The Unsinkable SCC Library by Julia Wilbers The Spring 2016 semester got off to a great start here in the LRC! We love when students come back and are ready to start their semester off strong. However, we hit a bit of a snag a few weeks ago. In the late evening of Tuesday, February 23, a water main break behind the library resulted in considerable flooding of the library’s first floor. Fortunately, most of the damage done was cosmetic, and thanks to Housekeeping, Maintenance, and the LRC staff, we were able to keep the Reference collection (housed on the first floor), the computers, and the printers safe from harm. continued on p. 3

Getting ready for April showers at the Lego table
We know it’s a long trek from the Social Sciences Building to the library, so through the end of April a librarian will be available to provide research help to students in the SSB Lounge near the auditorium daily, Monday through Thursday, 10:0011:00 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m. We are excited to show you all of the high quality sources that can be accessed online without even going to the library. Look for us next to the “Lucy the Librarian” sign!
Oscar-Nominated DVDs at the Library Several Oscarnominated films are now available on DVD in the library, including The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room, and Straight Outta Compton. These films are very popular, so go to the SCC Library Catalog to reserve your copy today! Coming soon: The Danish Girl, Spotlight, The Revenant, Son of Saul, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Betta Check This Out: Brutus is in the House by Rebecca Klemme-Eliceiri SCC librarian Theresa Flett recently saw a vibrant betta and thought, “he will save the Reference Desk from its fishless existence!” Brutus has since provided library users and staff alike with a useful focal point for deep research contemplation. He enjoys his role at the library, and treasures the time he spends with people. Still, at some points he has thought, “I would really like to leave my mark on the library.” We don’t know what precisely he means by this, but hope it had nothing to do with the recent library flooding...
continued from p. 1 Due to the flooding the LRC had to undergo a fair amount of repair. Most of the damage involved drywall and carpet and while it was handled quickly in the grand scheme of things, it did result in most of the first floor becoming inaccessible. We lost access to printing, first floor computers, and most of our group study space. The library’s second floor was still available, and we saw a lot more students taking advantage of the quiet study space that the second floor provides (if you haven’t used it before, come check it out – it’ll become your favorite place to study on campus!). While it pained us to turn students away who needed to print, we’re fortunate that our campus has two other computer labs (in the ACE Center and the Technology building) that could accommodate our students. As of Thursday, March 10, the library’s first floor was re-opened for student use. Thanks to LRC staff, Maintenance, Housekeeping, and our IT Support things were up and running, and it was almost like nothing had happened. It was great to see students come back in and head to the computers and first floor study space. There are few things we enjoy more than seeing our students back in the library. We’re here to offer you the space and resources you need to succeed at SCC and beyond. photos by Ben Munson
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we got back to normal.

Students continue to impress with their creative talents at the Lego table. In December, in conjunction with the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, students participated in a Star Wars Lego Contest. First and second place winners (shown here) received Fandango gift cards to see the new movie.
