KEEPING EDUCATION affordable Maria Espinoza Presidential Leadership Award making a difference
Memorial scholarship honors students who give back Sergio and Sherry Espinoza learned the true meaning of giving from their daughter. When they lost Maria in 2015, the couple decided to continue her spirit of helping others by trying to become as involved at SCC as she was and by establishing a scholarship that honors students who put in extra time and give to others in the same way Maria did. “When Maria talked about having meetings with the college president, we realized that she was having a very positive experience at SCC,” Sergio said. Due to a health condition, Maria chose to start at SCC because it was close to home. She had plans to transfer to Truman to study psychology. She received the Psychology Student of the Year Award and served as president of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges. Maria earned her diploma in 2015 but passed away before she was able to receive it. Sergio Espinoza is a bilingual teacher in the Jennings School District and Sherry Espinoza, M.S.N., R.N., is a nurse educator at Applied Technology Adult Education and a member of the SCC Foundation Board. They live in St. Peters and have seven children. 4
“Maria was a giver, so it is meaningful to us to help other students and to give back to the college she loved so much.” – Sherry Espinoza Pictured: Sergio and Sherry Espinoza

He said he is looking forward to helping people learn about their health. As a first-generation college student, he said the science faculty really made a difference in his experience at SCC, guiding him and helping him to become successful in his courses. “They made me feel like SCC was a home, versus just being here for classes,” Drew said.

Micah Humphreys, associate professor, teaches students that honeybee pollination is vital to agriculture, so they learn the connection between the natural world and food we rely on as humans.
Beehives teach students agriculture Your gifts supported the addition of beehives to SCC’s new Agriculture Department. Students installed functional and healthy beehives within walking distance of campus.
“The hands-on experience goes beyond what they can learn in the current campus lab setting,” said Micah Humphreys, associate professor of agriculture. SCC launched the agriculture program in the fall of 2018 to help fill a gap in an area of the state that lacks educational opportunities in the industry. Students can earn an Associate of Science degree, which teaches the foundations in plant and soil
science, animal science, natural resources and the economics of agricultural production to prepare for a variety of jobs or transfer to another institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. SCC was awarded the $222,269 grant from the National Science Foundation to support the development and implementation of this new agriculture program. The funding extends from Sept. 1, 2018, to Aug. 31, 2021.

PLANNING FOR THE future Developing our local workforce
Scholarships and gifts support workforce and technical training New scholarships and gifts from partners in our community are helping to keep costs down for students as SCC continues to enhance and expand its Workforce Development Programs. • VSM Abrasives gave scholarship funds for students studying welding and donated equipment for use in the welding classroom. • SCC Workforce Development started the Pat Cody Welding and Manufacturing Scholarship in memory of the instructor who helped launch SCC’s program. • The Institute for Supply Management – St. Louis established an ISM St. Louis Founders Scholarship. • The St. Louis #38 NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) Scholarship Fund established the St. Louis NAWIC Scholarship. SCC’s technology credit programs covering welding, supply chain logistics and manufacturing, are among those helping to meet the demand for skilled workers in our region. 8
“Any time we are able to come together with workforce partners to help strengthen the community, it’s an exciting thing. We work hard to meet the business and industry needs with each project we take on, and each new venture is just another opportunity for our community.” – Barbara R. Kavalier, Ph.D., SCC president
STAYCONNECTED Tech-savvy teaching and learning
With some start-up funds from the Foundation, faculty members are learning how to engage students through modern technology. By creating a little healthy competition, SCC’s Online and e-Learning Department is challenging teachers to become more tech-savvy in their own classrooms. The first proposals were selected this year based on level of innovation and ability to strengthen student learning. Stipends are awarded to those who successfully complete this “FIT (Fueling Innovation Technology) Academy.” Selected participants have access to training and support while they work toward implementation.

Rex McKanry, associate professor of computer science, was one of four faculty members selected. He plans to implement collaborative, web-based tools so students can learn to code while working as a team. In line with the college’s strategic plan, this program is an example of one way college leaders are working to develop people and inspire innovation. 9
Faith in SCC
STUDENTS TODAY, leaders tomorrow You don’t have to go far to go far
The 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award goes to Sally A. Faith (left), because she has devoted much of her life to moving St. Charles and St. Charles County forward. As part of that, her persistence and support for the college from the very earliest days all the way to the present, has helped thousands of students to pursue a college education. Sally helped pass the ballot initiative that established SCC and was elected to SCC’s first Board of Trustees, serving from 1986-1995. She was the director of development for the SCC Foundation from 1997 to 2005 and was elected an Emeritus Foundation board member in 2009. She took classes at SCC, her son Howard received an associate degree and her grandson Lance is currently attending SCC. Sally set up a scholarship in 2003 for returning learners in memory of her mother, Florence Killian. It is a family legacy. She recently retired after serving two terms as mayor of the City of St. Charles, 2011-2015 and 2015-2019. She previously represented St. Charles County (District 15) in the Missouri House of Representatives and served as chair and vice-chair of the St. Charles County Council District 5 from 1995-2004. She serves on many boards of directors for organizations in our community, and she lives in St. Charles, Missouri. “Sally brings a positive can-do attitude into every challenge she faces,” said Pam Cilek, SCC Board of Trustees president. “We are quite proud of her and grateful for the faith she has had in SCC.”
“We cannot ever give up. We have to keep moving forward.” 10
-Sally A. Faith
Strengthening our community Thanks in part to your support and a number of resources and caring individuals at SCC, many students go on to become nurses, teachers, engineers, computer programmers and other professionals in our community.

THANK YOU for your support
Why I Give: Mike Lissner Education has always been at the top of my list for charitable giving because it leads to growth and success for people living in our community, including the children and grandchildren of our employees and clients. Learning math is especially a key skill, and one that I focus on because I believe it is very important now and will be even more important in the future, in most careers. There are many opportunities at the community college for students to learn math and to get the critical skills they need to transform their lives. It is a path to success. By giving to SCC we are able to help people to help themselves. When I was young – the youngest eight – I learned from my parents that we all have different gifts and that we should use those gifts to help others. Mike is a partner at Acropolis Investment Management and has served as a member of the SCC Foundation Board for 15 years. He lives in Lake Saint Louis and has two grown children, Luke and Guinevere.

Why I Give: Teresa Lovan In my job as cashier, I see a lot of how it really is for students. Sometimes they can barely afford something to eat, so I can imagine it must be really hard to pay for tuition and books. I see students on happy and sad days, and I hear about what they’re going through, from a car breaking down to losing pets or loved ones. I give because I like the way it feels to give and because I know I am helping the students. Teresa Lovan has worked for SCC as a cashier for 17 years and has been a member of the ESP for eight years.
