PIAF ~ the songs Eve Loiseau sings the songs of Edith Piaf with Eddy Jay, accordion and Fiona Barrow, fiddle Edith Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 1940s & 50s and remains France ‘s most popular singer. Piaf’s life was the stuff of legend, from her dramatic rise from Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Her life, however, was anything but ‘La Vie en Rose’. She suffered insecurity, self-abasement, anger, obsessive passion and a constant quest to be loved and accepted - a maelstrom which took its toll upon her mental stability as the pressures of her fame increased. As the 50th anniversary of Piaf’s death approaches, this powerful celebration comes from a company whose credentials include Kneehigh Theatre and Canteve Vocale. www.Piaf-the-songs.co.uk Since her debut at the Royal Festival Hall in Feb 2002, Eve Loiseau has given recitals in England, New York & France and has featured on BBC R3, WNYC Radio, PMW Music and the BBC production, The Roman Mysteries. Eve performs with Canteve Vocale and the baroque ensemble, Duo Dolcetini. “Absolutely wonderful arrangements! And as for that Piaf singer - amazing. She is better than the real thing, and I don’t say that lightly.” John Hardy, composer of Bafta award winning movie Abraham’s Point. Shakespeare’s Globe Touring Presents

“As You Like It” Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match, but her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity, banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she seeks out her father and his friends in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love. Performed on an Elizabethan-style stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathes new life into this firm favourite among Shakespeare’s comedies, which runs the glorious gamut of pastoral romance: cross-dressing and love-notes; poetry and brilliant conversation; gentle satire, slapstick and passion. The lawns will be open before hand to enjoy a pre-performance picnic for a perfect summer’s outing. Please make sure you bring your own seating! £16.50 & £15 Concessions

Moby Duck presents

Bong Soon - A Windy Tale By Peter Wynne Willson with Ko Dun Duck

Moby Duck has joined forces with Sadari Theatre, Korea’s best known children’s company, in a unique new collaboration. You can hear Bong Soon coming for miles. She toots and hoots, biffs and boffs, and pumps her way round the village, waking small children, frightening goats; even blowing pheasants out of trees. “All we want”, say the villagers, “is some peace”. She tries to keep things quiet , she really does, for 3 whole years, not a peep or a poop or a parp. Then it all gets too much, she can’t hold it in any longer. This is where the story starts. Storytelling, live music, puppetry and wild exuberant Korean humour, swirl together into a heady, exhilarating performance, unmissable! For children 4 years and over £6 / £ 4 concessions Family Ticket: £17 (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children)

live performance Friday 23 September, 7.30pm

The Coal Porters The Coal Porters were formed a decade ago in Los Angeles by ex Long Ryder Sid Griffin, author of the hit single ‘Looking for Lewis and Clark’ The Coal Porters began life as “a full on electric folk-rockin’ monster”, enjoying indie chart success in the UK and Europe and frequently touring Europe and the States. In 1999, however, Griffin produced Lindisfarne’s “Here Comes the Neighbourhood” comeback album and as a result, the Coal Porters metamorphosed into an authentic all-acoustic Bluegrass Band and never looked back. Their album’s ‘The Chris Hillman Tribute Concerts’ and ‘Turn The Water On, Boy!’ built on this exciting new acoustic format, which audiences across the country instantly warmed to. Their new album ‘Durango’ has been released to rave reviews from ‘Q’ and ‘Uncut’ among other calling it “...bluegrass with a slyly authentic feel, but with the flinty rockisms of Crazy Horse or, indeed, Griffin’s other band, the Long Ryders.” £15 & £13.50 (Table ticket) & £13 & £11.50 for a Balcony Ticket

Biography of a Shipwreck

Landscape and Natural Forms / Women

Michael Freeman

Allun Brown

Michael Freeman’s paintings have the compelling spiritual quality of icons; beautifully crafted works that were hard in the making, but whose eloquent handling of paint and intense feeling communicate the richness and splendour of the imagination. This exhibition of recent work has been assembled to mark the 75th birthday of this Swansea-based artist. Since the beginning of his career, his interest in the wreck of the Norwegian ship, the Helvetia, at Rhossili has spawned whole series of paintings and still continues to dominate his work.

Landscape and Natural Forms In these pieces I am interested in trying to achieve a brooding, mysterious quality expressed in large simplified forms with dark masses surrounding glowing or glittering effects of light.

3 May – 27 May

An Exhibition of Arts and Crafts By Adult Learners in the Rural Vale

Back for its 3rd year is the delightful and inspiring exhibition, showcasing the work of learners attending Adult and Community learning courses in the Rural Vale. The exhibition features painting, drawing, photography, textiles and calligraphy from both the absolute beginner to our professional artists.

Women I am interested in the earliest forms of Earth Goddesses linked to the cycles of nature, birth, death and regeneration, nurturing but sexually powerful as needed for procreation and survival. My images of women are intended to be subversive like those of Christian icons, showing the Goddess in the guises of The Virgin Mary, Eve, Sacrificial Victim etc. Some have political emphasis. Stylistic and visual qualities are varied to suit the particular purpose.

Heritage Coast Barry Camera Club These captivating images, taken by a mixed abilities group of photographers from Barry Camera Club, show individual representations of their locality. Photography, like painting, is a fantastic medium for evoking a feeling, be it happiness, sadness or a cherished memory. This exhibition evokes emotion – these pictures and images say “Come and visit. Did you know all of this was on our doorstep?” Or it may say, “We could lose this, if we don’t look after it.” It may reaffirm how lucky we are to see it at all. So come and visit and be inspired by our wonderful coastline.

1 August – 30 September

Eastern Valley Artists EVA is an established cooperative of painters who live and produce their work in the Eastern Valleys of Wales. The story of this castle and gardens is rich and colourful indeed - from ghosts wailing on stormy nights, executed pirates and more recently the story of fantastic riches and Hollywood romance when the castle was bought by a man who loved it – the American millionaire, William Randolph Hearst, to the current owners Atlantic College and their students. Tours begin and end at the St Donats Arts Centre’s café, which will be open for tea and cakes. Booking recommended. £5.50 (adults) £4.00 (concessions)
