The turnout for the Downtown Hoedown and Chuck Wagon Chili Challenge exceeded Mainstreet Steamboat Springs’ expectations so much that it ran out of tasting kits halfway through the Sunday afternoon event. The crowd, however, didn’t seem to deter anyone who wanted to attend the event and taste the chili judged by a panel of six in four divisions: red, green, firehouse and other. The event also had seven salsa and cornbread entrants, up from two last year. Sam Bolton, of Broomfield, who was visiting Steamboat for the weekend with his wife and three young children, said they

were looking for something to do and the Chili Challenge sounded fun. “I love it — really good chili,” he said. “There were a lot more people here than I thought — and booths. I thought it was going to be a lot smaller.” And the crowd only seemed to fuel the mood of the 38 chili competitors, an increase from last year’s 27 entrants. Suicide is everyone’s concern

National Suicide Prevention Week, which highlights efforts to prevent suicide, is this week through Saturday. Throughout the United States, there are communities like ours that help educate the public about how to recognize symptoms of suicidal behavior in our friends, coworkers and family members. We strive to give people resources to learn more about suicidal behaviors and what we can do to help prevent this action from occurring. Yet the truth is, many people do not want to talk about suicide or do not think it affects them. Recently, as I was selling tickets for our local Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide program fundraiser, I asked many people to purchase a ticket to help support suicide prevention efforts in Steamboat Springs. The responses varied from

not acknowledging my presence to saying, “I will be out of town” or “I am not interested.” Many people do not want to acknowledge that there is a problem or learn more until it directly affects them. Fortunately, a few people took the time to listen and ask me questions about what they could do. My hope is that more people will want to learn about suicide prevention before it becomes too late. Suicide affects everyone. According to national statistics, suicide is the ninth-leading cause of death annually. The high number of suicides occurring in Steamboat Springs in recent years is a concern. Individuals who commit sui-

cide span a variety of ages, genders, geographic locations, and socio-economic statuses. What are the symptoms of suicide, and how can you get help if you or someone you care about is showing the signs of suicidal ideation? Many people who commit suicide may feel hopeless and have the “typical” symptoms of depression. Others may not seem depressed but will begin to socially isolate themselves by pulling away from family and friends. Other signs to look out for in a possibly suicidal person include any observed change in mood, behavior, activities, sleeping and eating. The individual may show signs of irritability or expressed feelings of hopelessness/helplessness and diminished interest in activities. The individual may have gone through a traumatic event such as a significant death, See Monday Medical, page 11

Hayden School District Food Services Director Steve Carlson will begin his first full year when classes begin Tuesday. Carlson, who started working for the district in January, is trying to change what students in Hayden eat.

He worked for six years at Harwigs/L’Apogee in downtown Steamboat Springs and has owned and operated Big Air Catering for the past three and a half years. The food service director position for the Hayden School District offered him a unique opportunity, Carlson said. “I’ve cooked for 35 years, and this was something totally different than anything I’ve done

before,” he said. “I looked at this as a new challenge.” And it has been a challenge, he said. Carlson said he must adhere to state and federal government nutrition guidelines while working within a tight budget. See Hayden, page 14

A chance Steve Carlson took last year epitomized the Hayden School District food service director’s approach to his new job. During lunch one day, Carlson filled a dispenser that charges students 50 cents for cookies with fresh broccoli instead. He wasn’t sure what to expect, but two middle school students approached him holding dollar bills and asked if they could get change. Carlson gave the two students the broccoli for free, which opened the floodgates. “Believe it or not, four and a half pounds of broccoli was literally gone in 10 minutes,” he said. “It’s amazing the power of peer pressure. I had to run out to the store to buy more broccoli for the high schoolers.” Carlson, a Routt County resident for 20 years, the last 11 in Hayden, will begin his first full year as food service director when the 2009-10 school year begins Tuesday after being hired last January. Superintendent Greg Rockhold said he approached Carlson about the vacancy after he catered the district’s Christmas party last year. Carlson agreed to apply for the job and was chosen from 18 candidates, Rockhold said. “Having Chef Carlson on board has added a whole new dimension,” he said. “… He’s

From canned peaches to pears, beans to beets and much, much more, the canned goods competition at this year’s Routt County Fair experienced a huge increase in submissions, which according to articles in several newspapers and magazines, is the norm across the country this year. Some experts attribute this interest in preserving food to the economic recession, which has brought about a big resurgence in vegetable and fruit gardening, while others attribute it to the organic movement and the desire to control and better understand what is being served at the table — while supporting local produce and lowering one’s carbon footprint. Here in Routt County, if you took July’s canning and preserving class presented by extension agent Karen Massey at the Routt County Cooperative Extension office, you would have learned that it also is rewarding and just downright fun. Preserving the bounty from a garden and enjoying it through the winter was once the norm. Even if you don’t have a garden, preserving the produce from the markets — commercial or farmers — and opening a jar of sweet cherries or peachSee McLeod, page 13

That would be a fateful decision for his presidency, and a group of former intelligence officials and other experts now is reluctantly going public to warn that more troops would be a historic mistake. The group’s concern Kristof — dead right, in my view — is that sending more American troops into ethnic Pashtun areas in the Afghan south may only galvanize local people to back the Taliban in repelling the infidels. “Our policymakers do not understand that the very presence of our forces in the Pashtun areas is the problem,” the group

said in a statement to me. “The more troops we put in, the greater the opposition. We do not mitigate the opposition by increasing troop levels, but rather we increase the opposition and prove to the Pashtuns that the Taliban are correct. “The basic ignorance by our leadership is going to cause the deaths of many fine American troops with no positive outcome,” the statement said. The group includes Howard Hart, a former CIA station chief in Pakistan; David Miller, a former ambassador and National Security Council official; William J. Olson, a counterinsurgency scholar at the National Defense University; and another CIA veteran who does not want his name published but who spent 12 years in the region, was station chief in Kabul at the time the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, and later headed the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. “We share a concern that the country is

driving over a cliff,” Miller said. Hart, who helped organize the antiSoviet insurgency in the 1980s, cautions that Americans just don’t understand the toughness, determination and fighting skills of the Pashtun tribes. He adds that if the U.S. escalates the war, the result will be radicalization of Pashtuns in Pakistan and further instability there — possibly even the collapse of Pakistan. “We’ve bitten off more than we can chew; we’re setting ourselves up for failure,” said Rory Stewart, a former British diplomat who teaches at Harvard when he is not running a large aid program in Afghanistan. Stewart describes the American military strategy in Afghanistan as “nonsense.” I’m writing about these concerns because I share them. I’m also troubled because officials in Washington seem to make decisions based on a simplistic caricature of the Taliban that doesn’t match See Kristof, page 9

TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES

After decades of criticizing public schools as places where hardly anybody learns anything, suddenly conservatives are upset that a 15- to 20-minute webcast in schools might teach too much. That’s because the webcast is by President Barack Obama. The quarrel began after Education Secretary Arne Duncan e-mailed principals that the president would speak on Tuesday over the Page Internet, on C-SPAN and via satellite “directly to the nation’s schoolchildren about persisting and succeeding in school.” Somehow that useful message, coming amid the heat of an unrelated health care debate, immediately was interpreted by Obama’s conservative critics as a sneaky

way to enlist children into promoting his political agenda. Or, as Jim Greer, chairman of the Florida Republican Party, put it, “As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology.” Mercy. It takes a different planet from the one on which I live to find “persisting and succeeding in school” to be socialist ideology. But conservative pundits were just getting warmed up to the biggest political panic since former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accused the House health care bill of mandating “death panels.” Blogger Michelle Malkin, accused schools and teachers unions as using students as “little lobbyists.” David Boaz, executive vice president of the libertarian Cato Institute, blogged that the Obama administration is “trying to push its president-worship onto 50 million captive schoolchildren.” American Values

President Gary Bauer declared, “Tuesday may be a good day to sit in on your child’s classes.” The Education Department didn’t help matters with the darkly suggestive wording that someone, dare I say, stupidly included in a set of classroom activities posted on the department’s Web site to accompany the speech. It suggested that students “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.” A White House spokesman acknowledged that the original was “inartfully worded.” Translation from government-ese: Somebody messed up. Out went the old wording. The updated version asks students to “write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals.” Good. Ask not what you can do for the president, children. Ask what you See Page, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

what I’ve found in my reporting trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many Pashtuns I’ve interviewed are appalled by the Taliban’s periodic brutality and think they are too extreme; they think they’re a little nuts. But these Pashtuns also admire the Taliban’s personal honesty and religious piety, a contrast to the corruption of so many officials around President Hamid Karzai. Some Taliban are hard-core ideologues, but many join the fight because friends or elders suggest it, because they are avenging the deaths of relatives in previous fighting, because it’s a way to earn money, or because

they want to expel the infidels from their land. Frankly, if a bunch of foreign Muslim troops in turbans showed up in my hometown in rural Oregon, searching our homes without bringing any obvious benefit, then we might all take to the hills with our deer rifles, as well. In fairness, the American military has hugely improved its sensitivity, and some commanders in the field have been superb in building trust with Afghans. That works. But all commanders can’t be superb. That may be why the troop increase this year hasn’t calmed things. Instead, 2009 is already the bloodiest year for American troops in Afghanistan — with

four months left to go. The solution is neither to pull out of Afghanistan nor to double down. Rather, we need to continue our presence with a lighter military footprint, limited to training the Afghan forces and helping them hold major cities, and ensuring that al-Qaida does not regroup. We also must invest more in education and agriculture development, for that is a way over time to peel Pashtuns away from the Taliban. This would be a muddled, imperfect strategy with frustratingly modest goals, but it would be sustainable politically and militarily. And it does not require heavy investments of American and Afghan blood.

Race doesn’t have much to do with backlash can do to help your own futures. Yet, as much as some observers suspect bias in this backlash against the nation’s first black president, I don’t think race has much to do with it. Presidents Ronald Reagan, in 1988, and George H.W. Bush, in 1991, gave similar televised addresses, amid some criticism from Democrats about propagandizing on the taxpayers’ dime. That’s politics. Besides, values do matter. If conservatives heard that Bill Cosby, for example, were delivering the address, I think the right would be delighted. I cannot

guarantee that all of his political views would please conservative stalwarts. But his five-year-old crusade for self-help and personal responsibility has given voice to values on which the Obama left and the Malkin right can find rare agreement: the importance of good parenting. Here I speak from hardlearned experience. Politics may come and go, but the day-to-day job of raising kids brings out the conservatism in us all. That’s why a lot of parents welcome Obama’s messages to kids. Many hope for an “Obama effect,” the role modeling that might help our offspring to

expand their definition of “cool” to include academic excellence, family obligations, parental responsibilities and, heaven help us, pulling their pants up. And for African American children, in particular, there’s another important message in Obama’s famous unflappability: Don’t let racism or suspicions of racism dim your determination to succeed. Obama received a huge political boost last year when he espoused such Cosby-esque values that Americans tend to share across racial and party lines. Maybe that’s what his conservative rivals are worried about.

Discuss precious possessions sooner than later

Editor’s note: This article originally was published April 27. It has been updated for accuracy. Tamera Manzanares

FOR THE STEAMBOAT TODAY

Sometimes it helps to be outspoken when making important decisions. At least that was the case for Bobbi Beall, who got together with her two sisters and mother to decide how to divide their mother’s possessions. One sister had her heart set on a ring, another wanted a chair she had helped refinish. Beall, the oldest, received her mother’s wedding ring. “It was funny. … We really just talked about what we wanted so there weren’t any hurt feelings,” Beall said. Now she’s tackling the process with her husband’s family. “I think that’s the key — really talking about it amongst the kids, and asking, ‘OK, is there really something that’s important to you?’” Beall said. Whether a parent or relative is transitioning to a simpler lifestyle or planning for their death, families inevitably must make what are often tough choices about possessions that have monetary and/or sentimental value but aren’t included in a will. For the best outcome, these conversations and decisions should take place before an elder passes away or becomes too incapacitated to discuss the issue. “You have to start the conversation to know what everybody values … and to avoid conflicts when decisions have to be made,” said Routt County Extension Agent Karen Massey, who specializes in family and consumer issues. Decisions about nontitled property can lead to even more family disagreements than

issues of titled property or financial wealth, according to the University of Minnesota Extension Service, which developed the program “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate.” The program, which offers families practical suggestions for passing on personal possessions, is the basis for a presentation Massey will give Sept. 16 and 30 at Hayden Wellness Days. Because the idea of leaving their home already is emotional and difficult for older adults, it’s understandable that children or relatives may be reluctant to bring up the subject of that person’s belongings. That’s why it’s best for the elder, or owner of the possessions, to begin the conversation, Massey said. “This workshop is meant to help people think about what to do with their possessions and start the dialog with their families,” she said. Waiting until crisis to consider the emotional and financial value of objects and who is most likely to appreciate them can result in abrupt decisions and negative family dynamics. Massey, who is helping her parents move into an independent living center, said planning for these decisions early on can prevent hurt feelings and also give an older adult a sense of closure. “If (my mother) thought for a second her passing caused trouble in the family, that would be

FILE ILLUSTRATION

Beginning the conversation about who wants or should receive an older adult’s personal belongings can prevent family conflict and help ensure heirlooms or precious items end up with those who appreciate them.

endlessly disconcerting to her,” she said. Conversations about a person’s belongings can prevent assumptions that might lead to conflict and reveal information helping extend past generations’ legacies through objects and stories. “How our parents valued things so much that really weren’t financially valuable, that was kind of sweet to see,” Beall said. If adult children or family don’t know a seemingly everyday item is an heirloom or represents something special, a link between generations could be lost forever. Imagine a great-grandmother’s candy dish or grandfather’s paper weight being sold at a garage sale

for pennies. “Once those things are identified, they take on a new meaning,” Massey said. “Then you feel good about having those things in your home and making sure you share them with people who value them.”

For more Routt County Extension Agent Karen Massey presents, “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?” from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16 and Sept. 30 during Wellness Days at The Haven Community Center. Lunch precedes the presentation and is available for $2.50. All are welcome. Massey also will give the presentation from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 and 28 at the Oak Creek Community Center. Lunch precedes the presentation. For more information, call 8717676. Canning demonstration set for Saturday es some bleak day in January or March, for example, is like opening the door to summer. If you have never canned or it has been a while and you are rusty, there are some absolute rules: Follow the directions, and use only tested recipes. This is not the time to get creative and add a dash of this or delete a cup of that, as any modification could result in an unsafe product. Nor is it a good idea to dust off your grandmother’s or Aunt Bess’ recipe, but if you are determined to do so, first take it to Massey or another expert and ask for advice. Canning something safely follows a scientific and rigorously tested route, utilizing everything from specialized equipment such as a boiling-water or steam-pressure canner, to the right-sized temporized glass jars with the

proper lids and bands, to specific utensils such as a jar lifter, and my favorite — a lid wand — all designed to make the process easier and safer. Additionally, in our area, we need to pay attention to altitude and make the proper adjustments for more processing time as predetermined in charts. There are a number of current resources you can utilize to get going — from Massey at the Extension Office, 879-0825, who is happy to field any question; to the “2009 Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving;” to numerous other books, such as the 2006 University of Georgia’s “So Easy to Preserve” book of recipes and tips. Even the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Complete Guide to Home Canning” needs to be a post-1994 edition. The latest 1996 revision can be downloaded for free

2010 marks 100th anniversary of scouting Peretz added that it’s also a monumental year because 2010 is the 100th anniversary of scouting. Some special events will be planned, he said, including a blue-and-gold banquet in February. Melissa Gray, the pack’s trea-

surer, said parents would be able to sign up their children for Cub Scouts at the carnival. The annual membership fee is $85, and boys don’t have to start in the first grade but can get involved at any level up to the fifth grade. “We’re hoping that this will become an annual event,” Gray said. “Something boys will come

to, have fun and talk their parents into signing them up.” Call Gray at 846-1295 to RSVP for the carnival.

Fewer acres could be taken off irrigation Officials hopeful that conservation could keep water flowing to more Nebraska farms Nate Jenkins

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LINCOLN, NEB.

Boosting Platte River flows to levels required in a three-state, multimillion-dollar agreement may require less reliance on irrigation shutdowns in Nebraska than originally thought. Officials say they are increasingly hopeful that practices such as crop rotation and more strategic irrigation schedules will help keep irrigation water flowing on some acres, at the same time meeting terms of the agreement between Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.

Early next year, officials plan to launch a study to inventory practices used to reduce water use, how effective they are, and to identify other areas of research. Water-saving measures rather than all-out irrigation shutdowns have been an option under the $320 million, three-state agreement designed to improve wildlife habitat along the river. But discussions with farmers and others, said Jerry Kenny, executive director of the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program, have bolstered the confidence he and others have in the ability of the practices to

help avoid shutting down irrigation on some acres. “The concept is, take as little land as we can out of irrigation to minimize the impact,” on farmers and rural economies that rely heavily on irrigation, Kenny said. “The objective of the program isn’t taking land out of irrigation — there will be some of that, but we hope mainly on land that maybe shouldn’t have been irrigated in the first place.” Kenny said he didn’t have an estimate of how many acres might be spared irrigation shutdowns if water-saving measures farmers would be paid to use become widespread.

Early, rough estimates of how much total Nebraska cropland might be taken out of irrigation under the three-state agreement have ranged from 30,000 acres to 100,000 acres. The Platte River Cooperative Agreement was signed three years ago by the governors of Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. It is designed to benefit endangered and threatened species, such as whooping cranes, and provide water users in the Platte River Basin with coverage under the Endangered Species Act without giving up their access to federal water, land or funding.

Attendance for the first seven days of the Colorado State Fair is up 4 percent from last year. State Fair general manager Chris Wiseman said people looking for economical activities not far from home may be behind the boost. The fair began Aug. 28 and runs through Labor Day. Almost 487,000 people visited it last year. In its 137th year, the fair remains an economic anchor for

the Pueblo area, where manufacturing jobs have come and gone. The fair is making money after having cleared $3 million in debt and after reversing a string of losses earlier this decade with the help of a $650,000 annual state appropriation.

Public option plan gets blurry

The Obama administration’s bottom line on a government health insurance option blurred Sunday as White House officials stressed support but stopped of short of calling it a must-have part of an overhaul. As President Barack Obama prepares for a Wednesday night speech to Congress Obama in a risky bid to salvage his top domestic priority, no other issue is so highly charged. Obama’s liberal supporters consider the proposal for a public plan to compete with private insurers do-or-die. Republicans say it’s unacceptable. It’s doubtful the public plan can pass the Senate.

White House political adviser David Axelrod said Obama is “not walking away” from a public plan. But asked whether the president would veto a bill that came to him without the option, Axelrod declined to answer. The president “believes it should be in the plan, and he expects to be in the plan, and that’s our position,” Axelrod said. Asked whether that means a public plan has to be in the bill for Obama to sign it, Axelrod responded: “I’m not going to deal in hypotheticals. ... He believes it’s important.” The biggest challenge Obama faces in his prime-time address is to take ownership of health care legislation that until now has been shaped by political conflicts in Congress. Lawmakers return this week from a summer break that saw eroding public

support for an overhaul and contentious town hall meetings in their districts. The idea of a public plan has become a symbol for the reach of government in a revamped health care system. Supporters say it would give workers and their families similarly secure benefits as older people now get through Medicare, while leaving medical decisions up to doctors and patients. The plan would be offered alongside private coverage through a new kind of purchasing pool called an insurance exchange. At least initially, the exchange would be open to small employers and people buying coverage on their own. Insurers say they could never compete against the price-setting power of government. Employer groups warn it would undermine the system of jobbased coverage.

NFL picks galore

T

he NFL season begins Thursday, which can mean only one thing: It’s time for my incredibly popular NFL picks column. Truth is, people don’t read my picks column for forecast accuracy. In fact, I’m usually just pitifully wrong. Two years ago, I picked the St. Louis Rams to make the Super Bowl. They went on to win three games. Last season — and this was a new low in the history of picking games — I had the Detroit Lions making the playoffs. Gulp. But a new season brings new hope, and here’s how I see the NFL season shaking out. The only guarantee is that my beloved Buffalo Bills will miss the playoffs — again. Of course, I’m not sure I want them to make it. The last time they did, I was a freshman in high school, and the Music City (Forward Lateral) Miracle happened. Nothing says consistency like another 7-9 season. I hate football.

AFC East

New England 11-5 Miami 9-7 New York 6-10 Buffalo 3-13 Overview: We won’t talk about the Bills, but the Patriots are again the class of the division. Miami has one of the best front offices in football. The Jets will struggle with a rookie quarterback. Tom Brady is back and ready to prove something. And Buffalo could be this year’s Detroit. Aren’t you glad you’re not a Bills fan?

AFC North

Pittsburgh 12-4 Cincinnati 10-6 Baltimore 8-8 Cleveland 7-9 Overview: Pittsburgh is just too deep to not win the division. I think Cincinnati will rebound from last season and put up some big offensive numbers. Joe Flacco will have a sophomore slump for Baltimore, and See Graham, page 22

At least for the time being, Tabor Scholl will hold house bragging rights over her brother Tyler. Tabor, 12, out-sprinted Tyler, 8, during the 5-kilometer portion of Sunday’s 10K at 10,000 Feet. The event, part of the Steamboat Springs Running Series, featured 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races. In the 5K event, the Scholl siblings ran with each other until the last 50 yards. That’s

when Tabor nudged ahead of her brother for first place with a time of 18 minutes, 39 seconds. “It feels very excellent,” Tabor said. “Tyler usually gets the bragging rights.” Tyler, however, wasn’t too upset. He got a side cramp during the final stretch and said sprinting isn’t really his specialty. “She’s a way faster sprinter than me,” said Tyler, who finished first in the 5K on the men’s side with a time of 18:46. “I’m more of a long-distance runner. work really hard. I’m going to try to win the next race.” Ken Rogers (20:16) finished second in the men’s 5K race, and Garrett Edwards (21:15) was third. On the women’s side, Lisa Adams (23:10) finished second, and Hannah Williams (24:14) was third. On a picture-perfect day for running, more than 100 racers

turned out for the 25th anniversary of the race. Both races followed the same route from the Dumont Lake campground up double- and singletrack trails. The 5K course headed toward the iconic Rabbit Ears rock formation. Once runners hit the midway point, they turned around. In the 10K race, a pair of Front Range runners took the top spots. On the women’s side, Littleton resident Lindsay Krause won with a time of See Running Series, page 21

BOULDER

Grant Stucker’s patience finally paid off. The fifth-year senior quarterback made his first start Sunday night and led Colorado State to a 23-17 upset of Colorado, the Rams’ first win in Boulder since 1986.

Stucker barely beat out Jon Eastman last week for the starting job, a year after losing out to Billy Farris. “One thing you’ve got to look at it, 50 years down the road, do you think you could’ve stuck it out, regardless if you get the start or not? It’s something

I didn’t want to have — regret,” Stucker said. “I’m very happy that I was able to have that patience to stick it out.” So are the Rams and their fans, who stormed the field to celebrate the second upset for the Mountain West Conference against a Big 12 team in 24 hours, coming on the heels of BYU’s stunning 14-13 victory against

third-ranked Oklahoma. Stucker threw a 13-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to new running back John Mosure, who also had a 1-yard TD run as the Rams (1-0) took the Folsom Field crowd out early by jumping out to a 17-0 lead. That helped calm down Stucker, whom Rams coach Steve Fairchild said had a poor week of practice.

Stage Race a hit in 1st year STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Even after spending the past three days overseeing the logistics of the inaugural Steamboat Springs Stage Race, director Corey Piscopo couldn’t help but smile a little when thinking about future events. Piscopo, who started brainstorming about the idea of a stage race in January, said initial signs from the weekend are the Stage Race could become a Steamboat staple. “I think a lot of people would be really disappointed if we didn’t do it again,” Piscopo said. “We’d like to make it an annual thing. It’s difficult to get the feedback from the town and the residents until after the race. But we’ve had very few issues with cars and traffic. That’s all positive.” Originally, Piscopo said they needed 75 racers to break even. After putting out feelers, Piscopo thought he could get 200 riders. Friday’s opening race started with 305 riders, and Piscopo said when they closed registration Monday, he had between 50 and 75 more riders try to sign up. Those are all good signs as the event looks to the future. “I think it’s definitely sustainable,” said local racer Barkley

want to keep it smaller. But all the residents, and everybody involved, has been great.” Alex Hagman, of Fort Collins, was first to cross the uphill finish line at 2:55:34 in the Men’s Pro 1-2 division. Jonathon Baker, of Boulder, was second with the same time, and Danny Summerhill, of Englewood, was third at 2:55:43. Steamboat’s Robinson finished 17th at 2:56:35, and Ian Pritchard was 39th finishing 23:20 behind Hagman. Boulder’s Marilyn McDonald was victorious again in 2:18:15. Julie Emmerman, of Boulder, was second with the same time, and Beth Fisk took third at 2:18:25. Steamboat’s Linnea Dixson finished 6th at 2:28:27, in the SW 4, SW 45-plus, SW 55-plus division. The Pro Men 1-2 GC continues unchanged with Benjamin Day in first position with an overall time of 4:56:35. In the Women’s 1-2, SW 3, SW 35-plus GC, Marilyn McDonald moved into first with a total time of 3:49:20.

Series continues Saturday at Emerald 51:02. Fellow Littleton resident Andrew Biglow won the men’s division in a time of 46:00. Krause and Biglow came up to Steamboat together for the weekend. Krause — whose husband is competing in the Steamboat Springs Stage Race

— said she treated the event as a training tool for the Aspen Golden Leaf Half Marathon. “It was just for a good workout,” she said. “I do some trail running, and I’m on the Salomon Trail Running Team. I thought this would be a good training run.” Jenna Gruben was second in

the women’s 10K, finishing in 52:14, while Anne Mudgett was third in 57:19. On the men’s side, Ryan O’Laughlin was second in 46:06, and Erik Ramstad was third in 48:12. The Running Series continues Saturday with the Emerald Mountain Trail Run.

Robinson, who competed in the first-year event. “I imagine there should be no problem making it bigger and better for next year. The feeling I got from all the racers is they’ve enjoyed it so far. So far, everything has been great.” “The stages that they have, these are world-class stages,” said Rob Noble, who rides with Fort Collins-based Ciclismo Racing, an elite amateur team. “The only thing that puts this a tier down than other stage races we do is it’s only three stages and a prologue. Most have five or six stages and a prologue. But for a first year, this is fantastic. I hope it succeeds and lasts into the future, because it could be a huge event.” Piscopo said there are several questions going into next year’s potential race. First, he has to decide if organizers want to make the event bigger. If the event does get bigger, Piscopo said, he would probably also have to change up the courses a little bit. He also has to talk with local businesses, among others, to see if Labor Day Weekend — generally the end of the road cycling season — is the best date to have it on. “If we wanted to, we could make it a bigger event — 500 or 600 riders,” he said. “We’re just going to have to see if that’s something we want. We might

Cleveland has two quarterbacks, neither of whom are any good.

AFC South Tennessee 11-5 Indianapolis 9-7 Jacksonville 8-8 Houston 4-12 Overview: Jeff Fisher is one of the best coaches in the league, and the Titans running game is too good not to win games. I think the Colts are due for a little fall off given their coaching overhaul. Jacksonville doesn’t excite me, and Houston is everyone’s surprise playoff team. Everyone’s but mine.

AFC West San Diego 13-3 Denver 8-8 Kansas City 7-9 Oakland 4-12 Overview: If the Chargers don’t do it this year, they never

will. Broncos fans need to give Josh McDaniels a chance, unless you were happy with annual 8-8 Mike Shanahan teams. Love what the Chiefs are putting together, and the Raiders continue to be a mess.

NFC East

San Francisco 9-7 Arizona 8-8 Seattle 8-8 St. Louis 5-11 Overview: San Francisco is my sleeper pick, if nothing else because I like what Mike Singletary is doing there. Arizona’s surprise run comes to an end when Kurt Warner gets hurt in the first couple of weeks. Seattle could surprise if Matt Hasselbeck comes back strong. St. Louis has too many holes.

NFC North Green Bay 13-3 Chicago 10-6 Minnesota 6-10 Detroit 3-13 Overview: I love Green Bay

and everything about them this year. Cutler will kill it in Chicago. And while I like Minnesota as a state, I hate Brett Favre. Detroit, congrats on your first wins since 2007. New Orleans 11-5 Carolina 9-7 Atlanta 9-7 Tampa Bay 6-10 Overview: Gregg Williams makes the Saints defense legitimate. Carolina and Atlanta will battle for Wild Card spots, and Tampa is just too young to make a serious run at the playoffs.

Philadelphia 12-4 New York 11-5 Dallas 8-8 Washington 6-10 Overview: Love the Eagles and what they’ve done for their offense. New York is still good, and Dallas is just holding on for a year until it can get Shanahan on the sidelines. Washington is the most overpriced team in the league.

back to defend his title from a year ago in the firehouse division. Murray said this year’s version was pretty much the same as last year’s, but it had a little more kick to it. “I’ve been hearing it’s the spiciest of a lot of them,” he said. “We’re getting repeat customers, which is always good.” Murray was awarded runner-up in the firehouse division, second to Mae Greene. Winners received a plaque and $100 cash.

Michelle McKee, president of the Routt County CattleWomen, said the group had been making and bringing its chili to the event since the first year and won the red chili division two years ago. She said the event allows them to promote beef while fundraising for their scholarship fund, which awarded $10,000 in college scholarships for the 200910 school year. McKee said many of their tasters “came back for thirds, fourths and fifths.” The judges also liked their chili. The CattleWomen took first place in the red chili division. This year, the Chili Challenge was moved up a week to coincide with Mainstreet’s Come Sale Away summer sidewalk sale and other Labor Day weekend events. And it was moved to the downtown location from Little Toots Park. Barnett said she thought those were the reasons the event attracted a larger crowd. She said they were “blown away” by the response. Steamboat resident Dan Bell attended the event for the first time, in part to support his friend Dusty Pfaff, who was awarded first place for his Asian Turkey Chili in the “other” chili division. But that wasn’t the only reason. “They’re all really good,” he said. “I love chili.” Steamboat residents Jessica Schlapicohl and Jon Cornella

also were first-timers. They said it sounded like a good time and even returned after leaving early because it was too crowded. “It’s great,” Cornella said. “This is the last summer event before the kickoff of the fall.” George Trujillo, of Yampa, was awarded first place in the green chili and people’s choice categories. A veteran of the Chili Challenge — having won in the green and firehouse chili categories in 2007 and people’s choice in 2006 — Trujillo said he really wanted to win because he was told by several people he couldn’t beat Charlie Noble, of Mahogany Ridge Brewery & Grill. Noble’s Wild Boar Green Chili won the people’s choice division the last two years. It was awarded runner-up in this year’s green chili division.
