“The bursary not only eased the financial burdens of my education but also empowered me to fully immerse myself in my studies, extracurricular passions, and community involvement. It’s through this support that I’ve been able to thrive academically, personally, and socially, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.

Natasha (‘24)

In October 2023, St Dunstan’s College won the Independent School of the Year Award for Outstanding Fundraising Achievement, one of the most prestigious awards to receive in the educational sector.

Why our young alumni decided to take part:

“As a previous student of St Dunstan’s for over 10 years, I think this is a great opportunity for me to give back and help raise money for the bursary fund.”

Finley Maplestone

“As a student that benefited directly from a scholarship and bursary, I am also interested in participating in this outreach programme to ensure that St Dunstan’s is better connected to the local community and can provide educational opportunities for those that would not otherwise be able to afford them.”

Amber Vallarino-Law

“I wish to see the school continue to grow to reach more people who might not already have access to the privilege of attending St Dunstan’s who still very much deserve to have access to such an education.”

Freya Jacobs

Our Year 13 Deposit Campaign

For the past four years, we have been asking our Year 13 parents to consider donating some or all of their deposit to the school.

We completely understand that not every family is able to donate their full deposit at the end of their time at the College and we are grateful to every parent donating according to their means.

Our Bespoke Campaigns

Every now and again we ask our alumni community to consider funding specific projects in much the same way as the Friends of St Dunstan’s fund projects through the generosity of parents. During 2023-24, two projects were fully funded in such a way, namely:

A newly commissioned piece of music by Dunstonian composer Thomas Hyde (‘96) was inaugurated at Southwark Cathedral on Commemoration Day on 24 May 2024.

Thank you to Dunstonian John Nightingale (‘63) for funding this project.

A replica commemorative plaque of the one inaugurated on Ascension Day 1983 (above) which stands in the garden of St Dunstan in the East, re-enforcing the links the College has with its roots in the City of London.

Thank you to Dunstonian Philip Greader (‘76) below, for funding the whole project which now proudly stands at the front of the College.

OUR CAREER IMPACT ON YOUNG ALUMNI

We have now over 400 alumni volunteers delivering career advice, mentoring, lectures and workshops to our students and recent leavers. It means that our students and young alumni have never been better prepared for what lies ahead after their time at St Dunstan’s.

‘I have been a practising doctor for 25 years. I feel proud to have been educated locally and feel privileged to be able to work and give something back to this local community. Medicine is an ever evolving field and it is essential to inspire the next generation of students interested in a career in Medicine. By providing internships my medical practice will give an opportunity for students to get some exposure to a professional work environment and to observe real life clinical practice and patient experiences.’

‘Connecting with a mentor through the alumni network was a valued experience during my search for a trainee solicitor placement. I felt reassured at the prospect of receiving support and encouragement from a seasoned industry professional, both now and in the future. The mentorship programme is an invaluable resource, demonstrating St Dunstan’s commitment to student and alumni growth. I strongly encourage those seeking roles or established in their professions to contribute.’

OUR DEVELOPMENT BOARD

Our Development Board was set up in January 2020 and is currently chaired by Navdeep Sheera (’85). Its objectives are threefold:

To support the Bursary Campaign launched in February 2020 through active philanthropy

To inspire the next generation of Dunstonians to make a difference to the world

To support the work of the College and of the Development Office by sharing vision, expertise and skills

The Development Board’s members:

We are extremely grateful to all Development Board members, who are active participants in the life of the College attending key events, acting as speakers and sharing expertise with our students, as well as financially supporting our Bursary Fund.

The Board has so far given a total of £500,000 which includes pledges and gift aid. We are delighted to launch as from September 2024 the Development Board Bursary which enables a disadvantaged Lewisham pupil to start at the College in Year 7 on a transformational bursary.

Why I give to St Dunstan’s College...

‘I am delighted to be able to support the College by funding the repairs to the stained glass windows, especially as the Great Hall has held so many memories for me, becoming a favourite place during my time as a student.’

John Nightingale (‘63)

‘I attended SDC from 1975-1982. It was an iconic era and a great time to be young and a pupil at St Dunstan’s. Many decades later I have fond memories of the school, the staff and my fellow pupils, and have recently been lucky enough to reconnect with the school. It has changed almost beyond recognition, but in such a heat-warming way. Walking through the school corridors I was struck by what a vibrant, inclusive, positive and progressive environment it is, and I just want to be able to support it in what little way I can.’

Robert Earing (’82)

Help Us Shape Young Lives...

Natasha (‘24)

Entering my first year as a Sixth Former at the College, I had a clear idea of what I didn’t mind doing, but it was the rich variety of academic clubs, societies, and the immersive teaching style that truly ignited my intellectual curiosity. This environment empowered me to explore my true passions and chart a path that resonated deeply with me. It was within this nurturing atmosphere that I delved into the disciplines of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, discovering a profound interest that ultimately led to my acceptance of an offer to study PPE at the University of Oxford.

Throughout my journey at St Dunstan’s, I’ve had the privilege of being a recipient of a full bursary award. This invaluable financial support provided me with the freedom to embrace all the opportunities available, from academic pursuits to extracurricular activities.

“The bursary not only eased the financial burdens of my education but also empowered me to fully immerse myself in my studies, extracurricular passions, and community involvement. It’s through this support that I’ve been able to thrive academically, personally, and socially, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. The College’s commitment to supporting students who meet the academic criteria is truly remarkable; it demonstrates a dedication to ensuring that finances are not a barrier to an exceptional educational experience for those who seek it. St Dunstan’s exemplifies this commitment to the local community through the bursary fund, and I am inspired to know that the opportunities afforded to my curious mind will not be withheld from other children like me.

“ “

Natasha will be studying PPE at Oxford University from September 2024

OUR BURSARY FUND - What next?

Education transforms lives.

Values vary between 10% and 110%

22 students on 100% or more

12% of bursaries funded by private donations and legacies

Expanding the funds we have for bursaries has been a top priority for St Dunstan’s in recent years as bursaries at the College give academically able children from lower income families the chance of an excellent, and often life-changing, education. Widening access through bursaries is also a key vehicle for improving social mobility and a route towards a more inclusive society.

Our aim is to raise £5m by 2028, which will coincide with the College’s 140th anniversary.

How are we going to achieve this ambitious goal?

• By setting up an endowment fund which will generate

• By encouraging those who can to leave a legacy in their Will to the College

• By encouraging past bursary students to give back to the College as soon as they can

• By creating a culture of giving amongst the wider community in order to carry on fundraising at a local level

OUR LEGACY FUND - Continuing support

For many, the years spent at school are some of the most significant and life-changing of times. This is particularly true at St Dunstan’s College whose vibrant community of past students, parents and teachers remain connected to the school, and are passionate about its continued success. By giving a legacy gift to St Dunstan’s in your will, you will be helping us to continue to give the best education to future students, and you will continue to be part of the St Dunstan’s story.

There are different types of gifts you can make in your will, including giving a specified amount or the remaining part of your estate after providing for your family and other responsibilities. Gifts that are free from restrictions are particularly helpful, allowing the College to invest wherever our need is greatest. Or you may wish your gift to support our bursaries programme to give opportunities to those who would otherwise be unable to benefit from a St Dunstan’s education.

Whatever you choose, your will is an important and personal document and we recommend you contact your solicitor, either to draft your will or a codicil to your existing will.

Please download a Legacy Pledge Form from the College's website at: www.stdunstans.org.uk/development

Giving 10% or more of your taxable estate to charity reduces the rate of tax paid on your estate from 40%* to 36%

*Normal inheritance tax where there is no exemption

Giving 1% to charity means your loved ones can still receive 99% of your estate.

THE ALBAM EXORNA LEGACY SOCIETY

For those who wish to join us and be recognised publicly, you will become a member of the Albam Exorna Society.

An annual lunch for all members will be a time to celebrate your generosity as well as share memories from your time at the College with like minded Dunstonians.

You will also receive regular updates on how legacies are making a significant difference to the life of students at the College as well as be invited to special events such as Commemoration Day and Remembrance Day.

Membership of the Society is entirely optional - we understand you may wish to keep your intention private.
