Our community
St. Clement’s School has been a proud member of the local community since the Parish Hall at St. Clement’s Church was home to our first students 117 years ago. From those modest beginnings we have continued to grow as a school, just as the community around us has also grown. It is hard to believe now that this area of the city was not even Toronto at that point, but was instead the village of Eglinton. At that time Yonge Street was mud and the shadows cast on St. Clement’s Church came from neighbouring orchards as opposed to houses and buildings. In much the same way, our School has grown from a single room to
Our excellence
For more than a century, St. Clement’s School has maintained a well deserved reputation for excellence in everything the School undertakes. From our Mission Statement to our declared core values, SCS continues to underscore the same dedication to excellence that inspired Canon Thomas Wesley Powell to found the School. It was this commitment that featured highly in our choosing St. Clement’s for Paige, and we know that it features very highly in the decision making process of many SCS parents. That excellence doesn’t come by accident, however, and to maintain it in everything from academics and our high-calibre faculty, to

a modern facility and that growth continues both within the community that surrounds and because of the community that lies within.
Since the first day that our daughter Izzy attended St. Clement’s School, we have been struck by the respect that the School has shown for all of the girls within its walls.
As we continue to look to the future and ensure that our girls are best prepared for the world they will face, it is thanks only to the tremendous generosity of the entire St. Clement’s community of faculty, staff, parents, alumnae, and of course, our girls, that we continue to grow towards that future together.
St. Clement’s School is a haven for girls of all ages, cultures, faiths, and backgrounds. A place where all Clementines can feel safe, secure, and nurtured while receiving a superlative education. And thanks to the support of so many people through the Annual Fund, a place in which girls whose financial circumstance might not otherwise permit them to benefit from such an education, further add to our community and be able to learn, grow, and thrive here.

Our integrity
our experiential education trips, co-curricular opportunities, and the School facility itself, requires the support of every Clementine, parent, alumna, and staff member.
No words can properly express the gratitude I feel for each and every one of you who have contributed to our Annual Giving over the course of the past year.
In the 2017–18 year, our community donated a record $600,432 to the Annual Fund. It is this generosity and the understanding of all that St. Clement’s School stands for that enables us to maintain the excellence for which the School is renowned.
As someone who has the privilege of spending every day in St. Clement’s, not a day goes by during the school year when I am not astounded by the sight of our girls helping each other, gaining confidence, growing in maturity, and just generally becoming precisely the sort of women that our world needs. It is a sight that makes me proud to be a part of the St. Clement’s community, and which leaves me so very grateful for the warmth, generosity, and integrity of that community.

academic enhancements, facility and technology upgrades, and through our Financial Assistance program, by providing deserving students with the opportunity to receive that SCS education. In 2017–2018, in part thanks to the Annual Fund, scholarships were awarded to 27 eligible students based on their level of financial need, ensuring that we are able to continue to admit the very best and brightest applicants.

While every SCS girl may be different, all are united in their desire to become intellectually curious, courageous, and compassionate. Likewise, while every contributor to our Annual Giving may have a different reason for giving to the School, all are united in wanting to see St. Clement’s continue to grow, continue to offer an education of excellence, and continue to develop those outstanding women. Rest assured that your generosity is truly valued and helps to make SCS what it is today.

We are thankful for volunteers
As deeply rooted as St. Clement’s School is in our Midtown community, so our community is as deeply rooted in a cherished legacy of philanthropy, generosity, and dedication. St. Clement’s School would not be what it is—and what it has been for 117 years—without the volunteers who actively support the School with their time, energy, experience, and unlimited talents. From parents and alumnae, to staff and friends, SCS is richer for the contributions of all our volunteers.

We are working to ensure sustainability
To accomplish all that happens in an academic year at St. Clement’s requires significant resources. With support from the entire community, we are able to ensure SCS continues to offer an outstanding education for our students.
How donations have an impact on our girls
Gifts to the Annual Fund ensure that students across all grades experience augmented curricular and co-curricular programming, beyond what is covered by tuition. These take the form of everything from technological upgrades and room enhancements, to guest experts in the classroom.
We are stronger together
Your generosity is powerful
Your support of the Annual Fund enriches the lives of our girls and our teachers through a variety of programs and initiatives that augment the learning experience of each of our girls. Your gift has an impact.
Gifts also help ensure the best and brightest girls are able to receive a St. Clement’s education, adding immeasurably to our overall School community. ter-than-22% increase over five years A g rea

We are growing our culture of philanthropy As we have grown from a simple farmhouse surrounded by orchards to our current facility, we are grateful to all of those who have donated to St. Clement’s School over the years. Donors who have cumulatively contributed $25,000 or more to SCS are listed below. It is these gifts that have played a crucial role in keeping St. Clement’s at the forefront of education and in shaping the learning and development of all Clementines. For their generosity, we are grateful.

“Thank you for offering our daughter the opportunity to continue at St. Clement’s this coming year. There is no better school for her: she is comfortable, happy, and challenged in many different ways. I have not seen another school that offers the same safe environment for personal and academic development, one in which she can have a full expression of herself and one in which she can try different things without fear. Thank you for your leadership and all the work you do for strengthening the backbone of the School. We love SCS!” —Financial Assistance recipient

We are investing in the future
We are leaving a legacy
Our endowment donors provide ongoing funding to support St. Clement’s School’s educational goals while preserving real value for future generations. Endowed gifts are invested for a maximum yield, paying out a limited yearly amount while the principal grows over the years. These gifts are directed to areas requested by the donors.
The Francis C. Powell Heritage Society celebrates the legacy of the Powell Family and honours members of our community who have made provisions for a legacy gift to St. Clement’s School through bequests, gifts of life insurance, or charitable remainder trusts. We extend a sincere thank you to all of our Powell Heritage Society members. Your gift is a thoughtful expression of your belief in our mission to develop outstanding women who are intellectually curious, courageous, and compassionate.

In 1901, Eglinton was a town, St. Clements Avenue was an orchard, and Duplex Avenue did not exist. A handful of children made their way past those orchards to the St. Clement’s Church Parish Hall. That same year, Canon Powell, the first rector at St. Clement’s Church, established St. Clement’s School in the Anglican tradition. He felt learning could and should be an exciting and engaging experience, and chose to create a school that would: • have the freedom to teach a true
appreciation of the arts and literature;
• encourage mental agility and curiosity;
and
• develop a sense of commitment and
responsibility to fellow citizens.
Today, St. Clement’s School prepares students for a very different world from the one in which we were founded, yet the fundamental values that shaped our beginnings remain as central now as they were then.
