REVEREND FORDER

O

ur Forder Programme is named after Reverend Frank Forder, one of our former visionary Headmasters, who was appointed to St Dunstan’s College almost a hundred years ago, in 1922.

Forder was an academic, having been educated at St Olave’s Grammar School and then at Christ’s College, Cambridge. He believed in the need for beauty, and was versed in many aspects of literature, art and music. His changes were to be wide-ranging when he joined the College, as he decided to give students attending St Dunstan’s “wider views and a fuller culture”. Indeed, he was concerned that the increasing range of subjects being taught in schools would end up creating a system of education which prioritised cramming and learning by rote, without any interest or engagement from the students. Rather than simply following the approach of others, he quickly changed the timetable and decided to end the school day early on three afternoons a week, in order to introduce “out of school” activities. There were a broad and diverse range of activities to choose from, such as Wireless Telegraphy, Metal Models, Photography, Lecturettes on Industry or Map Modelling. These unique, exciting and formative experiences offered the students an array of opportunities for the development of character, in its broadest sense. So many young people have been able to reap the benefits of this pioneering approach to education in the years that have followed.

THE FORDER PROGRAMME

T

he Forder Programme is the name given to our co-curriculum at St Dunstan’s. The name is taken from our pioneering second Headmaster, the Revd Forder, who believed passionately that schools should offer more to the education of young people than classroom learning. His educational philosophy was to put the health and character of a student above the simple acquisition of knowledge. In the pursuit of their passions outside of the classroom, the students would encounter a variety of experiences, each one an opportunity for personal growth and development. The Forder Programme today operates alongside the Stuart and Hecker curricula, to augment the broad and liberal educational experience that our students enjoy. This ambitious, forward-thinking programme is sufficiently broad to give each individual the freedom to carve out their own unique journey. No matter the pathway, each individual will embark on a journey that offers opportunities for character development, in its broadest possible context. This emphasis on character is evident in our five activity profiles, with each one based on a College value: Curiosity, Compassion, Creativity, Courage and Core.

port forms a significant part of this profile for boys and girls, with each of our Core Sports providing a focal point (rugby, football, hockey, netball, swimming, cricket). All students who join St Dunstan’s will have the opportunity to represent the College in at least two of these Core Sports in home and away fixtures with other local schools. We believe that all students should benefit from these formative experiences and not just a chosen few. Those who choose to progress further in each of these programmes will go on to receive expert coaching, full conditioning support from in house specialists, and have access to high level competition with schools locally, regionally and nationally. We also offer a broad range of Development Sports, which can vary each year depending on demand. Examples of popular programmes planned this year include; athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, fencing, fives, handball, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon & multisport and volleyball. In recent years, St Dunstan’s teams and students have progressed to regional competitions in athletics, badminton, basketball, cross country, fives and triathlon. In addition to sport, this profile is the home of wellness activities, which support the College’s drive to be proactive rather than reactive in our approach to supporting young people’s mental and physical health. Examples this year will include cooking, mindfulness, nutrition, strength & conditioning and yoga.

T

his profile inspires our students to embrace the great outdoors! Although the major programmes are only available from Year 9, younger students now get access to a wide variety of opportunities as a part of the Forder Programme.

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at St Dunstan’s is a very popular option for students. Both Army and Navy sections offer a variety of weekly clubs, such as Field Gun, Range Shooting, Scuba Diving and the weekly Parade. In order to give students the opportunity to apply the skills that they learn in weekly sessions, they also embark on regular weekend expeditions, which many of our leaving students refer to as their most memorable experiences. We are also proud of our thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. All students have the opportunity to take the Bronze Awards in Year 9, as they attend the Expedition together, and many go on to qualify for Silver and Gold Awards. As an introduction to adventurous activity, our Head of Adventurous Activity has developed a programme to give younger students access to weekly ‘expedition-style’ skill development sessions, and then a series of climbing, mountain biking and kayaking trips. In 2020-21, we are excited to relaunch our international expeditions.

ommunity Service and volunteering play a significant part in this profile with all students having the opportunity to participate in College, community and national/international projects. We encourage all students to seek out opportunities to positively impact on the communities that they are a part of, both near and far. Each year group has a community action group, who are responsible for planning projects that they feel will have the most impact; some local, some national - even some international. We also seek to provide leadership opportunities as a part of this profile, with students of all ages sharing their passions and expertise with younger students in both the Junior and Senior School. The common thread is that our students are active and not passive participants, leading change.

reative expression is vital for the development of all young people, and creative endeavor is something that we champion at St Dunstan’s. Our major departments seek to create opportunities for students to experience a variety of forms of art, dance, design, drama and music. This profile caters for students with all levels of experience, from learning a new discipline to performing in one of our major College events.

his profile includes three sub-sections, each designed to enrich the educational experience for our students.

Academic Enrichment – We believe that our subject teachers have so much more to offer our students than delivery of curriculum knowledge. They are all passionate about their respective subject areas, with many still involved in further study or research, and we want students to be able to share in their passions. They will have the opportunity to discuss and debate the topics that they love outside of the confines of the classroom and curriculum. Examples from different subject areas include Creative History, Big Questions in History, Junior Philosophy Club (JPC), RPE Magazine, Maths Challenge, Hans Woyda, Biology Extension Articles, Script Writing and Design Engineering. Clubs – These clubs are often developed by students and should be seen as an opportunity to enjoy activities that might not typically be found in a school setting. Warhammer, Lego League, Go Club and Coding are all popular options. Societies – These are all planned and delivered by our Sixth Form students but open to students of all ages. They act as a weekly forum for students to discuss and debate issues of social significance. Popular examples include Afro-Caribbean Society, Amnesty, Equality Society, Green Society and LGBTQ+ Society. Each of these Societies have also been consulted and involved in the formation of wider College policy.

REFLECTIONS FROM FORMER STUDENTS... The Forder programme enriched my time at St Dunstan’s providing me with some incredible opportunities and experiences. Taking part in the ceremony at the Menin Gate as part of the Corps of Drums and performing on the stage of the Hammersmith Apollo were both highlights. Performing a play with the rugby team to raise awareness of male mental health was an important moment as were the many CCF expeditions. So many experiences that I still cherish today. Completing my DofE awards and being in the CCF gave me self-confidence because I knew what I could endure and achieve if I worked hard, which served me well when I moved away from home, for university in Liverpool and had to adapt to a completely different environment.

The co-curricular music programme at St Dunstans gave me the opportunities to partake in such a breadth of experiences. Before leaving school I had led a chapel choir, performed as a soloist in an oratorio, and been a part of three different orchestras, giving me an incredible resume for my musical endeavours at university.

Taking part in sport, CCF and the DofE in particular over the seven years I was at St Dunstan’s gave me many positive experiences which helped shape the person I am today. For example, all of these activities put me outside in physically and mentally challenging environments which forced me to show resilience and push myself in order to complete them.

My co-curricular experiences have given me so many unique things to put onto a CV and have helped me gain employment whilst I was at school and also after. Another great thing about participating in these activities are the friends you make whilst you’re doing it and the people skills which you develop. This helped me to make new friends easily when I moved to university.

I really appreciated the opportunities of being part of orchestra and choir from Year 7 all the way to Year 13. Participating in a music group is a great way to get to know other pupils in the school and offers experience of many genres of repertoire. The occasions for leadership roles, collaboration, and development of confidence in performance, provide enduring skills.
