hile this season’s away kit combination will be traditionally identified among Evertonians as salmon and navy, the official colour of Umbro’s bold, bright and progressive design for the 2019-20 season shirt is Living Coral. Voted by Pantone, the world’s leading colour matching company, as the Colour of the Year for 2019, Everton supporters across the land will be hoping this is a good omen to carry while wearing the jersey, as Everton embark on a new campaign shining bright, ready for the mission ahead in driving forward towards the Premier League’s elite. This second edition of the Umbro Shirtzine features interviews with Everton’s international duo Bernard and Lucas Digne talking about the team’s mentality on the road. We also speak to two of Everton Ladies’ defenders, Theo Walcott, and fans at home and in Barcelona. Whether it’s following Everton across the country among the thousands

on matchdays, seeing a fellow Blue wearing the badge at a festival, abroad on holiday, or spotting some Club memorabilia in a far away land - there’s always that special feeling of pride that comes with being close to Everton away from home and this year’s shirt is sure to stand out. Growing up, I can remember my own feelings of getting a new Everton kit during the summer months, recreating goals in the back garden after listening to away games on the radio - and I’m sure you have similar memories. Each year the kit comes out, it allows fans young and old to imagine what is ahead. Evertonians can hope it’s to see performances which will guide the Club on the road back to where it belongs.

he pitches that remain on Stanley Park are still played on for junior games throughout the season. They act as a reminder that the south-east corner of the park’s 110 acres of land is where the city’s original football club began. Everton’s story starts in 1758 with George Campbell, a trader and sugar boiler - ironic considering the Club would eventually become known as The Toffees - from the West Indies who would go on to become Mayor of Liverpool, and the purchase of a plot of land near to Stanley Park that would go on to become known as St. Domingo. Although Campbell would only live in the area for a total of 12 years until his death, the St. Domingo name would go on to live forever when, in 1871, the St. Domingo Methodist New Connexion Chapel was opened in Breckfield Road North. Seven years later, after forming the St Domingo

Cricket Club, Reverend Ben Chambers turned his hand to forming a football team to keep the already established cricket team fit during the winter months: St. Domingo FC was formed. The players would carry goalposts from Park Lodge to Mill Lane before fixing them to metal sockets on the wildly-marked pitches, but circumstances soon changed. As the team gained more success, St. Domingo began attracting players from outside the parish. This squad evolution inspired a change of name, so, in 1879, after a meeting at Queen’s Head Hotel on Village Street, a new name was agreed on - Everton Football Club. Since players of the age were all amateurs, there was little regulation on kit and while Everton wore a blue and white striped strip, there just weren’t enough jerseys for new players. Many of these new signings would end up wearing their own kits, or often colours representing previous clubs. In the 1881-82 season, a simple solution was offered: all players were to dye their mix-and-match shirts black and stitch a diagonal, two-inch wide scarlet sash: an original feature that has been rebirthed in this year’s kit and significant for being part of Everton’s first official uniform, introduced in a decade that finished with the Club becoming founding members of the Football League. When the Club moved to Goodison Park in 1892, they switched to salmon shirts and navy shorts, the colours which have inspired the away kit for 2019-20, before eventually adopting the famous Royal Blue jerseys in the 1901-02 season. Now, more than 125 years later, Everton and Umbro pay tribute to the first Evertonians to play at Goodison by bringing back the iconic colours for this season’s team to wear with pride away from home.

SOMEWHERE ON THE M6 DURING LAST SEASON’S VISIT TO FULHAM, ON ONE OF THE MANY COACHES CARRYING EVERTONIANS TO GAMES UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY, A NEW CHANT WAS BORN. “OUR LEFT-BACK IS MAGIC AND HIS NAME IS LUCAS DIGNE ”.

A

12

s soon as Lucas Digne walks into Constellations - a multi-purpose arts and music venue in the Baltic Triangle - he is glowing. One of the stylists comments on how the Frenchman smells exquisite and he wastes no time in going through the rails of new kits. Everton’s left-back is as excited as the fans who will follow later in the day. Now, when many Evertonians think of Digne, they think of the chant which has been created for him to the tune of Gigi D’Agostino’s trance classic ‘L’amour Toujours’. That resonates with me as Everton’s 2018-19 Player of the Season sits opposite wearing the new Living Coral away shirt, as we talk about gearing up for the season ahead. “When you sign for Everton, you feel the spirit,” says the 2018 summer arrival from Barcelona. “You feel it’s about more than just the Club. It’s crazy, really. We are working on building something here and I’m excited to push on. As far as history goes, it’s always good to learn these things about the Club. You hold onto what those memories mean. When we play away, we want to carry the feeling of our Club with us.” It’s clear from speaking more about his family, how important they are to the France international. We talk about how his many tattoos represent his family, with Digne noting his grandad as being a very important figure. He also tells the story of his older brother Mathieu, whose mischief prompted a move to another school which brought them closer to LOSC Lille where they both went on to become part of the youth system.

ST. D O M I N G O

“We would play together one against one all the time as kids. He was tough. He was bad in school but he was a great figure for me. He was a good player but didn’t go on to play professionally” Away from the game, the 26-year-old explains how becoming a father – Digne’s son was born in April – has impacted his life, describing parenthood as a “breathtaking experience”. And when he’s not wowing Evertonians with his lung-busting runs down the left flank or changing nappies, whatever free time he does have involves watching films and TV series. “To be honest, I’m just all about relaxing and watching films,” he says. “Game of Thrones, for example: I loved that. Some of the other players and the staff, I’ll tease them with spoilers. It’s all good fun.” We talk about one of his tattoos which reads, ‘Make your life a dream, and your dreams, reality’ and his aspirations to win a trophy with Everton which he knows could ignite an exciting group of players at the Club. He is thankful when I pass him a DVD of the Official History of Everton to take home, as we discuss his terrace chant and how that has become a fans’ anthem, and also the subject of Jordan Pickford’s rave music on the team coach after an away win. “When you travel after the game, it is perfect, you know” says Digne. “The atmosphere within the group, you feel as though you can fly. Knowing you have won three points for the Club and made the fans happy, amazing. “We are ready to take these steps together, travelling everywhere with the ambition to win. Of course it’s great the Everton supporters think I’m magic - and I can tell you that I think exactly the same of them.”

“ WE ARE READY TO TAKE THESE STEPS TOGETHER , TRAVELLING EVERYWHERE WITH THE AMBITION TO WIN.”

ana Roks has been following Everton away for as long as she can remember. Growing up in the vicinity of Goodison Park, it was her many Umbro Everton kits which defined her childhood. Her dad Jimmy - known as Jethro, a reference to a character in the TV show Lost Cause – is a locally-loved, longserving postman who began arranging minibuses to watch the team in 1976. From growing up as one of a group of kids on the coaches, Hana says the older fans always made a fuss over them. At 14-years-old, she took over as the organiser of a strong community of fans and since 2005 she has taken responsibility for arranging tours for all games across the UK and beyond. In that time she has been joined by visitors from Germany, America and Singapore, who have become part of an extended Everton family, enjoying the welcoming party atmosphere on board the buses. Here Hana wears the new away shirt alongside her wife Tash and tells us more about the personalities on the coach and which songs set the tone on board a typical Everton away day...

PRINCE OF EUROPE ONE DAY IN BARCELONA WITH THE CORAL’S BOY BLUE .

Jack Prince: Enjoying life in the Catalan sun

I

n 1924, Everton became one of the first teams from England to win a trophy in a European tournament when they won the Barcelona Cup in Spain, beating Newcastle United 3–2. The Club went back to Barcelona last year to secure more prized possessions in the form of Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina, and returned again this summer for Andre Gomes. Jack Prince is a percussionist with Merseyside band The Coral. Now living in the Catalan capital, we thought the Evertonian would be the perfect man to talk about the new coral away shirt and life as an international Toffee in Barcelona...

How did you become an Evertonian? As is often the case, it runs in the family. It was my dad who made me an Evertonian, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

ST. D O M I N G O

Where do you watch the match? A group of Barcelona Evertonians got in touch via Twitter when they saw I was a Blue. When I’m in the city and Everton are playing, we meet up at the Philharmonic Pub on Carrer de Valencia. It’s a great atmosphere and it’s really nice to have that feeling of home when you’re living away, to see people who are Evertonian through and through, and to see an Everton shirt in Catalonia. It’s a tight-knit community and one I feel is important. What are your thoughts on the new shirt? I love it. I was always hoping we’d go back to the Living Coral look at some stage. It’s a really nice fit and I particularly like the collar. I’m not sure I’ll get away with wearing on stage, however, as all the band and crew are Liverpool fans. I’ll certainly push my luck, though... Finally, what are your thoughts ahead of this coming season? As always, I’m hoping for European qualification. There’s nothing better than travelling away with your mates watching the Blues. I think the Club is heading in the right direction. Where we should be. The coach, Marco Silva, and his philosophy, [Director of Football] Marcel Brands and the players we’ve got now give you confidence. As always, I’ll be making as many games as I possibly can.

“I THINK THE CLUB IS HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. WHERE WE SHOULD BE .”

21

JACK PRINCE

What do you think makes Barcelona so great? Once I came to the city I immediately fell in love with the place, the people, the culture. It’s got everything. You can spend the day on the beach and your evening in the mountains. It’s an extremely special place and one I call home.

s he enters the room, Bernard shakes hands with everyone. He’s as polite as he looks, but underneath there lurks a born winner, carrying himself with a confidence that comes from a journey of persistence and tenacity. We sat down with the winger to talk about the team’s colourful new uniform and how Everton are focused for all the challenges that await them in the 2019-20 season. What do you think of the kit ? I think it’s very pretty! It reflects one of

ST. D O M I N G O

the first uniforms of the Club. As a player you have to know the history of the Club, and it’s important for the fans to have that as well. We want to win silverware, so it’s important to remember all of Everton’s past success. Do you think the away shirt is a good representation of Everton as a stylish team? It’s a bold shirt suited to going away from home and playing on the front foot... Our manager Marco Silva always wants us to play good football and to have that connection with our fans. Of course, the most important thing is what we do on the pitch. We’ve got to be focused and deliver the goods when we are playing. If you don’t have that and are not dedicated, you will not succeed. The away kit is going to look great on the team but we know the key focus is on how we perform together. Growing up in Belo Horizonte, how did you grow to love football? I’ve always been obsessed with the game. I thought about it 24/7. I would sleep with a football. My mum used to carry my lunch outside to me just so I could carry on playing. Becoming a professional player was always the thing that I wanted most and it’s an absolute dream for my parents, too. And, I’m really happy playing in the Premier League, to be playing in the most competitive league in the world. It has been a dream come true. I have seen you mention previously your father’s influence. Was he there at every game watching from a child to now? He was always there. I’ve always had huge motivation from him. There were times I had a few moments of doubt, when I thought I was going to give up, and he was always there to guide me. He always knew my potential. For me to arrive to where I am now, my parents have been hugely influential and have done everything to help me achieve my best.

SHIRTZINE 2019-20

When I went to Brazil in 2014 for the World Cup, I discovered aćaí. Have you had any Brazilian drinks or dishes since moving here? Aćai (a South American berry) is something I have found in a Brazilian supermarket in Manchester. I have been going there whenever I can! [laughs] We’ve not yet had it at the training ground, but one day one of the cooks did feijoada [a stew of beans with beef and pork, often considered Brazil’s national dish]. Richarlison and I really appreciated that: the one thing you always miss from home is the food. How important has the support of Evertonians been in helping you settle at the Club? It’s huge for us. Everton has a fanbase that has a huge passion for the Club. It hit me straight away, to be honest. We know how important success is for them and it helps intensify each game for us all the time. When we feel they are by our side, we play well and whenever we have lost, we feel they are backing us up. Their support and that connection is something we really want to have. Finally, like Lucas Digne you have a lot of tattoos. Of yours, which is the most important to you? [He points to the right of his neck] This one... It says ‘perseverance’. It reminds me of my belief to keep going, when I had to prove doubters wrong because of my size. In many ways, it is the meaning of my career, and with Everton, we will persevere towards our ambitions.

ST. D O M I N G O

25

Are you aware of the Brazilian national team playing at Goodison Park in the 1996 World Cup and 1995 Umbro Cup? I’ve heard something about this but I’ve never seen the pictures! Pele played here? It shows what an honour it is to play at Goodison Park and it’s important for me and Richarlison that when we play at Everton we can represent Brazil in a good way and win.

eorgia Brougham is in high spirits, keeping the ball up alongside her teammate and defensive partner Taylor Hinds in the studio at Constellations. At 23-years-old, the central defender is loving life at the place she calls ‘home’ since making the move to Merseyside from Manchester City in 2015. She is optimistic ahead of the Women’s Super League season, beginning the campaign on 8 September away to Birmingham City - where the Coral jersey will debut for the Ladies. “Being full-time at Everton, we are constantly crossing paths with the men’s team and it’s like one big family here.” says Brougham. “Obviously it helps us with our preparation massively. The league will be even more competitive this year which is good.” “It’s an exciting season to go into with a new wave of momentum sweeping through the women’s game. I feel as players and advocates of the sport we have a responsibility to show our personalities. The more we promote ourselves and the game the more people will get involved both playing and watching the sport. “This new kit is a good representation of where Everton is at. We have a bright future and I’m looking forward to seeing the fans coming to watch us wearing the new shirt.”

OUR NORTHAMPTON-BORN LEFTBACK ON WHY HER LIFE ON MERSEYSIDE IS THE PERFECT FIT.

TAY LO R M A D E FOR EVERTON

I’d wear this with jeans or trackies, definitely. It’s nice for our female fans, these days, that they can buy actual women’s team’s tops. How have you found the city of Liverpool since moving from London?

When I go home down south I miss this city. I love going home to see my family but I love it here. The people are the main thing you notice. They have a lovely nature and the Club reflects that. I’m very grateful to be part of the One Club vision that’s in place at Everton. I never thought I would be where I am now. I’m glad I’ve moved to Everton: I’m very happy here in the city.

What are your feelings of this new kit, Taylor?

I love all the new kits, to be honest. I like the graphical element Umbro have gone for. Especially the away one. The designs shows part of the story of the Club, it’s rich history. When the fans see this they are going to love it. I feel like every year the fans get excited when a kit comes out, but this year is probably extra special. I love the colour. I love the look, the feel of it. It’s so nice. It’s mad to think about really. Like Georgia, I started off at boys’ teams and the kits would drown me so I would have to roll the sleeves up and tuck the shirt in. I guess I was styling football shirts even back then...

ST. D O M I N G O

On my table on the coach to away games are Chloe Kelly, Faye Bryson and Danielle Turner. We are always cracking jokes. Everyone gets on so well. The journeys can be so long so it’s good to have a laugh. I room with Elise Hughes, we get on really well. All the girls enjoy each others company during our downtime but ultimately we make sure we are prepared as best as possible for games. We are all into our music. There’s always a bit of a mix although the safe bets are Drake and Rihanna. Simone Maghill is known to go for some country music whereas Georgia’s well into her old school R’n’B so we can get down to that as well!

“ THE DESIGNS SHOWS PART OF THE STORY OF THE CLUB, IT’S RICH HISTORY. WHEN THE FANS SEE THIS THEY ARE GOING TO LOVE IT.”

GOING FOR GLORY

THEO THEO THEO AHEAD OF HIS THIRD SEASON AT EVERTON, WE SPOKE TO THE EXPERIENCED FORWARD ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL AND HOW HAVING HIS FAMILY FINALLY SETTLED IS PREPARING HIM FOR STRONG SEASON.

E “EVERYONE IS WORKING AS HARD AS THEY CAN. I THINK YOU WILL SEE THE BEST OF US THIS SEASON.”

ighteen months into his Everton career, Theo Walcott gives us his viewpoint on why kits are important for modern-day players, why he feels settled on Merseyside, and how his five-year-old son is getting his head around the beautiful game. “I’m into this kit. It’s not too busy, clean looking, feels really good and lightweight. It will complement well on the pitch. No one can say they won’t be able to see their teammates, that’s for sure. I’m told coral is Colour of the Year for 2019. Let’s hope we can deliver the goods wearing it throughout 2019-20. There is definitely a trend with modern players of the importance in ‘looking good, playing good’. A lot of players these days like to have a fresh haircut before a game so it’s important to feel good in the shirt, too, and it’s great to see the technical developments of the kits each year. I’ve got to say, my life here is great. My wife and kids were still down south for a while, so I found it difficult at first but now they are with me, it’s so much better. People just see us on the field, they don’t see the other side of it. Of course it can affect your performance. Sometimes I’ve been deprived of sleep and everything what with having a little one. It’s just life and those things can take its toll but I’m finally feeling refreshed and I’m raring to go. Training is very intense under the manager, as you can expect from our

ST. D O M I N G O

pressing game. We are starting to know the drills and exactly what is required. I’m really enjoying it. Everyone gets on really well in the dressing room, too. There’s no ego in there. Everyone is working as hard as they can. I think you will see the best of us this season, for sure. Finley, my eldest, will definitely be keen to get in his new kit. At home, if he sees a football match on TV, he still thinks, ‘There’s Daddy playing’. He’s still learning about football. I haven’t started taking him down the field yet, but I will eventually. I do a little bit at home. I’m not going to force the game on him or nothing. He loves it when we leave Goodison and there’s other kids waiting for autographs and photos. He’ll start by thinking, ‘Why do you want a photo with my dad?’ but then he starts asking for photos with the kids. It’s great! After games, it means so much to see kids waiting outside the stadium for your autograph. It’s always there at Everton. It’s important to give back and I love that side of the Club. Playing away is always so difficult. There are no easy games, home or away, and fans pay good money to come and support us so you always respect that. Our fans, you’ll hear them everywhere. You always hear them. You can’t not. They support us in numbers and the strength they give us in noise is vital. It really gives you an extra boost in the toughest games.

Settled: Excited for the new season.

AWAY DAYS IN UMBRO

My first away day came at St. Andrews when Bob Latchford got sent off against Birmingham City, for kicking his brother who played in goal for them. Howard Kendall scored for Birmingham that day and we drew 1-1. I was only 10, but hooked for life. I remember the day as my dad drove all the way there, as he did a few times during that period. It was never

2. NORWICH 0-1 EVERTON, 4 MAY 1987 Clinching the league on a sunny bank holiday Monday. We played in blue that day and it’s a special one for a lot of Evertonians. Me, my brother, and my dad were all on the pitch at the end, the players were absolutely mobbed. We were

That’s what it’s all about, though. No matter where Everton are playing, Evertonians are there in their thousands. Young and old, from near and far. Selling out every away end at every ground. That’s what Everton means to us. We wouldn’t swap it for the world.

3. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 2-5 EVERTON, 27 APRIL 1996 An Andrei Kanchelskis hattrick. He was at his absolute best. John Ebbrell and Daniel Amokachi got the other two. Joe Royle’s team... Oh, what could have been. We played in the white and grey kit that was the inspiration for last season’s

third kit. I think tradition is there to be remembered and updated. It’s great to see Everton and Umbro using old designs to form part of new ones.

4. CHELSEA 1-2 EVERTON, 4 APRIL 1987 Victory thanks to an Alan Harper effort and an own goal in a downpour at Stamford Bridge. I was soaked through. I had a tweed jacket on which weighed about an extra three stone at the end of the game.

ST. D O M I N G O

An early season night match. Tony Cottee scored two, including the late winner, and John Ebbrell the other goal. We got exactly the same result in 2010, thanks to a 90th-minute Tim Cahill winner. The team was wearing a black and pink kit that day, inspired by one of the very first Everton kits. I think it’s an interesting and unique story with Everton that they were wearing a whole mismatch of kit right at the start. It’s great that here we are years later and we can still remind people about the Club’s origins through the kit.
