull in. A parish-wide needs survey would be a good start too. David mentioned that his water ministry would be a good opportunity for youth ministry work in the future. ANY OTHER BUSINESS

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS/ RECOMMENDATIONS Jimmy Davis will collect offerings April 3, then France Money will take over for the rest of the Sundays (April 10, 17, 24).
