Alumnae Anne and Cathy Bendel were both named as a Top Doctor of 2020 Mpls.St.Paul Magazine 2020
There are many paths to becoming a doctor. Most
medical schools encourage prospective applicants to pursue any of a variety of four-year liberal arts degrees — and our future physicians do!
The Program of Study You will need to be proficient in science and acquire a lot of science credits for medical school application, but you are not required to be a science major. Our students go on to medical school after majoring in chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, Spanish, and theology, to name a few.
The Classes You will work closely with our pre-med advisor to plot out a curriculum, but most pre-med students take “General Chemistry I,” “Foundations of Biology I,” and “The Reflective Woman” courses in their first semester. Other core courses in chemistry, mathematics, biology, and social sciences are also part of the program.
The Career Advantage Medical schools will expect you to have some hospital experience, so, start volunteering at one today! Kristina Roth ’14 served as a research assistant at both the Minneapolis VA Health Care System and Hennepin County Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
The St. Kate’s Difference Student-faculty collaborative research is strongly encouraged and many result in conference presentations and manuscripts for publication. St. Kate’s also offers a wealth of resources to help you get into — and succeed — in med school, including connecting you with Katies who are practicing physicians. “We’re committed to working with student researchers. So you’ll get lots of hands-on experience to add to your resume.” — Gina Mancini-Samuelson, pre-med advisor
Prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) St. Catherine University’s pre-medicine program has the prerequisite courses to prepare you for the MCAT. Most medical schools consider a four-year liberal arts background the best preparation for studying medicine and for a professional career as a practicing physician. “St. Kate’s gave me a strong foundation to become a physician.” — Kristina Roth ’14, MD, Children’s National Medical Center
