KEEPING EDUCATION

affordable

“Whether it’s welding or nursing, so many of today’s professions require advanced knowledge and training. SCC provides high quality education and training at an affordable price.” – Amy Lewis, city clerk/treasurer, and member of the SCC Foundation Board

Former Mayor of Cottleville Stephen Kochanski Scholarship is making a difference.

Memorial Scholarship Helps Residents Live, Work and Play With a nod of respect to its first mayor and a strategic look to the community’s future, a scholarship was established in 2014 by Cottleville leadership to help residents pursue higher education at St. Charles Community College. Today the memory of Former Mayor of Cottleville Steve Kochanski (1956-2014), who believed in education, is kept alive by the students who will bring future success to the city. He was instrumental in getting the new community college district to construct the permanent campus in Cottleville. Scott Lewis, who was City Administrator and Police Chief at the time of Kochanski’s passing, proposed the idea. Mayor Jim Hennessey and Aldermen Don Buchheit, Marie Mannino, Bob Ronkoski and John Stiles unanimously approved.

Biology students are getting their hands dirty, helping discover life-saving antibiotics in the process. It’s part of the Tiny Earth project, a network built on crowd-sourcing antibiotic discovery, that enlists students all over the world to take samples of soil and search for organisms or molecules with antibiotic properties which could later be developed into life-saving drugs. Monica Hall-Woods, Ph.D., professor of biology, is spearheading the project and was awarded a Foundation-funded grant to help her effort. “As part of the network, students are searching for new antibiotics produced by soil bacteria.” said Hall-Woods, “The handson work is ‘discovery-based,’ meaning instead of spending their time in the lab repeating experiments in which the outcomes are well-known, students are participating in literally ground-breaking work.”

SUPPORTING

students Today and tomorrow.

Building for the Future SCC offers numerous degree and certificate options that enable students to become career-ready after graduation, including in healthcare. Thanks to a $1.5 million MoExcels grant, renovations are underway at the Dardenne Creek Campus. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between healthcare, nutrition and agriculture at the facility. The improvements will enhance and expand the nursing, allied health and health occupation classrooms. Additionally, a dedicated culinary arts and brewing lab facility will be completed this year, establishing new credit and non-credit opportunities for area residents. The agriculture program has utilized the surrounding land for crops and will soon add a greenhouse to use in its curriculum. Meanwhile, on the main campus, St. Charles Community College welcomed students to live on campus for the first time in our history. Establishing a unique public/ private partnership, SCC worked with a local developer to build the Campus Lake Apartments on campus. The developer funded the entire project and will maintain the property at no cost to the college. The complex is exclusive to SCC students.

“As a community, we have been able to rise to the challenges this year, showing ingenuity, determination and grace. We are thankful for what we have, and we will continue to work together to meet the needs of our students, both now and in the future.” – Barbara R. Kavalier, Ph.D., SCC president

Helping Students With the New Normal The COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges in the Spring 2020 semester for students, staff and faculty, including the adaptation of moving from campus to the virtual space. During this unprecedented period, the SCC Foundation Board unanimously approved $25,000 of unrestricted funds to help meet the technology needs for our campus community, including laptops and internet hot spots. Because of your generosity, SCC was able to move forward and learning was able to continue.

STAYCONNECTED LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SCC AT STCHAS.EDU • SCC named one of the best “Returns on Investment” in Missouri among two-year colleges • Missouri State, SCC enter partnership to create Occupational Therapy Assistant bachelor’s degree • SCC establishes innovative practical nursing partnership with local healthcare provider

Rebuilding SCC’s Student Emergency Fund The SCC Foundation began efforts to rebuild its Emergency Fund. Providing one-time financial assistance to students in crisis who are in need of necessities to help them complete their classes, this fund was set up through the SCC Foundation in 2011 with gifts from individuals and businesses. Students apply through SCC’s Office of Student Life and funds are paid directly to the service provider. Over the years this fund has been well-used. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many of our students’ lives, adding to the need, which recently has impacted the fund tremendously.

GRADUATES TODAY,

leaders tomorrow You don’t have to go far to go far.

Rich Loughridge, 2020 Distinguished Alumnus With an interest in helping others to make wise financial decisions, Rich Loughridge co-founded Trademark Real Estate where he has led by example as the top sales agent since the company’s inception in 2011. When Rich was first getting started with his education, it was a theater scholarship that brought him to SCC. “At the time I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do and it was up to me to pay for my own education.” A number of professors made an impact, especially Pam Cilek, Lynne Snyder, Debbie Phillips, and Hal Berry. “Each of those instructors had such a positive impact on my life and in my level of self-confidence. They were all vital in helping me realize that I did have a lot in me, and that I shouldn’t limit any expectations I have for myself. That meant so much to me then and still resonates with me to this day,” he said. In his business he often sees people who are not financially able to purchase a home due to student loans or other types of debt. “When you start at community college you can prevent some of those problems before they start and still be on the same level as any third year student when you go to a university.” Rich received an associate degree from SCC in 2004 and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Lindenwood University in 2010 while working full-time. He earned his Missouri Real Estate License in 2005. He is on the board of directors for Act Two Theatre in St. Peters and serves on the SCC Alumni Council.

“This community college has a rock star lineup of educators,” Rich said. “I felt like the professors actually cared about me and my success and didn’t treat me like just another 10

student on a chart.”

MEETBEATRICE December 2019 graduate, scholarship recipient and future nurse.

Beatrice came to St. Charles Community College hoping to become a force for change. That’s why she enrolled in the nursing program. More than just an interest, a career in nursing had always been a dream for her. “Where I come from, there is a lack of healthcare,” she explained, ”and that motivated me to go into the medical field.” Having worked in another career for years, SCC was a second chance for Beatrice to pursue what she loved. “One day, I hope to help others achieve their goals,” she said, “the same way SCC helped me.” After graduating in December 2019, Beatrice began her new career at SSM as a registered nurse. She admits she’s not done learning yet. She hopes to earn her bachelor’s degree at a four-year university.

Good Things Happen “Being able to work with a great organization that is fully dedicated to students and helping them transform their lives is very rewarding. Growing up, my parents instilled in me to always give back. My mom would volunteer and my dad participated in many charitable organizations, educational institutions and political organizations. I came to realize that paying it forward not only gives you a good feeling that you are helping someone, but also that it tends to come back around. Good things happen. I believe a college education teaches you the skills you need in your chosen career and how to interact with coworkers. Education also can give you more job opportunities, lifelong friendships and networking opportunities.” –Chuck Pilliod Chuck retired as CFO at Krey Distributing in October 2019 after 14 years and continues to assist there as a consultant. He previously held leadership positions at PriceWaterhouse, Peabody and Purcell Tire, among many career accomplishments. He is a Certified Public Accountant and has both a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in international business. Chuck has served on the SCC Foundation Board for 11 years, currently as Treasurer. He lives in Lake St. Louis and has two grown children and five grandchildren. For nearly three decades Krey Distributing, an Anheuser-Busch wholesaler, has been helping students through support of the St. Charles Community College Foundation, along with many other charitable organizations and customers in four counties (St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren and Montgomery).

Using your gifts to transform the lives of students is a wonderful cause, and one that I am proud to have been a part of for many years. Many students need a hand up to help them reach their goals so they can transfer to a university or start a career. Getting access to all the resources available at SCC comes when someone gives them the opportunity to attend. We hope you’ll share the examples in this report with others so they too will understand how gifts through the SCC Foundation help to fill these needs. With scholarships, students are able to pay for their tuition and books. With academic enhancements, instructors get access to the equipment and technology they need to facilitate teaching and learning. Thank you for all you do to make a difference to our students. Your support helps to keep a high-quality education available to students in our community. Many thanks,

Scott Liebel SCC Foundation Board president
