The Major
years since humanity began studying philosophy
Our program focuses on discussions, not lecture! You’ll learn how exciting ideas can be — and you’ll feel empowered to question situations, beliefs, and issues that you encounter every day.

The Classes
topics courses that vary in theme each year
The subject matter of your two required courses changes from year to year. Recent examples are “Native American Philosophy,” “Food Ethics,” “Philosophy of Sex,” “William Shakespeare and Philosophy,” and “Philosophy and Animal Minds.” You then choose other courses according to your interests. A future lawyer might include “Social and Political Philosophy;” a philosophy-English double major would select “Philosophic Themes in Literature.”
The Career Advantage You’ll be ready to pursue careers across a broad swath of society, including medicine, politics, teaching and corporate training — or tackle grad school. Studies show that philosophy grads tend to outperform other students on the Law School Admissions Test and the Graduate Management Admissions Test.
The St. Kate’s Difference Our faculty are role models and mentors, and they’re invited to speak around the world. So, you’ll learn a tremendous amount from them! Their many interests include biomedical ethics, human evil, Asian philosophy, effective altruism, the moral obligation of present-day people for past injustices, philosophy and film, feminism, and environmental ethics. “I encourage my students to think about what they value and to make decisions that best reflect those values.” — Jeff Johnson, PhD, associate professor and associate dean
Try a Double Major Philosophy is an attractive second major if you want to tailor your learning to your interests — and increase your job prospects after graduation! We require eight courses total, and you get to decide which six courses to take (in addition to two compulsory classes). St. Kate’s students successfully combine philosophy with other majors, including chemistry, English, and history. “Philosophy tells you that it can be good to be skeptical. It teaches you there are richer ways to engage with life.” — Anne Maloney, PhD, associate professor
100 % of philosophy courses engage diverse philosophical perspectives.
75% of the philosophy faculty are women.
