Missouri State University, SCC sign agreements
SCC designated as Military Friendly School® SCC was named to the 2014 Military Friendly Schools® list, which honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The Military Friendly Schools® media and website, found at www. militaryfriendlyschools.com, feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences.
SCC’s Enrollment Services Department created a one-stop shop for veterans and current service members. SCC began the Honoring Military Families Scholarship in February 2012. A Student Veteran Organization was organized in the fall of 2012, and in spring 2013 SCC opened a Student Veteran Lounge and began a veteran-specific orientation. ALLIED HEALTH UPDATES State grant will support SCC nursing program
Partnership scores another award
The SCC Associate Degree Nursing Program recently was awarded $142,260 from the Missouri Board of Nursing. The funds will assist the college in increasing the capacity of the nursing program by integrating technology into the multi-disciplinary teaching strategy, adding faculty/staff to support integration of technology into the curriculum, and acquiring state-of-the-art simulation software/ equipment.
The Chesterfield-based civic group, Progress 64 West, will present a joint award to LU and SCC for the new Center of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at their 26th Annual Community Excellence Awards Banquet on Nov. 27. This year’s keynote speaker will be Missouri Governor Jay Nixon.
Missouri State University and SCC signed three articulation agreements and a Memorandum of Understanding Oct. 4 to promote seamless transfer for students. This agreement provides students who have earned an Associate of Arts at SCC the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree at MSU. Any SCC student who has earned an Associate of Arts and adheres to the transfer guidelines is guaranteed that MSU will accept designated freshman and sophomore education credits and all general education credits and will apply them to the bachelor’s degree in a manner consistent with the transfer guidelines. “The access to educational opportunities provided by SCC to students in our community will be strengthened as a result of these agreements.” said Chris Breitmeyer, SCC vice president for academic and student affairs. “I am hopeful we will continue to collaborate on ways to provide students access to a bachelor’s degrees and beyond.” Students seeking online degrees will be able to pursue a Bachelor of Science in communication, professional writing, general business or finance. In the field of education, students with an Associate of Arts in Teaching may transfer in four Bachelor of Science in education degree completion programs: early childhood education, elementary education, middle school education and special education/ cross-categorical. In addition, the agreement for the Bachelor of Science in nursing degree completion program will allow practicing nurses to complete their degree online through MSU.
SCC wins awards for marketing and public relations SCC received 13 district-level Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges. The SCC Office of Marketing and Communications took home the following awards in the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. The four gold awards were for annual report, folder, magazine and printed viewbook. The three silver awards were for college promotional video, communications success story and website. Six bronze awards were presented for brochure/flyer, computergenerated illustration, direct mail campaign, novelty advertising, social marketing and sports brochure. The awards were announced at the annual NCMPR District 5 conference in Minneapolis in September. NCMPR has more than 1,500 members from more than 650 colleges across the United States, Canada and other countries.
Annual golf tournament proceeds support scholarships and academic enhancements The St. Charles Community College Foundation raised more than $39,000 at its 17th annual Presidents Classic Golf Scramble on Monday, Sept. 30, at the Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund scholarships and academic enhancements. “Quality higher education remains accessible for students in our region because of the generous support from these community members,” said Betsy Schneider, SCC director of development. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital/ Progress West Hospital was the “Eagle” sponsor. “Birdie” sponsors were RX Systems, Inc., and SSM St. Joseph Health Center and Hospital West. “Par” sponsors included Acropolis Investment Management LLC,
Ameren Missouri,Commerce Bank, Enterprise Bank & Trust, FastLane Convenience Stores, General Motors, NHC HealthCare and Rehabilitation, Paric Corporation, Utilimap Corporation andUPS. Scott Liebel, supervising engineer at Ameren Missouri, and Justin Miller, financial advisor at Edward Jones, were co-chairs of the planning committee for this year’s golf scramble.

Veterans Day celebration events set for Nov. 4-8 SCC will celebrate Veterans Day with a series of events planned Nov. 4-8, culminating with the Veterans Celebration at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the College Center gymnasium, featuring keynote speaker Brig. Gen. Gregory S. Champagne, assistant adjutant general – air, Missouri National Guard.
The events will be held during the week preceding Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. They are free and open to the public, and will take place on the college’s campus in Cottleville. Veterans Week Ceremonial March 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, Campus Plaza
The ceremony will include the SCC Concert Band under the direction of David Dickey, the SCC Choir under the direction of Gene Ditch, local veteran organizations and their color guards, a tribute to President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and salutes to veterans. ESP Trivia Night raises $5,000 The third annual Employee Sponsored Program Trivia Night raised $5,000 through entries and some 19 auction baskets. Proceeds from the event will support student scholarships. SCC’s Trivia Night was sponsored by General Motors and SCC Friends and Alumni.
Wirth awarded Presidential Scholarship to academy Suzanne Wirth, associate director of institutional research and effectiveness, completed coursework recently as the recipient of Presidential Scholarship to the Academy of Institutional Research’s Data and Decisions Academy. The association is committed to building capacity in institutional research and data use at two-year institutions. The AIR courses are self-paced, online professional development for institutional researchers that build research skills needed to support data-informed decision making. SCC President Ron Chesbrough nominated Wirth and the association awarded the

scholarship allowing her to enroll and complete two courses, Designing IR Research and Overview of Survey Design.
In Memoriam: Helen Schnare, long-time SCC supporter Men’s soccer wins MCCAC conference title SCC men’s soccer team defeated East Central College to earn the Midwest Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC) title on Oct. 6. The final score was 2-1. As a member of the MCCAC Conference, the Cougars went undefeated in conference games, beating Jefferson College 2-1, St. Louis Community College 6-0 and East Central 2-1. The Cougars have had a strong showing so far this season with 11 wins, three losses and one tie. The Region XVI Tournament takes place on Oct. 26. The women’s soccer team has posted a 10-4 record to date.
Helen T. Schnare, longtime SCC friend and benefactor, passed away Oct. 10. Mrs. Schnare was part of the fabric of St. Charles Community College having served on the steering committee that helped to establish the college district in St. Charles County in the 1980s. Her husband, the late Paul Schnare, served on the first SCC Board of Trustees from 1986-90. Mrs. Schnare taught English and speech for 23 years at St. Charles High School. She previously taught for two years in Leadwood, Mo., and in Boston, Mass., from 1968-1970. Helen’s public service included an appointment as a commissioner for the Missouri Department of Highways and Transportation from 1983-1989. When the new campus opened in 1992, the Schnares volunteered their time in the library.

Following Paul’s death in 1997, Mrs. Schnare established the SCC Foundation’s first endowed scholarships. In 1998, Mrs. Schnare served as the keynote speaker at the college’s 10th commencement.
