A tree planting ceremony in recognition of the college’s 25th anniversary will kick-off the event at 10 a.m. on the Campus Plaza. The ceremony will last about 30 minutes and will celebrate the accomplishments of the college and provide a glimpse into its plans for a successful, sustainable future.
In Memoriam The college was notified of the recent deaths of two of its students and one alumna: Philaura Askegard, of Lake St. Louis, and Elaine A. Goltz, of St. Peters, were current students at SCC. Trudi Shannon was a graduate of the Child Care & Early Education program in May 2010 and was honored as an Outstanding Graduate. Our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and loved ones.
Winning streaks, standout players highlight 2012 season The SCC Cougars men’s baseball and women’s softball teams may not have finished the 2012 season the way they wanted to, but they still have something to be proud of: their sophomore leaders. The SCC men’s baseball team finished the season 12-36. Despite a seven-game winning streak in April, they lost their last eight games, including two in postseason play. “We lacked a few key ingredients this season,” said Chris Gober, head coach. “But we are bringing back some good sophomores next year and are looking to rebuild the team.” The team will certainly miss sophomore shortstop Jimmy Obermark, who was named the Region XVI Defensive Player of the Year, and will be nominated for the National Defensive Player of the Year. The women’s softball team also had an impressive ninegame winning streak in March, but fell short in the Region XVI tournament, with a postseason record of 2-2, and an overall record of 28-24. Individually, the players set six new SCC softball records, and broke into the top five of 12 different school records. Standout freshman outfielder/first baseman Brittany Edelen was ninth in the nation for stolen bases with 48, and she received All-Regional and All-Conference First-Team honors. Tarah Moutray, sophomore third baseman, was also named to All-Regional First-Team, as well as All-Conference Honorable Mention. All-Regional Honorable Mention players include Becca Zalabak, Sarah Vanhooser, Kelli Costello and Shea Dean. Costello and Vanhooser also received All-Conference First-Team honors.

Sunlight streams in over the heads of the 2012 class of SCC graduates during the 24th annual commencement, which took place in the College Center gymnasium on May 12. During the ceremony, the SCC Foundation recognized LCDR Tina M. Cox of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith addresses SCC graduates More than 735 receive community college degrees and certificates St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith was the keynote speaker at SCC’s 24th annual commencement on May 12, which celebrated the accomplishments of more than 735 graduates of the class of 2012. Faith, who was one of SCC’s first Board of Trustees members, serving 1986-1995, and was director of development for the SCC Foundation from 1997-2005, congratulated graduates on their many accomplishments. She also reflected on the early days of the college and its growth over the past 25 years. “Each of you has a different story, a different path, a different reason for being here and graduating with the class of 2012 today,” Faith said. “You may not realize this, but along
the way, you’ve set an important precedent, a benchmark and a quality example for all who will grace the halls of this college in the future.” “In the first graduating class – wait for it – there were a total of three graduates,” Faith said. “Today, by comparison, more than 735 students are eligible to graduate today.” Also addressing a crowd of nearly 1,500 graduates, faculty, relatives and friends was student representative Jill Browder, of St. Peters, an Associate of Arts degree graduate with a 4.0 grade point average.
