ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE HELP US SHAPE YOUNG LIVES

I genuinely cannot think of a more impactful way that somebody could show their benevolence, than by transforming a life through the help of a bursary.

I genuinely cannot think of a more impactful way that somebody could show their benevolence, than by transforming a life through the help of a bursary.
Welcome to our latest Donors’ Impact Report for the 2022-23 academic year. I am hugely grateful to all our donors who, through their generosity, have made such a difference to the lives of so many young people.
St Dunstan’s was founded on benevolence and ambition. Benevolence that saw a group of parishioners from St Dunstan’s in the East see fit to fund a new school in the growing suburbs of London. Ambition to create a school that was ‘ahead of its current time’. A school that would not only trailblaze a radically different and modern curriculum, but one that would also champion enlarging access, supporting children from a range of backgrounds and means.
St Dunstan’s today is proud of this heritage and seeks to use it as a platform for our ongoing growth and evolution. Our development priority is to enable even greater access to our education from across our local community. This can only happen through a culture of giving to our ambitious bursary programme. Last year, thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to offer so much more access to our education, including offering transformational bursaries of 120% to three deserving Lewisham children. We now wish to support even more children who have the ability to attend St Dunstan’s but whose families do not have the means to pay for it.
Thanks to a dynamic Development Board, an increased engagement from our current body of parents and a renewed commitment from Dunstonians, we are excited by what the future holds for these ambitions and our vibrant Lewisham community. Thank you for being a part of it.
With sincere thanks,
Mr N P Hewlett HeadIn the last couple of years of my education at the college I benefited from all my fees being paid due to my parents’ situation dramatically changing. The College provided me with an education that allowed me to spend a lifetime building an IT business, and over the years I have repaid the ‘loan’ that my parents received in my last few years of education. I am proud to be part of helping the next generation of Dunstonians start out in the world, and particularly those who find themselves in a similar situation to me.
Martin Coulson (‘81)As a recipient of a Bursary myself, I benefited from a first rate education and thus today I am a donor to the current Bursary Fund. Education cannot be taken away from you and it benefits the student for many years after leaving school.
Navdeep Sheera (‘85) Chair of the Development BoardAs a current parent of two teenagers at SDC, and as a donor, it gives me great pleasure to see the bursary students thrive. I love feeling that I have contributed to the future of the school.

Education transforms lives. Expanding the funds we have for bursaries has been a top priority for St Dunstan’s in recent years, as bursaries at the College give academically able children from lower income families the chance of an excellent, and often life-changing, education. Widening access through bursaries is also a key vehicle for improving social mobility and a route towards a more inclusive society.
It takes just over £20,000 per annum to support a bursary student in the senior school. Since the launch of our fundraising efforts in 2020, we have raised over £600K for bursaries with a further £100K pledged to us. If we fulfil our ambition to raise £3m by 2028, the College’s 140th anniversary, we will have doubled the number of children able to benefit from a bursary.
Listen to David’s story...It cannot be overstated how great an impact St Dunstan’s College has had on my life, and the lives and pathways of many pupils in a similar position, who without financial support would have been unable to attend St Dunstan’s. The College offers so many opportunities for building character, from nurturing intellectual interests through the curriculum and beyond, to connecting with and growing from relationships with like-minded, passionate pupils and teachers.
Piotr (‘22)I will forever be grateful for my St Dunstan’s experience, where I have learnt to aim high and to keep exceeding with no limit to my aspirations.
Shalom (‘22)
I have been offered a place at Corpus Christi College Oxford to read Experimental Psychology. My journey to Oxford was not a solo effort, it was a guided exploration encouraged and facilitated by the professionals around me. The bursary, this blessing, granted me the opportunity to access the help I needed. I was the cook of the successful dish, yet the recipe and ingredients were given to me. The outcome is very sweet and has given sustenance to my life. For that I cannot thank enough all the generous donors.
Stanislav (‘23)For the first time in the history of the College, we have been able to offer bursaries to all deserving applicants on a “needs blind” basis for entry into Year 7 in September 2023. Also for the first time, we are now able to offer transformational bursaries of 110% and above for those most in need.
For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor and I am extremely proud to say I have achieved a place at Liverpool Medical School.
Whilst at St Dunstan’s, I was a recipient of an Academic, Music and Sports scholarship alongside a Bursary award, and this huge financial help gave me an entrance to an environment where I could succeed, and which otherwise would not have been available.
The Bursary Fund has been a catalyst for the increasingly diverse student population at the College, allowing bright students from all social groups to experience an environment supporting them to reach whatever aspiration they set their mind to.
St Dunstan’s pledge to provide financial support to any student who reaches the required academic attainment level, shows clearly that the school is committed to the local community and diversity in education. It fills me with pride to know that other children like myself have an institution committed to them, from the day they start, to the day they graduate.
We thank the following donors who have made a gift to St Dunstan’s College between 1 January 2020 and 1 June 2023. Whilst care and attention has been taken in drawing up this list, we apologise for any errors or omissions. Thank you also to all donors who have asked to remain anonymous:
