1 Lunch and learn –

Using the latest technology in science makes learning more exciting and successful. The introduction of Vernier LabQuest equipment at SCC started about two years ago with six handheld devices. Professors like Stacey Thater are able to “teach the way science is used in the field.” These portable machines utilize field-specific modules such as spectrographs, oxygen sensors and probes to instantly record data that can be saved to a flash drive, computer or shown to the class through a projector. “These devices allow much more time for learning, versus strictly collecting data,” Thater said. “Students now have the ability to see instant results and start to observe how they can be applied.” The SCC Foundation funded six additional devices this year, allowing more students than ever to move from class engagement to field application.

4 Making drawings come to life – With the help of an innovative machine called the MakerBot, SCC’s Computer-Aided Design students can now watch their drawings literally come to life. At a fraction of the cost of a classic 3D printer (nearly $40,000), the MakerBot was purchased with a $1,000 grant from the SCC Foundation. The “bot,” which melts small strands in layers to create a 3D model, plastic of arrived on campus in late October – as a kit with many pieces. The SCC Engineering Club, with the help of Professor David Niermann, accepted the challenge of putting it together it. “Assembling the kit was, itself, a unique learning experience,” Niermann said. “Students used their skills in electrical wiring, woodworking and computer programming to bring this amazing machine to life.” Access to this equipment makes SCC’s CAD and pre-engineering programs a cut above and students more qualified to enter the workforce.

The second annual Rhythm & Ribs (R&R) event was another huge success! Despite a few rain drops, 1,100 people got to Eat, Drink & Rock the night away ... for Education! Party goers savored ribs from Ethyl’s Smokehouse and Mannino’s Market and enjoyed chicken from our new neighbor Chick-fil-A ... all while listening to the sweet sounds of the St. Charles West Jazz Ensemble and Smash Band.

Highlights included an activity area with face painting, games and crafts, as well as a raffle table with prizes like a BBQ grill and accessories, Cardinals tickets, concert tickets and much more. This year’s event raised more than $43,000. All proceeds will benefit scholarships and academic enhancements. Special thanks goes to the remarkable SCC staff, event sponsors and more than 150 volunteers for making the event

possible, to the entertainment who kept the crowd dancing and to vendors like, Dunkin Donuts, Quintessential Catering, Krey Distributing, Red Robin & Terra Firma, USA who nourished the party goers into the night. Sixth grade science teacher, John Hall III of Orchard Farm, was presented the sixth annual Distinguished Alumni Award at this year’s commencement. Hall decided at age 29 to return to college and explains, “Had it not been for SCC, college would not have been an option.” It was a “mind-expanding moment” he had during a physics class at SCC that made him realize his purpose and change his major from pre-engineering to education. “My teacher, Stacey Thater, had the ability to see the big picture and the interconnected-
