Keeping education affordable Helen and Paul Schnare Scholarship is one of many making a difference
NEXT GENERATION CONTINUES SCHNARES’ ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ary Stodden witnessed first-hand the love her parents, Helen and Paul Schnare, had for education, the tenacity they showed in helping to establish SCC in its early days and the continued support they provided to SCC over the years. The lessons she learned while they were alive about helping others in need shaped who she has become today. That’s why Mary continues to give to the endowed scholarship today. She is determined to carry on her parents' legacy by ensuring an education is affordable for future generations.

It was that same love for education driving the Schnares’ efforts at the college that also inspired all three of their own children to get master’s degrees and to become educators. Mary’s master’s degree is in library science. Her career as a librarian culminated at St. Charles High School, where she served her students and her community for 26 years before retiring in 2014 to pursue additional passions.
QUICK FACTS: HELEN AND PAUL SCHNARE H elen Schnare, a former English teacher at St. Charles High School, was active on early citizen committees to research the feasibility of establishing a new community college. The Schnares allowed the college’s first president, Dr. Donald D. Shook, to use their home for office space for a few months while the college looked for various office and classroom sites. P aul Schnare, a retired auditor at the time, was elected to the first SCC Board of Trustees in 1986 and helped select the current site for the permanent campus in 1992.
Helen served on the SCC Foundation Board from 1994-95. F ollowing Paul’s death in 1997, Helen established one of the first scholarships, which has grown to $70,000 to date. I n 1998, Helen served as the keynote speaker at the college’s 10th commencement. I n 2007, the library located in SCC’s Learning Resource Center was named the Paul and Helen Schnare Library. elen died in 2013. Mary is celebrating her parents’ legacy by H continuing to give to the endowed scholarship.

MEET SAR A, 2014 HELEN AND PAUL SCHNARE SCHOL A RSHIP RECIPIEN T Sara struggled with her classes at the age of 19 and decided to put college on the back burner. It wasn’t until her 30s, and after she and her husband had a daughter, that Sara decided she wanted to go back to school and show her daughter that with hard work and determination she can do anything. “I can't even express my gratitude for the scholarship,” Sarah said. “It really helped me and kept me positive during my journey. It gave me a second chance.” Sara graduated from SCC in 2015. She currently does mapping work for a nearby county assessor’s office. She plans to get a bachelor’s degree and hopes to eventually pursue a master’s degree.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY HELPS STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Students with disabilities will benefit from additional equipment, including LiveScribe 2GB Echo smartpens that record lectures and play them back at the point where the students took the notes. Extra copies of Natural Reader software, which converts text to spoken words, have been added to computers on campus.
CHEMISTRY EQUIPMENT ENHANCES QUALIT Y EDUCATION New spectrophotometers will replace aging measurement equipment, allowing chemistry students more access to equipment they will use in their future careers. The equipment uses light to test concentrations.
4 2 MOLECUL AR MODEL CHALLENGES STUDENTS A giant-size molecular model kit will provide a three-dimensional structure to help students understand concepts in chemistry.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND L ANGUAGE STUDENTS GET NEEDED RESOURCES Students taking non-credit classes through SCC’s Adult Education and Literacy Department are taking advantage of new electronic translators as they study English. Sometimes up to 15 different languages are spoken by students in a class, and the translators can help them to understand the teacher. Students taking ESL credit classes are benefiting from expanded access to instructors through new workshops. The workshops allow smaller groups of students to work closely with instructors to improve their grammar and review for exams.

1 STORYBOOK WALK NOW PART OF SCC CAMPUS WALKING PATHS Anyone who enjoys children’s books can now read a story while they walk along the beautiful campus walking path. The new Storybook Walk was made possible by a partnership between St. Charles Community College and its Foundation, along with the St. Charles City-County Library District and its Foundation. Along the free half-mile outdoor Storybook Walk are the pages of an entire children’s book mounted to reading stations. Families and visitors are invited to return each month for a different story. SCC Foundation Board member Dianne Garrison and her husband George brought the idea to reality and volunteer their time to switch out the story each month. NEW MICROPHONES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S THEATRE Budding artists in SCC's Young People’s Theatre are taking advantage of new microphones. They allow the cast, ages 8-19, the ability to produce high-quality performances.
MATH TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCES RECORD TURNOUT On March 7, some 17 area high schools with 128 students competed at the 18th Annual High School Math Tournament – more than double last year’s turnout – in cooperation with the Great Plains Math League. With support from the SCC Foundation, the registration fee was only $1 per student. The event was one of several STEM-related programs held in St. Charles County during STEM Week in March that engaged students in science, technology, engineering and math. 2015
LEGO ROBOTICS TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAIL ABLE TO KIDS As the demand grows for STEM camps, new EV3 LEGO Robotic Engineering Kits will allow more students in the College for All Kids summer program to use the new technology to learn science, technology, engineering and math concepts.

Graduates today, leaders of tomorrow Students and community reap benefits ROB DIXON s the executive director for the Missouri Community College Association, Rob Dixon is giving members and community colleges a powerful voice in Missouri. He was 23 when he completed his service to the U.S. Marine Corps and started taking classes at SCC. Rob's interest in political science was sparked by SCC Professor Joe Hartnett during his Introduction to Business class. After completing an Associate of Arts degree from SCC, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in international and comparative politics and a master’s degree in public administration from Missouri State University.

During his career, Rob led strategic initiatives with both the Hollister and Springfield Area chambers of commerce. Rob's wife Melanie also is an SCC alumna. Both of his parents are U.S. Marine veterans and community college graduates, including his mother, Lea Dixon, SCC Child Development Center lead teacher.
MEET JANELE, SCC A LUM. Janele loves empowering children and families in need through her job as a quality assurance specialist for the Missouri Alliance for Children and Families. With the low cost of tuition, combined with the help of a scholarship from the SCC Foundation, Janele was able to start her education at SCC. After earning her Associate of Arts degree in 2008, she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in social work. She said she felt prepared for a university and considers herself a strong advocate for SCC. She has even brought some of her own students to campus and helped them apply. “I really want to help people, and children are a vulnerable population.”
More than 950 students graduated this year, including 30 who received a scholarship from the SCC Foundation.

CATHERINE WA S A MONG THEM. Catherine grew up on a small family farm. She wondered how she would be able to afford a college education. “Without a scholarship, college would not be a possibility for me.” Catherine graduated with high honors, receiving her Associate of Arts degree at SCC. She plans to transfer to Southeast Missouri State University to major in fashion merchandising.

WHY I GIVE: “I give because I want to help others like me who may have made some bad choices early in life but are seeking to develop themselves. I went from GED to Ph.D. in seven years and wanted to go as far as I could with teaching and publishing.”
DR. BETTY TYREE OSIEK hanks to her husband and mentor, Betty restarted her educational journey in her late 20s – one that included earning a Ph.D. from Washington University. Her love of languages made her an inspirational educator at universities and took her to more than 72 different countries. She has published two books, scholarly papers, articles and translations, as well as bibliographical reviews for the Library of Congress. Betty received several scholarships and fellowships, which made it possible for her to persevere. In return, she wanted to help others. She donated books to the SCC Library, is a member of SCC’s Legacy Society and continues to support the college in many ways. Her path crossed with SCC in 1988 when she was hired to teach Spanish. She also volunteered in the English as a Second Language program for six years and sang with SCC’s choir. Today, she still attends performances and occasionally takes refresher courses. 14

BRENDA HOLLR AH – WHY I GIVE: believe that we should all work as one for the good of all. I believe we should not hold onto our wealth but should pass it on. PRESIDENTS CL ASSIC GOLF SCR AMBLE
More than 1,150 friends and neighbors packed the St. Charles Community College campus for the sixth annual Rhythm and Ribs fundraiser on June 4. Ticket sales, raffle and donations raised more than $41,500.
136 golfers came together to raise more than $41,000 at the 18th annual Presidents Classic Golf Scramble on Sept. 29.
Dr. Zhivegas headlined the event. Rib vendors included Mannino’s Market, Ethyl’s Smokehouse and Saloon and Stumpy’s House of Bar-B-Que. Guests also enjoyed gourmet nachos, hot dogs and veggie burgers by Quintessential Catering. Drinks included Anheuser-Busch products by Krey Distributing, soda by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, lemonade by Red Robin, water by Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles and wine by Terra Firma USA.
