HEADMASTERS’ INTRODUCTIONS

Dear Parents,

While the weather may not have been particularly cheerful this term, this greyness has been more than compensated for by the brightness of St Benedict’s students’ achievements! As ever, we have seen the twin aims of participation and excellence being demonstrated across an incredibly wide range of academic and co-curricular pursuits.

It’s brilliant to see that when the public examination season begins, this school doesn’t “down tools” with its enrichment programme: in fact, if anything it seems to ramp up! It’s been truly wonderful to see so many of our students wholly expressing themselves across such a broad range of pursuits, challenging themselves and growing as young people as a result. This is what education is, in its fullest sense!

As we approach the end of the academic year, I hope you have a wonderful summer, and that the sun continues to shine!

Dear Parents,

The Trinity term has been highly enjoyable, with many highlights for the girls and boys to reminisce about in the latest edition of St Benedict’s News. The late spring and summer weather may have been variable, to say the least, but the children have participated energetically in their school activities. The sense of excitement at the school gate was palpable as the children arrived in their costumes for Citizenship Day, and we were blessed with visits by outstanding guest speakers who covered a number of interesting topics, including Law, Medicine, the Police Service, Scientific Research, and the work of the RNLI.

The musical life of the school is as vibrant as ever. The respective summer music concerts and the Musical Festival gave children across the Junior School the chance to share their love of music, and I am always so impressed by the standard of the musicianship. Sport has flourished despite the inconsistent weather, with plenty of opportunity for the older children to engage in athletics, cricket, and tennis. The Sports Days were also great fun.

The annual residential trips (PGL for Upper Prep; Cadiz for Form 1; and Outward Bound for Form 2) were a tremendous success. Each of the trips encourages the children to learn more about themselves and their peers, and most importantly the activities remind the children that they are capable of more than they initially think. The Form 2 production of Mary Poppins JR was outstanding and was a lovely way for the Form 2 children to end the year, as their primary school education comes to a close.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support. The SPF organised a splendid Summer Festival, which was enjoyed by everyone who attended, and it is always such a wonderful means of bringing our school community together.

I wish you a peaceful and relaxing summer.

With best wishes,

ST BENEDICT’S LECTURE SERIES

The Art and Faith of George Mackay Brown

In April, we were delighted to welcome Maggie Fergusson, awardwinning biographer, to St Benedict’s to talk about the fascinating life, art and faith of Orkney poet, George Mackay Brown; one of the great Catholic writers of the twentieth century.

During this inaugural literary Lecture Series talk, ‘Blessings May Break From Stone: The Art and Faith of George Mackay Brown’, Ms Fergusson took us on a captivating journey exploring a life both blessed and broken, where we discovered how George Mackay Brown, despite rarely leaving his native Orkney, led a vivid and courageous life.

Using images of the Orkney town of Stromness, Ms Fergusson engaged the audience, recounting how the island was a mediator for his imagination and offered glimpses into some of the many facets of his personality through his many letters and conversations with his wide acquaintance.

As his friend, Maggie Fergusson is the only biographer to whom George Mackay Brown reluctantly gave his blessing, allowing her to convey a candid portrayal of his life.

Speaking of her visit to the school, Ms Fergusson stated:

“It was a delight to visit St Benedict’s last week, and to be welcomed so warmly into what felt like a really happy, flourishing school. And though Orkney is some 700 miles north of London, I felt that the pupils made a real effort to travel to the islands in their imaginations, and to meet their poet, George Mackay Brown.”

Several of our Lower Sixth students attending the talk commented:

“Maggie spoke in such a compelling and engaging way; instantly I was drawn into the magic of Orkney, and now I’m desperate to visit!” Alice M

“The poetry read out to the backdrop of images of Orkney was incredibly immersive and beautiful, completely captivating me: a sensory experience.” Charlotte G

“I was captivated by the way Maggie was able to express the persona and life of George. Understanding that he was battling depression whilst acting as a rock for those around him whilst maintaining courtesy also showed the impact and uniqueness he held.” Bel D

“Maggie’s engaging tone whilst describing George’s life was truly mesmerising. Despite George’s battle with depression, he continued to express his love for poetry, which was inspirational, especially hearing the poem he wrote for those mourning parents who lost their son to suicide.”

Blu S

The audience, comprising pupils, parents and staff, left the talk inspired to read both Ms Fergusson’s award-winning biography as well as George Mackay Brown’s work.

Maggie Fergusson is the Deputy Editor and Literary Editor of The Tablet. Her biography of George Mackay Brown won the Marsh Biography Prize, the Saltire First Book Prize and the Scottish Arts Council Prize, and was the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year in 2006.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SUMMER CONCERTS

Over two weeks in June, we held our annual Lower Prep, Upper Prep, Pre-Prep 2 and Pre-Prep 3 Summer Concerts where parents, friends and family were treated to a showcase of magical music performances from our talented Junior School students.

“The Lower Prep pupils have been practising extremely hard this year on the Dood! (a small version of a clarinet but slightly easier to hold but not necessarily easier to play.) They have all progressed amazingly well since September and their hard work has culminated in their wonderful performances during their concert.

I am immensely proud of all our Junior School pupils throughout their marathon concerts. Such are their talents that there were so many solos to be performed and it was fantastic to see so many instruments being played. These included piano, trumpet, trombone, violin, drums, guitar and recorder as well as some powerful vocal solos. The children also sang songs related to their creative curriculum topics – there truly is a plethora of musical talent in our Junior School and a true testament to their hard work.”

Fourth Plinth School Awards

Congratulations to Arun (U4) on being named winner for Ealing in the 2024 Fourth Plinth Awards. The Fourth Plinth Schools Awards is a brilliant resource for schools to help pupils think about the role of public and site-specific artwork and they receive a huge number of entries, each year.

Arun was invited to attend a ceremony at City Hall to celebrate his achievement and creativity. All winning entries were exhibited and awards were presented by renowned artist, Rankin.

“We were delighted that Arun’s sculpture was chosen by Rankin as the winner for the Borough of Ealing. Arun’s piece was influenced by studying how Barbara Hepworth uses organic and geometric shapes in some of her sculptures, and he worked well to develop elements of contrast and tension in his piece.” Ms Linton, Art Teacher

PRIZE GIVING

UPPER SIXTH & UPPER FIFTH

The St Benedict’s Prize Giving ceremony for the Upper Sixth and Upper Fifth students was held on Tuesday 30 April in Ealing Abbey. The Guest of Honour was James Shone, a former Headmaster, educational speaker and founder of mental health charity; ‘I Can & I Am’.

The evening was filled with inspiration, as we honoured our students’ dedication and hard work, from academic excellence to outstanding sportsmanship.

of educating the whole person. By encouraging a focus on resilience, kindness and respect, these all contribute hugely to developing a remarkable character in our pupils.

Addressing those in their final year at the school, Mr Smith said, “Thank you and good luck – I hope you will remember St Benedict’s fondly. We are proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing you excel in the future.”

James Shone spoke about his remarkable and inspirational journey following a brain tumour diagnosis in 2012. He recounted how this gave him a determination to turn this setback into a springboard to inspire confidence in young people by responding positively to the challenges they may face.“ Best of luck to all those in Upper Fifth and Upper Sixth for the coming weeks and keep those balloons of self-belief inflated!”

Chair of Governors, Mary Edis, praised the recent successes of the pupils and the school following the impressive results from the recent ISI inspection. “The results of the report are testament to the outstanding hard work of our dedicated and talented teaching staff and the school’s leadership team and support staff.”

Echoing Mrs Edis’ words, our Headmaster also summarised the many successes of the school, not just in the academic sense, but also in its success in recognising the importance

PRIZE GIVING

LOWER SIXTH, LOWER FIFTH & MIDDLE SCHOOL

The St Benedict’s Lower Sixth, Lower Fifth and Middle School Prize Giving ceremony on 26 June was an incredible evening celebrating the brilliant achievements of our students throughout the year.

We were delighted to welcome Guest of Honour, Dr Sarah Ruggins, endurance athlete and Head of Investment Specialists for wealth management firm St James’s Place, to present the awards.

The proceedings began with Chair of Governors, Mary Edis, praising the students and teaching staff for all their hard work, determination and respect for each other. She also thanked the parents for their continued support for the school and all the students for their wonderful achievements.

In his address, Headmaster, Joe Smith highlighted the many outstanding achievements from the past academic year. He continued to praise the motivation of the students driven by “excellent teachers who consistently go the extra mile to support them.” Describing his first impressions when joining St Benedict’s, he concluded, “The biggest surprise for me in joining St Benedict’s has been the wonderful sense of community. Schools are about people, and St Benedict’s has wonderful people. Congratulations to our students for all their fine achievements this year and thank you, parents, for your continued support for the school.”

Dr Sarah Ruggins shared her story about overcoming adversity, when as a young talented athlete, her Olympic dream was tragically cut short when she unexpectedly became paralysed. She spoke about how the process of learning to walk again helped her redefine her life. As she takes on the gruelling 4,400km Transcontinental Bicycle Race for the second time in July, she recounted how her rehabilitation taught her that we are capable of enduring infinitely more than we think, and that we should be brave enough to fail in pursuit of our dreams.

“I hope that my story illustrates that you are more than what happens to you, and that only you have the power to define your values and instil the discipline you need to achieve your goals. If there is one thing I’m certain of, it’s that life WILL have other plans for you at some point, but the only limits you are bound by are the ones you place on yourself.”

Dr Ruggins concluded with the very poignant message, “To the remarkable pupils we celebrate here tonight, if you can learn one thing from my story it is this: have the courage stand up for your values, the bravery to fail, and the strength to keep going. Take it one day at a time, and if that’s too much, one step at a time. I promise, you will arrive exactly where you’re meant to be.”

MAGNIFICENT MOLVENO

During half-term forty seven Lower Fourth pupils and six teachers took part in the iconic trip to Molveno in the Italian Dolomites.

This ever-popular trip to Italy has been running since 1987, and the number of St Benedict’s girls and boys who have participated has now reached in excess of 1,500!

As always, the trip was packed full of exciting activities. Some of the key highlights from this year included, a wonderful day exploring Venice, a shopping trip to Riva del Garda, a swimming gala, a mixed

netball tournament, the annual football match against the local team (which we sadly lost this year!), the wonderful Italian cuisine at the Hotel du Lac and spending time with friends, creating unforgettable memories (and a few amusing anecdotes!) for the future.

Senior Master, Mr Thomas recounts, “When Sixth Form students reach the end of their time at St Benedict’s, the talk is often along the lines of ‘Do you remember when in Molveno…?’. This trip is truly part of St Benedict’s folklore.”

“During my trip to Molveno, I bonded with lots of new friends, had a lot of fun and made long lasting memories. Venice for the canals, St Mark’s Square and shopping and Lake Garda for the delicious gelato, wonderful views and more shopping! The hotel was friendly and cosy with delicious, authentic three course Italian meals –it was pasta heaven!” Charlotte A

“From exploring the picturesque village surrounded by the breathtaking landscape to just playing Uno in the bar, Molveno was an incredible experience not to forget. It was full of amazing memories and fierce netball matches.” Mia S-W

“I really enjoyed Molveno and the trips to Venice and Riva. Everyone on the trip was so nice – Molveno was such a beautiful place to be in for a week. I would love to go again!”

“My favourite part of the trip was being able to explore the village of Molveno. I will never forget the view of the lake.” Hugh W

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards have once again been ever-popular.

During this academic year, 120 students have completed their DofE Awards so far, including:

15 Gold

38 Bronze

67 Silver

Some of our Upper Sixth students were invited to Buckingham Palace to celebrate achieving their DofE Gold awards and hear from guest speakers, Tim Peake, Frank Gardner and of course, the Duke of Edinburgh himself!

Activities still to come for the year include the Silver Assessment Expedition in the Surrey Hills, 23 – 25 June, the Bronze Assessment Expeditions, 1– 2 and 3 – 4 July and the Gold Assessment Expedition, 6 – 10 July.

8–12 April 2024

“I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the gold DofE practice expedition. Despite there being some very cold, wet days, the views across the Brecon Beacons were beautiful and we got to explore a place we never would have thought of visiting. The hiking was challenging, yet with the support of my friends and the staff involved, we got through it. I mostly enjoyed talking to a range of different people back at the campsite and holding the baby lambs. I am really looking forwards to the real expedition in July where, hopefully, the sun will be shining and wind won’t be blowing too hard.”

Georgia T (L6)

“The instructors and I have been so impressed with the Year 12 students doing their Gold Practice Expedition. Despite the torrid weather, they have all dug deep and been stoic, resistant, organised and determined to overcome all adversity against the weather has thrown at them. Even the instructors have been wet through with their top of the range gear!”

Their support, help and teamwork has been admirable when faced with a number of challenges – great young people” Ms Brown, DofE Programme Manager

DofE Silver Practice Expedition

12–14 May 2024

I enjoyed the experience of the Silver Expedition, as it was a way to get away from school life and do something completely different and spend that time with friends. Having completed the Bronze level last year, this was definitely more challenging with a step up in extremity, covering a 3-day period.

The skills learnt along the way were very valuable such as: bearings, navigation and survival. The walking element was more intense and tiring, but well worth the experience. I was part of a very good group, where we all got along well – this is what made the journey more enjoyable.

Going away for these expeditions, allowed me to take in the surroundings and stunning views of nature and the landscapes. We had plenty of fresh air and exercise, which was good for our well-being. This has been breath-taking and an experience that was well worth it.

HOLA! Form 1 Visit to Spain

During May, Form 1 went on a wonderful trip to Spain for a few days.

There, they gained first-hand experience of Spanish culture, along with a range of action-packed activities.

Their Spanish adventures included visiting The Royal Academy of Equestrian Art, where they were treated to a spectacular horse training display, sightseeing around Jerez, visiting the Cathedral in

Sevilla, hitting the beach, learning to make cheese at El Bucarito Farm and cuddling the farm animals.

However, the real highlight of the week was the adrenaline-fuelled Isla Magica Theme Park to round off their magical trip!

PGL

Students in Upper Prep had a wonderful time at their residential school trip with an action-packed three days spent at PGL in Marchant’s Hill.

Ms Grist, Upper Prep Form Tutor, detailed the trip.

“During our PGL trip we adopted an Olympic theme and grouped into countries to earn points for tasks throughout our stay. The pupils took part in a variety of activities including climbing, abseiling, paddle boarding, challenge course, zip wire as well as problem solving tasks. They were well supported by the excellent PGL staff; group and activity leaders who encouraged them to bravely try activities for

the first time. The children showed resilience by working together to accomplish their goals, setting themselves new targets as they went along. The children loved singing along to the group leader’s call and response songs as they walked between activities and mealtimes. One group made up their own song about their country to inspire themselves. They enjoyed staying in their room groups too, spending time with different children from their day groups, supporting each other if they began to miss their parents.”

“Make the most of the enjoyable time with your friends at PGL.” Ifan M

“A PGL trip is like a voyage of selfdiscovery where you abandon all fear and return home courageous and strong.” Antonia R

“I have never had an experience like that before. It was brilliant!”

Eleanor H

“I enjoyed PGL so much. I challenged myself in everything. It was a lovely experience and everyone should have a chance to go.” Olivia C

CANADA SKI TRIP TO

“Over the Easter holidays the school ski trip was held in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Forty-six students from Lower Fourth to Lower Sixth took to the wide open slopes and tree-lined hillsides of the Albertan mountains for some excellent skiing in amazing conditions.

The bears were still sleeping off the winter but there were plenty of elk (large, dangerous deer) and other wildlife to see. Highlights of the après-ski included snow-shoeing to the top of a mountain viewpoint, visiting a planetarium and a talk from a local wildlife expert (who doubled as our chief instructor). Skier of the week was Harry E (L4), although all skiers – and those who started as non-skiers –made amazing progress, and again we had no injuries.

An overnight snowfall before the last day, made for fun skiing conditions and truly memorable views on the coach journey back to the airport, with a stop at the spectacular, frozen Lake Louise.

Many thanks to Mrs McKenna, Mrs Yue, Mr O’Hara, Mrs Yates and Mr Victory and the brilliantly behaved students for a fabulous week!”

Billinge

“I loved the ski trip. The slopes were really beautiful and I learnt a lot from the teachers and instructors. The food was also amazing!” Eva P (L4)

“The Canada Ski trip was amazing. I really enjoyed the skiing and the activities in the afternoon. The snow was amazing all week. The thing that stood out to me the most was the hike up the mountain. Although it was very tiring the view at the end was spectacular. I had a fabulous week.” Harry E (L4)

“I’ve been on 5 Ski trips since I’ve joined the school and they are always great fun and a good way to get better at skiing and have a good time with your mates.”

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIPS

THAMES EXPLORER TRUST

The Lower Fourth school trip to the Thames Explorer Trust in Chiswick was an unforgettable adventure bringing the theory of what students had learnt in school to life. Students explored the rich heritage of the River Thames through interactive activities, including a hands-on session on the foreshore where they discovered ancient artefacts and learned about the river’s ecological importance.

Guided by knowledgeable educators from the Thames Explorer Trust, they delved into the diverse wildlife that inhabits the Thames and discussed the vital role of conservation efforts, deepening their understanding of local history and environmental science as well as inspiring a greater appreciation for the natural world. One of the main highlights included finding crabs and leaches under small rocks, uncovering a new-found respect for their local river!

BOX HILL

In April, Upper Fourth students visited Box Hill in Surrey to investigate the impact of human activities on this iconic chalk escarpment. There, they carried out a range of primary data collection methods such as environmental surveys, field sketches, photography, and smell scapes to think about the different ways that humans are having an impact on our fragile ecosystem.

LOURDES

This year, seven Lower Sixth pupils spent a week in Lourdes over Easter, working with disabled and disadvantaged young people as part of the HCPT Pilgrimage. They were well-prepared for the trip, having had lots of training in the months before the Pilgrimage. Our student volunteers worked in their small groups (which included many former pupils who help each year) to help create a happy, memorable week for the young people in their care. There they spent time in the mountains, organised parties, and participated in many Pilgrimage activities including Mass with 5,000 people from all over the world.

“Our Students were a credit to the school; they worked with good humour and maturity.”

Mr McKeown, L5 Division Head

“Lourdes was life-changing. During the pilgrimage, we had the chance to connect with the wider community and foster a loving and welcoming space for the individuals with disabilities who were under our care. It was an amazing way to see how quickly people can bond and forge relationships when everyone involved puts so much energy for the exclusive purpose of helping others. I’m excited to say I will be returning with our group next year and would strongly recommend the trip to anyone considering it!”

OUTWARD BOUND TRIP

THE LAKE DISTRICT

In May, Form 2 had a wonderful week of adventures at the Outward Bound trip to The Lake District. They scrambled up waterfalls, jumped off cliffs, climbed mountains and camped out under the stars in an unforgettable trip to mark the end of their final year at Junior School.

“My favourite activity was definitely swimming in the lake – it was cold but lots of fun!” Lisa K

“The activities were so much fun. My personal favourite was the cliff jumping.” George G

“The Lake District trip was an amazing and challenging experience where we had lots of fun.” Luna A

“The Outward Bound trip was one of my favourite experiences of the Junior School and I can’t wait for another trip like it.” Alex Z

“This was one of my most amazing experiences ever and I would definitely recommend this to anyone. My favourite part was gorge walking as you are walking up a humungous and majestic waterfall.”

Middle School Concert

On Friday 14 June, the Middle School showcased their musical talents with a wonderful range of ensembles, choir and solo performances at their Summer Concert.

The evening opened with the Middle School Jazz Band, playing Daft Punk’s, ‘Get Lucky’ followed by the Concert Choir’s beautiful performance of Bogoroditse Dyevo by Rachmaninoff.

We were also treated to some highly accomplished instrumental and vocal solos including, Freddie M playing

’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover’ on the Drums, Elsa M-A’s performance of Chopin’s ‘Raindrop’ Prelude Op.28, No15, and vocals from Sheelun J singing ‘She Used to be Mine‘ by Sarah Bareilles and Leo G’s performance of JVKE’s ‘This is What Falling in Love Feels Like‘

The Middle School Band, Junior Percussion and Guitar Ensemble completed the line up with some truly inspired musical renditions while the Girls’ Choir rounded off the evening with powerful vocals of ‘Go the Distance’ from Hercules by Eric Sammut.

The evening was particularly poignant as it marked the final concert for Assistant Director of Music, Miss John

who leaves St Benedict’s at the end of this academic year.

Mr Eastwood, Director of Music, spoke about the ‘huge contribution that Miss John has made to the school’ and how she has ‘inspired a large number of pupils to join ensembles and established the Girls’ Choir as a place of real creativity and skill.’

Mr Eastwood also went on to celebrate the talents of all the performers, “As well as the wonderful ensemble work going on in the department, there are of course a huge number of skilled musicians developing their solo performance credentials.”

Summer Concert 2024

Soloists, choirs and ensembles performed at the Summer Concert in May, which was a wonderful evening of music and a celebration of St Benedict’s Upper Sixth musicians in their final term at the school.

Students from Form 3 upwards, delivered a rich and varied programme of music, featuring powerful and accomplished performances from the Orchestra, String Group, Sixth Form Percussion and Wind Band, as well as some truly uplifting performances from The Big Band and Jazz Bands.

Director of Music, Mr Eastwood said, “We are hugely grateful to our Upper Sixth musicians for their involvement in, and contribution to, the musical life of the school over a number of years. As teachers we have watched their development from young musicians to the mature, thoughtful young adults that we see here this evening. Their hard work and commitment have been an example to all of our younger musicians and they have enthusiastically embraced all of the opportunities that have been presented to them over the years.”

MOOCs Presentations

On 21 May, St Benedict’s Sixth Form students taking MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) presented their studies to parents, teachers and friends.

The evening showcased the impressive breadth and depth of their learning, from psychology, law and politics, to sport, the environment and AI in medicine.

St Benedict’s Sixth Form students have the option to take MOOCs alongside their A Levels, so that they can extend their knowledge and add a new dimension to their learning. They are designed by universities from all over the world, covering a vast range of subjects and are entirely online making them readily accessible to learn.

Sustainable Aviation: The Route to Climate-Neutral Aviation (Delft University of Technology)

“I found the general topics extremely valuable and interesting. The topics

helped me develop my interests in entrepreneurship, linking well to my personal experience in business and my future plans to study business at university. They also helped me gain a deeper understanding of some of the subjects I am studying at A level.” Rowan D (L6)

Understanding Brain Health: Preventing Dementia (FutureLearn)

“I loved the opportunity to be able to further my knowledge in this area as this is a topic I would like to study in university. This MOOC is

MOOCs

perfect for anyone who is interested in neuroscience and brain health and pharmacology, as it delved into how to carry out safe drug trials. I would also recommend this MOOC to anyone who wants to help prevent the rise of neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia.”

Ruth M (L6)

English Football: A Social History (University of Leicester)

“The story of Leicester winning the league title is a brilliant story which all can appreciate whether you follow football or not. What I enjoyed about

the MOOC was the conciseness of information. There were several short videos from players who played in 60s and 70s for Leicester to give an individualised touch to the Leicester part of the course. The course was only 4 weeks long, so relatively short and easy to complete whilst gaining good knowledge in that time.”

Harvey S (L6)

Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (University of Padova)

“As a student hoping to study law at university completing a MOOC

MOOCs

on international humanitarian law broadened my knowledge on the legal framework for international human rights. Overall, doing a MOOC was such an engaging and informative course that I would recommend to all students hoping to either narrow down a particular field of study they want to continue at University or even to enhance their own knowledge on a particular topic.”

SPORT ST BENEDICT’S

ATHLETICS

This year Athletics has showcased an outstanding level of enthusiasm and skill, with students from all ages participating with passion at a range of competitions against prominent schools such as Harrow, St Mary’s, Eton, Epsom, Mill Hill and Gordon’s.

This has been instrumental in fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among the students.

The girls’ teams in their fixtures have excelled in field events, with notable performances in the long jump and discus throw, highlighting their dedication and training.

Competing against St Mary’s Ascot, the girls’ teams particularly shone, dominating in several events including the 800 metres and high jump, showcasing their versatility and competitive spirit.

We finished the season with an outstanding performance from our Form 3 and Lower Fourth pupils at Epsom College with many pupils finishing in 2nd and 3rd places

several events: Mia Y (L3) 2nd in 200m, Atticus G (L4) 2nd in Javelin, Ina I

across

Form 3 and Lower Fourth athletes at Epsom College

The highlight of the season has been the U15 boys’ team’s outstanding achievement in winning the prestigious national Achilles Schools’ Relay Competition, held at the world renowned Iffley Road Stadium at Oxford University on 2 May.

This is the premier athletics relay event on the schools’ calendar, featuring 40 of the top schools from around the country.

The U15 boys 4x100m relay team came in an amazing first place with a time of 46.4, beating many prestigious teams. While doing so, they broke the track record held by QE Barnet which had stood since 1988 and also beat the school U15

TENNIS

record by 1.1 seconds which has stood since 1981!

The success and experiences from all these competitions have set a high standard for future athletics endeavours, encouraging a culture of excellence and perseverance within the school community.

“I have been lucky enough in my career in professional sport to see and be part of some pretty amazing experiences over the last 15 years. However, what the students achieved this term, and in particular at the

Tennis has had a great start to the year with every pupil having represented the school in a friendly fixture so far.

The U14 girls and boys have entered the ‘Play your way to Wimbledon’ singles and are currently at the semi finals and final stage of the competition where the winners will have an opportunity to play against other club and school players at the county stage.

Several teams from Form 3 to Lower Fifth have also entered the LTA Middlesex League (Division 2) where they faced some tough opposition so far. We look forward to seeing where they are placed at the end of the tournament.

Our Form 3 and Lower Fourth boys’ team have successfully won their group stage in Division 1 of the LTA Middlesex League and progress to play in the Middlesex Finals in the weeks to come – we wish them the best of luck!

Achilles Relay, was amazing to be part of and will be one of the fondest memories in my coaching and teaching career.

Apart from congratulating the students, a massive thank you to all the other staff that have worked with them over the years and the athletics programme that has been developed to allow sporting talent to flourish. Miss Williamson (our relay specialist!) and I were fortunate enough to be able to witness them cross the line at these events.”

Mr Hanbury, Head of Athletics, Cross Country and Strength & Conditioning

Huge congratulations to Owen K who has been selected to represent Middlesex at the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships in the U17 100m event in Birmingham in July. We wish him the best of luck for this fantastic achievement in the elite group for his age.

CRICKET

Cricket has had a very successful start to the season across the board. The 1st XI team recorded their first ever victory against UCS, advancing through to the third round of the U18 National Competition.

They also remain unbeaten in our Saturday Block fixtures heading into the second half of the term with 5 victories from 5 matches.

Our 1st XI also hosted the MCC on the May Bank Holiday, and for the first time in recent years bowled them out for 129. Sadly, they finished second best, being bowled out for 94 but this was really promising for a young side against a group of talented adult cricketers.

Our U12 A reached the semi-final of the Middlesex Cup and winning their group at the Reigate Sixes. Our U13 A are in the semi-final of the Middlesex Cup and our U15 A reached the area semi-final of the National Cup before being knocked out by a strong team from Harrow School.

CRICKET TOUR 2024 – SRI LANKA

During the Easter holidays, our U13 and U14 cricketers had the amazing opportunity to travel to Sri Lanka to play cricket. They played a total of 7 matches and won 3 close encounters.

Special mentions to Alex B (L4) who was the first St Benedict’s boy to ever score a century on Tour and Johnny D (U4) who scored a magnificent 147 off 57 balls on Tour.

The boys were treated to an enriching experience that encompassed everything that Sri Lanka had to offer. A very memorable experience for all!

achieved without the hard work of the sports department, especially Miss Maynard, Miss Broome, Miss Williamson, Mr Hanbury and Miss Hill who have facilitated our fitness and training sessions, allowing us to perform at the highest

standards we could. It has been a pleasure leading this year’s first team and seeing everyone grow throughout the season. The friendships and bonds built with everyone in the team has been a significant highlight and good luck to the teams in the years to come. I hope that the legacy of netball as one of the most successful girls’ sports in St Benedict’s continues to prosper.”

NETBALL

Congratulations to Carmela R (U4) who has been selected for the U17s Netball Ireland Squad for the 2024 – 25 season. After having taken part in a set of trials in Ireland, Carmela successfully secured her spot in the Irish U17 squad as one of the youngest team members. Carmela has had a hugely impressive netball season, representing Middlesex Netball at county level, and most recently, captaining her Team Ealing squad into their upcoming London Youth Games finals at the Copper Box Arena. We wish Carmela the very best in her future training with Ireland as they prepare for the Netball Europe Championships.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT

TENNIS

Pupils from Upper Prep to Form 2 have enjoyed participating in Tennis during games. We have seen a wide range of abilities, with some pupils having never played before, to others having played regularly at local clubs. During sessions, has catered for all abilities on a weekly basis ranging from an underarm serve for the beginners and working on their groundstrokes (forehand and backhand), this has enabled those to now rally with a partner and be exposed to matches. Our more advanced pupils are developing their overarm serve and topspin, looking at the tactical play in Tennis.

Our Form 1 had a friendly against Kew Green Preparatory –it was great to see them play in a competitive environment, demonstrating the skills they have learnt at games.

Well done to Aiden Y (F1), Kiera M (F1), James G (F2) and Jaime L (F2) who took part in The Oratory Grass Tennis Tournament – they had a wonderful day with great experience learning to play on grass courts, not to mention winning a few games in the process!

ATHLETICS

The boys and girls from Upper Prep, Form 1 and Form 2 have been learning the basics for several athletics events this term. The students have developed their skills in the key track and field events and have had several internal competitions during games lessons so that they can gain experience of how an athletics competition works.

In May they had their first inter-school meet at Perivale athletics track competing against pupils from St Augustine’s, St Gregory’s and Fulham Boys where they performed extremely well.

CRICKET

This term, cricket has seen a variety of ability and experience across Upper Prep, Form 1 and Form 2 students, focusing on both technical and tactical aspects of the game through match play and individual 1:1 drills.

Forms 1 & 2 were invited to St Paul’s School for a fixture involving a mixture of hard ball and soft ball matches, with Form 2 successfully winning their match.

Pupils in Pre-Prep 3 and Lower Prep have also enjoyed participating in cricket by learning the basic techniques involved in throwing and catching the ball and progressing to overarm bowling. Recently, they transitioned onto Kwik Cricket where they are enjoying batting, and demonstrating the fielding skills they have learnt during matches.

Each year our recruits who have passed their initial training at Recruit Camp in March are awarded their berets and presented awards during a formal parade on site at school.

This year, the event was of particular significance as the date also marks our change of affiliation from the Royal Engineers to the Grenadier Guards.

“Thank you to all the CCF team for a tremendous end of year review this weekend. I was thoroughly impressed with the flawless display, clear commitment & professionalism of all involved. The enjoyment & camaraderie that the recruits have was evident. It was very moving.” St Benedict’s Parent

DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

NEWS

Dear Parents,

Annual Fund 2024

We are very grateful for all the support you, our parent community, have shown for both our Annual Fund and our Annual Giving Week this year. These appeals play a vital part in the ability of the Development Office to assist with the everincreasing requirement for Bursary funding and to deliver additional projects for the School that will enhance the educational experience of all of our Junior and Senior School students.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our Upper Sixth parents who recently generously supported our Leaver’s Deposit Bursary Appeal this term. The funds raised from this appeal will have a hugely positive impact and directly financially support an academically talented young person to attend our Sixth Form on a bursary place.

Thank you again for your generous support this year and wishing all our families a peaceful and relaxing summer break.

Best wishes,

St Benedict’s Connect

Our Alumni platform – St Benedict’s Connect continues to grow in strength. The platform has well over 750 Old Priorian Mentors available to help with careers advice, work experience and workplace introductions. There is also a wide variety of University, Event, Employment and Community information. All Sixth Form students are warmly invited to join us if they have not already done so.
