Sport

Nursery Sports Day

Pre-Prep Sports Day

Prep Sports Day

Reach Fitness Project

The Nursery children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in running races, welly throwing (or ‘wanging’ as it is traditionally known!), space hopper bouncing, the egg & spoon race, quoit balance, teddy bear relay and of course the baby pram race.

Pre-prep enjoyed Sports Day in Houses for the second time at the Jubilee Ground. The traditional picnic followed some fantastic running, jumping, throwing, dribbling (luckily with a hockey stick!) and many other exciting events, in which each child represented their House.

Another memorable House Sports Day took place on a warm, yet enjoyably overcast day. After a plethora of exciting sprints, jumps, throws, bounces and endurance events, Stuart claimed the title for the 7th year running.

The planning and delivery of staff CPD has taken place, in preparation for the Year 10 Strength & Conditioning project that will run for Year 10 next year. The project is one-of-a-kind and led by Strength & Conditioning Coach, Richard Tidmarsh, owner of Reach Fitness Gym.

Headmaster’s XI

So You Want to Be a Pro

London Schools’ Gala

Forty Club and MCC Cricket

Another hard-fought victory was claimed by the staff, in their annual game against the 1st XI at the SDC Summer Fair. Special mention should go to top scorer, Mr Linfield, who will also be leaving us this year.

Professional triathlete, Sam Proctor, visited SDC to give a group of young athletes advice and guidance on the journey towards being an elite sportsperson.

Congratulations to the Year 6 students who competed at the London Schools’ Gala. A special mention should go to James and Lucius who reached the finals, finishing 2nd and 7th respectively.

It was a privilege to host the Forty Club and the MCC for cricket matches against the 1st XI. The young St Dunstan’s team thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a tremendous amount.

Community Service and Charity Barratt London Card Design Competition Congratulations to Aley (Year 7) for winning the Barratt London Card Design Competition. Her design now features on the welcome pack for the new residents of the Catford Green Development Homes. Well done to all students who took part, with Inaya and Maia winning 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Lewisham Young Carers The charity committee were keen to support the Lewisham Young Carers, who help young people aged between 8-18 years old who look after parent(s), sibling(s) or other relatives. Our main fundraising events were Commemoration Day and donations during assemblies. In total, we have raised £786.51 and 10 euros. Thank you to all who have supported this cause.

Music

Musicathon

Choral and Orchestral Concert

In April, St Dunstan’s College hosted 24 hours of continuous music-making in the Great Hall, in aid of Brass for Africa. Students from the pre-prep to Sixth Form, parents and staff took part in this amazing event, with ten students playing music all through the night.

A moving performance of Handel’s Messiah contributed to an ambitious concert at St Pancras Church, performed by the massed choirs, with solos from Izzy Mackie, Molly Swift, Rachel Evans, Beth Fitzpatrick, Eleanor Hickey, Mr Oldfield and Mr Hewlett.

This event brought our running total for Brass for Africa to £6,235.76. Congratulations to everyone involved for their courageous efforts

The Symphony Orchestra ignited the audience with the first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, followed by Party Piece, featuring the inspiring piano soloist Rachel Evans DipABRSM.

Strings Masterclass

Ascension Day

String players at the College were treated to a masterclass by violinist, Jessica O’Leary. The string ensembles and soloists learnt a lot from this special guest, who focused on technique and performance practice.

The Chapel Choir sang beautifully at All Hallows by the Tower. With older students on study leave, younger members of the choir led a full choral evensong and it became clear that the future of singing at St Dunstan’s is in safe hands. A great achievement.

Music Chamber Concert The outstanding talents of the College orchestral strings, guitar and percussion students, were showcased at St Catherine’s church in Hatcham. More chamber ensembles than ever before were performed at this event, as well as a number of illustrious soloists. The evening concluded with a massed strings group, including students from the prep and senior school, in a special arrangement of Sway.

Refectory Concert This charming and eclectic concert featured all the ensembles in the school, giving the audience an opportunity to celebrate and bid farewell to our Year 13 musicians: Wui Jin Lee, Zak Ileiwat, Peter Robson, Isla Cummings, Richard Bartlett, Hannah Cleverley-Lynch and Izzy Mackie. Notable highlights were the Leavers’ Jazz group performing Haydn’s Farewell Symphony, in which each member of the orchestra exited the stage in turn, during the piece. The wind ensemble’s 70s disco medley included a dance demonstration by three, mystery male members of staff!

Festival Concert The Arts Festival finished in style with the Festival Concert at the Broadway Theatre, featuring the very best musicianship from across the College. The Brass ensemble and Big Band opened the evening with a bang, and the Latin American theme continued with the Festival Orchestra playing pieces from West Side Story. A senior vocal quartet formed Breathe with great sensitivity and feeling. The evening concluded with the wonderful Festival Choir singing highlights from Evita.

Year 7 Adventure Week

Year 9 Adventure Week

The Year 7 trip to the Isle of Wight was a roaring success. After an exciting foot ferry trip over to the island, they arrived at the PGL Little Canada Centre, greeted by their fantastic reps Ben and Royce. The following four days were action-packed with challenges that pushed the students out of their comfort zones, both mentally and physically.

Year 9 travelled to Matlock in the Peak District, for a busy week of adventurous activities. The week was split between the JCA Mount Cook Centre and a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Experience that was run by Adventure Expeditions - our providers for Gold Award Expeditions at the College. This was a new programme and the positive feedback from students and staff, indicate it was a great success all round.

Events Sixth Form Ball

T

he Sixth Form Ball took place on the last Saturday of term. This year’s theme was The Great Gatsby and the evening began with welcome drinks and serene piano music in the College’s Foyer, before a delicious three-course meal in the Great Hall. During the meal there were a number of thank you speeches and some rather inventive awards presented to members of the Sixth Form (and one to Mr Fieldhouse!) The first part of the evening was followed by a Gatsby themed after-party in the Jubilee Ground marquee, where students danced (and gambled!) the night away in style.

Leavers’ Day Year 13 enjoyed a special programme of events for their last day at the College, which included a Bucks Fizz breakfast; a final assembly with Mr Fieldhouse; a church service led by Canon Boswell and then a fun-filled afternoon in the sun at the Jubilee Ground, with a BBQ, drinks and a huge bouncy assault course. Drinks were kindly sponsored by the Old Dunstonian Association (ODA), who also announced the winner and runners-up of the coveted Albam Exorna award. All in all, the day provided a fantastic send off for the Class of 2018.

Years 1 & 2 Circus Workshop Day

CCF Contingent Dinner

KS1 had a fantastic time watching and taking part in their very own circus, as part of their IPC entry point.

The annual CCF Contingent Dinner was an outstanding success, with Major Paul Herlihy from ISI regiment Royal Logistic Corp as the principal guest. He addressed the audience with a speech about the exciting prospects of our new partnership with the regiment next year.

Year 2 Camping in School

Sports Awards Dinner

Year 2 enjoyed their first experience of a residential trip by camping on the school fields. They met the wonderful team from Oakley Adventures and completed a series of fun activities with them over the course of the evening.

The sporting community gathered for their annual celebration of achievement at the Sports Awards Dinner. Inspiring words from guest-speaker and Rio Olympic silver medallist, Olivia Carnegie-Brown, gave our students food for thought.
