By all accounts, Brian “Tigger” Stothart was an elite boater, a funny guy and a thoughtful friend. But his real passion, friends said, was his wife, Valerie, and their children, Samuel and Sophia. “In all the things he enjoyed doing, he was best at being a family man, being a dad,” Valerie Stothart said. Steamboat Springs resident Brian Stothart, 35, disappeared June 13 while running the Encampment River in southern Wyoming with four others. Stothart was a C-1 boater, which meant he paddled a canoe. The group he was with found his boat, and Carbon County Sheriff’s officials found nothing. Friends searched for him every weekend after he disappeared, and a sheriff’s deputy found Stothart’s body Saturday. The “Tigger” nickname fit Stothart, his wife and friends said. “He was just, I can’t even explain, a huge ball of energy,” said Dan Walsh, who had been searching for Stothart. “He was like Tigger, seriously, just bouncing off the walls and always excited and happy and making the best out of any situation. I’ve never seen that kid down and complaining, never. He was always the one who came and cheered you up.” Walsh said he met Stothart 15 years ago. Imagine not having the use of your thumbs. Could you ride a bike? Grip or swing a golf club? Send a text message to a friend? Forty to 60 percent of your hand function depends on having a normal, healthy thumb, certified hand therapist Sue Winters, of Yampa Valley Medical Center, said. “The thumb is so important to hand function that if a thumb is lost in an accident, surgeons may replace it with a toe,” Winters said. “The thumb is a very complicated joint, and thumb pain is very common. About 20 percent of our hand therapy patients are seen for a painful thumb.” Thumb pain is more common in women than among men, and it may begin at any age. Usually, it is a result of sudden injury, tendonitis or arthritis. Activities that use repetitive movements — such as playing video games or sending text messages — also can cause thumb pain. Winters said some people naturally have loose or lax lig-

Other causes of thumb pain include ganglion cyst, skier’s thumb, bowler’s thumb or a fracture. The joint at the base of the thumb that allows for swivel and pivot motion is called the basal joint. Because of its design, the basal joint can wear out after years of normal use. It is common for

osteoarthritis to develop in this joint. Pain often can be felt at the basal joint during pinching or gripping movements, Winters said. To avoid or minimize thumb pain, you can do several things. First, exercise. There are eight thumb muscles, and like all muscles in the body, they can become stronger and more flexible with exercise. A hand therapist can guide you through several exercises to do regularly. Next, protect your thumbs from injury. Winters said energy conservation and joint protection are key factors to keep in mind. “Avoid pounding things with your hand,” she said. “You can reduce stress to the basal joint by using tools and gadgets, such as an electric stapler or mounted jar opener. “If you do leather work, use a straight punch instead of a rotary punch. When slicing or cutting, use a sawhandle knife or spring-loaded shears. Even dishwashing can be painful, so try using a See Thumbs, page 13

State Bridge Lodge lives again Concert scheduled for July 25, 26 to bring energy to burned-down venue

At 6 a.m. June 2, 2007, Scott Stoughton got a phone call he doesn’t expect to forget. State Bridge Lodge — the music venue, riverside resort and all-kinds-welcome gathering spot just south of the Routt-Eagle county line where Stoughton had started as a musician and worked his way up to become general manager and a partner — had burned to the ground. The fire was quick, and the stage, bar and everything else housed in the turn-of-the-century historic lodge were gone. Stoughton could live with the fact that the place went up — it was old, and as Stoughton said Friday, a “tinder box.” What’s troubled him for the past two years is the news that came about a week after the fire. “I think it hit me harder when I found it was arson. I remember that phone call, and I couldn’t believe it,” he said. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office closed the case in August 2008 with no suspects. Despite the damage, Stoughton drummed up a feverish level of support to get the State Bridge grounds clean. That summer, he pulled off four weekends of concerts with no permanent stage or building, he said. On July 25 and 26, Stoughton — along with event coordinator Ted Tilton, community liai-

Tickets are $15 each day or $25 for the weekend; part of the proceeds will go to Realm of Caring, an organization that helps get musical instruments to schoolchildren.

The trio of CSU Frank dignitaries headlines an alumni and friends event from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Holiday Inn. Washington Democrats appear to falling back on an old reliable answer to the “public option” dispute in their health care plans: When you can’t change the issue, change what you call it. “The only debate on that is what it will be called: a patient option, public option,” said House Speaker Nancy Pilosi in a Thursday news conference. “Write in your suggestions.” Page Suggestions? How about “banana?” After all, new administrations often rename things. This one is no exception. Team Obama already has renamed the “global war on terror” to the less ambitious “overseas contingency operations.” Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has transformed the oxymoronic “toxic

assets” into the much more enticing and sturdy-sounding “legacy assets.” Obama lashes “lobbyists” until he invites them to participate in fact-finding or negotiations as “stakeholders.” But would a “public option” by any other name offer as many benefits? That’s become the focus of this summer’s big health care debate. A “public option” would simply be this: a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers. Think Medicare, but offered as a choice you could choose instead of your present private health insurance, if you have any. You don’t have to take it, if you can find something better. But if you can’t, it’s like a good friend — always available even if he occasionally needs to sleep on your couch. Obama likes the public option, as do a majority of other Americans, depending on how you ask the polling question. A Quinnipiac poll a few days ago, for example, showed 69 percent support for a

public/government-run option, but only 28 percent said they would opt into it. I would like to think that gap in responses indicates high hopes for their current insurance plans coupled with a desire to have more choices and competition to hold down costs. Reducing costs is one of three “bedrock requirements for real health care reform” that Obama gave to Congress to fill in the details. The other two were to ensure “quality and affordable” care and guarantee choice, “the freedom of every American to choose their own plan and doctor — including the choice of a public insurance option.” But Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel seemed to sing a slightly different tune early last week. He said a health bill without a public option might be acceptable as long as there is “a mechanism to keep the private insurers honest. ... The goal is non-negotiable; the path is.” See Page, page 9

Socialism has lost energy through overuse Say what? Progressives erupted in howls of protest. Obama paused in his Moscow trip to say once again that he strongly supports the public option, even if he does not want to draw a line in the sand on it. That’s just as well, for this is Washington. The less firm the language and conditions for negotiation, the more likely an idea like a public option can survive the inevitable assaults by the private health insurance companies. So they can change the name, but to what? Republicans and other conservatives already call it “socialism,” but the S-word has lost some of its energy through overuse. Some of us are old enough to have heard the

same howls of protest against Medicare in the 1960s and more recently against expanding SCHIP, the federal health insurance program for children. Each has become one of the government’s most popular programs. As insurance companies have charged more for less coverage — and millions more people have lost private coverage entirely — calling a public insurance option “socialism” only makes socialism sound good. No wonder the private health insurance companies and their Capitol Hill allies fear a public option. They say the public won’t like it, but their bigger fear is that we the public will like it better than what the private market is providing us now. A compromise may well

center on another euphemism: “coop.” That’s short for a nonprofit medical cooperative plan that some top Democrats and Republican moderates see as a possible substitute for a government-run insurance option. Still, hard-line conservatives oppose the offering of any public money to help states set up their co-ops. Many on the right also sniff at a suggested “trigger,” in which a government-run plan would only be employed if certain targets, like cutting costs, are not met by the private market. Stealth socialism, in their eyes. It’s hard to please some people. But, without a public insurance option of some sort, any Obama insurance compromise is going to ring like a hollow victory, no matter what name he calls it.

On Tuesday, the band Sweet Sunny South from Paonia takes the stage for a youth concert at 11 Greene a.m. The concert is titled “Duck Duck Grey Duck” and based on a traditional children’s game —also known as Duck, Duck Goose — in Minnesota. They return at 5:30 p.m. for a family concert featuring old-time music in the style of Grand Ole Opry. In the spirit of this festival season is a night of friendly and interesting classical music Wednesday, featuring the music of Latin and Czech composers. Be aware and prepare for summer play

Blue skies, warm temperatures, trails, lakes and rivers are reasons to get outside, but summer play does not come without risks. Poor preparation and judgment can have serious health consequences, particularly for older adults. The good news is that they have wisdom and experience on their side. With information and awareness, older adults can confidently experience the season’s many rewards. “Age should not be a deterrent to enjoying summer activities — whatever a person feels capable of doing,” explained Dr. David Wilkinson, emergency medical physician at Yampa Valley Medical Center. “However, as people get older, it does take them longer to prepare for and recover from physical activities.”

Heat-related illness

Heat-related illnesses happen when a person’s body cannot control its temperature. Children ages 4 and younger, older adults and people who are obese, ill, have high blood pressure or are taking certain medications are more prone to these conditions. Sunburn, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation and alcohol also can boost a person’s risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heat stoke, the most serious, occurs when a person’s body temperature rises rapidly. It can lead to permanent disability or death if not treated. Warning signs may include extremely high body temperature (103 F or higher); red, hot and dry skin; throbbing headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion or unconsciousness. A person experiencing these symptoms should be moved to a

shady area and cooled as quickly as possible. Emergency medical help should be sought immediately. Heat exhaustion, a milder heat-related illness, can happen after several days of high temperature exposure or inadequate amount of fluids. Symptoms include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, headache, fainting and nausea or vomiting. If untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to a heat stroke. People experiencing heat exhaustion should drink cool nonalcoholic beverages, seek a cool, preferably air-conditioned environment, rest and take a cool shower or bath. A person should seek medical attention if symptoms persist more than an hour. Heat cramps — muscle spasms in the abdomen, arms or legs — can happen to people who are sweating a lot during strenuous activity. They usually subside when a person stops all activity, moves to a cool place and drinks clear juice or sports beverage to replace salt and moisture depleted by sweating. Individuals should seek medical attention, however, if they have heart problems, are on a low sodium diet or whose cramps last more than one hour. The CDC recommends common-sense measures for preventing heat-related illnesses: Drink plenty of fluids, replace salts and minerals, wear sunscreen, pace yourself, avoid activity during the hottest part of the day, use a buddy system and monitor those at risk. “Hydration is an even more important issue for older people because their kidney function may be reduced,” Wilkinson said. “Drinking plenty of water and electrolytes is extremely important in maintaining a healthy metabolism.” Individuals also should be

aware of whether their medications could contribute to heatrelated illness. Medications for Parkinson’s disease, some tranquilizers, diuretics and medications which affect brain function (psychotropics) could increase a person’s risk, according to the CDC.

Sunburn Overexposure to harmful ultraviolet rays can have temporary and long-lasting effects. Sunburns can be mild, causing red, warm and tender skin or severe, causing blistering and swelling. Symptoms usually aren’t apparent until four hours after exposure. Sunburns can be uncomfortable or painful and, if on a large area, can cause headache, fever, nausea and fatigue and contribute to heat-related illness. Too much sun exposure also increases a person’s skin cancer risk and leads to premature skin aging. Chronic exposure to the eyes can cause cataracts and possibly macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness, according to the CDC. It’s not hard to get too much sun in the mountains. UV exposure increases 10 percent with every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. To prevent sunburn, wear a full-spectrum sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of at least 15, which allows a person to be in the sun 15 times longer than normal without burning. Altitude sickness Altitude illness occurs when a person travels to a higher altitude faster than their body can adapt. The best predictor of how a person will respond to a higher altitude is past experience. Susceptibility to illness varies and is not affected by a person’s level of physical fitness, though travelers with medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, sickle cell disease or cardiovascular problems should consult their doctor before traveling to higher altitudes, the CDC notes. The best way to prepare is to be aware of the risks of altitude sickness especially when heading to elevations of above 6,000 to 8,000 feet (downtown Steamboat Springs is about 6,700 feet). Acute mountain sickness is the most common form of altitude illness with symp-

toms resembling a hangover: Headache, fatigue, nausea and loss of appetite. A person should descend if their symptoms become worse while resting, and they should never sleep at a higher altitude. More serious forms of altitude sickness can involve extreme lethargy, confusion and severe breathlessness even at rest. It is critical for people experiencing these symptoms to descend to a lower altitude as these forms can be fatal. Gradual ascents with extra rest days at intermediate altitudes are the best ways to avoid altitude illness, according to the CDC. Medications to help prevent and treat altitude illness also are available.

Talk to your physician about taking over-the-counter pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naprosyn or others. Seek the advice of a hand therapist for taping or splints in order to reduce pain and swelling. An orthopaedic hand surgeon may recommend a cortisone injection and/or surgery for some painful thumb conditions. “Quality of life is the primary reason for surgery, in order to relieve pain and when possible, prevent progressive weakness and deformity,” Winters said. The thumb needs to be flexible and stable for painfree function. It is important to care for your hands and thumbs in order to reduce pain and make them stronger. “If your thumbs are painful, don’t ignore them,” Winters said. “Talk to your doctor or hand therapist to determine what can be done to decrease pain and improve your hand function.”

There are three more concerts tentatively planned for later in the summer; the July 25 and 26 show is definite, and organizers are trying to take the others one at a time, Wolf said. Event coordinator Ted Tilton described the concerts as “one-offs to keep the vibe and the spirit alive.” Tilton said Wednesday organizers have permits for all four concerts but hadn’t finalized the dates. The stage for “State Bridge Lives” will be where the old parking lot was, Tilton said.

Some want to turn over control of State Bridge to a group with a “large nonprofit element” that ultimately would build a bigger, better, facility,

The prospective buyer is in the music industry, and will make his first visit to the area today, Devins said; he did not give the buyer’s name. He declined to give his name or be interviewed, but Valerie Stothart said the account was accurate. The man, using the screen name WyoPadlr1, said the group traveled to just above Damnation Alley without incident. Other people in the party had stopped in various eddies before the spot where they planned to get out of the Encampment to scout the rapids. Stothart tried to make it to an eddy he expected to find behind a large rock on the right. WyoPadlr1 described what happened at about 11:45 a.m. that day: “Brian’s boat was completely perpendicular to the river as he went over the drop, facing right. He appeared to hit a large fan-rock and gain quite a bit of vertical height, then he dropped out of sight. No one saw Brian exit this eddy in his boat. One member of the group, probably the farthest upstream, saw Brian’s boat enter Damnation proper upside down after a considerable time delay (15-20 seconds).” The other boaters searched for him in the area and downriver,

They called Carbon County rescuers, who searched that evening and again the next day in helicopters, in boats, on foot and on horseback. “Where he was and where he missed the eddy it was just a lineup of really bad situations, and it was an accident,” Walsh said. “There was nothing he could do where he was to get out of the situation.” Walsh, Ferguson, Ferguson’s brother, Haugh and other friends have searched for Stothart. Walsh and Ferguson recovered his boot and his helmet, marked “Tig.” They’ve also placed a plaque, photos of Stothart with his family and a life vest on trees near the accident site. Friends have left notes to Stothart on the vest. Searchers were out this weekend on foot, on horseback and in a helicopter. A sheriff’s deputy found Stothart on Saturday, and searchers got him out of the river Sunday, Valerie Stothart said. “It was the persistence, I believe, of Brian’s good friends going up there over and over again … I think it put out the urgency to try to help find him and work together,” she said. Haugh said last week that he knew the risks of boating but still was surprised to hear about the tragedy.

On June 13, Stothart was boating with Jimbo Dickey, Helen Lowe and two Wyoming men they had met. When Brian Stothart headed for the Encampment trip, he left a boating book on a desk, Valerie said. It was open to page 105, which describes the river. “The challenging rapids begin with Entrance Falls, a short ways above Damnation Alley,” the book states. “‘Entrance’ is a steep drop that is hard to see over but is only a IV at medium water.” The river was running high, but not dangerously so, Walsh said. “It’s a really technical river, and Brian is a strong, excellent

music together. Walsh, Stothart and Erich Ferguson spent time together when they all lived in Walton Village. Stothart and Valerie met in 2003 and married Feb. 3, 2004. Sophia Stothart is 3, and Samuel Stothart will be 5 in August. The blue-eyed, sandy-haired pair resemble their dad, Walsh said. “They just look so much like him, it just breaks my heart to see them,” Walsh said. “It’s like looking right at him.” A trust fund has been created for Samuel and Sophia. Donations can be made at Wells Fargo Bank to the Stothart’s Children Trust Fund. The family plans to hold services for Stothart from 4 to 8 p.m. July 30 at Little Toots Park. Double Z Bar & BBQ will cater. Brian Stothart was a stayat-home dad for two years before Sophia was born, Valerie Stothart said. He’d also spent several months with his family after being laid off this year, she said. Together, the four rafted more than 200 miles of river. Darrell Haugh has been friends with Brian Stothart for 12 years and said Stothart was the best open canoeist and C-1 boater he knew. But Samuel, Sophia and Valerie were always more important, Haugh said. He recalled cutting short a river trip because Stothart felt that his wife needed him. “He really lived, lived, lived for his family,” Haugh said.

“He was my No. 1 boating buddy. … It was kind of hard for me to get my arms around,” he said. “I never thought Brian was going to die on the river.” Ferguson said it was natural to try to help find Stothart. “I don’t really have a big, close family or anything, so I take my friendships pretty seriously,” Ferguson said. “So when I heard that he was there, I had to do something.”

He grew up in Florida and Utah and attended high school at the Deck House School in Maine, graduating in 1992. He had been in Steamboat off and on since the early 1990s, Valerie Stothart said. Stothart got his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Fort Lewis College in Durango in 2001, worked at ACZ Laboratories, received his land-surveyor-intraining designation and had enrolled at Great Basin College for a degree as a public land surveyor. Stothart also had taught canoeing, his wife said. Valerie Stothart called her husband brilliant and witty. “I’m lucky to have known him, and I’m lucky to be the mother of his kids,” she said. ed the family since Stothart’s disappearance, she said. Freshies owners Kristy and Scott Fox have given food, as have the Diemers at Johnny B Good’s Diner and the Stotharts’ neighbors. Custom Color helped when Valerie Stothart wrecked her car. “It’s those small acts of kindness, it’s those little things that just keep you going,” she said. They plan to have the services at Little Toots Park because it was near the Yampa River that Stothart loved. He also enjoyed eating at the Double Z, which is why his wife plans to have the restaurant cater the memorial. She said the family was trying to move forward. “We just didn’t get enough time with him,” Stothart said. “Not nearly enough.”

s we hit the midway point of the Major League Baseball season, several things have become apparent. The local ball club isn’t half bad. The managerial change of Clint Hurdle to Jim Tracy has done wonders. What hasn’t totally been seen and doesn’t get enough credit is the work pitching coach Bob Apodaca and hitting coach Don Baylor have done. Apodaca has been criticized from everywhere. But his work with Ubaldo Jimenez, Jorge De La Rosa and Jason Marquis has been nothing short of amazing. Although many of the team averages still aren’t eye-popping, Baylor has proven his ability to work with all the young hitters in the lineup. But what are the Rockies chances? Who are the first half Most Valuable Players and Cy Young Award winners? And of course, who wins it all? First to the Rockies. I think they have the best team built for a long run at the wild card. The team will be battling the second-place team from the NL East (Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and Florida), the second-place team from the National League Central (St. Louis or Milwaukee) plus San Francisco from its own division. First thing, the Rockies are better put together than any of those teams for a deep run. The one problem is within their division. Dropping recent series to the Dodgers and Diamondbacks can’t happen again. But here’s saying the Rockies win the wild card and look pretty good in the playoffs with a top three rotation of Jimenez, Marquis and Aaron Cook. Plus, the bats are bound to wake up. American League MVP — Minnesota’s Joe Mauer. The best pure hitter in the game. Mauer has a chance to flirt with a .400 average, while showing legitimate power for the first time in his career. With the Pyrenees behind him but the toughest rides still to come, Lance Armstrong already is talking about another run next year in the Tour de France. The 37-year-old Texan, coming out of 3 1/2 years of retirement, remained in third place after Sunday’s ninth stage. Astana Armstrong teammate Alberto Contador stayed in second place with about one-third of the race over, and Rinaldo Nocentini, of Italy, held the yellow jersey a third straight day. Armstrong rode deliberately during the 100-mile leg that was won by France’s Pierrick Fedrigo and took cyclists from SaintGaudens to Tarbes and through the Roman Catholic shrine town of Lourdes. “Today was pretty controlled, I thought, although it’s never

easy,” Armstrong said. “It was very hot; the tempo was pretty regular ... We (Astana) just sat there and kind of rode our race.” The seven-time champion’s appetite for competition clearly is not satisfied. After the day’s racing, he was asked on French TV if this would be his last year in cycling’s premier race. “Probably not,” he said. “Maybe one more Tour.” Armstrong, who is riding for Astana without salary this year, previously has hinted he may launch his own team next season. When Astana was hit by financial trouble this year and faced the prospect of being thrown out of the ProTour, Armstrong said he could take over the team with the backing of U.S. sponsors. He now seems a lot further along from his remarks last year when he said the thrust of his return to the Tour and cycling was to promote awareness about cancer, which almost took his life.

A brief look at Sunday’s ninth stage of the Tour de France: Stage: The last stage in the Pyrenees took riders from Saint-Gaudens to Tarbes on a 100-mile ride featuring two big climbs, the Col d’Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet, one of the toughest on the Tour. Winner: Frenchman Pierrick Fedrigo, of the Bbox Bouygues Telecom team. Fedrigo, a 30-year-old rider who won a Tour stage in 2006, came out on top of a two-man battle with Italy’s Franco Pellizotti. Fedrigo and Pellizotti had surged clear with a group of breakaway riders before the 12-mile mark and kept the lead for most of the stage. Yellow Jersey: Rinaldo Nocentini, of the AG2R-La Mondiale team, who held onto the overall lead by finishing in a pack with Lance Armstrong and Astana teammate Alberto Contador. Nocentini is the first Italian to wear the yellow jersey on the Tour since Alberto Elli in 2000. Next stage: Riders will enjoy a rest day in Limoges today. Although Brock Lesnar left behind pro wrestling three years ago to become the UFC’s heavyweight champion, he still hasn’t got all the showtime out of his system. Lesnar stopped Frank Mir with a merciless flurry of punches Saturday night, defending his title in the final bout of UFC 100 on a landmark weekend recognizing the best in his proliferating sport. Lesnar then taunted his fallen opponent, made a twohanded obscene gesture at the

booing crowd and insulted a UFC sponsor, putting an altogether unflattering end on what the league planned as a sparkling celebration of mixed martial arts. The former WWE star just couldn’t resist being a heel, even though he apologized profusely afterward. “I acted very unprofessionally after the fight,” Lesnar said about his second-round victory. “There was a lot of emotion in this bout, (but) I love this company, and I love to fight. I went into the entertainment business for a little while, and I guess there’s still a little bit of it in me.”

There were no such theatrics from Georges St. Pierre, who defended his welterweight title with exponentially more class in an unanimous decision over Thiago Alves in front of the sellout crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Dan Henderson also knocked out Michael Bisping with a single punch in a middleweight upset as the UFC rolled its odometer into triple digits. But Lesnar (4-1) stole the show with what happened after his relentless series of right hands into the face of Mir, who handed Lesnar his only loss nearly 18 months ago.

About one in 150 people infected with the virus develop a serious illness with symptoms such high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, convulsions, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. The symptoms usually show up three to 14 days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito. The illness can last several weeks and result in permanent neurological damage, according to the CDC. Some people infected with the virus will have milder symptoms lasting a few days to several weeks. Most people show no symptoms at all. Although it’s difficult to know in advance whether a person will become ill from West Nile Virus, the CDC notes that adults ages 50 and older do have a higher risk of developing serious symptoms and should take special care to avoid mosquito bites. Prevention measures include wearing insect repellants with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or a chemical known as IR3535; staying indoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active; and wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

Mountain summers host many activities, including hiking, biking, horseback riding and water sports. Each activity carries elements of unpredictability and risk. Overestimating ability or underestimating factors such as weather, wildlife, terrain and the need for safety equipment and supplies, can have serious or potentially tragic consequences. Education and preparation are the best tools for preventing injury and enjoying an activity. For novices, this can come in the form of a guided experience or a well-researched and planned outing. Resources such as the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado State Parks have plenty of maps and trail suggestions, as well as equipment and other safety recommendations. Common sense measures such as checking weather reports, carrying appropriate amounts of water and supplies and being cognizant of skill and health limitations go a long way in making an outing more fun and less risky.
