Impact Report 2014/15 stclarehospice.org.uk Registered Charity No. 1063631

A message from our Chairman and Chief Executive It is 25 years since we cared for our very first patient. Since then, we have supported more than 10,000 patients and their families across West Essex and the borders of East Hertfordshire. The past few years have been a period of great change for St Clare. Our services have grown and we now care for more than 1,500 patients a year. As an organisation, we have been responsive to that change and committed to developing our services for the benefit of local people, continually striving to learn, encompass and embrace ideas and feedback.

Patrick Foster Chairman of Trustees

Despite the many challenges, it is with great pride that we can say the Hospice has never lost sight of the fact that the only reason for its existence is to provide specialist palliative care for those in our community, supporting not only patients but also their relatives and friends. We firmly believe that with the right care, at the right time, in the place of their choice, it is possible for patients and those close to them to feel safe, calm, comforted and more confident to cope with the journey ahead. But it would not be possible for us to do that without the many people who support us in so many ways. We are so grateful to all those who have contributed in some way over the past 25 years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Tanya Curry Chief Executive

Our key achievements We know the majority of people would prefer to be cared for at home, so we expanded our Hospice at Home service to 24 hours, seven days per week.

Giving families the space and time they need to be together is so important, so we were delighted work got underway on the creation of our new ‘Space to Breathe’ family garden.

Our care extends to the close family and friends of the people we look after, so we developed our Patient & Family Support team, which included a team of bereavement volunteers.

We are passionate in the pursuit of excellence and achieving the highest standards in all aspects of our work. We created a new Organisational Development directorate to support our staff and volunteers so they can continue providing the incredible care St Clare is renowned for.

We value the unique contribution and creativity our volunteers bring to St Clare. We have expanded our volunteer team to include ‘clinical volunteers’ specifically supporting the nurses on the Inpatient Unit.

To help generate the vital income we need to raise each and every year to continue our caring work, we opened a Hospice shop in the town of Loughton. St Clare now has eight shops, generating essential funds that enable us to care for more local people.

St Clare Hospice care is...

...about life and living, not just death and dying. The average length of stay for those admitted to our Inpatient Unit was 11 days. One in three in-patients returned home or to another care setting. Our average bed occupancy was 90%. We cared for 203 new patients in our Inpatient Unit. Work got underway on our new ‘Space to Breathe’ family garden, providing families with a beautiful outside space to relax and reflect.

St Clare Hospice care is...

...for people with any lifelimiting illness, not just cancer. More than half of those attending Day Therapy at the Hospice had a diagnosis other than cancer, such as heart failure and circulatory and/or respiratory illnesses. 15% of people receiving Inpatient care had a non-cancer diagnosis, ranging from Motor Neurone Disease to Alzheimer’s Disease. We cared for people with conditions including Huntington’s Disease, GuillainBarre syndrome, asthma and stroke.

More than 50 patients attended our Breathlessness Group where they learnt management techniques. Our occupational therapists made more than 400 phone calls and 50 visits to patients at home. More than 120 people were supported by our bereavement support and counselling service. Our bereavement service conducted 440 face to face counselling sessions. Specially trained bereavement support volunteers were introduced to support those who have lost a loved one.

Two new social workers joined our Patient and Family Support Team to oer practical and emotional support for both patients and their loved ones. We held two ‘All About You’ days giving patients and their carers some extra TLC.

Income generated Our specialist care is provided completely free of charge, but it is not without cost. St Clare receives only limited NHS funding, meaning that most of the cost of our care is funded through voluntary donations, or in other words, by the generosity of those who believe in the difference that St Clare makes to those facing one of the most difficult journeys in life. More than 600 people took part in our 80s-themed Midnight Walk, helping raise £40,000. Peanut and Daisy took the lead at Winter Walkies after almost 90 dogs entered our Facebook competition to be the furry face of our event. The 20th annual St Clare Open Gardens Weekend organised by our Harlow Friends raised more than £6,000.

A ‘Vintage & Retro’ range was introduced at our Harlow shop, while our specialist music and book shop in Bishop’s Stortford began selling a range of electrical goods, including musical instruments, amps and stereos. The St Clare lottery was re-launched with a new rollover prize of up to £10,000. We also introduced St Clare scratch cards for the first time. 232 volunteers aged 18 to 90+ lent a hand in our eight St Clare shops every week. More than 670 individual purchases were made weekly in our shops in Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford, Buckhurst Hill, Debden, Dunmow, Epping, Loughton and Saffron Walden. Future plans Our vision is to be able to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place for every family who needs it. So much has been achieved in the past 25 years, but with people living longer, the population ageing and the needs of families aected by life-limiting illnesses becoming ever more complex, the next 25 years are going to be extremely challenging for our society.

In order to start preparing now for the challenges we know lie ahead, it is our aim in the coming year to: Start planning a dedicated children’s support and bereavement service. Further enhance our work supporting people with a non cancer diagnosis. Develop our volunteer led community befriending scheme. Enhance our Hospice at Home service to care for more people. Launch a Young Ambassadors volunteering scheme.

Thank you St Clare Hospice could not continue caring for local people without the many kind individuals, companies, groups, clubs, trusts and societies who support us. We are indebted to our community and supporters and sincerely thank you for all you do. St Clare Hospice Impact Report 2014/15
