The program proceeded with a moving testimonial by Jennifer Fulwiler who shared the impact Relevant Radio had on the conversion of both her (former atheist) and her husband (former Baptist). MISSION MESSAGE
02
Be Joyful - Give the Gift of Faith! Dear Relevant Radio Family,
We are living in joyful and exciting times! Not only are we approaching the joyful season of Christmas, but we as a Church have entered the unprecedented Year of Faith! This is not the time to be sad or depressed about the state of the world. Instead, we as practicing Catholics should be extremely grateful that God gave us the gift of Faith. There are so many lost souls in the world who lack the Faith necessary to live meaningful and joy-filled lives in these challenging times. And it’s our task to bring the joy of Jesus to these souls, just like Mary did. It is because of Mary’s faith, through her ‘yes’, that we were blessed with the joy of the Christ Child. The Christ Child came to give us the gift of Faith. If Jesus, who is God and knows everything and created everything, chose to give us the greatest thing he could think of – Faith – what better gift can we give to our loved ones? We as Catholics need to get excited about our Faith and share it with everyone. That is the whole point of the Year of Faith. This doesn’t mean we need to drop everything and move to a third world country and begin a mission, although that can be a good thing for those who are called to do that. The Year of Faith means that we need to consciously share our Faith with the people in our lives. We need to step out of our comfort zone and share the gift of Faith that we have been given. You might ask, “How can I do that?” You can do your part by making a greater effort to share the Faith with your own family members, friends, and coworkers, not necessarily by preaching at them, but by learning the Faith better yourself and becoming a holy and charitable example of Faith. Be sure to purchase a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read it! Then get involved in your parish, as much as you are able, because parishes always need help with their many projects and programs. A parish is like a big family, and its members help make it a thriving and active and faithful community. Another thing you can do is help Relevant Radio! We are fortunate at Relevant Radio to be able to share the Faith with countless souls through the airwaves. An easy way you can participate in the Year of Faith is by supporting our mission both prayerfully and financially. We hear testimonials all the time from listeners who have been changed by our programming, and it’s due to your prayers and your dollars which are helping to convert many souls back to the Faith. Thank you for your witness to the Faith! You give us hope by your faithful practice of the Faith and by your support of our mission. We’re in this together. So let’s enter this Advent Season with joy and gratitude that God has been pleased to give us the gift of Faith!
With prayers and best wishes,
Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, JCD Executive Director P.S. One thing Relevant Radio is doing special during the Year of Faith is featuring “the incredible, nearly impossible CateQuizTM!” It’s an opportunity for students to call in and answer questions about the Faith and win money for their school or parish. More info can be found on our website, www.relevantradio.com, keyword “Quiz.” Be sure to tune in at 7:20 AM CT during Morning Air beginning January 7th through April 12th!
Anton Raphael Mengs was born in 1728 in Aussig, Bohemia, into an artistic family of German origin. Mengs studied Italian Renaissance painters, was inspired by classical antiquity, and worked to establish the dominance of Neoclassical painting. At the same time, the influence of the Roman Baroque remained particularly strong in his religious paintings.

Vatican
II Awards Nativity Scenes: Keeping Christ in Christmas By: Elizabeth Groshek, Relevant Radio Communications Specialist
(Left to right) Bishop Hying, retired Bishop Sklba, Beardsley, Benes, and Archbishop Listecki.
On October 23, 2012, Relevant Radio 100.1 FM Network Production Associate and Chief Operator, Matthew Beardsley, was honored at the 22nd Annual Archbishop’s Vatican II Awards as the recipient of the award for Service in Communication. Beardsley received the award as a tribute to his extraordinary service to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee via the airwaves of Relevant Radio 100.1 FM. It was a special evening of celebration for Beardsley and fourteen other recipients in multiple categories. The evening began with dinner in the Cathedral atrium followed by pictures of Beardsley with Archbishop Jerome Listecki, Bishop Donald Hying, retired Bishop Richard Sklba, and Relevant Radio Chief Sales Officer, Bob Benes, in the Cathedral. Afterward, there was a prayer service at which the awards were presented. Relevant Radio is proud to congratulate Matthew for his remarkable achievement and we are truly blessed to have him as part of our team! About the Awards: The Vatican II awards were established in 1991 to honor men, women and young adults who exemplify the Catholic Church’s vision set forth in the Second Vatican Council. Criteria for receiving the award: The recipient must: • be skilled in the use of modern means of social communication (news media, electronic and print, advertising, public relations, promotion, writing, public speaking, theatre, film) OR • be skilled in interpersonal communication (community building, conflict resolution, small group facilitation, reconciliation and healing) • reveal Gospel values in approaching the above social or interpersonal spheres.
Growing up, one of my favorite activities to prepare for Christmas was displaying our family’s nativity scene. Carefully, I would take my time setting up the small, wood carved figurines in the miniature stable under our tree - their thoughtful placement was a representation of how my young mind envisioned the miraculous scene, the way it appeared that very first Christmas. I remember placing the angel near the top of the stable holding the “Gloria” banner for all to see. The shepherds and wisemen were positioned further out, making their way to see Him. Mary and Joseph were arranged on either side of the manger, both gazing down intently.
It was my family’s tradition to leave the manger empty until we returned home from Mass on Christmas Eve. Then it was time for me to place baby Jesus in the manger. At that point, I would huddle all the little statues around the Christ Child. Setting up the nativity scene was a reminder to me that the Savior of the World was born that night in Bethlehem, and it was His birth that we were celebrating on Christmas. What is the Origin of the Nativity Scene? The custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche, or manger, for Christmas Eve of 1223. The tradition was, and still is, intended to cultivate the worship of Christ.
Blessing of a Christmas Manger or Nativity Scene In some cases, a blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time. According to the USCCB website, when the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another family member. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. R/. Who made heaven and earth.
you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 2:1 (lines 1-8) or Isaiah 7:10 (lines 10-15, the birth of Emmanuel). Reader: The Gospel of the Lord. R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. R/. Amen.
The leader prays with hands joined: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation

YEAR OF
Memorare Milestone: Together we can reach 1 million! In August of 2011, Relevant Radio® began an online meter to keep track of Memorares prayed by our listeners. The meter was created not only to encourage listeners to pray the Memorare, but to keep count for a special intention - to end abortion in America. Then, on November 13, 2012, Relevant Radio hit a milestone on the Memorare Meter with over 500,000 Memorares prayed! While reaching 500,000 Memorares was a remarkable achievement, the ultimate goal is to reach 1,000,000! Participation is easy. All one has to do is keep track of Memorares prayed and then visit www.relevantradio.com, keyword “Memorare,” to add prayers to the meter. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, Protectress of the Unborn, hear our prayers!

Good Reading Guide
A good book is a great gift idea for the holiday season, especially for children and young adults. But how do you know the right kind of book to give someone?
The Good Reading Guide is an exciting new development online, intended to help readers source quality literature for adults and children. The site ensures that every book placed in the subject categories is researched, reviewed, and recommended. With an abundance of literature available, the Good Reading Guide takes the time to find out which books are worth reading. It was founded to research, review and recommend the best literature of the past and present, and to provide information to help readers to decide which books are most worth their time, and their children’s time. Benefits of the Good Reading Guide: 1) It reviews a wide variety of contemporary literature in terms of its compatibility with Christian or naturallaw values. 2) It covers a variety of genres, including fiction, biographies, children’s literature, current issues, parenting,
relationships and Catholic spirituality for adults and children. 3) All books are reviewed by trusted scholars with backgrounds in English literature, as well as Thomistic philosophy. 4) Each book is tagged for age appropriateness and subject themes and allows users to find recommendations for specific readers, as well as information about popular books. 5) It has a 7 day free trail and then is only $25 for a subscription. Though there are plenty of “clean reading” blogs and sites, many have different criteria; even those run by Catholics don’t tend to be as culturally broad or include reviews of bestsellers and new releases. Other reading sites often allow people to sift through hundreds of reviews and find similar books, but fail to indicate if/why the books are worth reading. The Good Reading Guide is an excellent means of matching the right book with the right person at the right time and is especially useful for educators and parents.
