HISTORY
Do you enjoy reading about events in the past?
Are you interested in learning about history from different perspectives?
Would you like to improve your critical thinking and research skills?
History is the study of interpretation rather than the memorization of facts. How does the past matter for the present? How did people/ideas/societies change over time or stay the same? It is not just one story, but, if you dig, many stories, each from a valid, but differing, point of view. This program develops historical thinking skills, including the ability to recognize and wrestle with context and complexity. It will awaken your ability to consider different perspectives, to evaluate competing interpretations and make informed judgements. It also strengthens your research and writing skills — all hallmarks of a strong liberal arts education highly valued in a variety of careers.
YOU WILL LEARN TO:
• Think and read critically
• Employ historical thinking skills
• Bring together information from multiple sources to tell a story
• Read and interpret sources from the past
• Make connections between the past and present

HOLISTIC: We do not forget the traditional focus of history on those leaders with the most power, but we work to bring a fuller set of voices to the table. The program is threaded with an emphasis on women’s history, and the history of other groups often overlooked.
URBAN OPPORTUNITY: The Minnesota Historical Society, which houses a state-ofthe-art research facility and visitor-friendly museum, offers internship opportunities for students and is located just minutes from campus. There are also several city and county archives and historical museums in the area.
