Based on the novel by
JOHN STEINBECK Adapted by
FRANK GALATI Directed by Hal Berry
AUDITIONS 7 p.m. Aug. 19-20 Callbacks – 7 p.m. Aug. 21 FAB Theater
Winner of the 1990 Tony Award for Best Play, The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the Joad family shattered by the depths of the Great Depression of the 1930s. They and millions of Americans struggled to survive the national crisis. Steinbeck’s message is that of universal oneness, a concept very alien in today’s culture. One of the play’s characters, Casy, an ex-priest is quoted: “I been thinkin’ maybe all men
got one big soul everybody’s a part of … .” The story is told with music of the Depression’s famous folk artist, Woody Guthrie, vivid and contrasting lighting and an ensemble dramatizing the movement west of hundreds of thousands to find a better life in California. Originally produced on the Broadway Stage by The Shubert Organization, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Suntory International Corporation and Jujamcyn Theatres Corporation.
7:30 p.m. Nov. 20-21; 8 p.m. Nov. 22-23; 2 p.m. Nov. 24 School Matinee: 10 a.m. Nov. 21 (Middle School and Above)
This play is a classic American comedy/drama that’s every bit as touching, warm and witty today as when it debuted on Broadway in 1979. The story concerns retired couple Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend every summer at their home on Golden Pond, Maine. This year, their adult daughter and her fiancé visit, bringing along his 13-year-old son. The turbulent
relationship between father and daughter, the generation gap between young and old and the difficulties, joys and fears facing a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage all combine to give this play a unique insight into the modern family. In the end, they all learn from one another. Produced by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Winner of the 1979 Tony Award winner for Best Play, The Elephant Man is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the 19th century. A horribly deformed young man, victim of rare skin and bone diseases, he has become the star freak attraction in traveling side shows. Found abandoned and helpless, he is admitted to London’s prestigious
Whitechapel Hospital. Under the care of celebrated young physician Frederick Treves, Merrick is introduced to London society and slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati only to be denied his ultimate dream, to become a man like any other. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

August 1940, New York. Struggling and opportunistic writer Everett Gardner is given the chance to make a mark in the still infant comic book industry. All he has to do is create a hero. But creating a real hero turns out to be much more difficult than he expects. While badgered by a desperate publisher and partnered with an uncooperative artist, the task
might prove to be impossible – especially with distraction of the artist’s intriguing young wife. But heroes can arise in the most unexpected places … Next Year’s Man of Steel is a play about creativity, collaboration and everyday courage. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
7:30 p.m. July 22-24; 8 p.m. July 25-26; 2 p.m. July 27 (Middle School and Above) Based on the 1988 film of the same name, this energetic musical centers on two competing con men living on the French Riviera. At first, the suave and experienced Lawrence Jameson takes the less sophisticated rookie, Freddy, under his wing. But soon, Freddy tries to compete directly with
Lawrence. The competition comes to a peak when they agree that the first man to extract $50,000 from the female heiress, Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and more than a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s
one on hand … and his name is Shrek. Full of wonderful songs, great dancing and fun scenery, SHREK THE MUSICAL is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone! Shrek is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
