Driven to find the best solutions to pressing social problems? At St. Catherine University, public policy students

graduate prepared to create, evaluate, and advocate for effective and just social programs and policies.

The Major Students majoring in public policy learn the political context and underlying economic models of public policy in order to understand how to build a just and sustainable society. With an emphasis on applied policy research, students use economic and political tools to identify policy problems and evaluate the impact of policies and programs.

The Classes The program emphasizes issues of justice and equality, applied research skills, a combination of quantitative and writing skills, and the importance of women’s leadership in government. Broad theoretical work is paired with applied skills needed in today’s policy analyst roles, including cost benefit analysis, policy evaluation, data visualization, and crafting effective policy memos.

The Career Advantage Students gain applied skills, in-depth knowledge of economic and political processes, and a deep appreciation for fundamental questions of fairness, equality, and justice. This major prepares students for careers in social justice organizations, government agencies, elected office, nonprofits, and non-governmental organizations.

The St. Kate’s Difference St. Kate’s emphasis on social justice led us to create this powerful degree. The program provides students with important policy tools like statistics, a strong grounding in economics and political science, and depth of study in major policy issues. Students can focus on issues such as inequality, discrimination, or healthcare. “Being an effective advocate for a more just world increasingly requires economic reasoning, statistical analysis, professional writing, and understanding of the political process.” — Marina Mileo Gorzig, PhD, assistant professor

Gain Practical Experience Public policy majors can gain practical experience through an independent or collaborative research project or an internship. Collaborative research allows students to work with faculty on real policy problems. Students have worked on real-world projects such as racial profiling in Minneapolis and hiring and retaining teachers with Minneapolis Public Schools. “St. Kate’s public policy program has given me the opportunity to learn and analyze real world issues. As an aspiring lawmaker I have been able to get hands-on experience by learning how to evaluate policies.” — Barbara Salinas ’20

<1% of government spending is backed by evidence. As a St. Kate’s public policy major, you will learn how to advocate for a more just and sustainable society.
