Annual Report 2017

Letter from the President Greetings, Serving in the role of President for over five years now, I have been able to experience firsthand what a truly unique organization Steamboat Dance Theatre (SDT) is. I feel privileged to share our successes of the past year and our vision for the future with you today. In many communities, especially remote, rural ones, if you can’t afford to dance you don’t. In Steamboat, SDT not only fosters the opportunity for dancers (beginners and advanced) to experience various forms of dance education and but we also provide opportunities for non-dancers to increase their appreciation for dance. But what makes SDT truly vibrant is not just our mission it is our community – our Board, staff, dancers, local businesses and non-profit partners all make SDT the vibrant organization that it is. It is the loyalty and dedication of our community that has allowed SDT to reach some great milestones programmatically and organizationally this year. For example, in 2017 we were able to provide over $15,000 in funding through our dance scholarships, host an extremely successful Annual Concert, and offer master classes, community dance classes and much more. We were also able to retain our staff person, diversify our funding portfolio, and recruit new members. All told, this year has demonstrated how with hard work, dedication and passion SDT can continue to evolve into a more effective and beneficial organization for the community. I invite you to learn more about our organization and get more involved whether you love to dance, love to watch dance, or love to learn about dance. Happy dancing,

Kristen Jespersen President

2017 Annual Concert RECAP Steamboat Dance Theatre’s Annual Concert is the SDT’s biggest community dance event and fundraiser. Proceeds from this event directly benefit other programs within the organization, most notably, the Scholarship Program. The concert provides a unique opportunity for members of the community to produce, choreograph, dance, and perform. The 2017 cast was made up of 100+ performers.

The theme of this year’s show was The Human Condition, which can be described as moments or experiences that shape us as Beings through keys life events and situations such as birth, loss, ambition, despondency, longing to be accepted, and being outcast for being “different. All of these situations take us down a path of growth and development that dictate how we function in this world. The 13 choreographers were asked to interpret themselves through this concept. Each choreographer exceeded expectations as they shed a layer of themselves to create powerful messages through dance. This year’s show was dedicated, in part, to our dear friend Salvador Mendoza. May he finally be at peace and his memory live on through sequins that shine brighter than the brightest star. Annual Report 2017

This year the Production Team chose to include SDT’s scholarship students in the concert. Scholarship students 18 and under were invited to participate in weekly rehearsals to set a student choreographed piece for the concert. Kailee Davis, our Sponsor A Dancer was assigned the role of lead choreographer. She chose the music, choreographed, and staged the work in collaboration with her fellow 8 dancers. The piece was a hit and left the audience wanting more! We couldn’t be more in awe of the talent these young dancers have and we are fortunate to be able to help them grow as artists, with the help of our generous community.

Scholarship Program Through the Scholarship Program SDT grants scholarships to cover a percentage of the cost of dance classes for applicants that can demonstrate a certain level of financial need. Scholarships are granted to people of all ages and dance levels. Through this program, we offer two types of scholarships – 1st Position and 5th Position Scholarships. The 1st Position Scholarship, our most popular scholarship program, supports students who want to attend local dance classes but require financial assistance in order to be able to do so. The 5th Position Scholarship is for the more dedicated dance students that are interested in participating in national competitions or taking more advanced dance classes that are not offered in Steamboat. These requests are larger than those of the 1st Position Scholarship because they cover the costs of enrollment fees for competitions and tuition for workshops and intensives.

As shown in Table 1, the 1st Position Scholarship requests have grown exponentially over the past few years - since 2009 the total 1st Position scholarship amount granted has more than tripled. This growth demonstrates the strong demand for this program in the Yampa Valley.

One primary goal for all of our scholarships is to provide all eligible applicants with at least 50 percent of their request. In 2017, we budgeted $13,500 but received over $22,479 in requests. PO BOX 880924 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO 80487 • 970.367.7807• INFO@STEAMBOATDANCETHEATRE.ORG

Sponsor A Dancer is another way to give the gift of dance to that special dancer. Through the Sponsor A Dancer program, donors will be able to contribute to individual dancers. The studios have nominated these dancers based on leadership, talent, commitment, and financial need. Read about their passion for and commitment to dance on our website!

Steamboat Dance Theatre has helped me and my family immensely with funding my dance. Without the funds that I have received, my opportunities as a dancer would be significantly limited and I would not be able to take so many of the amazing classes that I am taking now with these funds. The joy that dance gives me is irreplaceable and I am so grateful to have such an amazing program in Steamboat that helps so many dancers pursue their passions. -Tia Kavanaugh

We are beyond thankful for SDT and the scholarships that they grant to families of dancers. Because of the scholarships we receive from SDT our daughter is able to pursue her passion of dance. Without the scholarships, we would not be able to provide as many opportunities for our daughter to grow and excel in dance. Their generosity for our community is admirable and very appreciated. Thank you, Steamboat Dance Theatre!

3rd ANNUAL PROM

Each year, Steamboat Dance Theatre celebrates National Dance Day for a week. We offer at least one class a day for the five days leading up to National Dance Day – the last Saturday of July. The classes range from jazz dance, ballet, tap to Irish, hip hop, and contemporary dance, as well as fitness classes. All classes are open to the public and available to all ability levels.

SDT IN THE SCHOOLS

This program is designed to reach dancers beyond the classroom by enriching and educating them through different dance experiences other than the studio life. We serve a population of roughly 200 people with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and lifestyles. Included in the Community Enrichment Program is our School Outreach program. In 2016, SDT offered 2 master classes, hosted 2 community dance classes and one community dance party (Prom), offered a week of free National Dance Day classes, and offered 1 dance class to the local Boys & Girls Club.

NATIONAL DANCE DAY

Through the Community Enrichment Program SDT partners with local businesses and other non-profits, the school district, and local professionals to serve a wide range of diverse opportunities to dancers and non-dancers alike. The Community Enrichment Program offers a Dance on Film Series, Master Dance Classes, school enrichment, and general community dance events, such as the celebration of National Dance Day.
