By the time Johnny Spillane crossed the finish line of Wednesday’s 10-kilometer cross-country race, the hometown crowd filling the grandstands at Brent Romick Rodeo Arena had reached a fevered pitch. Ground crews and passenger service employees at Yampa Valley Regional Airport are refining their strategies during the holidays as they prepare for one of the biggest arrival days of the year Saturday. “We had a few growing pains (Dec. 19) — there always are some on the first big weekend of the season,” Airport Manager Dave Ruppel told the Routt County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday. “But we had good feedback on passenger service and the Red Coats — having somebody come up to (travelers) and ask-
ing if they need help.” The Red Coats are county employees funded by airline fees who are devoted to adding a personal touch for passengers arriving and departing at the airport west of Steamboat Springs. The Red Coats are augmented on busy days like this Saturday by ambassadors from the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association and Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. The airport saw 1,673 arriving passengers Saturday, Dec. 19, as inbound flights pulled up to the gate 98 percent full on average. This Saturday promises to be at least as busy at the county-owned airport with the additional flights to meet holi-
day demand. A busy day at the airport may not be enough to push tourism levels in Steamboat to last year’s levels. The Lodging Barometer published by the Chamber anticipates 12,000 visitors will spend the night here on Saturday compared to about 15,000 on the corresponding Saturday in 2008. Mountain condominiums are expected to be only 70 percent full, compared to 91 percent full last year at this time. See Airport, page 14

Some photos for season passes at Howelsen Hill may have a suspicious similarity this winter. “You wouldn’t believe how many season pass photos you see where people have that chocolate ring around their mouth,” Olivia Murray, of Mountain High Catering, said Tuesday. “Even the adults.” Blame it on the hot cookies. The city is contracting with Mountain High Catering for ticket sales and food concessions at Howelsen Hill, and Murray said they’ve kept the longtime favorite hot cookies on the menu while adding healthier options including ham, turkey and roast beef sandwiches; wraps; and fresh soups daily. Murray coowns the catering service with Christy Patterson. Mountain High Catering has served breakfast, lunch and snacks at the City Café at Centennial Hall on 10th Street since April and will

Do you have something to say about a story we’ve written?
The Copenhagen that matters Thomas Friedman The New York Times
COPENHAGEN
As I listened to Denmark’s minister of economic and business affairs describe how her country used higher energy taxes to stimulate innovation in green power and then recycled the tax revenues back to Danish industry and consumers to make it easier for them to make and buy the new clean technologies, it all sounded so, well, intelligent. It sounded as if the Danes looked at themselves after the 1973 Arab oil Friedman embargo, found that they were dependent on Middle East oil and put in place a long-term strategy to make Denmark energy-secure and start a new industry at the same time. The more I listened to the Danish minister, Lene Espersen, the more I thought of my own country, where I’ve been told
time and again by U.S. politicians that proposing even a 10-cent-a-gallon increase in gasoline taxes to make America more energy independent and to stimulate fuel efficiency is “off the table,” an act of sure political suicide. Not in Denmark. So I asked the Danish minister: “Tell me, what planet are you people from?” Espersen laughed. But I didn’t. How long are we Americans going to go on thinking that we can thrive in the 21st century when doing the optimal things — whether for energy, health care, education or the deficit — are “off the table.” They’ve been banished by an ad hoc coalition of lobbyists loaded with money, loud-mouth talk-show hosts who will flame anyone who crosses them, political consultants who warn that asking Americans to do anything important but hard makes one unelectable and a citizenry that doesn’t even ask for optimal anymore because it believes that optimal is impossible.
“Already the green taxes here are quite high,” said Espersen. “And even though we know this is not popular with business and industry, it has made all the difference for us. It forced our businesses to become more energy efficient and innovative, and this meant that, suddenly, we were inventing things nobody else was inventing because our businesses needed to be competitive.” The Environmental and Energy Study Institute, a nonpartisan research center, and the embassy of Denmark recently held a briefing on how Denmark is working to become a low-carbon economy. Here are some highlights: Although it still generates the majority of its electricity from coal, “since 1990, Denmark has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 14 percent. Over the same time frame, Danish energy consumption has stayed constant and Denmark’s gross domestic product has grown by more See Friedman, page 9
Obama has failed his words Jonah Goldberg

On his own terms, President Barack Obama is a failure. During the presidential campaign, he fought hammer and tongs with Hillary Clinton about the best way to govern. Clinton, casting herself as a battle-scarred political veteran, argued that diligence, dedicated detail work and working the system were essential for success. Obama, donning the mantle of a redeemer Goldberg descending from divine heights, argued that his soaring rhetoric was more than “just words”; it was a way out of the poisonous, partisan gridlock of yesteryear. Early on, in New Hampshire, he proclaimed that his “rival in this race is not other candidates. It’s cynicism.”
Mallard Fillmore
Occasionally the Obama-Clinton argument was explicit (such as when they sparred over who was more important to the Civil Rights Act — Martin Luther King Jr. or Lyndon Johnson), but it was always there, implicit in everything from their body language and stagecraft to position papers and platforms. The great irony of it all is that it seems they were both wrong. Obama’s rhetoric looks to be the best way to achieve a Clintonian agenda. But a Clintonian agenda is the worst possible way to live up to Obama’s rhetoric. From his 2004 DNC keynote speech onward, Obama rejected the partisan divide. He earned points by insisting that invidious descriptions of political opponents were deleterious to civic health and distracted us from the fact that “we are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”
In a speech after a June primary victory, Obama said he was “absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children … this was the moment — this was the time — when we came together to remake this great nation.” So, does anyone feel like Americans are coming together? Obama the outsider hasn’t changed the way Washington works; he’s worked Washington in a way that only an outsider with no respect for the place would dare. Consider his signature domestic priority: health care reform. After a year of working on it, his progressive base is either profoundly disappointed with him or seethingly angry. His Republican and conservative opponents are not only furious, they are emboldened. And independents — who’ve been deserting the Democrats in polls and off-year elections See Goldberg, page 9 Bruce Tinsley

We can’t ignore these problems anymore Friedman continued from 8 than 40 percent. Denmark is the most energy efficient country in the EU; due to carbon pricing, through energy taxes, carbon taxes, the ‘cap and trade’ system, strict building codes and energy labeling programs. Renewable resources currently supply almost 30 percent of Denmark’s electricity. Wind power is the largest source of renewable electricity, followed by biomass. ... Today, Copenhagen puts only 3 percent of its waste into landfills and incinerates 39 percent to generate electricity for thousands of households.” The Danish government funnels energy tax revenue “back to industry, earmarking much of it to subsidize environmental innovation,” wrote Monica Prasad, a faculty fellow at Northwestern University’s Institute for Policy
Research. Therefore, “Danish firms are pushed away from carbon and pulled into environmental innovation, and the country’s economy isn’t put at a competitive disadvantage.” It’s why Denmark, with only 5 million people, boasts some of the leading wind, biofuel and heating, cooling and efficiency companies in the world. Energy technologies are 11 percent of Denmark’s exports. Oil exports and energy taxes also subsidize mass transit and energy efficiency, keeping bills low for Danish consumers. Where do Danish politicians get the courage to do the right things — even if painful? “We don’t have a lot of resources,” said Ida Auken, a spokeswoman for the Danish green/socialist party S.F. “We have a welfare state that we have to keep up, so we have to think
forward all the time and not get stuck in the past. That is where we get the courage. And we have seen it work for 30 years. It is good business. Danish contractors are begging for strict standards on buildings because they know that if they can become efficient and meet them here, they can compete anywhere in the whole world.” My fellow Americans, the fact that the recent Copenhagen climate summit was a bust in terms of solving our energy/ climate problems doesn’t mean that we can ignore those problems — or that we can ignore how individual countries, such as Denmark, have effectively addressed them. With unemployment in Denmark at about 4 percent, compared with our 10 percent, maybe we should at least consider putting a few of its ideas on our table.

But Clintonian means cannot further Obamaian ends. For the past year, Obama’s party has made a mockery of everything Obama was supposed to represent. The tone has gotten worse as his communications staff spent the year demonizing Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Fox News. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called opponents of their health proposals “un-American.” Over the weekend, Rhode Island’s Sheldon Whitehouse insisted that Senate opposition is being driven in part by “Aryan support groups.” Everywhere you look, the sizzle doesn’t match the steak. He won the Nobel Peace Prize as he (rightly) sent even more men off to war. He promised that the oceans would stop rising but delivered a nonbinding some-
In his special health care address to Congress in September, he said, “I am not the first president to take up (the cause of health care reform), but I am determined to be the last.” Those were just words, and everyone, including Obama, knew it. Indeed, the only grounds for supporting the bill, according to progressives, is that it is a “first step” or a “starter house” that they’ll build on for years, even generations, to come. In other words, the health care debate is not only not going to end, it’s going to get uglier for as far as the eye can see. But here’s the point: Obama’s rhetorical audacity breeds cynicism, because utopianism always comes up short. Obama has many victories ahead of him, but his cause is already lost.

— are simply disgusted with the whole spectacle. Most important, an administration that once preened over its peoplepower roots can’t even claim that Americans like what he’s doing. The bill does have its supporters: inside-the-Beltway pundits and Capitol Hill deal-makers, the pharmaceutical industry and the supposedly rapacious insurance companies (don’t take my word for it, just ask Howard Dean — or your stockbroker). Under the Clintonian paradigm of governance, Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson’s parlaying of his pro-life objections to the Senate bill into a windfall for his state and Vermont Sen. He said she was getting enough support from the community. A search of the address indicated that the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home was on the market for $1.2 million. When reached Tuesday morning, listing agent Christine Pearson, of Steamboat Springsbased Christine Pearson Real Estate, declined to provide information about the home or the homeowner.

Murray said she has a “great relationship” with the city. She and Patterson rent the City Café from the city and keep proceeds from food sales. From there the turnaround was quick. Schiesser opened the doors to the gallery Sunday after three weeks of planning, licensing and designing, with business help from Walsh and design help from the Hodders, Schiesser said.

Dead lodgepole pines are typically evident by their red needles or lack of needles. One of the vehicles reportedly was traveling north, and the other south. The truck ended up across both lanes of traffic, and the SUV was off the west side of the road. Steamboat Springs Police Department Sgt. Gerard Geis said police still were trying to interview the people involved as well as witnesses to find out how the accident happened and which vehicle was traveling which direction. worked to extricate two passengers from the SUV, one from the front passenger seat and one from the rear passenger seat. Medical crews took both people to YVMC in critical condition. Geis said two other patients were taken to YVMC with minor injuries from the crash. All four victims were being treated locally as of 7 p.m. Wednesday, he said. The road was reopened by 6:30 p.m. Geis said no other injuries were reported in several other crashes in Steamboat Springs by 7 p.m. Geis said the crashes “involved too much speed and poor road conditions.” “The bottom line is, slow down,” he said. — To reach Zach Fridell, call 871-4208 or e-mail zfridell@steamboatpilot.com
Hazard continued from 12 of the Routt National Forest, said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations for Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. For the past 10 years, the ski area has worked to identify and remove hazard trees, Allen said. Three years ago, Ski Corp. realized it had lost the battle with the mountain pine beetle and teamed with the Forest Service to treat areas near lift lines, at the edges of ski trails and areas where people congregate. In addition, Allen said Ski Corp. works to identify defects in trees to treat or remove them before they die. He said there aren’t many lodgepole pines on the ski mountain and that most are near the base area. “Of the 3,000 permitted acres at the ski area, there are approximately 200 acres affected by the lodgepole epidemic,” Allen said. “Most of the mountain is aspen, subalpine fir and spruce” trees. The mountain pine beetle is an insect that feeds on pine trees, eventually killing them before moving on to another tree. The epidemic is killing mil-
lions of acres of trees across the Rocky Mountain West. It typically takes prolonged cold snaps to kill off the insects. — To reach Jack Weinstein, call 871-4203 or e-mail jweinstein@steamboatpilot.com

Tourism levels are expected to grow by Wednesday, when 13,700 people are expected to stay in area lodging properties. Kearney, Deneen win moguls Joel Reichenberger PILOT & TODAY STAFF
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
The day was cold, the course was snowy and the visibility was often limited. Still, hundreds lined the Voo Doo moguls run at Steamboat Ski Area on Wednesday and went wild as a pair of nearly perfect final runs paid off in men’s and women’s moguls at the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic Kearney Team Trials in Steamboat More Springs. photos Hannah View a photo Kearney and gallery with this Patrick Deneen story online each logged www.steam their diviboatpilot.com sion’s highest score on their first runs through the steep and deep bumps of Voo Doo. Each pulled into the gate before their second runs — the last of their respective competitions — needing to outscore strong runs from fan-favorites with Steamboat connections. And each came through, earning guaranteed spots in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. “I’ve been wanting to go to the Olympics my entire life,” Deneen said. “Now to actually be qualified and guaranteed of going, I’m just really excited.” Kearney laid down a fast and high-flying run down the course. It wasn’t spectacular, but that was the plan, she said. It was enough. She scored 26.30, just enough to edge out The Lowell Whiteman School graduate Emiko Torito, who took the lead with the secondto-last run. “I feel wonderful,” Kearney said. “I’m pleased with my skiing, and I’m especially pleased with the result.” Kearney’s trip to Vancouver will be her second to an Olympic Games, though she said she hopes this bears little in common with her trip to Turin, Italy, in 2006. There, she lost her balance after her first jump and with it any chance at a medal. She was already off to a fast start this winter, with a World Cup win and a third-place finish likely enough to ensure she’d have made the trip to Canada no matter what Wednesday’s outcome was. Still, relief was in her voice

as she contemplated the opportunity to avenge her 2006 stumble. “This is the only golden ticket they give out in our sport, and now I can relax a little,” the Vermont skier said. “I’m looking for redemption. I didn’t ski well, and I didn’t take advantage of the whole Olympic experience, but I’ve learned a lot since then.”
Deneen edges out Cota Deneen, meanwhile, realized his life-long ambition of earning a trip to his first Olympic
Games. At the same time, he crushed the hopes of Steamboat hopeful Jeremy Cota. Cota, who just earned his spot Cota on the U.S. Ski Team last spring, logged the fifth-best score after the first run but soared down the course and took the lead with four skiers remaining on the final run. Two of those remaining skiers fell while landing a jump See Moguls, page 18

Emiko Torito could only watch as Hannah Kearney narrowly nudged her from the top of the podium and out of the lone automatic berth to the Olympics that was up for grabs Wednesday. She took a moment to compose herself before addressing members of the media. The Lowell Torito Whiteman School graduate and freestyle moguls skier had put down the fastest second run of the day and looked as if she might have stamped her ticket to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. But for as much as it must have hurt, Torito — whose family still lives in Denver while she resides in Park City, Utah — brightened up when asked about the Voo Doo ski run and what it was like to come back to Steamboat to compete. “This is where I feel like I blossomed as a skier,” said Torito, who still has a good shot at making the Olympic team. “Coming back to this mogul course where I spent so many countless hours as a teenager, hiking the mogul jumps and training, it’s like coming back to my roots. This is really nice. Steamboat’s incredible.” Torito was among a group of moguls skiers at Wednesday’s 2010 U.S. Winter Olympics Team Trials that used to — or still — call Steamboat home. For all of them, coming back to Steamboat — and particularly the Voo Doo course — was something special. Especially with the 1,000 or so spectators in attendance. “It feels so great,” said Eliza Outtrim, who attended The Lowell Whiteman School her senior year and still calls Steamboat home in the summers. “To come back and get to ski on this course is a great opportunity. It’s always really, really fun.” Although none of Steam boat’s brethren won Wednesday, the results didn’t damper the many homecomings. See Hometown, page 18

or flew off the course. When Deneen stepped in for his final run, Cota was waiting at the bottom, potentially less than 30 seconds from an unlikely spot on the Olympics team. “It’s a lot of stress,” he said about having to wait with so much on the line. “You’re sitting down there, and obviously you’re hoping you can stay at the top. At the same time, I just kept thinking about how I had skied well, no matter what happens.” Deneen was too good. He hit a back lay on the top jump and a cork 720 on the bottom, all without a glitch. “I was definitely really nervous because it was a do-or-die situation,” Deneen said. “I just

“It’s been good. I wish I could have done a little better and laid down a better run,” said Mike Morse, who lives in Steamboat. “I was having a little trouble in the middle section. I’ll keep moving from here and hopefully things will get better.” Morse already has two top10 finishes on the World Cup circuit this season and looks like he’ll be up for consideration for one of the Olympic spots. Outtrim, who is finishing up an economics degree at Colorado College, said she has an outside chance to
make the team. For Torito, however, Wedne sday’s second-place finish seemed to provide some motivation. “That’s my goal this year is to go as big as I can and be faster and bigger than every girl on the mountain,” she said. “I feel like I accomplished that and skied a good run with a lot of pressure. … This is the right direction to go to the Olympics. I think I can keep improving to make that goal of the Olympic podium. I’m headed there.” — To reach Luke Graham, call 871-4229 or e-mail lgraham@steamboatpilot.com

Spillane holds off Lodwick at finish Through ups and downs, Spillane stays strong Luke Graham

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
As Steamboat’s Johnny Spillane stood around explaining to a throng of reporters about injury after injury and surgery after surgery, there was a subtle yet confident tone in his voice. Spillane, who won the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic Team Trials Nordic combined event Wednesday after outracing fellow U.S. Ski Team member Todd Lodwick, seems to be in a good place entering the heart of the competition season. His early results prove that point. Spillane has two top-seven finishes on the World Cup circuit this year to go along with his win Wednesday. And to think his equipment didn’t even show up from Austria until 7 a.m. Wednesday. But for Spillane, the difference in this year and years past may have come this summer — when his body finally started to get healthy. The 2003 World Champion has had seven surgeries since 2003. There are the five surgeries on his shoulders, two on his knees and multiple herniated discs in his back. Five of those surgeries were season-ending. The latest came when he hurt his knee in July at the Ski Jumping Extravaganza in Steamboat. He had surgery in August and then again in October. Considering his dog Hayduke died on the day he had the knee surgery in October, it’s fair to say it was a rough summer for Spillane. But because he couldn’t put any weight on his knee and could only rehab, the time allowed the rest of his body to heal. So he spent much of his summer hunting and fishing. “I think he’s just well-rested,” Spillane’s wife, Hilary, said after Wednesday’s competition. “I think it was good for him to take a little break. Mentally, he’s doing a lot better. He’s in a good spot. It was a hard summer with the two surgeries. But he went in with no expectations. Just mentally, he’s in a better spot.” He’s also providing evidence that the United States could very well be the Nordic combined favorites come the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Fletcher at the finish. “We knew it was going to be like a mass start with all of us going out together,” Demong said. “Johnny and I switched leads a few times, and Todd was sitting behind waiting for the end. Johnny, amazingly, was able to save enough energy despite leading those last couple of laps to pull away on the last hill, and neither Todd nor I could catch him. It was pretty cool. Johnny has been skiing really strong on the World Cup, and for him to be able to do it at home is awesome.” The Nordic combined race was the first of two Olympic team qualifiers to take place Wednesday in Steamboat. The top American men’s and women’s moguls skiers battled for Olympic berths at the Steamboat Ski Area later in the day. Freestyle aerials skiers hit

the Nordic combined Team Trials event at Howelsen Hill. Wednesday’s win, combined with several top finishes on the World Cup tour this season, indicate that the Steamboat Springs native will be a medal threat come the February games in Vancouver, British Columbia. Spillane overcame a 9-second deficit after the jumping portion of Wednesday’s trial en route to claiming victory in front of one of the largest hometown crowds since Steamboat Springs hosted its last World Cup in 2002. Nordic combined is an Olympic event based on two Nordic disciplines — ski jumping and cross-country skiing. The jumping portion comes first, and each athlete’s jump score is used to seed the crosscountry race. The jump winner is always the first skier out in the cross-country race. As expected, Wednesday’s competition was fierce between longtime U.S. Nordic Combined Team veterans Spillane, Lod wick and Demong. All three are former world champions and Olympic veterans. Demong jumped 120.5 meters to win the jumping portion of the competition with a score of 123.8 points. Lodwick recorded the longest jump at 123 meters, but he lost style points after he struggled with his landing. He finished in second place and started the crosscountry race 1 second behind Demong. Spillane was third after the jump. “I just wanted to get up to those guys pretty quickly,” Spillane said about the 10-km cross-country portion. “I got up to them quick and rested for about a lap and then went to the front and pushed the pace a bit. In the fourth lap, I really wanted to push it because I knew those guys had been skiing behind me for a ways, and I wanted to make sure that when we got to that last hill they were as tired as I was.” Lodwick’s plan was to ski behind the leaders for most of the race and look for his opportunity to take the lead near the end. “I wanted to be the caboose, not the engine,” Lodwick said. “On the final lap, I was in third place and was waiting for Billy (Demong) to go. It didn’t happen, so by the time I made my move, it was too late.” Spillane held off Lodwick at the finish and completed the course in a time of 25 minutes, 6 seconds. Lodwick finished three seconds back, and Demong was third, crossing the finish line 12 seconds behind Spillane. Brett Camerota finished fourth after beating out Steamboat’s Bryan

Steamboat Springs’ Johnny Spillane steps onto the podium at the Howelsen Hill rodeo grounds after winning the 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic Team Trials Nordic combined race Wednesday. There, the Americans could have three skiers — Spillane, Lodwick and Bill Demong — each capable of medaling. Lodwick and Demong are 2009 Nordic combined world champions. With a healthy Spillane, anything’s possible. “I don’t think anybody knew — not even him,” Demong said about Spillane’s status entering the 200910 season. “But he stayed relaxed and did the things he knew he could do without pushing his limits. He’s amazed us. … He’s the top guy right now. He adds a third guy we can rely on being on the podium.” And while the talk was all about Demong and Lodwick at last season’s World Championships, Wednesday proved to be Spillane’s day. “It’s just been a constant battle to be healthy,” Spillane said. “It’s taken away from what I think I could have accomplished in those years. At the same time, I still had good results, and I still enjoy doing the sport. Now to feel like it’s all coming together a little bit as we head into the Olympics is nice.”
