Keeping education affordable Carol McCauley Swink Memorial Scholarship is making a difference
FAMILY CONTINUES LEGACY BY EDUCATING OTHERS etermined to make a positive impact after a tragic accident, Sue Klobnak and her family established an endowed scholarship as a living legacy in memory of her sister Carol, who was a victim of a drunk driver in 1991. Just prior to the accident, Carol had decided to change careers from cosmetology to nursing, and started taking classes at SCC. Sue and her family wanted to honor Carol's hard work, caring nature, compassion for others and desire to help people by establishing the scholarship. As a high school teacher, Sue said she also saw a need in the community to help others go to college. The family continues to support the scholarship today. Now in place of sadness is an everlasting, positive tribute to Carol that is helping many students to reach their own dreams of getting a college education.

uch like Sue Klobnak’s sister, Erin also wants to change her career from cosmetology to nursing. With a passion for helping others, a dream to work in the medical field and a need to help support her family, Erin decided to become a nurse. She was inspired by her mother who also went back to school later in life to become a nurse. Erin is now surrounded by friends and family in the nursing profession who are encouraging her and ready to help her if needed.

While she is still considering what area of nursing to specialize in, she currently is working toward an associate degree in nursing. Her plans are to begin her career in nursing and then eventually continue on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Erin has made a few sacrifices, but she wants to show her two children that you can do anything your heart desires. She also is willing to put in the work it takes to accomplish her dream. “If you dream about it, you can make it happen,” Erin said.

Now students learning engineering in SCC workforce development and industrial training programs like manufacturing, supply chain logistics and welding have access to this technology. It is also used at community outreach events like Manufacturing Day and the Lego Robotics Challenge to introduce high school students to engineering.
SCC students can experience 3D printing thanks to help from the SCC Foundation in providing the filament for a 3D printer recently donated to the SCC library. Use of this new technology is increasing in the workforce, from manufacturing to medicine.
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT ENHANCES LEARNING nfant manikins and other donated equipment create a realistic medical environment for students who are studying to become medical assistants. The Medical Assisting certificate program was added in January as SCC continues to develop its programs to better meet the needs of the growing healthcare industry. Students are learning to assist doctors with administrative and clinical responsibilities, preparing to work in physician offices, clinics, labs, surgery centers, long-term healthcare facilities and more. Thanks to your generosity, the SCC Foundation was able to fill a need for supplies, providing an EKG machine to perform cardiac testing, a machine to complete sterilization procedures, manikins for studying infant care and other classroom materials students use to learn necessary skills required for certification.

Graduates today, leaders of tomorrow Students and community reap benefits
STEVEN THOMAS CLASS OF 2001 decorated military veteran of the U.S. Navy with 20 years of experience working in the intelligence community, Steven is director of advanced systems and manager of business development for Ball Aerospace and Technologies in St. Louis. Steven also is president and founder of GEO STL, a 501(c)3 focused on establishing a center of excellence and hub of the Geospatial Industry in the greater St. Louis region. While serving in the Navy, he developed a passion for the field of intelligence and decided to further his education so that he would be able to continue and advance in his field. Although he previously earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, he needed a different degree for his career path. He chose St. Charles Community College because it was near where he grew up and offered a flexible course schedule. He credits SCC for helping him to make the transition from the Navy into collegiate studies.

After earning an Associate of Arts degree from SCC, he transferred to the University of Missouri-St. Louis to earn a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and then a Master of Business Administration. While Steven likes his career, he is most proud of his family. He and his wife live in Defiance, Mo., and have two boys (9 and 3) and two girls (8 and 5). He enjoys spending time coaching their swimming and soccer teams and being a Cub Scout leader.
Meet Jamie Koenig CL ASS OF 2015 , SCHOL ARSHIP RECIPIENT, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER
A scholarship from the SCC Foundation helped this hard-working, determined young professional put her lifelong goal to teach children into action. Today Jamie has her first job teaching first grade in the Fort Zumwalt School District and loves being a positive influence and a resource for kids in her own community. Because she took advantage of the many resources at SCC, she said now there is nothing to hold her back – not even finances. “If it weren’t for SCC, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Jamie said. While getting her Associate of Arts in Teaching, she was able to get experience in a classroom setting and be a part of the Junior Achievement program. Her excellent grades allowed her to get another scholarship for the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in elementary education and special education. She said she plans to continue on to get a master’s degree in school counseling. “I really appreciate the opportunities the scholarship and the college provided for me,” Jamie said.
Meet Eva Jones CL ASS OF 2018, SCHOL ARSHIP RECIPIENT, FUTURE NURSE With a mom who is a nurse, a dad who was a police officer and paramedic, and a grandma who worked as a clerk in a hospital, Eva is following in the footsteps of the others in her family by becoming a nurse. “I love the nursing faculty,” Eva said. “They will tell you straight up that sometimes it will be difficult and time-consuming, but that it will also improve your life and you will be so proud of what you did.” Eva earned an Associate of Science degree at SCC. She plans to become a Registered Nurse for labor and delivery, and then to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

While working toward her nursing degree, Eva also worked part-time at a hospital as a patient access representative. Though even with a part-time job, Eva said the scholarship made all the difference in being able to go to school, get an education and achieve a degree. “When I opened the letter with my mom and found out I received a scholarship, I started dancing in the yard,” Eva said. “Thank you so much for helping me to continue my education. I would give you a hug if I could.”

128 golfers came together to raise more than $46,000 at the 21st annual Presidents Classic Golf Scramble on Sept. 25, 2017. Co-chairs were Richard Jensen and Chuck Pilliod.
The Food Truck Frolic and Family Movie Night events are a team effort made possible by volunteers and staff from SCC Student Activities, the SCC Foundation and the Cottleville-Weldon Spring Chamber of Commerce. Events are held monthly during the summer, each with food trucks, vendors and a family movie beginning at dusk.

COMMUNIT Y MEMBERS GIVE BACK Vials and labels in the pharmacy at the Center for Healthy Living were donated by RX Systems, Inc. This is one of many classrooms to receive educational equipment thanks to Richard and Linda Jensen.
RICHARD AND LINDA JENSEN ntrepreneurism and family go hand in hand for Richard and Linda Jensen. They believe that if we want a qualified workforce, we need to invest in the education of future generations. Early in his life, Richard’s service in the U.S. Air Force sparked an interest in medicine, and he said a community college chemistry professor later cultivated that interest. He earned an Associate of Arts in chemistry and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. While at the college in Rochester, Minn., he met his future wife Linda, who had just become 14

a Licensed Practical Nurse. After getting married and graduating from the University of Minnesota, Richard was fortunate to find a good job in the health field. It wasn’t long, however, until he developed a strong desire to become an entrepreneur. Richard turned his original interest in medicine into a successful family business when he started RX Systems, Inc., in 1979. Today he is CEO of the St. Charles-based manufacturer and provider of pharmacy packaging and supplies, which has grown to 270 employees, including his three children.
Because of his own experience starting at a community college, Richard recognizes the role it plays in the education of his employees and knows first-hand the importance of providing scholarships along with the proper equipment for student education. That’s what motivates him today to help raise funds for students through the SCC Foundation, where he serves as a board member and co-chairs the golf committee. Richard and Linda have two sons, Jason and Derek, one daughter, Eve, and eight grandchildren.
