2016 Annual Report
A Letter from the President Greetings, Steamboat Dance Theatre is a truly unique organization and I feel privileged to share our successes of the past year and our vision for the future. SDT not only fosters the opportunity for dancers
(beginners and advanced) to grow and non-dancers to increase their appreciation for his dance. Nevertheless, what makes our organizations truly vibrant is our community –our Board, limited staff, dancers, local businesses and non-profit partners make SDT what it is. It is the loyalty and dedication of our community that has allowed SDT to reach some great milestones programmatically and organizationally this year. For example, in 2016 we were able to provide more funding through dance scholarships than ever before, host an extremely successful Annual Concert, and organize our first community dance party. We were also able to retain our staff
person, diversify our funding portfolio, and recruit more members than ever before. All told this year has demonstrated how with hard work, dedication and passion SDT can continue to evolve into a more effective and beneficial organization. I invite you to learn more about our organization and get more involved whether you love to dance, love to watch dance, or love to learn about dance. Happy dancing,
Kristen Jespersen President

WORDS FROM LONGSTANDING MEMBER, GINA
GINA TOOTHAKER BOARD MEMBER CHOREOGRAPHER DANCER
When asked why I have participated in Steamboat Dance Theatre for over 30 years, the answer is easy. This is my dance family, these are my closest friends, and it’s my creative outlet. I did not grow up dancing, and SDT has given me the opportunity to develop as a dancer and choreographer. I have contributed 13 pieces to our Annual Concert over the years, and I love the process of taking ideas out of my head and bringing them to life in the studio. I am always amazed when it actually works! It is a privilege to work with such talented dancers in our community, and it’s also an honor to be a part of the process for a first-time dancer and see their growth and excitement as they find their place in this amazing group of people. Steamboat is so very fortunate to have this organization and all the opportunities it provides!

2016 ANNUAL CONCERT & THEME The Annual Community Dance Concert is SDT largest fundraising event. Proceeds from the concert directly benefit the organizations other programs, most notably, the Scholarship Program. The concert provides a unique opportunity for members for the community to produce, choreograph, dance, and perform. The cast is made up of 100+ performers each year.

LOST & FOUND Dance does not always have to tell a story, as songs do not always have to have lyrics. There is no right or wrong way to perform, just two very different results. Sometimes dance can give an abstract take on certain situations, such as relationships, emotions or historical events or it can be just for fun. We asked the choreographers to choose an object, large or small (literal or abstract) that is found at a yard sale, as inspiration for the piece. The object did not need to be a prop, but rather a starting point for the creative process.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Through the Scholarship Program we grant scholarships to cover a percentage of the cost of dance classes for applicants that can demonstrate a certain level of financial need. Scholarships are granted to people of all ages and dance levels. Through this program, we offer two types of scholarships – 1st Position and 5th Position Scholarships. The 1st Position Scholarship supports students who want to attend local dance classes but require financial assistance in order to be able to. 5th Position Scholarships supports dance experiences at an elevated level. This particular scholarship funds tuition/registration fees for dance conventions, workshops, and competitions at a statewide and national level.

Dance means more to me than simply something I enjoy to do after school. For me dance is everything. It’s art, exercise, activity, life training, but most importantly, dance is a way for me to let go of the rest of the world and express myself in any way that I wish. This was especially true for me last year. I had a difficult time trying to figure out where I belonged and who I was supposed to be. I felt as if I wasn't good enough in many ways. As if the things mean people said on the bus ride to school or home were true. As if the things I started telling myself were true. But as soon as I stepped into the studio, all of those things would fall away. I could be myself without feeling judged. I could say how I felt and let everything go without saying a word. Dance continues to do these things for me all the time. Dance helps me slow down my mind and relax. Helps me figure out where I fit into the world and who I want to be rather than who people tell me to be. When I dance, I don’t feel like I’m under any social pressure or have to live up to anyone’s expectations except my own. Dance allows me to be who I am no matter what, never expects more than my best and never tells me who I should be. When I dance. . . I am free. I hope to someday be able to share what dance is to me and encourage others to see it the same way. I feel that I can only do this if I can continue to further myself in dance and choreography and try to fulfill my career goals.

I love dance. I love that I have found something that makes me, me! The studio is my second home, my peers are my second family, and dance is like a second pair of lungs, set in my chest allowing me to breathe. I wouldn't be who I am without dance. I couldn't imagine a day where I ask myself “When did I get that bruise?” or “I swear I had a hundred bobby pins yesterday”. I love performing, after working so hard. I love when I show myself that I can do things I didn't think I was capable of doing! I need to dance. I need it to breath the air in my lungs. I need it to show my dad that he is fighting so hard so that he can see me grow as a dancer. I want to show him that even though our world has turned upside-down, one thing has continued to stay steady for me; dance. I will never stop dancing, no matter what life throws my way. I love to dance; it's what I do. I will be dancing when I am old beyond my years, because dance fills me with pure joy. I want my dad to be proud of me, and I want to be proud of myself. I need to keep dancing and keep working my hardest to reach my dreams of becoming a professional dancer.
