Events Tottenham FC Partnership In February, St Dunstan’s was delighted to announce a new partnership with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club to create a Player Development Programme for students aged between 11 and 18. Tottenham Hotspur’s Global Football Development team will work alongside staff from St Dunstan’s College to deliver authentic training methods developed within the Club’s Academy, designed to help students reach their full potential. Club Ambassador Ledley King visited St Dunstan’s College on Tuesday 5 February to officially launch the new and exciting partnership. During his visit, Ledley joined St Dunstan’s pupils, parents and staff, along with children from other local primary schools for a community football tournament.

BBC Question Time comes to St Dunstan’s BBC’s flagship political show Question Time was filmed at St Dunstan’s College on Thursday 28 February. St Dunstan’s Great Hall was transformed into the BBC set with the famous panel, audience seating, cameras and lighting. During the day the production team ran two sessions with St Dunstan’s students. The first was a talk with the production team on staging and filming. The students got to experience what life is like on the Question Time panel and also to see what happens behind the scenes, with the pupils taking hold of the cameras and sitting in with the production trucks. Later on in the day, a group of students got to have their moment with presenter Fiona Bruce as they took part in a sound check and show rehearsal. Fiona put the students through their paces asking them their thoughts on major political topics such as Brexit.

Timeline Corridor

11+ post offer Reception

Royal Response

This term, we were delighted to unveil our new timeline corridor celebrating the College’s rich history from its move to Catford in 1888, to the present day. The display includes a detailed timeline and various historic artefacts from the archives.

Our 2019 admissions cycle came to a successful end with our 11+ Post Offer Reception on Tuesday 26 February. More than 200 guests filled the Great Hall to hear more about life at the College from the Headmaster and staff members of the Senior School.

Our Reception classes were delighted to receive a reply from TRH The Duke and Duchess of Sussex in early January. This came after the young students had sent them Christmas cards to mark their first Christmas as a married couple. The card read: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex thank you for the very kind message you sent for Christmas. This was most thoughtful of you and greatly appreciated by Their Royal Highnesses who send their best wishes for Christmas and for the New Year’.

Red Nose Day

Junior School Movie Night

Our Prefect Team sold Valentine’s treats in the student hub area to mark the special day. The gifts were then delivered by our very own cupids to students, staff and teachers.

The Charity Committee marked Red Nose Day on Friday 15 March. The students sold red noses throughout the day in the student hub area.

This year’s junior movie night took place on Friday 8 February in the Great Hall. A fantastic time was enjoyed by all with popcorn and one of the children’s favourite movies, Chicken Run.

Chicago opens Our Senior School production of Chicago, High School Edition, opened on Wednesday 20 March with a special community performance. 150 guests including councillors, local heads, charity representatives and former pupils attended the event.

World Book Day On Friday 8 March pupils celebrated one of the most popular events of the year in the Junior School by dressing up as a variety of interesting words in order to help expand their vocabulary. Each class decorated their classroom door in the theme of one of their favourite books and they enjoyed participating in a carousel of activities in their sections.

Years 3 & 4 Storytelling

Heritage Ambassadors

Former pupil Peter Snowdon visited the College on Tuesday 5 February. During his visit, he explored his old school, met with Mr Hewlett and had a chance to look through the archives.

Stories were brought to life during this exciting, interactive workshop. The pupils explored tales, getting into role as fantastic mythical creatures from faraway continents.

This term, our Archivist Mr Johnstone launched the College’s Heritage Ambassador Programme. A group of students take part in various activities in the archives doing research and helping to preserve our historic files.

Historian Izzi Lawrence

International Women’s Day

Izzi Lawrence, who is a well-known historian and comedian, visited the College on Wednesday 6 March to give a talk to our senior students about public speaking and history. Her talk featured stories from her own journey as a history presenter as well as the do’s and don’ts she learned from stand-up comedy.

Students marked International Women’s Day on Friday 1 March by attending a day of workshops hosted by Lewisham Council. This included speeches by Members of Parliament including Lewisham MP, Janet Daby. Our Sixth Formers made short videos about why it is such an important day. These videos can be found on our Twitter page.

RPE Masterclass

Pre-Prep Drama Workshop

The College was delighted to welcome students from Bonus Pastor Catholic College to St Dunstan’s on Wednesday 20 March for a Religion, Philosophy and Ethics Masterclass. During the session, the pupils took part in various debates and activities with our RPE department.

On Tuesday 15 January, the Pre-Prep had a special drama workshop with the company Perform. The young children learned about the importance of recycling and looking after our environment. Our leader, Super Dupa, took us on an amazing adventure that involved lots of movement, storytelling and most of all laughter.

Year 3 Stone Age to Iron Age The pupils of Year 3 became Neanderthals and some of the first Homo Sapiens for the day. They looked at tools that were used by our early ancestors and tried out different hunting techniques to catch the woolly mammoth in the Prep playground!

Year 5 Out of this World! In the Lent term, Year 5 delivered an ‘Out of this World’ Showcase performance for the Junior School and parents that consisted of a ‘How to’ guide for living on the International Space Station, a trip to space with Laika, the first dog in space, and gravity defying dance moves to spectacular space tracks. Friends of SDC Quiz Night

The Headmaster, Mr Hewlett, attended the CCF parade on Monday 4 February to make a special announcement.

The annual Friends of St Dunstan’s Quiz Night took place on Friday 15 March at the Jubilee Grounds. It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by all and the team look forward to future events.

The entire Contingent was delighted to see Lt Gemma Davies receive her medal in recognition of her 12 years’ service to St Dunstan’s College CCF. In January 2006 Lt Davies took over as Officer in charge of the Royal Navy section, improving standards and putting in place an exciting and relevant training programme.

Diploma Graduation Ceremony

Year 9 Real Game Day

Jubilee Ground Pitch Success

The second Diploma Graduation Ceremony took place in the Great Hall on Friday 29 March. The Headmaster paid tribute to Year 13s hard work and success saying: ‘They leave us with great promise for whatever the next stage of their journey brings.’

Our Year 9 pupils got a taster of what life after education would be like on Thursday 31 January with Real Game Day. During the day, pupils took part in a variety of sessions including life and interview skills.

Our Jubilee Ground pitches were honoured with MyLocalPitch’s February Outstanding Sports Facility Award. Jamie Foale, Co-Founder of MyLocalPitch, commented: ‘St Dunstan’s Enterprises Jubilee Sports Ground is dedicated to providing locals with a fantastic grassroots sports experience and the team thoroughly deserve this recognition.’

Year 5 Art Exhibition Earlier this term Year 5’s artwork was celebrated in an Exhibition which preceded their Showcase. Their wonderful works of art were displayed in the Great Hall foyer and included Ancient Greek pots and plates, colourful Marc Chagall inspired Surrealist images and some lovely still life oil pastel drawings.

Holocaust Memorial Day Our College community paused to reflect on Monday 27 January, to mark this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day. Students and staff attended a service in the Great Hall delivered by our Chaplain, Canon Boswell.

GCSE Choices Evening The annual GCSE Choices Evening took place on Thursday 7 February. Parents and students heard more from senior staff about all of the subjects on offer for the next part of their St Dunstan’s journey.

Community Service and Charity Goldsmiths Community Award Competition Regional Final

Science Week

Four of our students were selected to take part in the Regional Final of the Goldsmiths Community Award Competition. Maia in Year 8 and Polly, Amelia and Ottilie in Year 12 will present the school’s community work to a judging panel, followed by questioning.

The bookcase at Catford Bridge Station is full of books and looked after really well by Year 12 students Gordon and Daniel.

Local primary school students were invited to visit the College to mark Science Week for a session delivered by Centre of the Cell.

Music Prep Choir attend Blackheath Prep’s Celebration of Singing Festival The Prep Choir were delighted to be invited to participate in Blackheath Prep School’s first ever ‘Celebration of Singing’ Festival. The biggest challenge was selecting just over half of the wonderful Choir to represent the College, because the venue couldn’t fit them all in! They sang with seven other schools and received some great feedback from the audience.

Lent Teatime Concert The annual Lent Teatime Concert took place on Thursday 28 February. Students, parents and staff filed into the music block to hear the delightful sounds of the young musicians.

Art This term in Art... This term has been another busy and exciting one for the Art department. There have been regular visits to world-renowned galleries including the Tate and the Royal Academy (left). Students have taken part in various workshops for printing and life drawing. We have also been joined by visiting artists including Liorah Tchiprout (right) who led a session on printing.

Trips Year 10 visit Body Worlds

Kew Gardens

Nursery to Moon Lane Books

Year 10 PE GCSE students had the opportunity to see anatomy and physiology come to life at the Body Worlds Exhibition in London.

Our Year 12 scholars visited Kew Gardens on Monday 25 February. The students were able to take in the amazing biodiversity of Colombia through a beautiful display of orchids in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

Our Nursery pupils visited the Moon Lane Bookshop in Forest Hill on Wednesday 13 February. During the trip, the young pupils looked around the store and enjoyed a story time session.

Ski Trip

Classics Trip to Naples & Rome

A group of our Year 11 students visited the University of Oxford on Monday 14 January to learn more about life as an undergraduate at one of the UK’s oldest institutions of higher education.

Staff and students were fortunate to visit Austria over February Exeat for another St Dunstan’s Ski Trip. An amazing experience for all.

Our Classics students got the chance to explore the streets of Naples and Rome during February Exeat. They visited iconic sites such as Paestum, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and took time to visit the Amalfi Cathedral.

Scholars’ Retreat

This term, Year 6 have visited three different places of worship: the London Central Mosque, St Paul’s Cathedral and BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir.

On Tuesday 5 March, Year 6 participated in a Study Day at the British Library called ‘Introducing Research: Question, Think, Do’ in preparation for the Independent Research Projects which they will be undertaking in the Trinity Term.

Our new scholars got the chance to head down to Dorset during February Exeat. During the trip, the students explored the local area and took part in various workshops.

Year 10 chemists head to Oxford Year 10 students visited Oxford for a day of Chemistry fun as part of the festivities taking place in honour of The International Year of The Periodic Table. They got a taster of what it is like to work in an undergraduate lab by using UV/Vis spectrometry to determine how contaminated some water samples were.

National Theatre Trip In January, our Year 5 and 6 children were treated to a backstage tour of the National Theatre. They were wowed by the fantastic props, set making and seeing the workings of the different performance areas.

National Space Centre Our Year 7 and 8 students visited the National Space Centre in Leicester in February. The students were greeted by a message from astronaut Tim Peake, before exploring the Centre and taking part in a space mission.

CCF Ypres Memorial Trip During Exeat, our current cadets, members of the Dunstonian Association and members of staff visited Ypres to remember the hundreds of students who lost their lives during the Great War. The students took part in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate and visited the Tyne Cot Cemetery which is the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the world.

Inaugural Drill Competition On Monday 11 March cadets from both the Royal Navy Section and Army Section took part in the inaugural Rifle Drill Competition. The competition, which was sponsored by 151 Regiment and the Marketors, was won by the team representing the Army.

Biennial Inspection The CCF Biennial Inspection took place on Wednesday 27 March. A highlight of the afternoon was the Parade around the College, which was attended by pupils in Reception, Year 7 and Year 8. Special guest Commodore Hughes was also given a tour of the training stands by Coxswain Hall and RSM Fenner.

Sport Introducing boys’ hockey

Senior netball success

Lewisham Cross Country

The introduction of the new MUGA at the Jubilee Ground has seen the launch of boys’ hockey at the College. In spite of being relatively new to the game, the boys trained hard and went on to play their first games at the England Hockey Tournament.

This term has been the most successful in recent memory for the Senior Netball Squad, with 1st and 2nd teams achieving notable wins over Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar, Blackheath and Highgate.

In February, an amazing 19 runners placed high enough at the Lewisham Cross Country Championships to go on and represent London in the regional round.

Rugby wins for the U13s

Huge congratulations to Ben and Callum, who were both selected for the Kent Hockey squad, two of only 24 boys selected from across the county.

St Dunstan’s have had the pleasure to host Sainsbury’s School Games netball, rugby and football this term.

A great rugby sevens season for the U13s saw them become Lewisham Champions and then go on to win all five of their matches at the Kent Sevens Tournament.

Year 7 represent SDC

Congratulations to Illy who represented Kent at Allianz Park, the home of Saracens.

Since January, every student in Year 7 has had the opportunity to represent the College against other schools. Fantastic early experiences of competition in sports including football and netball.

Swimming success at Bath Cup Once again our top female swimmers reached the finals in both events at the prestigious Bath Cup competition hosted at the Olympic Pool. The girls went on to finish 6th and 7th out of the 70 schools competing.

Reach Fitness Project This term has seen the culmination of our exciting Reach Fitness Project, which has aimed to equip our Year 10 students with the right movement base to build on in future years.
