avy blue has long been a part of Everton’s traditional colours. Whether accompanying the iconic Royal Blue at home or being twinned with white, salmon or the coral tone of this season’s away shirt, the colour is integral to the Toffees’ story. For many Evertonians, there is something special about the team running out in all blue away from home and, for 2019-20, we will see two shades. An understated strip, this Umbro third kit is the second part of the ‘Black Watch’ inspiration, aimed to help give Everton a presence when they take to the pitch on matchdays. With the features including ribbed sleeves, drop-hems and a stylised V neckline - the only shirt of the three this season to include a second reference from Everton’s 1992-93 season as well as the neck graphic - the shirt is specifically designed to look good both on and off the field. For this final edition of St. Domingo, I enjoyed spending time with more

members of the first-team squad during the shoot at Camp & Furnace. In my generation of watching Everton, Leighton Baines continues to be a fantastic player to watch and it was a great honour to be able to sit down and have a chat with him as well as Andre Gomes, a player who has captured the hearts of all supporters since arriving on Merseyside. As a whole, throughout the process of producing the three editions, it has been fantastic to meet the personalities you watch represent Everton each week and to see first hand the genuine passion they have for representing the Club while seeing their first reaction to the new kits which match supporters’ enthusiasm. Just like the current team that has been assembled on the field, there is a real modern and innovative feel that Umbro has captured across all three kits that fit the image of Everton perfectly. I’d like to sign off by highlighting the hard-working team at Everton, Umbro, MATTA, Fanatics as well all of the photographers, stylists and assistants that have contributed across the three editions of St. Domingo. As I have mentioned in the previous two editions, let’s hope these three kits are remembered as part of a memorable season for the Club. Best Wishes Alan Bond, Editor

WHEN ANDRE GOMES was officially unveiled by Everton in late July, it didn’t just signal a statement of intent on the field, but offered a strong reminder to loyal Evertonians of what the Club can mean to its players. On loan from Barcelona last term, Gomes became a mainstay in Marco Silva’s midfield. Possessing the style and guile of an Everton player moulded in the School of Science methodology, he gained respect for the time and love he had for supporters. At Camp & Furnace, a cultural hub at the heart of the Baltic Triangle area of the city of Liverpool, and with the deep blue studio lights set up, shining against the traditional red brick of the large space, there is a sense of anticipation awaiting the 26-year-old when he arrives on set. As he arrives for our shoot, he gives the new shirt a nod of approval and we settle into an interview set away from the rest of the players. The quiet space will

stop Yerry Mina distracting him, Gomes explains with a smile. The Portuguese talks freely and openly about his journey to Goodison Park, how the hard courts of his hometown Grijo shaped his game and, most importantly, why he was happy to settle at the Club. The history, the honours, the supporters, the stadium: Everton already means so much to him. “The Club is brilliant,” says Gomes. “The effort they put in outside the pitch is massive. We feel we are family: fans, Club and players. It is different from other clubs because you are not just a figure who plays, you are a person and you get to go out and meet the people who care so much about us.” Gomes mentions the new stadium proposal at Bramley-Moore Dock with excitement as we go on to discuss The People’s Project for a iconic new stadium and Goodison legacy project, his gesture of buying a young fan a jumper at the Club shop last season and the “hugathon” in which the midfielder embraced 200 Evertonians in aid of The People’s Place, Everton’s proposed mental health facility situated just a short distance from Goodison Park. “You know the fans are giving everything all the time, fighting, urging us on,” says Gomes. “These people work hard all week to come to watch us play and we want to represent what they stand for on the pitch. The people of Liverpool are hard workers, you see so many of the kids in kits already when driving around.” His relationship with Everton didn’t begin when he arrived last summer. saw Gomes visit both Premier League stadiums in Liverpool and he remembers the atmosphere at Goodison Park being completely different from what he experienced growing up in northern Portugal. “Manuel Fernandes was playing around that time,” Gomes says with a smile. “I remember watching Nuno Valente when he was a player here, too. He was an excellent left-back for the Portugal national team.” I try to explain to him his impact on the pitch from the stands. I mention Mikel Arteta, a player many Evertonians believe Gomes can emulate in this modern Toffees side. Unsure if he understood me, I explain what I mean. “He is a genius,” he interrupts. “A brilliant player. He is a legend here at Everton. I can’t accept any comparison with him. I will do my best to have the same influence he did on that Everton team with my own style and I want to adapt to the system of the team to reach our goals.” This year, now a permanent fixture in the side, Gomes swapped the number eight for his favoured number 21 shirt. All part of the settling-in process, he explains. “It’s a special number for me,” says Gomes. “It is also the number I wore at Valencia and Barcelona. I haven’t been

living with my family since I was 18, but the first time I took a flight and moved to another country, I was aged 21. It was a new start for me so it felt right. From that moment I was number 21.” Having won a domestic treble in the 2013-14 season with Benfica, then Euro 2016 with his country in France, Gomes has a serious look in his eyes when I ask about his aims for the season ahead. He’s clearly a player with ambition. “Look, we will see,” he says. “We hold our ambitions as a team and while we know you have to manage expectations, believe me, we will enter all three competitions aiming to win them. “That has to be the approach to building a winning mentality and Everton is a club with big desire not just from the supporters but from the players. “Sometimes we have bad days but we are still thinking about victory or going to the next level, reaching the three points. “You feel committed to each other and to the team and the fans. Everyone who arrived here last season knows what it means to wear the shirt. We are settled here.” It’s this statement of intent, of commitment, and his clear affinity with the fans that makes André Gomes stand out as an Evertonian. When he came here a decade ago, he felt it, he felt it again during his loan spell, and he’s decided he wants to feel it every week for the next few seasons, at the very least. He’s the people’s player.

“I’m into the kits this year. It’s important to keep that image that matches the values of Everton and all three nod to the tradition with a modern design. The references to kits from when I was a kid are cool to see, too. From a performance side, straight away even putting the kit on, it has a really light feel. Playing in it is going to be even more comfortable. “When it comes to young players, it’s not something we really think about, the mentoring thing. But Tom [Davies] is very cool; I love Tom and his personality. He’s his own man. He’s strong minded as well, much more comfortable within himself than I ever was at that age. I was still trying to figure out how I fitted and conforming to what I thought I had to be like. I spent a lot of time like that. It took me until I was in my mid-twenties to feel comfortable in my own skin, to stop trying to figure out what everyone else wanted. “Tom doesn’t need me to progress. It’s like all of the young lads coming through, you have to let it happen naturally. There will be times when you will give young players a little boost whether it’s on the training ground or the pitch. It’s a funny

one, I came through with the opposite. It was a lot of tough love. “It’s not just changed on the pitch for players. Off it, there are different pressures with social media and being in the public spotlight more. But at the same time, I think there’s more scope to explore other things away from the game, while still being dedicated to your profession. “I started playing around with some film cameras about three years ago and then, when we were moving around from A to B on the bus or the train, I was just taking pictures. Over time I had all these pictures that started to mean something more so I actually put a book together just for the players over the summer. There was a handful of copies of this book which covers pre-season where we have a lot of downtime between the tough sessions. Stuff around the training ground, games, getting there on the bus, when we arrive... In the 10-15 minutes when the mascots are coming in and people are sorting their tickets, you can grab a few pictures. “It’s nice giving the lads a book when we all come back from the off-season. They all seemed to enjoy it and quite a lot of them wanted to show their parents and families. “It’s a great group of people at the Club right now. All I say to the new players is, “If you are out there and they see you putting the work in, they will give you a chance”. That was always the thing for me: if Evertonians know you are playing for them, you will get a chance. Whether that’s the fans or the people in the medical room or Jimmy Martin and the lads in the kit room, if they know you’re grafting, they’ll take to you. They were always the people I wanted to impress and in a mad way, I still do.”

32 MOMENTS IN UMBRO
UNDER THE LIGHTS A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF EVERTON’S MOST MEMORABLE NIGHTS ON THE ROAD IN RECENT YEARS IN ALL THREE DOMESTIC COMPETITIONS .
1. MANCHESTER UNITED 0-3 EVERTON, AUGUST 19 1992 (PREMIER LEAGUE) Howard Kendall’s men put Alex Ferguson’s young Manchester United side to the sword in front of a stunned Old Trafford crowd. Goals from Peter Beardsley, Mo Johnston and Robert Warzycha saw Everton sitting pretty in third, as United, who would become champions, slumped to 22nd place. The first year of the
ST. D O M I N G O
Premier League saw Everton defeat both Manchester clubs on the road, putting five past Manchester City in a 5-2 win at Maine Road, later in the season.
2. LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON, SEPTEMBER 27 1999 (PREMIER LEAGUE) A fiery Merseyside derby that saw three red cards, one for the Blues and two for the Reds, and a Kevin Campbell winner after just four minutes. Francis Jeffers,

well-placed header, fired Roberto Martinez’s team into the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup. Lukaku’s goal was his sixth in five games for the Blues and the fixture extended Everton’s unbeaten run to a sixth game. Deulofeu’s manof-the-match effort was one of a number of accomplished performances by the Spaniard in blue that year.
Nicky Barmby, and Super Kev combined to silence the Anfield crowd early on and help the Blues to victory.
3. MANCHESTER CITY 0–2 EVERTON, FEBRUARY 25 2008 (PREMIER LEAGUE) Two first-half goals in 10 minutes from Yakubu and Joleon Lescott, against a Manchester City side featuring Richard Dunne and Michael Ball saw Everton climb up to fourth place in the table.
A controlled and authoritative performance frustrated City – who finished the game with 10 men after Martin Petrov’s stoppage-time red card for kicking out at Leon Osman – and helped secure a top-five finish and European football for Everton.
4. MIDDLESBROUGH 0–2 EVERTON, DECEMBER 1 2015 (LEAGUE CUP) A fine Gerard Deulofeu strike and Romelu Lukaku’s

5. SUNDERLAND 0-3 EVERTON, SEPTEMBER 12 2016 (PREMIER LEAGUE) An 11-minute Romelu Lukaku hat-trick gave Everton all three points at the Stadium of Light to continue an unbeaten start to the 2016-17 season. Sunderland, managed by David Moyes and including former Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell, could do nothing to stop the Blues on the night as their quickfire goal spree started on the hour mark.
