Mental Health Resources in Central Minnesota

The subject of mental health has dominated discussions in our culture recently. While there is still much work that needs to be done, huge strides have been made.

The deep stigma once attached to mental health has softened. Schools are teaching our children not just the technical aspects of mental health, but also providing them with tools to manage their own mental health. Many schools even administer assessments throughout the year in an effort to identify children who may be struggling. In addition, many companies have established wellness programs for their staff and some even provide counseling appointments at the company’s expense.

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing those in need of assistance with their mental health is access. An average time to wait for a counseling appointment is about a month. We would never accept having to wait a month for an appointment if we were feeling physically ill, yet we willfully accept it when it comes to our mental health.

Several organizations in Central Minnesota have launched programs in recent years to address this issue. The Beautiful Mind Project has two programs designed to increase access to mental health. One program offers Urgent Care for Mental Health where an individual can receive a counseling appointment within 24 hours. The other program offers completely cost-free counseling to those who need it. These programs address two of the major barriers – time and money – to receiving mental health treatment.

Central Minnesota Mental Health Center (CMMHC) provides unique programming that helps those with a more serious mental health issue integrate themselves into the community. They work with them on finding them stable housing and employment and creating a positive support system in their lives.

The programs described above put Central Minnesota residents in the enviable position of having some of the most creative programming solutions to mental health in the entire state. It will take continued support from the community and outside the box ideas for us to fully give mental health treatment options our loved ones deserve.
