ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE
THANK YOU FROM THE HEAD
St Dunstan’s College was founded on benevolence and ambition. Benevolence that saw a group of parishioners from St Dunstan’s in the East, along with a number of other partners, see fit to fund a new school in the growing suburbs of London. Ambition to create a school that was ‘ahead of its current time’. A school that would enable students to ‘find out and do’ rather than simply sit and listen. A school that would introduce a radically different curriculum, containing Science, Technology and Engineering. A school that would relish a broad, liberal approach to education, introducing one of the first truly co-curricular programmes in the world. A school that would enlarge access by supporting children from a range of backgrounds and means.
St Dunstan’s today is proud of this heritage and seeks to use it as a platform for its ongoing growth and development. Following a phase of significant improvement across all aspects of the school’s life, we now look to a new chapter. Our priority is to enable even further access to our education through a culture of giving to our ambitious bursary programme. This is one of the ways through which we will challenge and showcase the role independent schools can play in forging a dynamic, contemporary society. We will also continue to build facilities that support not just an excellent education but an ambitious approach to partnerships and community engagement.
We are excited by what the future holds for St Dunstan’s and our vibrant Lewisham community. I invite you to be a part of it.
With sincere thanks Mr N P Hewlett Head

WHY I GIVE TO ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE
With a qualified gratitude for my SDC education, and maintaining a passing interest in matters Dunstonian, I was moved and deeply impressed to view Mr Hewlett’s courageous address in February 2021, celebrating LGBTQ+ week and defining current SDC values: kindness, generosity, diversity and inclusion.
I have since enjoyed reconnecting with the excellent school that St. Dunstan’s College has become and my wish to re-engage with the SDC educational vision is twofold:
•
To be available to mentor SDC pupils in the joys of self-employment - and of business building;
•
To offer assistance to the current formidable SDC Development Team to create a greater number of sustainable/ organic Sixth Form bursaries, for the benefit of gifted local youngsters who would not otherwise have the requisite financial support to enable such a fantastic educational opportunity.

“ “
As a student at St Dunstan’s College between 1975 and 1985, I benefited from Bursary support throughout my Middle School and Sixth Form years. It is the primary reason a child, son of immigrants, from a council estate in Charlton, went to Cambridge University. I am now back at the College as a Governor and a member of the Development Board. I would like to pass the baton, so that other students can benefit from the Bursary Fund.
The Glynne family as a whole have had a long association with the College in various roles and my donation for the Performing Arts Centre was to give something back in gratitude for the many happy years we enjoyed.

I see a dynamism and vision at the school that is relevant both to the modern era and to the school’s location. The school now exudes a sense of inclusivity and an awareness of its social responsibility to educate pupils in the roundest sense, not just to teach them how to pass exams.
I think that is a vision worth supporting.

OUR IMPACT SO FAR...
The LYLA Project
The College is committed to making a difference in the Borough of Lewisham. Through a generous donation, the Lewisham Young Leaders Academy project (LYLA) has gone from strength to strength in the past 12 months. The purpose of the project is to empower tomorrow’s black African and Caribbean leaders, who meet every Saturday at the College.
We officially opened the College’s first ever theatre, built on the footprint of the Design and Technology Laboratories, in March 2022. The theatre can seat around 150 and is a versatile venue for receptions, drama, dance and lectures.
In addition, we have doubled the performing arts space of the College by opening three new studios. One is dedicated to Martin Preston, a visionary member of staff, who inspired several generations of Dunstonians.
Rugby Fives Courts
We are looking at rebuilding state of the art Fives Courts which had to be demolished when the STEM centre was built. We have secured some funding from the Rugby Fives Association as well as through some initial donations. The timeline for the rebuild has yet to be approved.

OUR BURSARIES TRANSFORMING LIVES
Education transforms lives. Expanding the funds we have for bursaries is a top priority for St Dunstan’s. As a result, our immediate ambition is to introduce and embed amongst the Dunstonian community a long lasting culture of giving which will enable us to build a sustainable and long term bursary fund.
The College supports over 50 busary students every year, but also turns away at least 10 otherwise deserving students for lack of funds.
If we raise £3m over the next five years, we will have been able to double the number of children from our local area to benefit from education that would otherwise have been entirely inaccessible to them.
It takes £20,000 to support a full bursary student in the senior school for a year. In this context, large gifts will be transformational but a collective effort can be just as meaningful. For example:
Number of donors Monthly gift 1 year + gift aid 5 years + gift aid Outcome
270 £25 £101,250 £506,250 5 bursary students
270 £50 £202,500 £1,012,500 10 bursary students
270 £100 £388,800 £1,944,000 20 bursary students

It cannot be overstated how great an impact St Dunstan’s College has had on my life, and the lives and pathways of many pupils in a similar position, who without financial support would have been unable to attend St Dunstan’s. The College offers so many opportunities for building character, from nurturing intellectual interests through the curriculum and beyond, to connecting with and growing from relationships with like-minded, passionate pupils and teachers.
