Another option – distance learning classes – can start up to three weeks after regular 16-week classes and offer instruction on your terms. Telecourses, teleweb, and online courses are equal in value to the credit given to 16-week classes. Look for these courses on page 41. You will find classes at St. Charles Community College suited to your schedule.

ON THE WEB
Register online at www.stchas.edu.
Current and returning SCC students may register online by logging on to www.stchas.edu/connect, and follow the directions for real-time, online registration.
IN PERSON NOTE: If you do NOT have a high school diploma or a GED certificate and you wish to register for classes, you must take the Academic Skills Assessment. STEP 1 If you are a first-time student who has never completed college credits and who plans to take 6 credit hours or more, you are required to have a counselor’s signature. If you are planning on requesting Federal Financial Aid, now is the time to apply in the Financial Assistance Office. You may also be required to complete the Academic Skills Assessment in order to enroll. (Take the assessment before you make a counseling appointment.) Call the Student Development secretary at 636-922-8241 to schedule an appointment with a counselor. All students are encouraged to see a counselor. STEP 2 Pick up registration materials or call 636-922-8000 to have them mailed to you. Printable forms are available on the college Web site: www.stchas.edu. Read and complete all necessary forms. If you are taking the Academic Skills Assessment, Complete the application for Admission available at www.stchas.edu/admissions. (You must complete the application 2 business days prior to testing.) STEP 3 Select the appropriate courses you wish to take, and check to see which course section numbers correspond with the times/days/locations you prefer. (If you register for math or English courses, the Academic Skills Assessment is required. For details, visit www.stchas. edu/connect and click on “Academic Advising.”) STEP 4 Examine your selection of courses to see if you have met all prerequisites for the courses. Courses that have prerequisites and corequisites are flagged with P/C in
the class schedule. Prerequisites and corequisites for all courses are listed in the online catalog in the course description section. It is your responsibility to provide documentation that all prerequisites have been met before being allowed to register. All students taking English and math courses are required to make a grade of “C” or better in prerequisite courses before progressing to the next course in sequence. STEP 5 Bring the completed forms to the Admissions Office at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville and proceed to register, or bring them to your counseling appointment. Regular registration hours are 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday.

Proof of residency must accompany the address change submission. Course Fees – Only a small number of courses have specific course fees. These are listed in the class schedule portion of this publication if applicable.
SPRING 2011 CREDIT CLASS SCHEDULE – 3
Registration and Tuition Tuition/Fees (CONTINUED) Telecourse/TeleWeb Fee – $38 per course. Book fees are additional. Returned Checks – $15. Senior Discount – Any Missouri resident 65 years of age or older on or before Aug. 1 of an academic year may enroll in SCC college credit courses on a tuitionfree scholarship (does not include course fees, books or materials) based on available class space after tuitionpaying students have enrolled. Proof of age is required at the time of registration. All tuition-free courses may be taken on either a credit or audit basis. All course prerequisites must be met prior to registration. *Tuition rates are subject to change at any time.
Missouri Returning Heroes Act To comply with the Missouri Returning Heroes Act, tuition charged to combat veterans will be limited to fifty dollars per credit hour. Eligibility is determined, for any program leading to an undergraduate certificate, or an associate or baccalaureate degree. A “combat veteran” is any person who served in armed combat after September 11, 2001, who was a Missouri resident when first entering the military, and who was discharged from military service under honorable conditions. If you would like to apply, please submit a copy of your most recent DD-214 (long form) and the Returning Heroes Education Act Application to the Enrollment Services Department located in the Administrative Building, room 1113. Your documentation will be reviewed to determine if you meet the criteria to be considered for reduced tuition. The Office of Enrollment Services will determine the amount, if any, that your tuition will be reduced.
Active Duty Military Tuition Charges To comply with the Higher Education Opportunity Act, SCC will charge in-state tuition rates for any member of the armed forces who is on active duty for a period of more than 30 days and whose domicile or permanent duty station is in Missouri. Eligibility is also extended to the service member’s spouse or dependents. The in-state rate will apply so long as the service member, their spouse or dependent is continuously enrolled at SCC, notwithstanding a subsequent change in the permanent duty station of the service member to a location outside of Missouri.
How to Pay for Classes NOTE: If you register on the Web, you may pay online, by mail or in person. If You Pay Online (via the Web) SCC accepts MasterCard, Visa, or Discover credit cards. NOTE: A login ID and password are required. Visit www.stchas.edu/connect for more information. If You Pay by Mail Pay by check – Do not send cash (for your protection). Make checks payable to SCC.
Write your social security number or student ID number and phone number on all payments to ensure your account is credited. Write the student’s name on payment if different from the name on the check. Mail to: SCC, Attn.: Cashier, 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Dr., Cottleville, MO 63376-2865. Your cancelled check is your receipt. Checks must be for the exact total and must be received by the Cashier’s Office by announced deadline. Two-party checks will not be accepted. Returned checks may be turned over to a collection agency, and you may be removed from classes ($15 fee charged for each returned check). Pay by credit card – SCC accepts MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit cards. Follow the “Pay by check” procedure, plus include type of card, name (exactly as it appears on card), 16-digit account number, expiration date and the amount you wish to pay. If You Pay in Person Pay by check – Follow the same procedure as if paying by mail, except present your check in person to the Cashier’s Office by the appropriate deadlines or deposit your payment in the drop box next to the Cashier’s Office. Pay with cash – Cash payment is accepted in person for classes. Do not send cash through the mail. Pay by credit card – If you pay by credit card, have your credit card ready. Alternative Payment Plan (Nelnet) The college has contracted with a “payment plan” vendor for students who wish to make extended payments. For more information, visit the SCC Website at www.stchas.edu/financial_aid_tuition/tuition_fees, and click on Alternative Payment Plan. A separate enrollment must be completed online for each available term on or before the “all fees due” date for that term. You will be assessed a fee for this service. A small portion of this fee is remitted to SCC to cover administrative expenses.
Financial Assistance Grants, loans, scholarships and part-time employment are available to students who qualify. Most awards are based on need, require maintenance of a minimum grade point average, and are made for one academic year. For complete details on requirements, see the college catalog. To be considered for loans, grants or on-campus jobs, apply for admission to SCC and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To avoid having to pay fees up-front for the spring semester, students must have filed their FAFSA by Nov. 1 and must have completed their financial aid file by Dec 1.
Veteran’s Financial Assistance SCC is approved for veterans education by the Missouri State Board of Education. Veterans who wish to secure educational benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights should contact the Financial Assistance Office at 636-922-8268 for more information.

How to Read the Credit Class Schedule How to Read the Schedule At the top of each page of the class schedule is a line of column headings. Here’s what each heading means: Course Section # – The course number consists of three parts: • Three-letter prefix for the subject area. • Three-digit course number. (Use this number to look up the course description in the college catalog.) • Two-digit section number. Several sections (classes) of the same course may be offered each semester. • Sections occurring within mini-mesters (other than distance learning classes) will have three digit section numbers. The first digit will denote which mini-mester the class is in. For distance learning classes, special section numbers indicate the following: The letter indicates type of course:
H – Hybrid (Course is partially on campus and partially online); N – Online; T – Telecourse; W – TeleWeb. Course – Course name may be abbreviated to fit the space. See the online college catalog for the full course name. Credit – Credit hours are based on the number of hours per week the class meets and the length of the term. Days – Days refers to the days of the week the class is held. The following letters represent each day of the week classes are held: M – Monday T – Tuesday W – Wednesday R – Thursday F – Friday S – Saturday For example: MWF means the class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; TR means the class meets Tuesday and Thursday.
Evening and Saturday classes are listed in bold and color. Room – The room number and building where the class meets. (See the inside back cover for a campus map.) Distance Learning Courses Earn College Credit at Home Who should take a distance learning class? Distance learning classes are not easier than traditional classes. They have the same expectations and are equivalent to classes taught on campus. Courses that do not require weekly classroom attendance require a significant amount of self-discipline. Successful students are generally: highly motivated, independent, active learners, have good reading and organizational skills, can adapt to new learning environments, have discipline to study without external reminders, and have computer literacy skills (may need to use e-mail, WebCT, etc.). Visit www.stchas.edu/distance and click “Are They Right for Me”? to determine your readiness.
What Is “Distance Learning?” Distance learning classes include online courses, telecourses, and teleweb courses that do not require regular classroom attendance but may require an oncampus orientation, midterm, or final exam. Students use textbooks, complete written assignments, and receive faculty assistance. Distance learning classes are comparable to on-campus classes in credits earned.
More Flexibility for You Distance learning classes offer flexibility for students with full work schedules, people with jobs that require travel or rotating shifts, or those who have parenting responsibilities. Hybrid Classes are partially on campus and partially online. No more than 50% of instruction is on campus.
Some campus meetings may be scheduled for online courses. Students must check the distance learning web site at www.stchas.edu/distance for critical information at least one week prior to the start of the semester. Please call the Distance Learning Office at 636-922-8470 if you have any questions.

SCC STUDY TOURS
Watch for the 2011 tour schedule at www.stchas.edu/studytours. This Spring Break study tour will take you to Puerto Rico, the “Island of Enchantment”, with overnights in the Colonial city of San Juan, and an overnight visit to the historic city of Ponce. Highlights include a day trip to El Yunque, the only rainforest in the U.S., a visit to the world’s largest radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory, a tour of the caverns of Rio Camuy and ample free time to explore or relax in a tropical environment. Optional college credit available: SPN 195 (one credit hour). Call 636-922-8257 for more information.
STUDY TOUR FAQs What is a study tour?
A study tour is a travel experience with specific learning goals. Study tours emphasize experiential learning .and offer both group and self-directed activities that enable learners to explore new territories, languages, and .cultures. Most SCC study tours are offered for optional college credit. Study tours are designed to be both fun .and educational. Our groups enjoy the local cuisine, socialize freely and make use of the local recreational .and cultural resources of the areas that we visit. However, study tours are NOT party trips. If you are looking .for a spring break blitz or summer beach party, you’ll do better to look elsewhere for your travel experience.
Most study tours are available for college credit. For more information, call 636-922-8254 or visit www.stchas.edu/studytours.
What are some advantages of traveling with SCC?
You can usually get a better value for the whole group package than you can by traveling on your own (or .even with another group). You won’t have to worry about driving in a strange area with unfamiliar language .and customs – or when you are tired. There are no worries or hassles about where to stay, .how to get there, or even checking in!
You will have access to a professional guide as well as your SCC escort(s) for help and advice. Itineraries are .designed to maximize your overall experience.
Who is invited?
Everyone! Although college students often participate in our study tours, we have enjoyed the participation .of community members, family and friends from ages 15 to 82. Please seek the permission of the tour leader .for unaccompanied learners under 18 or if you wish to bring children under age 10. SPRING 2011 CREDIT CLASS SCHEDULE – 44
