As a parent of a child with special needs, you are part of a team that includes experts and professionals who are all working to support your child. Sometimes it is challenging to know how to effectively advocate for your child. We may be able to help. GETTING STARTED • Has your child been assessed for special education services? Do you have questions about the special education assessment process? MEDICAL SUPPORT • Does your child have medical problems? Is the school aware of them? TEAM PROCESS • Is your voice being heard as part of the IEP/IFSP/IIIP/ISP/504 team? EDUCATIONAL NEEDS • Do you understand what your child’s needs are and how they are being met–academic, developmental, functional, and (if appropriate) transitional? SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES • Is your child receiving her/his special education services in the least restrictive setting; is s/he being educated in the regular education classroom whenever possible? Are you comfortable with the educational and related services s/he is receiving? MINNESOTA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENTS (MCAs) • Are you concerned about your child’s progress toward Minnesota’s academic standards? Did you know that your child may qualify to take an alternative assessment rather than the MCA?
