To express yourself well when speaking or writing is a fundamental strength highly valued in any career or grad program. Being able to analyze language is another valuable skill. Through exploration and analysis of diverse literature and ideas, you’ll hone your critical thinking skills and increase your own facility of the English language. Explore diverse aesthetic, linguistic, and cultural traditions in global contexts of social justice. Our graduates leave with a broad understanding of literary studies, linguistics, and writing, which prepares them for careers in a variety of fields. St. Kate’s English majors make notable contributions campus-wide, including to campus news in The Wheel; to Ariston, the annual literary and visual arts magazine; to the Tutoring and Learning Center as writing mentors; and to the Antonian Honors Program.
YOU WILL LEARN TO:
• Read comprehensively and write effectively and imaginatively
• Learn and utilize critical and literary theory, core areas of linguistics, and different creative genres in practicing critical literacy in writing
• Contextualize language and literature globally and confront gender, race, ethnic, ability, and socioeconomic differences from a foundation of social justice
• Pursue opportunities for career-readiness and professionalization

3+2 Dual-Degree Opportunities
St. Kate’s offers the opportunity to apply a student’s liberal arts education in the fields of public health, holistic health studies, and library and information science through a unique 3+2 dual-degree program. The dual-degree program allows students to complete their bachelor’s degree in English while pursuing a Master of Public Health in Global Health (MPH), a Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies, or a Master of Library and Information Science degree, finishing both in as little as five years.
