Drama

Made in Dagenham

T

he highly anticipated production of Made in Dagenham took place between the 15-17 March, with the immersive and abstract reinterpretation, pushing the boundaries of Drama in the College. Students put an unprecedented number of hours into rehearsals, as well as undertaking additional research into the life stories of women of the period, so that they could truthfully portray and encapsulate the struggle for equality at that time.

Audiences were overwhelmed by the slick choreography and consistently focused emotional engagement of the actors, with special mention being reserved for the talents of Jack Hall and Izzy Mackie. Their engaging performances drew us into the intimate world of the protagonist and her family. This production was a marker of intent and clearly reveals a talent pool well beyond the realms of school drama, with the promise of much more to come next year. Huge congratulations go to all involved – both students and staff alike.

The Amazing Adventure of Superstan

W

hat a great performance by Year 4 with The Amazing Adventures of Superstan. It was the first Junior School production to be put on at the Catford Broadway Studio and the children rose to the occasion. There was music, dancing and many a joke!

Art

Year 11 Barbican

Sixth Form Tate Modern

Year 7 Courtauld Gallery

Year 11 GCSE artists visited the Barbican to see the Boom for Real exhibition. This featured the NeoExpressionist artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work and the students carried out some great colour and materials research, to inspire their textile projects.

Year 12 & 13 artists ended the week with an evening visit to the Tate Modern to see its first solo Picasso exhibition. With over 100 examples of the artist’s work, students were able to get a glimpse of Picasso’s personal life, following his artistic journey throughout the year of 1932. It was a successful and much-enjoyed visit by all.

Year 7 students were given guided tours around the general collection in the Courtauld Gallery at Somerset House. They listened to talks on four different paintings from artists such as Degas, Rembrandt and Manet and engaged in some ‘compare and contrast’ activities. The trip was rounded off with a visit to the gift shop.

Lent 2018

GCSE and A level students: The Saatchi Gallery Year 11, 12 & 13 artists spent a fun morning at the Saatchi Gallery in Sloane Square. The general collection features mixed-media works, sculptures and paintings which inspired the students into thinking and developing mind maps for their exam projects.

CCF

CCF Army Range Day On Wednesday 20 March five members of staff and 16 cadets spent the day live-firing on the MOD range complex at Hythe. The morning was spent zeroing the weapons in preparation for the afternoon’s competition shoot and (after the ever-popular range stew, prepared by the College catering team) the competition shoot went very well. Cadets were shooting from the 300m, 200m and 100m firing points. For some of

the cadets this was their first time on the range and I am pleased to report that many of them achieved very good scores. However the highest score of the day went to Cadet Fred Surey in Year 10 with an excellent score of 38/45. With over 2000 rounds being fired on the day all the cadets enjoyed themselves and put into practice all their Skill at Arms training here at the College.

Events Air Quality Event On Friday, the Junior School Head Boy and Head Girl were invited by the Mayor of Lewisham, to their annual Air Quality Event. The morning was incredibly informative, with pupils completing a quiz to show what they had learned about sustainable travel and how it has a huge impact on the environment. Activities also included route planning to avoid polluted areas, designing green spaces around schools and writing environmental ‘pledges’ for our school. We look forward to creating a school action plan in the upcoming weeks to put these ideas into action.

St Dunstan’s Diploma Graduation On Friday 23 March we held our inaugural Diploma Graduation Ceremony. Middle and Senior School students, Year 13 parents, teachers and Governors attended in the Great Hall to celebrate the considerable achievements of our first Diploma cohort. The ceremony paid tribute to each student’s individual and unique Diploma journey, before students were presented with their Diploma certificate. Mr Johnson, Mr Hewlett and Peter Coling (Chair of Governors) each gave their endorsement to the incredible work going on in the Sixth Form. The ceremony was followed by a drinks reception for staff, students and parents. Lent 2018

World Book Day Pupils in the Junior School celebrated World Book Day by coming to school dressed as their favourite book characters. From the Queen of Hearts, to Sherlock Holmes – the outfits were superb!
